News. This is Leigh have be been this is our American story and for the hour we're going to tell a heck of a story about one of the greatest golfers of all time we're going to celebrate and honor his death. On Palmer died on this day in history in 2016 all of our those days in history by the way are brought to us by the great folks at Hillsdale College where you can go to learn all the things that matter in life all the things that are beautiful in life but Hillsdale e.b.u. To get all of their free interest for courses and boy was on a power beautiful and did he matter he wasn't precious and he wasn't privileged one reporter called him Marlon Brando with a golf club he created Arnie's army and you'll hear from every walk of life golfers to one who is a part of that army and it was America and so we're going to throw to an hour we did back around the time of his death let's go back to 2016. Was he the best ever who cares but others argue about that he was a great ones was he the most important you're going to find out that it was because it ended up he democratized a sport that had been only for the elites but he didn't just democratize it commercialised he was the 1st to win $1000000.00 on the professional tour he was the 1st to fly his own plane to a tournament $68.00 p.g.a. Win 7 majors or Masters 4 that's crazy Orne in Latrobe Pennsylvania to a working class family in a steel town but let's take a listen 1st before we dig into this biography to some of the folks who remembered Arnold Palmer Let's go to Le Trobe Pennsylvania 1st his home were in airports named after him because again he flew is own plane and he loved aviation. Here's a report from the small town t.v. Station you can see that a growing memorial is starting to take form here outside the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport and even the flags are at half staff today people I talked to in this community tell me that this loss is truly heartbreaking Stu Hartman stop by the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport with flowers in hand paying respect to an icon he touched a lot of people in so many ways and a true gentleman at the opportunity to meet him once and he just the most down to earth guy. We're going to miss him terribly Arnold Palmer's legacy just wasn't on the golf course but also look trope and surrounding community the airports named in his honor where he served on the Westmoreland County Airport Authority great loss all over but especially around here he was he's a great guy and he you know he did a lot for very many players in the airport Palmer was also the president and principal owner of the look Country Club just down the road in Youngstown signs of gratitude and thanks and fly with angels Arnie a man who's kind hardness of spirit and generosity is just as big as his talents on the links and sat with kings and queens and presidents and and he was just as happy sitting with a bunch of guys from the mill or the further coal mines in the u.s. And pretentious he was a user you know everybody calls a good egg we were just so blessed to have had a. Amongst us and we're going to support he sat with kings and he did you learn that general n presents Dwight d. Eisenhower actually showed up at his doorstep to hang with him for a weekend and play some golf but yet he was just as comfortable with just ordinary working class folks because he saw himself as ordinary There's just no doubt part of the big 3 in the 1960 s. Of golf. Gary Player Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus but there was no rivalry in school it's quite like Nicklaus and Palmer Let's take a listen to Jack Nicklaus remembering his friend would be playing together and one of us Richard 73 no one should $74.00 we walk off and says well I got you today while the rest of the field just passed us we didn't really care whether the recipe will pass and we want to beat each other and we've been that way all our lives but yet that we finished the round we shake hands go have dinner together well I think it's the legacy of the game of golf as he got popularized the game is a good move forward he handled his life the right way he was he was he was a strictly a stickler for. Dress codes and and you know clean faces and. Short hair and you know he was pretty much the old school he loved the traditions of the game you love the traditions of how you're supposed to handle yourself and and how you're supposed to represent yourself in the game I think the best Memories are memories of. The 2 of us and just being friends having each other's back and doing supporting each other in a variety of different ways I spoke to him about to explode his birthday I guess based on his column on his birthday and. That was supreme pretend for the he. He sounded great and I said How you doing so I'm doing good as I'm going back he said start his golf balls again and and I don't know whether he was or not but that's what he said you know we talked a little bit I thought he was doing great I was really he was a lot better than he was I guess the sure just the sure he didn't play get in there you were worried about him and then. And then he and he starts sounding better we hate to lose a friend and I hate to lose any kind of living friends but I sort of look back and remember the good times we had and we're both getting pretty old and you know I think that we had a lot of good times and a lot of good things we did together. A lot of a lot of great. Competitions and a lot of great times together lives and you know that's not things you remember and that is the thing you remember years Freddy Couples who called in to a sports station and Freddie's a remarkable golf talent and he actually gets overwhelmed by the prospect of thinking about talking about his close friends passing and you remember your 1st encounter with Arnold. You know and I just want to find you know what it is you that you are oh oh. Oh. Oh oh oh God