For the first time in the republican president ial race, ben carson leads Donald Trumpp in a nationon poll. The cbs news New York Times poll out this morning shows the dramatic shift. The two candidates have switched places since our last poll. 26 of Republican Voters say they support carson. 22 of backing donald trump. Trumps support among women Republican Voters fell from 25 hand count to 19 . Women now give carson an eighghpoint advantage. I was just looking at this poll. Seven in ten republican primary voters say its too early to say for sure their mind is made up. Seven in ten, 70 , so i think this race could still change a great deal according to these numbers. Also we should point out trump faces new controversy for a comment about muslim women. On monday trump criticized u. S. Efforts to spread freedom to the middle east. He saiaithere was too much focus burqas. We want it where the women over there dont have to wear the you know what. And then i said oh, that makes sense. Thats nice. Then i saw women interviewed. Cbs newswsew york times poll, according to that poll and that is a long way from a certain oher blunttalking president ial some polls suggest christie is being hurt by donald trump more than any other republican in the 2016 race. The governor and his wife, mary pat, invited us to their new jersey home last week. We talked about his family, his recent comments on gun control and tough competition on the campaign trail. Why d dyou think donald trump is resonating with so many people at this particular time . Well, listen, i think donald first off is a reality tv star. Weve never had a reality tv star run for president before. Somehow do you see him as a reality tv star and not a smart, astute businessman . No, hes that too. Weve had plenty of smart, astute businessmen run for president before. He comes in with early100 name identification because they were on a very popular tv show. The people know him and they generally like him. And they love the character that he played on the show. And so those are all things that are advantages that no one else in the race has. But right now the polls are yeah, i noticed. Im not rubbing it in, but theyre not in your favor. Even the residents in your own state are notaying Chris Christie is our guy. Yeah. Thats got to sting a little bit. No, its kind of natural. How is that natural, governor . Because when you say that you want to leave and take another job, people get offended. You all have children in college, high school, middle school, so School Shootings must hit close to home but yet you seem reluctant to embrace tighter gun control laws. Why is that . Now, theres not a gun control law on the boooo now o o proposed that would have prevented that, unless, unless the people who knew that that young man was disturbed went to the authorities and got him involuntarily committed. If he were in a hospital rather than on the streets, those people may not have been killed in connecticut. Do you know your neighbors . Sure, yeah. I said one day during the workweek i want to make sure youre home at family dinner. They all have family dinners together. Thats an organizational feat with four kids, a dad who is governor and a mom with a successful career on wall street. Do you still do that now, family dinner. We still do it. Lets talk about maryat being ththbread winner, s s to speak, of the family for a while. Not so to speak. Lets talk about that. Because for many people, men in particular, its very difficult earns more, when the wife is the primary bread winner of the family. Yeah, it was never a problem for us. I mean, you know, we started our life together ishat because hes secure in who he is . Perhaps. But honestly its all weve ever known. Its all weve ever known. Chris was in law school when we first got married, so from the beginning i was paying School Tuition bills and working. So it was kind of natural. Its not something that we thought about or ever really cared about honestly. Never cared about. Never cared about. Im really proud of her. I mean i think the end of it iss to put all the gender stuff aside. Shes my partner and im proud of her. A lot of men dont look at it that way. Yeah, i dont know why. I think mary pat is a great example for our daughters in particular, that, you know, your worth does not come from who you marry. Your worth comes from who you are. And for our sons, i think for false macho aboutou have to be the bigger b bad winner, you have to be the bigger presence isnt the way it has to be. Youve been together since you were 22. We actually were friends since i was, gosh, 19, 18 or 19. How did what made you fall in love with him and the same to you . But i want mary pat to go first. I always found him really interesting, but in addition to that, he was veryfunny. And makes you laugh . And makes me laugug what attracted you to her . Shes cute, first. I mean i am a guy. Thats a given. I am a guy. She didnt mention anything about that. You were cute too. No, thats all right, dont worry about it. We have to be honest. No, i thought she was cute, so that starts it. Shes still cute, governor. Yes. Well, theres no doubt about thth. Next year, governor chrhrtie and mary patill celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Its just one part of our life. Most likely on the road, campaigning for president. I dont know any teenager that doesnt think its cool to live in the white house. Why do you think that youre better than