Very serious started pretty touchy difficult subject in modern day society this whole issue of domestic violence we're talking also a little bit about toxic anger and more God lead you down a road it's amazing I regard you as one of the experts in Christianity in this area very Tell us how you got involved how this all started it began in my studies and working with dangerous clients I worked in prisons I work with men on probation and parole I ran visitation programs in California Donovan state prison I've been to San Quentin worked with an mates on death row I got into this and beginning to understand and you see the way I figure it is God did not send me into the prison to help anybody he sent me in there to be broken out tell you why when God comes back in his foot touches the Mount of Olives is going to split when he's going to come walking on this earth and I think he's going to be looking for his treasure and he may step over a few churches because Guess where we do with our treasure we lock it away and a lot of these men's as I'm working in the prisons I'm drove can by the fact that God's treasure is in here also and that these men through circumstances through I mean I don't hug a thug I have cops tell me I will bury your out there hug and I said No no I don't get the bug that isn't going on but what it is as I see real people I see people caught up in sin and I see people that come by their circumstances on Asli they used to bring lay people into the prison to work with prisoners and there Donovan was a new program and I was recruiting from different churches in this biscuit Pelion pastor his name is Fred and Fred called me up because I get a application from the prisoner and and by the way the prisoner we're looking for is the one who's the mom and dad said don't write home and the wife says you're getting a divorce you see that's the guy most likely to recidivate go back to crime when he gets out that is the one is hopeless and helpless and depressed there are very few counseling programs for men I got a pamphlet while. Back and I had about 211 different programs for various things that women were dealing with in the world and counseling programs and help programs there wasn't one for men you know what we have for mental health from in this country prison and jail and probation that's it guys are sometimes trapped in some of these worlds where they're raised they're built up they all they've seen is drugs and degradation and that sort of thing well Fred was a pastor and I recruited him out of his church to go up to the prison and to meet one on one with an inmate and so he saw all the inmates application and and he gave me his and and I put them together and I put him with a particular inmate and I pray over them each time I did it cut please help this to be right and Fred calls me up Mrs Berry are you nuts I want well I've been accused of that a few times but what do you have in mind and he says I see the application in my inmate I see I've looked at my world he says I've never done anything like this in my life I've never been to jail I've never committed a crime why did you hook this guy up with me and I said Fred would you do me a favor or would you just trust me see there's leadership a guy will trust me he'll let me define his reality and so I say he said Ok Walt trusted this time so he goes in and at the end of the session I bring a group of these men out and we also down the side of the mountain we look back at the prison and if you can imagine there's no moon it's pitch black out and all of this side and there's this light this prison lights holding back the darkness and I looked at the guys and I said you are the light holding back the darkness. Because you have Jesus with you and I look over a friend and the tears are just flowing down his cheeks and I said Fred I think you have something to say to the guys and he said Yeah I said there but for the grace of God go I he was broke and Fred went to the prison not to help as it turned out but to be broken enough empty his cup so the guy could fill it and fill his cup with himself and annoyed. Him to do great things Barry I appreciate your heart and know your love and deep commitment to helping individuals on both side of the hour through this issue let's step back and take a look at domestic violence 1st of all there you've seen more than your share of it I know you've worked with a lot of cases you used to work out of San Diego County I know you now live in Kentucky cause your grandpa and you like being we grandkids but you still actively engaged in this and help lead our perspective on what we need to understand and know about domestic violence let's start with the level of prevalence in modern day society and even in the church what are we looking at most to Mystic violence incidences are never reported one in 4 women are going to experience domestic violence during her lifetime the same number one and for gay lesbian bisexual transgender I work with them 2 individuals also experienced domestic violence so it's not just with women it can be anybody women ages $20.00 to $24.00 are at the greatest risk of becoming a victim of domestic violence and domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women more than car accidents muggings and rapes by strangers combined they only tell your story I was counseling and never forget this lady came into my office and she had reported an incident and she was in front of me the day after and it was horrible I ask her what happened and she literally