the. Whole. Freddie with us. Oh. That's a tough loss Freddie I can't do anything for the couple says so very powerful. When we come back you can hear from so many more people on the life of Arnold Palmer and you can only hope when you pass that people are crying like that about you folks take a listen to the secret you're going to hear from on all Palmer from beyond from all his friends this is Lena v This is our American story. This is our American stories and we're continuing with our celebration of the life of Arnold Palmer and what a life it was. You just heard a grown man openly and just outwardly crying on air could not get it together and this is how he impacted by the way his peers here are these people he's competing with every day day in day out and he forged deep relationships with the people who once they want to course he wanted to win but the 2nd he got off he wanted to help their friends his friends and they were all friends these guys and you can hear it. Here's Lee Trevino my goodness we could do an hour on him his life is so compelling Here's leecher of you know what it was like playing with Arnold Palmer on to the coast and I would always say I love her no I would play bad I like it should be Ok to call. There are there are. Negatives and I love it and we're going to want to you know. Ok Ok I'm angry laugh at it around a play and you see or don't want or need to go to your with read the book. What the hell are you doing. With one of my peers. Holding a little elbow and they fell apart and I had one up there of a piece already. On you know. In the back of my water and I quote a bad girl. And I guess. I've got a plan. And I had one and it's been here that. Tree. Over there and that's when he quit that he quit right here right there and. I'm not blaming anyone actually mean. That's it that's one less competitive job and or do you have to be apart or you know I haven't taken my advice. On all that. Because I'm a financial plan. But I don't want to go back or got all those. 500 American people. Or self-deprecating I mean here's the greatest perhaps golfer of all time. And he's just cutting it up even if he's losing his sight and is just used and die in depth coordination and knowing that it's time to stop he's still making it fun I don't know how you do that but again this is what made Arnold Palmer Arnold Palmer Lee Trevino continues with another story I think it's Ok if I want to read it and I'm warning that this is bigger than a moral issue this is a national wielder I'll give you. One that is involved and I want to have you know let the. Show he says if only he and the ladies take images of the media to make a mockery out where you know that he's going to enough people want to call was even going to Saturday morning that was made it. Was the key to the water and everything when you don't say well over a good night. It's all he gets all the sympathy and just for some reason for some reason this is a group I don't know. If it's. Always what it. Was But anyway even if you look at it out there I think that. Most people all in the war are going to give someone a little bit more space kind of all over all you know you know. If you're going to get so Ok I can. Really think a shoes Ok but he talks. And you know talked about how Palmer never threw anything away they were doing. That all the. Numbers all the way. You know and all with them all in the fold you know. You know. You're wrong on that. You know. In a long. Long. Long morning you know nothing and. Yeah and you could just tell the love in the friendship and the collegiality in the details you know a lot of details about this man's life and listen to the laughter in the crowd Greg Norman the great champion calls into a talk show in remembers his friend on Obama I've known 35 years plus years I knew him on the golf course and very much the golf course in a locker room. Touch social settings where he cut to the individual and quite honestly stood there's 2 people that have well actually 3 but 2 of the sporting world at the back he acted my life dramatically and that would be Ahmed Ali and Arnold Palmer had magnetism and charisma using out of their skin. And of the people all the people. Well imagine being in that company 2 guys one of them is Muhammad Ali the others on Obama Here's Greg Norman on how Palmer brought money to the game people with money to the game you know every player to pay a debt of thanks and thank you to Arnold Palmer for what he's done these guys went back away 111500000 dollars yesterday Roy McElroy could never won 11500000 dollars if it wasn't Bravo Palmer what he did bringing the audience to the game a goal through the t.v. Screen and here's Norman giving advice to younger players every young player today should go back and watch old footy give you all forty's were on a was walking down the families there were no gallery rows back then you actually walked down to have people were touching the ceiling he's telling you talking to you wanted to be involved you know on a live braced every single one of them at the day you know there's a lot of players a very stoic I get it from security concerns and all that stuff like you know you have security everywhere and people write off every right get it but quite honestly Onil was the one that brought people to campaign for people to the game of golf that we should all holes that back and take a week of looking old at all the old footage of Arnold Palmer and how he put people to the game of golf and this could apply to your business is going to flood your church into your family and that's just his openness is willingness to reveal him self to others share with others and just love on other people in total strangers. Here's the legendary sportscaster Jim Nantz and my goodness he was just tearing up the whole day Jim which is struggling I've never ever seen Jim Nantz struggle he does Super Bowls there's nothing Jim doesn't do is here Jim with Gary Player