Morning rounds, you hope in our morning rounds. New hope for Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer. One of the largest studies of its kind coming out this morning. The Research Finds that a blood test combined with ultrasound reduces the risk ofying from e disease by 20 prz. David agus leads the Westside Cancer Center at the university of southern california. He is in los angeles. David, good morning. You think the study is a big deal . No question. One of the largest Clinical Trials ever done. 200,000 women. Three groups. One had a blood test. They looked at change over time of this marker followed by an ultrasound if it was abnormal. The second was people just getting the ultrasound. The third was they did nothing. If you take out the women who had Ovarian Cancer when they entered the study there was about a 20 reduction over 14 years in the deaths of Ovarian Cancer. This is a cancer where it classically presents late. And if this were implemented in the united states, we would save about 3,500 lives per year. Whats the breakthrough in terms of the test . Well, wese this test i several other studies to try to identify ovarian ncer. Inhis study they didnt just look at the absolute number. They looked at the change in the number with an algorithm combined with other risk factors. Its looking at the delta, the change, which looked at the difference compared to the other studies. Because of the size of the study and the length showed the susuival advantage. When you gegethe news of Ovarian Cancer, its devastating news. Why is it so hard to detect this particular kind of cancer . Because of where it is in the body it classically presents later. By the time there are symptoms its a big cancer and its too hard to actually cure. So the death rate of this cancer is pretty high. With only about 45 of People Living five years after diagnosis. So this is one this is the first study ever too show that Early Detection saves lives. S. So its a p ptty important finding in Ovarian Cancer. Thats the question. Early detection. So should women be asking their doctors for these tests now . Thats a key question. This study is important, but it was one piece of the puzzle. There are some statistical reasons why this may not be yet definitive. It may take a year or two to really make this definitive. So its going to be a debate. Do we implement it now because we can potentially save lives and the risk is there, but its low. Cancer. There is still a false positive risk that, as you can go through it. So this is the beginning of it. But hopefully this will actually mark what we, in the cancer world what we believe in, which really is prevention and Early Detection detection. That will make the impact. Is there an age where we should start worrying about this . Cancer goes up as you get older. The study was done in post menopausal women. Got trapped in a grain bin near the southern iowa town of murray. Rescue crews were called in at 9 oclock yesterday morning. Reasland and the owner of the farm climbed to the top of the bin. There was a frozen crust over it. The owner nt down to start t auger. When he got back to the top. Reasland wasnt there. 3 a two car crash sent a couple of people to the hospital last night in sioux city. The accident happened after seven oclock. A car and a mini van crashed at the intersection of indiana and south martha in morningside. One of the cars went into the front of a house in the 900 block of south martha. Knocking the gas meter loose. So the gas had to be shut off. One person in each car was taken to the hospital. We dont know how hurt that person n s. The bataclan far and away the massacre happened and a whole area of crisis. France is at a country at war. U. S. Officials are calling the attack a gamechanger. This is an attack on all humanity. They sit six sites and in the span of just 32 minutes. Darkness fell on the city of life. This was an attack on our very way of life. This is an attack on the way the west lives. The staff of Charlie Hebdo with publish as normal. Could an attack in paris happen in the u. S. . On a couple of levels. Ill take a bullet before you, thats for damn sure. This was supposed to be a happy occasion but it turned into a shooter scene. The two gunmen were killed by police justt hours after the rampage. Bill northey made a few stops in siouxland yesterday as part of h h 99 county t tr. 3 one e them was in the momona he went to the co op elevator and met with farmers. One of the things they talked about was this years bird flu outbreak that killed 34 million turkeys and chickens. He says farmers are investing in bio security. Truck washes. And shower in shower out facilities. Northey says there is a worry we could see another outbreak next spring. But he also says were better prepared to handle it now. 3 for the second Straight YearFarmland Values havavdropped all through most of iowa. But for northwest iowa. Its a little bit of a different story. The latest survey from Iowa State University says values have dropped around 4 percent this year. With the average acre of land worth 310 dollars less. Its the first two year drop in land values since the year 2000. The amount of the drop is lower because of Higher Commodity Prices last year. Northwest iowa is the only area that didnt seeeevalues drop though. A tract of land near boyden sold for a record price of 21,900 dollar per acre. Thats all the time i have for now.