bury grabbed her throat and started choking herself right in front of me. I'm not talking about chill King or soft I'm talking about choking herself she could hardly breathe and she's choking on screaming they can't tell me why did to me and I was like oh my goodness but in that moment God gave me a very vivid picture of what it's like to be on the receiving end of somebodies anger. I know buried there are some words that get thrown around power control except as we try to unpack this that's right help us understand it what's going on I'm thinking of anger I think of bullying I think of people who may be crazy or insanely jealous or what have you and they just lose their mind tell us about though what's really in the heart mind of an abuser and then I want to talk about what's it like to be on the receiving end of that I want to add to what you just said every 9 seconds 9 seconds count $1.00 to $10.00 every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted or beaten in America every year one in 3 women who are victims of homicide are murdered by their current or former partner this is dangerous and we need to be aware of these numbers and these assault numbers we want to talk about power and control for a moment what do you think power and control are a lot of people use them interchangeably I want to start with power power is a leadership concept in my home I'm the servant leader what does that imply I'm concerned about my wife my family I'm my dogs Butler I mean I'm there to serve them when I go into a family and I'm doing just regular counseling one of the things I want to know is who is the power broker when I look and see who the servant of the family is there's a power broker as a person who receives the power in the family is the one who is concerned about loving about and serving that family power is the ability to get someone else to accept your definition of reality as. Your own power cannot be taken it can only be given Let me say it again for your listeners power is the ability to get someone else to accept your definition of reality as their own my faculty my staff my clients my students my family give me power to define their reality to the degree that they can trust me and no further nor should they because I earned that So it's a Leadership Foundation All right control is the opposite end of the spectrum control means getting somebody else to do something using force or fear no matter how slight said again using force or fear no matter how slight and a family there is an expectation of trust and safety and when one or other members of that family violate that in a severe form such as abuse sexual assault there's all kinds of descriptions of abuse but when somebody violates that to that agree they have violated a trust the due Siri relationship and that is a major crime against a person and the court sees it that way so when the officers go into a home and the home is all tore up and there's things broken or the woman or the man is showing signs of abuse they've been hit they've been strangled like the lady you're talking about I'm telling you that goes on I agree I've seen I not seen it in action but I've seen the aftermath because I get what comes out for them we work with both batters and we work with victims the most difficult person that I deal with whether be the better that is when they see themselves as victims when they do not realize the part they play in the cycle of abuse when they do not realize that when you're looking at family systems approach that sometimes the underdog is in control and this can happen too but when you go into this situation when the police walk in they find everything tore up they're looking at several things they want physical evidence and they want to. Person to say this happened you see the crime and as far as the police and the law enforcement is concerned it's not a crime against the person is a crime against the state so the person doesn't have to sign papers in any state in the union the police have to go and the law reads they must arrest when there's physical evidence of domestic violence in the home so they want physical evidence and then the woman says you know look what he did to me like the lady that you talked to so if she's got marks on her throat that's physical evidence that supports her eyewitness testimony he's gone they must arrest and now it's up to the court system to adjudicate that and there are ways in which we can rehabilitate in California they have to spend a year with my staff each abuser that we take in and we have to answer to the court and probation we have signed releases where we answer to them are they fulfilling to the letter of the law their probation requirements so we deal under that umbrella now these women do they initiate some of this violence I'm sorry to say that law enforcement tells me these are law enforcement officers that I have both written with that I know personally and to a person they tell me that it is their experience that women can initiate up to 50 percent of all domestic violence when a 2nd she's in a situation where she's being abused or violated against But you're saying she can trigger this everybody would say come on wait a 2nd oh always stop stop the conversation just for a moment she doesn't precipitate violence here in the situation is she caught up in the cycle is this the intensity of the a moment maybe she's protecting herself I don't know I mean it could be all of the above every case is different but what I'm about to tell you is is