go out and watch Arnold Palmer or they walk around 18 holes watch how many hands he shakes how many people he makes eye contact with look at the patients he had with people with autographs I mean people just swarming on I mean he's been so wonderful. And here's Bill Murray and you know me as an actor my goodness a Bill Murray could do or be anything that would be a professional golfer and if he could be one person there's no doubt he'd want to be on Obama let's take a listen to Bill Murray who is on for the way in our friends over at USA Today oh well you know I mean I remember playing golf when he was grinding because he was getting ready for a senior. Open. From news very focused on playing and then it was ended in tears and he's signed autographs for about almost 3 full hours straight by reciting like a musician down look at giving him a lecture class or Rolling Rock which he signed like 2 hours and 45 minutes on your . Knees or just. You know we'll be doing an hour and Bruce Springsteen soon has his memoir Born to Run is something almost anyone should read even if you're not a music fan but for anybody who ever had the opportunity to see Bruce in a concert it was really the same thing the 1st guy to go out into the audience the throne self into the audience and the 1st guy to just say as long as the audience is out there I'm going to keep playing and still to this day in his mid sixty's playing for our concerts because his feeling is look folks have driven a long way to see me this may be the only time they've ever seen me or ever will they put down their hard money hard earned money on the line and I'm going to give them back more than I possibly can as Jon Stewart once said about him he leaves no gas in the tank. And on Palmer left no gas in the tank. When we come back we'll hear from Dan Patrick Well here on Obama talk about his father his roots and so much more including how Arnold Palmer professionalized and commercialised professional sports This is Leah b. This is our American stories we're celebrating the life of Arnold Palmer That was the kickoff to the 2016 masters and what a better way to do it and to introduce to the public again and always the man who won for green jackets for now let's pick up with more celebrations we just heard from Bill Murray who has one more we wanted to play before we dig into the life of Arnold Palmer Oh my goodness what better way the recall a life and to hear the voices of so many different people from so many different walks of life here's the broadcaster Dan Patrick talking about the impact Palmer had on him and I still go back to one of my favorite stories one of my favorite moments in doing this was at the Fred Meyer challenge Peter Jacobson he hosted this in Portland and he'd have all the golf pros there raising money for charity and I brought the radio show up there with Rob Dibble when I was at the mothership and we're on the 18th and then I thought Arnold and Jack and Peter Jacobson were playing the 18th and I thought I would bring a microphone out there while on the show live and follow them off to the side so Peter Jay can still looks at me on the side of the fairway woods. And he's the motions for me to comedians and I don't even know what he's talking about they're playing and I I walk out on the course and Jake goes isn't this great I said Yeah like what am I doing out here and he said walking with us walking with us so I'm behind Arnold Palmer Jack Nicklaus Peter Jacobsen going into the 18th and to walk up and hear that swell hear that applause they hear it all the time but to be able to see it from their perspectives still when the great moments ever have an ornery was so generous I remember that hand shaking his head hurt he was a big hand he had these big forearms but he was he was James Bond before James Bond he was dashing he made golf cool he just fun to be around and he hadn't played in 43 years the last time he was on tour p.g.a. Tour 43 years and he was still one of the top earners he had this names this name that rose above his sport for he was his own soft drink and he was famous in you know non golf circles and that's when you know you've made it since but Arnold Palmer had his own plane I mean everything about him you know you want to claim he wore a cardigan and looks great There's just something about Arnold. He just had a heater in his mouth and his sleeves rolled up and just ready to go whatever it was we're ready to go we're ready to go a little bit about his life he's born in the trove Pennsylvania working class steel mill town the son of Doris and Milford Jerome Deacon Palmer he learned golf from his father who had suffered from polio at a young age and was head professional and greenskeeper County country club allowing young Arnold to accompany his father as he maintained the course let's hear Arnel talk about his father and how his dad was his biggest influence. Describing him as well tough but honest he was a tough hard working golf pro and he learned both ends of the as the hard way by periods and by personal. Work and and fun and. He was tough that he never he never let up so they stayed tough all as life and. Competitor fact I think about it since he died a tough guy played 27 holes and golf just the day he passed and he was tough he was on us. And. He was probably as honest. Has I've ever seen anyone and he just he said it the way it was he did it the way it was. He he helped everybody he could. He contributed probably the toughest guys because he dealt with was his son. Palmer goes on to talk about not having much money in his early life growing up and the sacrifices he's dead meat in my family my father and our in our family our had no money most of our early lives the reason we would come out and hunt rabbits and Faizon and. And take him home and my mother would soak for him and salt water over night and then we'd eat them the next day and that was great stuff. That was part of all of