the other candidates who are running . The presidency is all about being tested. And theres no one whos been in this race thats been more stified than ive been. Hillary clinton has been pretty tested, wouldnt you say . Yeah, i would. Would you say youve been moreested than Hillary Clinton . Well, listen, i think in different ways, yeah, because my responsibilities i think in many was have been greater than hers have been. I think when youre in charge of a state and youre the ultimate accountable person for what happens in that state over a period of time, i do think that ats a much more personal challenge than the challenge of being secretary of state, for instance, or being one of a hundred United States senators. I know theres no test, no challenge that will come that i wont be up for. And that doesnt mean that everybody will agree with everything that i do, but it he says, guys, that hes ready. To your point, norah, about the poll that seven out of ten people havent made up their mind, i know hes thinking, yeah, thats wt im talking about. Hes not where he wants to be, clearly, but he believes theres a long way tgo in this race. Does he say hell stay in until it sorts itself out . He tells me hes going to be the nominee, but he says hes got staying power. But d ds he,though . . He says he does. Its interesting, carson changes the dynamic of who the frontrunner is, how that might affect the race. Its a long way until next november. Yeah. February is important. Thats the beginning of the iowa, new hampshire. This morning the cofounder and ceo of facebook is making some news not for what he said but how he said it. Mark zuckerberg gave a morehan 20minute speech in Mandarin Chinese at a university in beijing. It is not the first time hes listen. [ speaking Foreign Language ] wow. This is his first speech in the language. Facebook is eager to expand in facebook where it rememns blococd. A a they say is chinese is very hard to learn. Very hard. Impressive. Hes been taking lessons. He knows. For years probably. Broadcasting legend ted koppel is here. His new project is keeping him what hes learning aboutut major retail chain says it will be closed on black friday. The ceo of outdoor retailer rei is in the toyota green room to talk about that. Well ask him where hed rather see employees and customers on that very busy shopping day. Thats next. This morningsed on black the ceo told employees employees, while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we hope to see you in the great outdoors. He is with us in studio 57. You will take their money online, right . Actually, we have a takeover screen that covers up our online site and encourages them to drop offline as well. Why are you doing that . We thought, how will we be you a thint tick . The day after thanksgiving . We came the conclususn was the most authentic things we cando, we are passionate about it. You are saying there is more to be gained by brand identity and the value of the company than whatever sales you might have on plaque friday . I think its important for brands to be true to who they are. For us, encouraging people to get outside, particularly on a holiday like thanksgiving, we believe that is an i iortant message. Was there m mh resistance within the company . I would say if there was a resistance, maybe it was me, like, are you kidding . No. It was very enthusiastally embraesd. I thought a lot of people were saying what is jerry smoking . Whose idea, how did it come about . It was nine months ago, gave the team the challelee, how do we do something, it was a bit shocking, but the more we thought about it. The more excited we got about it as an idea that one our associates would love but two as a cooperative of 5 million member, with era elwe really believe they can take offs well. Is itne of the busiest opping years . This is our sec year of double digit growth. Thats what you call a good year. Thats a good year. But i do believe as a authentic about what were authentic about. We spend more time taking people to the outdoors. Will you do an ad about this . We took an ad letting people we are closed. Its not about authenticity and brand . Very much so. Do you think its become too cluttered a marketplace on plaque prid . Everybody is opened at, what timel 5 00 in the morning, all night to get the tv on sale at kmart. With eshow the pick, everybody rushing the aisles. So this was not only a marking decisisi . I would say it was more a brand. I think its a brand perspective, the contrast between what is happening on black friday and i think the joy associated with being outside is rather stark so its a particularly good day to maim the point how popular it is outside. Thestep skeptics say, jerry, yoyo sound nice andfuzzy, we want people to get outside, it could be a huge pr employers, some people could say. I would be a little different. I dont expect to see a bunch of other retailers close on black friday. Think about that. If you want attention to the fact that are you doing this. I think that attention creates the platform of the power of getting outstse. I think its great. A great idea. I love your hiking boots. Absolutely, three grandsons coming out, we will go up on the mountain. Sides 10, thank you, jerry. Bravo to you and your company. Are you going to ask what hes doing tonight . No. Thank you, jerry. Its been three years since super storm sandy made landfall dark. Heat and light did not return in some cases for nearly