Changing the airport. Heres a sign its snowing. Many of our major School Districts are closed. That includes Denver Public schools, aurora, adams county, boulder county, jeff everyson county, littleton schools, Douglas County. That is just to name a few. All the closings and delays are scrolling along the bottom. 6 01 lets send it out to jason. Jason, how is it looking . Reporter the snow is still falling and its still blowing. The wind just picked up in the last few minutes or so. Im standing in a newly plowed parking lot. The problem is its icy underneath all of this stuff. The ice we told you about yesterday is sticking behind after they plow the snow. Speaking of the snow this is what people have to deal withh a good healthy 456 inches. Roads making for kind of a tough drive viability wise. Speeds are not that bad as people make their way out. The wind is definitely blowing and the wind goes up and down here on i25. We are not far from du. They are closed today. We are in the parking lot of a movie theater. That will be busy today with all the regular school closings. It is a cold one out here especially with that windchill. Take it slow on the roads as youve got to deal with all of this snow that continues to fall and continues to blow here down south. We will send it back to you guys in the studio. Thank you, jason. Still pretty good snow on the Eastern Plains. Less so in the metro area but the damage is done because of all the snow and the ice that was underneath it prior to that and now the blowing conditions. Its lightening up quite a bit. Heavy snow still falling near the burlington area. Look at the camera shaking. A good 810 inches of snow on the ground. 21 at city park. Below zero at bertha pass. Today were in the low to mid 20ssright now. The storm itself is moving well off to the east of us now. Located near kansas city and it will move away. So conditions will be gradually improving. So for right now, not very good at all. And outside our studios its a chiller at the present time. To a giant dayle. Did i explode on camera . Growing, growing, and growing. It is cold out here. Big factor, that blowing snow, and it is making the roads incredibly icy. Slide into the intersection. Not giving themselves enough time. You can see the snow out here. Weve got definitely about 46 inches in the metro area. And yeah its the blowing snow that will be the factor on the roadways as it whips that snow across. You can still see it coming down. Jayson thht means anybody who does need to get out will be running into dicey roads. The good news we have so many people staying home today. We should see a lot less traffic on the roadways this morning. However, we have accidents like this one. I still see some of the track marks right here where that driver spun out and tapped the wall and then stopped here. Its been here foe la lf an hour ste paol ion the ene. Leme me e othed. T. Cames. U casee e otr nditns o the. D yocan e the ow paed ros and la recoitio very tough. Some of the blowing and drifting snow. And we do have other accidents Road Conditions as we look straight down basically. Take a look at i25 and arapaho. Some of the latest accidents. Another one is coming in just on that northbound side of santa fe before we get to evans. I just watched the plow drivers go on 470 so they are working the highways and Holding Traffic behind them as they work their way down east and westbound. Take a look at the big map. We have not only double the commute times but most of the Eastern Plains highways are closed. I70, i76 are the big ones. Out in arvada Cory Reppenhagen is out there. Thank goodness you have the beard to keep you warm. [ laughter ] reporter yeah. If you stand out here long enough, it really collects here. Only on this sidd. You can see this stiff wind blowing pretty much right out straight across my face. Like you were saying. There is quite a bit of flakes flying around here as well. But they are the tiny little crystals. Noo really amounting to muchh more accumulation but the wind is easily transporting this and building up in areas especially along the roadways. Behind me here, this is not an eight foot snow drift. They just plowed this parking lot. And it just shows you, this was a powerful storm and mitch, im goinggto give you some perspective here. For yesterday. Its actually the sixth highest single day snnwfall that weve had at dia in five years. Wow. That significant. No wonder were having slow downs out there. Thank you, cory. With this snow. Weve had 120 Flights Canceled last hourr that is up to 125. So call your airline. This is the misery map. Shows us where delays and cancellations are. Newark on to of the list, and now its us. You can see the big storm ver colorado and off o the east coast. 