the education. And my father when he flogged groceries if he didn't have enough money to pay for it I remember him scraping up on the funny to go pay the bill and he did and he sacrificed the things that he likes to pay the bills for groceries we ate and that was his life that was the way he lived in the early days and then of course he told me how he appreciated the fact that he was lucky enough to be a golf pro and to. Be able to make a living doing what he was doing and here's Arnold talking about his dad's 1st compliments the 1st compliment Arnold ever gets of him and he was after winning the National Amateur Championship nice corn boy and that's all he said but. In a way wasn't that the 1st time he complimented you my father was very tough he was never one for throwing out rewards or. Congratulations and and when he said Nice Go on boy I knew what it meant and I felt it and I was grateful I called it the turning point. Yes and it was a turning point in the way that it gave me the confidence that I needed to go ahead turn pro and get on tour and play and of course with the contract that I had with Wilson which goes back a few years. It was pretty restricted because. Getting a lot of money I was caring enough to survive. And we're going to talk about that restrictive relationship with Wilson in the nature of the business of golf and the business of sports in just a minute as we go to the last part of our celebration what you're about to hear about Arnold Palmer my goodness I had no idea myself but that victory was the turning point in his life we need the u.s. Amateur in Detroit in 1954 after that match Palmer stopped the job he had at the time of selling paint and then continued to play in tournaments there in a weight Memorial Tournament in Shawnee and Delaware Pennsylvania he met his future wife when he waltzer and they would remain married for 45 years until her death in 1909. And on all remarried again in 2005 and his kids were so happy and so were friends and one just said this in a golf magazine about Dad I think the companionship the dad is now found with his new wife hit is just what he needed I think he needed someone that enjoys the things he enjoys I think that everybody embraced her in a way that I don't think well I don't think she ever felt there was a looming presence of my mom but I think it's nice to see my dad finally again with someone he loves. And it took him 6 years to find new love and I think again one woman man simple life simple principles by the way the way he talked about his dad it almost word for word sounds like Brett Farve and the way he talked about his dad not to buil in snide a kind word every minute but when he finally did say Good job son or that a boy my goodness those words meant something these fathers were living in examples of how to be good dads it may not have spoken the words a lot but they were there their presence was felt the love felt. For the story you're about to hear let's get the 30000 overview from Dominic Chu who filed this report for c n b c and look back on Obama's legacy off the golf course his business and endorsement deals have made him one of the richest sports figures in history he's endorsed dozens of brands everything from Cadillac to Hertz to Rolex to Pennzoil same Pennzoil new package according to Forbes his net worth is estimated to be around $875000000.00 and that lands him at 3rd among the world's highest paid athletes Palmer's business empire has a variety of different operations among them a golf course is on company that had a hand in the creation of over $300.00 golf courses all across the world he had an ownership interest in famed golf resort Pebble Beach he teamed up with a lawyer named Mark McCormick and that relationship was a cornerstone to what would eventually become sports agency giant International Management Group or I am even licenses name to one of his favorite drinks a mixture of lemonade and nice tea the Arizona beverage company produces over 400000000 cans of Arnold Palmer's each year and it's fitting that television propel them to start of an uncertainty years for in 1905 he helped start the Golf Channel which at the time was the 1st ever single sport cable network this week the golfing world converges on Chaska Minnesota for the USA versus Europe Ryder Cup competition it's held every 2 years remembering all cultures life and contributions to the game is expected to be a part of the celebration put off the course Palmer will be remembered as one of the kings of sports marketing laying the groundwork for other athletes to follow in the legacy that he worked so hard to create for Nightly Business Report I'm Dominic Chu at the New York Stock Exchange and metformin wrote a terrific piece on what Arnold Palmer meant to the modernization commercialisation of sports. And when it was time to renew his contract with Wilson and it was at the time just almost a slave labor contract they just barely paid anybody anything Palmer and Wilson spent a year in the goshi Asians eventually drafting a long term deal but Palmer knew that something was missing. Any want to get the deal done but he also wants is one other thing which is a life insurance policy and a life insurance policy that would protect his 2 young daughters. Case anything happened to driving around. In the middle of the night flying in rickety planes all over the country and. Pretty soon thereafter all over the world this is not the safest thing and everything with a life insurance policy would to protect their families it would cost $880.00 a year and they would have been taking money that would have been gone to him that income anyway before it went to him is income buying a tax deferred life insurance. And everyone says Ok except for James Cooney who was the c.e.o. Of Wilson at the time and you know he just did not have any respect for athletes innocent golfers and it was just no way he could think of giving a life insurance policy