two weeks. But what if terrorists go after our power grids . Pea body aword winner investigated. This new book is lights out. Welcome him to studio 57. Good morning, sir. Good morning, charlie. Good to see you here. I spend every morning with you. Thats how i start my day. And a bowl of rice. A bowl ofrice . That keeps you regular. Its lets start with the book. Are we there talking about something, not a question of whether, but when . Thats exactly the way the four star general put it. He says, its not a question of if, its just a question of when. The chinese emotions already havessentially a cyber time bombs inside out power grid. They probably wont use them because which and the chinese and the russians have so many interconnected relationships. If you start thinking about the iranians and the North Koreans and groups like isis, they all are developing the same kind of capability and theyyouldnt be rererained the same way that the chinese and the russians are. You know whats so frustrated about the book, its not a question of if, but when, we are not prepared, reading your book made it. It was very frightening to me how little prepared we are. What scares me, gayle, is the fact that people in governmnmt, leon panetta, the president twice in state of the Union Addresses has warned about those kind of things happening. When you ask, however, what the governments preparations are for the public in the event that Something Like this were to transfire i pire and we would be potentially tens of millions of peopleleithout electricity for months at a time. If they dont view it you are vently . What im saying is, there is no plans, there are plans for hurricanes, snowstorms, plans for earthquakes, there is no plan for a cyber attack that would be infinitely longer in duration and more widespread than any of those natural disasters. You on an interview, you sat down with the Homeland Security, what did you say when you asked him of a lack of plans or lack of one . He point. Ed at white biernsd and said im sure there is a plan out there. I said, dont you think that would be smart to get that plan out to the public before t tre is a massive breakin, in electrical power . He said, look, this is a relatively simple. You need a. My question is, when the power goes out, what are we going to tell people . Or word he got a lick i little prickly. He did get a little prickly. We d d reach out no former Homeland Security. We got a full page of details in the case of an attack. They said how they coordinate with fema and local officials, theyre working with the private support. I think to your point, if the lights went out, its more than just the light. Explain what could actuallll happen to people if there is a massive cyber attack. In a place like manhattan, for example, if the power goes out. You know how the Fire Department and the police are the first couple of days, getting people out of stalled elevators, you are talki million mres, meals ready to eat. But when you take several and divide it by 8 million. Are you talking maybe a two or threeday food supply. What happens on day four . What happens on day five . What country is prepared in. Ll,ey have made a culture of preparing for disaster. Theyre ready for it. Most of the rest of us are not. You point out in your book, for the first time the government do you ever let this guy ask a question . Okay. Go ahead. No, no, go ahead. Gayle reads your entire book. She read the buyer book. Im sorry. I shouldnt have said that. How long are you staying here . Im so excited about the book, let me just ask you this, you said for the first time the government needs to worry about the internet being a weapon of mass destruction. Absolutely. You also y, how do you prepare for somethinghen you dont know where and when it could come from . It can come from anywhere . What im suggesting ise need to prepare for the consequences of a cyber attack. Its not enough just to say, yes, we know its going to happen. We dont know where, when, how many people will b b affected. We are not ready. Thth first secretary of Homeland Security said to me, you know, we are not a preemptive society. We react to events. We did in the wake of 9 11, we spent 3 trillion. Ted, you already said that leon panetta in his Senate Confirmation hrings said the next pearl harbor will be a cyber attack. You talked about the fact that the president mentioned it. You would think that that alone would create some sense of urgency. I think people are a little bit worried about preparing the American Public for something they are not 100 sure is going to ppen. My sense of it, though, is were better off prepared. Lets say we prepared for something that doesnt happen. Then we will at least be prepared for any other disaster that is going along. After spending two years on this, i am convinced at some point or another its going to happen. Sandy is an cakes of the consequences. Is there a b bef answer to tht question . The only brief answer is i heard some of these warnings, i pied up the phone. Called homelandsecurity. I lled fema. I called the red cross. I got stuck in three different phone freeze. Listening to your voice, god, i miss you ted koppel on tv. Do you miss it . Do you miss the daytoday . Not terribly. The dayyday, not at all. Dont worry about me talking. We do an hour. York. Questions. He will be ready for it. Ted cop em, thank you. Thank you so much. Little stephen is keepingis one person sounds like that.