125 Flights Canceled. If you have a flight today, call before you go out. Denver 7 reporter Lindsay Watts is live on the tarmac. Is this a around the clock kind clear . Reporter absolutely, mitch. We are out on the tarmac getting an up close look at how dia removes snow. There are air craft that will be taking off be. Yesterday there were more than 500 and dia doesnt think it will rise to that level today. I want to show you over this ttis is really interesting. These are large snow melters over here. Some of them can melt 600 tons of snow in one hour. Im here with ron charles with dia. Can you explain how these mellers work . Sure. During the whole process, once the snow starts and we get over an inch of snow on the tarmac, we have over 30 box plows that push the snow into piles right next to the melter. And then the loaders drop the snow into the melter and it melts and simply the water comes out and goes down the drains. That as you said its a 600ton per hour melter. Equivalent of about 4060 dump trucks that wed have to hall if we had the melters. Very good. Thanks so much. I think the biggest story at dia it is so cold. I was out covering weather yesterday and that was a day at the beach compared to what we are seeing today. As the snow continues to fall, this is a perfect time to download the snow cast app. You can have live radar in the palm of your hands. These are the little wind vectors. Gradually becoming more norrh westerly and that is a down sloping wind so it will cut off theeheavier precipitation for us. At least here in the denver area. Still get some pretty good banding down here. I here elevations at Douglas County and albert county and far Eastern Plains. Exit the region. Head into the midwest over to omaha, nebraska. We will get quieter weather for the next severrl days but it will take a little while to get things cleared up hence all the closures somewhere for today. This is what we will see by 7 00 tonight. Mountain snow showers will linger. The plains. Temperatures will stay cold all day long, all across colorado with temperatures likely only 12 degrees for a highed a leadville, 24 in denver. But there are the windchills feeling like it will be five or ten degrees above ero. Speaking of cold outside, lets go out to dayle cedars right now. It is incredibly cold out here. You are exactly right. Temperatures in the 20s. With that windchill, it feels a lot colder. It is light right now. It from doesnt look too bad. Watching cars moving through the intersection at spear and lincoln. And you can see it doesnt look horrible but thankfully that is because there is not a lot of people on the roadways. Of course that is because of a lot of schools are closed. Give yourself extra time if you are out here. I want to show you hat seven day. While the snow is going to move out, mike was howing you that a short time ago. By midday today, those `emperatures they are going to stay cold. Not only today but also tomorrow. That will be the biggest factor `specially for those kiis over the next couple of days as they get ready to head out and stay at the bus stop. Good news we are not dealing one of the latest activities coming in. Ive seen a lot of spin out crashes coming from the westbound side of i70. This loop ramp that goes southbound c470. As they move the camera around, we cant see it. It looks like somebody might have slid down the embankment there. I wouldnt be surprised if that has happened. Weve seen a lot of those spin out accidents. Take a look at the cd. O. T. Camera. You can see the eassbouud side, the westbound side, all the blowing and drifting snow we are dealing with. I will move the camera so you including not only there but parker road on 225. It was so tough on parker road especially. The drive to castle rock is pretty much abysmal as the blowing and drifting snow is making things tougher. Lighter traffic coming up tech center. Its been very thick. At least the snow. Maybe double the commute time in most locations. A lot of side street locations. More south, east, and west. I70 closed down to tte eaat. I76 is closed down. Highways, u. S. How are drivers handling the roads . Reporter in case you are wondering, yes, it is still snowing out here. I want to show you i25 near hamden. Drivers are moving along at a decent speed given the amount of snow on the roads. You can see they havv carved out their own lanes as they make their way along. Visibility still goes up and down as we are starting to see more and more drivers. We did see a couple plow trucks come by a couple minutes ago. You can see in the distance rtd. There are no trains at the station right now. We have seen trains go back and forth. We are dealing with 56 inches of now depending on where you are standing at i25 and hamden. I hear they have 13 inches of snow in tiny town. To mike nelson with more snow totals. Thanks, jason. We will probably pick up an inch or two in many areas. The precipitation is ending to the north of us. Still coming down pretty good out on the far Eastern Plains. You get to Washington County and yuma county. Take you live to akron and this is our i have era wireless camera. The snow is still really falling and blowing sideways out there. Roads are snow covered and slippery. Temperatures very cold currently. 