George, utah. But his true focus is looking toward the future. Rich is among a farreaching community known as biohackers. [sotrich lee biohacker basically biohacking is approaching biology with a hacker ethic. Also called grinding or transhumanism. A background in science isnt necessary. Simply a desire to go beyond whats humanely possible. And put your own body on the line. [sotlee]im a bit reckless and i have a higher other people do. By implanting chips, magnets among other devices these doityourself citizen scientists become superhuman. [sotlee]its like theres a new layer to the world. Rich can feel electricity and Magnetic Fields with the tip of his finger. [sotlee]ill just do this on the bar top and it will catch somebodys eye. Theyll go, whoa how are you doing that . And ill go, i dont know . His ears are also wireless headphones. [sotlee] pretty much any device that is bluetooth enabled i can interface with it. So i can listen to music on my phone, i can take phone calls. A forearm to rich. Is also a thermometer. [sotlee]i can scan it with a scanner and it wil tell me my temperature. And a chip in the web of his hand. Capable of sending messages to his phone. [sotlee]here we go. Thank you for watching. The world of biohacking exists mostly on the web. A virtual think tank where grinders connect from all over the world. [sotlee]our community is pretty tight knit and its grown a lot. Grindhouse wetware is based in pennsylania. The biotech startup is currently in trials and will begin selling implantable devices this year. Heres ryan oshea. [sotryan oshea grindhouse wetware]what i am interested in is functional implants that can track my health data, that can make me a stronger, faster, a better human. But controversial. And illegal in many parts of the country [sotoshea]there is a lot of legal questions that are hindering our growth right now. To skirt the system. Grinders go underground, and find body modification artists through word of mouth. [sot] as soon as people realized that they could become a robot, it just like exploded. People can link themselves up to their macbooks, and their cellphones, and their houses. Undergoing elective, sub dermal implants. [sot]i see more and more, just every average everyday people getting body modifications and still going to their normal jobs. In the world of biohacking. The possibilities are truly endless. [sotoshea]we have biologists on the team, we have software developers, we have hardware developers, all these different engineers, all coming together. And the risks of selfexperimentation are real. [sotlee]do you ever worry about the longterm side effects of having a foreign object in your body . Oh absolutely. In fact i check them every day there is no such thing as a permanent object in your body. But where there exists danger, there also lies the opportunity of progress. [sotoshea] we left the plains of africa, we crossed the oceans, we ventured into space, and i think the next logical step is to transcend our biological limitations. These citizen scientists are driven by a curiosity to advance the human race. One biohack at a 3 scientists have learned a little more about the universe. And proven Albert Einstein right. They think theyve found gravitational waves. Predicted by einstein but never observed. Two huge antennas. One in washington state. The other in louisiana. Detected a gravitational wave last september. This confirms einstein was right as like a fabric. Woven from the three dimensions plus time. What physicists call spacetime. The gravititational wave was set off by two black holes that crashed. Sending a ripple through that fabric. The effect is so tiny. One scientist estimated the ripple compressed the entire Milky Way Galaxy about the width of a thumb. Observing that the fabric of the universe stretches and compresses may open an entirely new understanding of nature. 3 3 3 3 Lawton Bronson and elk Point Jefferson came down to the final shot in a battle of teams with state tournament hopes. Heres your c net tech update. 3 a turning point for twitter . And is hbo now growing too slowly . Im jeff bakalar filling in for bridget carey. This is your cnet update. After what was mostly a released yesterday, twitter is having major issues convincing wall street its the real deal. Most discouraging, twitter cant grow its userbase. That number has not moved since last quarter. Farhad manjoo of the New York Times writes that twitter needs to reconsider what kind of company it is. Maybe its not the blockbuster Silicon Valley powerhouse that wall street wants it to be. Perhaps its not meant to emulate the googles and facebooks of the world. Instead, twitter is more like a public utility, a newswire, a transcription of the world. Manjoo doesnt say twitter cant make money, but maybe normalizing expectations is the first step in bringing the stillgreat service back down to earth. Hbo now, the a la carte 15 a Month Streaming Service has seen a slower than expected adoption rate. Its been a little less than a year analysts had projected subscriptions to be close to the 2 million mark. But in reality, about 800,000 people have signed up for the service. But on the flip side, 800,000 signups is nothing to scoff at. Hbo ceo Richard Plepler defended the numbers reminding us that hbo now was only available on apple tv for its first 3 months. Also, hbo now isnt really available on as many devices as you might think, especially game consoles. Its yet to hit the ps4 or xbox one, which actually make up 20 percent of hbo gos audience. Hbo still has tons of new content coming through this year, including shows from jon stewart, bill simmons and a Daily News Program from vice. And finally, comcast is trying to preemptively warn potential google fiber customers in atlanta to quote not fall for the hype. In a flyer posted by a reddit user, comcast is trying to compare their Internet Service with googles, but as some reddit users pointed at, a lot of these bulletpoints come with signficant example, comcasts fastest home wifi claim leaves out the fact that anyone can simply buy a faster router with their google fiber service. Also. Google offers gigabit internet at 70 a month where comcasts 2gbps service goes for 300 1000 in startup fees. So yeah, id be for Everything Else head over to cnet. Com.