for even at a low cost of $800.00 a year to a golfer and that became all Palmer's line in the sand there was a hard line Palmer left Wilson as soon as his contract allowed and started his own business there were so many things that could have gone wrong so why did Palmer take such a chance. Because he realized that if he didn't do it. Golfers and athletes were just never going to be respected if the best golfer in the world the most charismatic athlete on the planet at that point. Wasn't going to get a fair deal and then no one was going to get a fair deal and that's why he that's why he said enough is enough and it turned out alright because. None of those terrible things happened he wants the Arnold Palmer golf company within about 3 years of him turning down the deal with Wilson for making roughly $10000.00 a year off the sale of a quick min and golf balls and things like that they had a name on it too making roughly 500000 year for that and that was the launch of an empire. And by the way for a little bit of levity we heard about that drink Here's Arnold Palmer telling the story of how the drink came to be named after him well I will tell you it started right here about a 100 yards from where we are. But I came home one day and my wife made a lot iced tea for lunch and I said hey babe I've got an idea I said you make the ice tea make a big picture and we'll just put a little lemonade in it and see how that works and we we mixed it up and then I got the solution about where I wanted it and I put the lemonade in it and I had it for lunch after working on the golf course and I thought boy this is great babe I'm going to take it when I play golf I'm going to take a thermos of ice tea and lemonade it was building a golf course in Palm Springs did it was a very hot summer day it was about 115 degrees and we had gone in for lunch and I. Said to the waitress could you do me a favor and she said sure what is it I said I want to nice t.v. But I want to buy a oh it's 3rd or a quarter of it and lemonade all of a sudden the waitress went over to another table and and the lady at the table. Said I want an oral Palmer. Well all of us turned our heads thought of what is she talking about and she said I want what he ordered and it was there was me and it was and that was the year and she called it an Arnold Palmer Well from that day on it spread like wild far I was embarrassed to ask for an Arnold Palmer I only say Can I have her or an iced tea. And what about a 3rd of it in lemonade and they said oh you want an Arnold Palmer. Just finally said well I will fight the battle on the moral just as for oral. Faith maybe they will know who I am. And always self-deprecating and you've heard of a lot of people this hour from Bill Murray and you're going to hear from Jim Nantz in a bit and Dan Patrick but the best story of all was by Bob Greene and we tried to reach him but Bob just hard to reach so I'm going to do a reading of his column because Bob such a good writer and here's his story and I think this illustrates why Palmer was so loved Here's Arnold Palmer who is everything and here's a kid with a folded up chief of copy paper and a ballpoint pen who is nothing and in a split 2nd Palmer has to make a decision the decision whichever way it goes well in effect Palmer's life it all but has the potential to make the kid give you with delight or to make him feel like an embarrassed idiot this is the summer of 1967 Palmer has flown to central Ohio to play in a one day program at 37 years old he is one of the most adored and respected figures in American sports the kid is me I've caged a summer job helping out the lower circulation daily in a 2 paper town I'm working nights so I don't have to be in the office until mid afternoon so I go to the golf course by myself in the morning there are many golfers playing in the program a lot of them local duffers but the crowds are following Arni It's as if the Beatles were performing on a hill and on a bill with a bunch of garage bands there are ropes holding back the throngs the vaunted Arnie's army from one t. Palmer comes into view hitching up those trousers like no one else could. He's striding swiftly toward where his ball has landed and here's the idiot part I duck under the ropes and walk right up to him You're not supposed to do such a thing you're not supposed to go under the ropes I didn't know maybe I did I start to ask Palmer a question those pieces of copy paper in my hand triple folded like I had seen the real reporters do and the marshals are approaching this is not going to be good if I'm tossed out or carried out it will be in front of all of those people it will be a pretty comical humiliating scene and my uncle Harmon my mother's brother is one of those people in the gallery who will witness it I ask Palmer the question he gives me a look who the heck are you I work at the local paper I tell him I don't mention just how low level and transitory my job is or that no one is assigned me to be at the tournament and here's the moment here's where Palmer either will motion for the marshals or give me the heave ho or he won't he kind of laughs at the absurdity of this who is dumb enough at a professional golf event to duck under the ropes and approach a player and not just any player the most revered player in the game Palmer patiently answers the question he generously gestures to keep me walking with him he gives the marshals a little signal don't worry about it this will be fine thus for that one magical day a day that when it started I had no reason to believe would be anything other than an exceptional I walk the entire golf course in the company of Arnold Palmer Wow And so we close things out here honoring the death of Arnold Palmer he died on this day in history in 2016 and as always our this day in histories are brought to us by the great folks at Hillsdale College the best and finest place to study all the things that matter in life.