21degrees in denver. 6 below at bertha pass. Temperatures in the teens and 20s. They will not go much warmer than that today as winds continue out of the north, north west. So its a dangerous situation if you have any car trouble. Of course a lot of places you cant get there any way because the roads are closed. They are open in downtown denver. We know that for sure because that is where dayle cedars is right few. Its fabulous on the radar. Step outside and see it in person. It looks amazingly gorgeous. We have wind speeds 1520 Miles Per Hour coming out of the north and bringing in that very, very cold air. Lets look at your hourly planner. Let me show you what you will deal with throughout the day today. We are in the low 20s this morning. that is where we will stay. Some of us in the metro area will warm into the mid 20s. All. And then whether drop down into yeah it looks gorgeous out here. So enjoy it from inside your house, sitting on the couch, grab that hot chocolate, warm cup of coffee, throw the kids out in the snow. And im asking everybody send us your photographs of the snow. You can tweet us or puttit on facebook. Im daylecedars. I let to get the hot chocolate stuff and put it in this is out to the west side of town. This is our road wrangler. Darrell orr driving on a snowy sixth avenue. Its been pretty tough for you especially on the side streets this morning. Reporter that is right. The side streets have a lot more snow than sixth avenue, i 25, and i70. The heavier traffic on i70 and 6 there starting to mix it up with that fluoride underneath and getting a little slushy. But a different story on the side street. Anywhere from 45 inches within the metro area. Outside ttere is a lot more snow. Give yourself some distance between other cars and extra time this morning. Guys. One of the latest accidents that have been repprted around i25 and alameda, i cant see it just yet but you can see the slow traffic downtown. It has been very tough. Take a look at over all big picture map where you see double commute times. We have the Eastern Plains closed down i70, i76. 287 north of fort collins is 3 closed down. And it wont open until they can get the snow to abate out there and get the roads cleared and blizzard like conditions to ease up to the Eastern Plains. Were also having problems out at dia this morning. We have our own Lindsay Watts out there checking on the conditions. Lindsay, doesnt look very warm where you are. Where are your gloves . Jason, its so cold. I have my finger less gloves. Maybe i need to put on the other pair. Its freezing out here. And conditions have canceled. So far 125 flights for the day. This is one of the biggest if not the biggest storm that dia has seen so far this winter. As of midnight 7 inches have fallen here. With the snow still coming down, airpprt staff thinks we could be up to ten everybodiis. You can see planes over there. And even more interesting we are getting a look at the large snow melters that dia uses. Snow scooped up into the melters. There is burners at the bottom. And its instantly melted down and then goes into this storm drain system. So 125 Flights Canceled at dia. We will check in with meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen who is live in arvada. Reporter the snow and the wind continues through here as well with the storm that has been very impressive. Its been impressive with snow. Its been impressive with wind and duration as we move into our fourth day now of snow accumulation in the denver metro area. People will remember this storm and different things. The ground hog storm, the broncos storm. I will remember it as the storm that we debuted our new first alert weather chaser. And this truck has been great in its first storm. And its going to be instrumental in covering storms for us. As we go through the years to come. One more thing. We average 7. 5 inches of snow in february and were already there in the second day. That is impressive. We have to talk broncos. Super bowl five days away. Eric lupher and lisa hidalgo are live for us in the bay area with all the big events that are leading up to the day. How sit going this how is it going this morning . Day. Im hans. And im frans. And we will buff you up. Im in my heaven. `this is the scuttles locker room. How fun is this . Clearly a great photo opportunity. Last night you got to meet your biggest heros. I chased him down. I chased hhm down with my cell phone. Didnt tackle him. Almost did. But got an interview. His keys to broncos winning a super bowl. If Peyton Manning can come out of this game with a same stat llne, i think that will bode well for the broncos. The running game. I think they have to ratchett that up a little bit more. It has to be one of those things that ball control has to be the thing. `and if you can limit that offense, take the big plays away from cam newton, i think reporter so i had my control fen recording and microphone. He probably didnt know what i was doing. But i thought it looked pretty good. And he had good keys to the game. Reporter heisted said the same thing two year he said the same thing two years ago. Here we are in the skittles locker room. Eyes not your hands. If you are going to pay the 35 to get in, get your 35 worth of skittles right here. So much fun. We have more commng up live. We will be here all morning. After our show this morning, whether be Live Streaming at thedenverchannel. Com. It looks like they are standing in the skittles tub. That is the idea i guess. [ laughter ] 20 minutes until 7 00. And we have a live look outside right now. Areas to the west and south of denver seeing lots of snowfall out east as the heavy winds cause a lot of problems out there. Cd. O. T. Had to shut down the road out there at i70 east. Lets check in noo with first alert meteorologist mike nelson. We will do that right after the heres the way things are looking in akron. They are still in the teeth of the storm and the winds are blowing. You can see the streetlights moving around a little bit to the streets are very covered in snow out there on the enplanes. Radarrshows akron in the middle of the storm. Its lightening up to the denver area. We still have snowfalling in the area and the winds as indicated by our little windy thing. What do you want to call those things . Little tadpoles . That is probably better. That is indicating the strong winds. We do have the Winds Continuing as the storm begins to lift off to the east of us. Its out near omaha, nebraska. Things will start to improve but roads are in rough shape right now and they will stay lets go to the guru of the highways jayson luber. Mary stone up in wellington. We will start with that and go back in a second. I want to start with the i70, 270 camera. Another one on pena boulevard outbound. Now lets take a look at marys picture that you sent out on twitter. Look at all of this snow that fell up in wellington. Ha is a lot of snow and that is a lot of snow and all that snow is on the roadways. We do have a bunch of problems, a bunch of new ones popping up including some of these stalled vehicles, really spin out vehicles. Some that cant keep going. We have another one monaco and la salle. Another one coming parker and orchard. Taking a live look at the roadways this morning. The snow is coming down. Roadways pretty troublesome this morning. Tough to see the lanes out there. Another look at i25 and hamden. Veey tough to see the lanes out there but people are getting by. Lets go to mike nelson. Our weather has gone from the big red l. It will mess up travel all throughout the central part of the country and down from the south to st. Louis to new orleans they will run into severe thunderstorms. Likely get heavy thunderstorm activity. For us by 4 00 this afternoon the main bands of snow are done. They are off to the north and east. Up into eastern nebraska, up across much of iowa, minnesota, northern wisconsin and our weather will be snow showers. Maybe another inch or two at the most and gusty winds along with cold temperatures. As far s by tonight, you get to about 7 30 just partly the mountains will still continue to get some snow. And that will actually happen the next couple of days. The winds aloft will continue to bring moisture into the high country of colorado. So great skiing conditions for sure. But definitely want to bundle up because temperatures today will not be very warm at all. 12 for a high at leadville. 30 at grand junction. 32 in utah. And Eastern Plains we will still have the strong winds as well. Along with the cold temperatures that will continue throughout the day and then tonight down to about 05 above zero across the Eastern Plains. A little bit below zero in the mountains. Two below zero in al al moe is a. More chill coming up because this cold weather pattern will hang in there for awhile. Unfortunately dayle drew the short straw on that one and she temperatures right now. I do have the jacket on, the hat is here now and you are going to need all the layers as you head out the door. Its definitely chilly. Not only are the temperatures in the 20s but the wind, its the windchill you will notice as you head out the door. No exposed skin. You will ot want anything out there. Its pretty though. As long as you are inside and looking at it. Cars getting by pretty nicely. This is right here at spear and lincoln. However, we are definitely seeing some snow packed and icy conditions. So give yourself a lot of extra stopping. Mike talked about the cold temperatures we are dealing with today in the 20s. Take a look at our sevenday forecast. I wish i could tell you we will quickly warm up. That is not the case. 3 tomorrow. Finally reaching the 30s on thursday and then we can also say hello to the 40s. I can tell you those 40s will never feel so good when we get out of theee temperatures. Especially single digit lows. Predicted an early spring. We do have very tough driving conditions out there to the plains. You can see that here at the straitton camera. The streaming stratton amera and it will not be a fun drive. Take look the at eastern these are the highways that are closed. Much of the highways whether they are Colorado State highways, interstate highways the Eastern Plains are all closed down. What does it look like at castle pines . That is what it looks like at castle pines. Well be back with more the brady bunch is back. Most large School Districts are closed today. We have been scrolling along the bottom of the screen. We will start with our morning sprint so you can get all you need to know with jason. Reporter a light fine snow that gets in the eyes and blowing around here at i25 and hamden. Visibility noo too bad here. There is a good amount of traffic moving along on i25. You see the lanes . They are carved in where your tires are. The light rail off in the distance is moving. They had the plow out 56 where we are standing. Ironically its a chilis and its quite chilly out here. Reporting live at i25 and hamden. Reporter we are live at dia this morning where 125 flights have been canceled so far today. We are watching some planes getting ready for take off. And also getting a look at how dia handles big storms like this one. These are the snow melters over here. Dia has gotten between 710 inches of snow so far. So this is one of the biggest if not the biggest storms the airport has seen so far this 3 season. Here is jason with traffic. Very tough driving out to pena boulevard. There is an accident outbound pena boulevard. Here is darrell orr our snow wrangler here this morning. Alameda heading up to broadway. Jason. Streets. They are not too bad. The city has done a real good job of plowing these. There is sand on the ground. I dont think we will have a big problem this afternoon. But later tonight when the sun goes down, i think this will all refreeze again and we may have issues. We will definitely have issues tomorrow morning on the commute with a lot more traffic than this morning. So right now traffic is fairly districts and government offices are closed down. But it will be a tough one i think especially tomorrow morning. Here are some of the totals we have picked up over the last 24 hours. The radar still shows plenty of snow around here. The good news is its much lighter to the north around blair her county, weld county, out to the east diminishing but slowly. This is the view currently out at akron. You ccn see the trucks moving. Its really snowing and blowing out there. Eastern colorado very snow bound for today. Very good. Thank you, mike. 6 55 now. And there is a chance for some rain today San Francisco bay area. But the forecast is also sunshine for the game on sunday. And of course a victory for the broncos. That is right. Eric lupher and lisa hidalgo taking in all the sights. You guys are having so much fun. We are enjoying watching you. Reporter but now its a challenge. Because we have gone through all of the challenges here at nfl experieece. And now coming later this week we will go head to head. to do that cheesy voice guys. Good . Reporter yes. Reporter we will take each other on. Its the toboggan. Com coming up after the show. We will take you to more fun sights and sounds. Reporter but i have to prepare for our competition. Game face. Go prepare. Go prepare. [ laughter ] hes off. Look at that walk. That is what he does on game day. He gets so nervous. There they go. Tomorrow. Fun. The competition is fierce. Quick final look at traffic. Cameras. Can. I will show you the conditions here at central park and 36. Right near i70. There is an accident up in northfield. Up along quebec. Take a look at the the improving conditions here. So some of the highways are Getting Better but there is still a lot of snowfalling down to the south and east and its Eastern Plains. That is why so many of the highways remain closed down.