that in some cases you've heard of the cycle of violence much a pattern of chaos that she sees we're It is in the cycle it's building up stress he's just about ready to explode so she might initiate it just to get him going she might trigger him just to get it over with so he'll go back to the honeymoon. You know any I'm sorry I'll never do it again please stay with me don't leave me and then that stress begins to build up so there are those issues there are other issues about how he responds is he has to own responsibility for that Oh absolutely absolutely and we hold them accountable Yes absolutely you see we do not hug a thug Now there are people who do it and I can't answer them I don't train them that way when I train therapist in California to do domestic violence batters programming we our main purpose is to protect the victim if we err on the side of protecting the victim so be it but that is our main course and that's in law that is in state law 1203 point 097-1203 point 098 of the well for an institution goes and it teaches us how we're to train people and how we're to supervise them in this field so we do not let the guy off the hook he has to take accountability but it may be that she initiated we have to help him understand well what part do you play in that Ok What part do you let your anger get out of control what part do you are you in that cycle of abuse now we have it in about 5 percent of cases where the women are arrested for abusing their husband leaving marks going after them with the bat there's all lot of cases where the woman is never touched and that's in property destruction and we see that a lot too where the guy will be angry at her he'll break her things this is still abuse he will punch holes in the walls he'll destroy the t.v. Mess rather harasser about the kids all of this picture I had in my mind is this woman she was talking to me about it and just like started screaming because she felt like she was in the moment where she felt completely helpless out of control and didn't know what to do so she just started screaming Did you hear her reliving that she took me there she took you there oh yeah and she knew that she was safe enough to take you there and this is another strong one horrific. Moment because you can imagine behind closed doors what goes on the intimidation and the insanity of what we what we can do each other but see there's a betrayal there he has betrayed she goes into the relationship with an expectation of trust and safety and when he hurts her he has betrayed that relationship and that is serious if I'm working in your store and you hire me to run the cash register we have a fiduciary relationship a relationship of trust now if I reach into the cash register and I take a dollar and put it my pocket and I leave what crime of I committed talk about the state of California know what crime of I committed petty theft no embezzlement when there is a fiduciary relationship of trust and you violate that it went from a misdemeanor petty theft to a felony embezzlement by the way at that same clerk goes in the back and steals subsides out of the stock room that wasn't interested whether that's petty theft but when there's the expectation of trust whether in a business relationship or a home environment this expectation of trust and safety that's a betrayal of that expectation and that agreement that when I am with you and I'm close to you and I mean your inner circle that you're going to protect me and the good husband does protect you know the sad thing is that 5 percent of men in our nation abuse but you know what the good news is 95 percent don't and we have to keep that in mind a lot of men don't abuse and a lot of times men are abandoned in their childhood they've seen abuse in their families and so they're going to recreate that because it's all they know we have to be able to help people besides just throwing them in prison Well the neat thing I get to do is I get to go in the jails I get to go in work with guys on probation and parole and I get to help them address those kinds of issues those both mental health. Issues although I don't there are PIs them but I do do what's called psychoeducational I give them alternatives have them learn things and how they could behave better what are the outcomes how are we thinking why are we thinking that way and one of the outcomes of not being in control of our feelings very I'm still in my mind staying with this and being on the receiving end of someone's anger in that I'm thinking about her being maybe sexually coerced him time thing I'm messing with her over the kids to a point where it makes her like a loser mind what is it doing to her soul to her heart Barry I think we'd be easy to talk about feelings of helplessness and anxiety and a century old is the betrayer a good word betrayal is a good word and you know something nobody deserves to be betrayed especially in a love relationship that totally distorts everything that God intends for marriage and I think it just Mars the soul it's not the way it's supposed to be no no and who's going to be the advocate in all this you know who helps or I agree with you totally I don't make excuses and I don't hug thugs I just want to make that clear to your listening audience I really do care about the victims and I care deeply about them I have sat in the counseling sessions with abuse cases where I've worked with victims and heard their sad stories and the horror and the post-traumatic stress the reliving of those horrible things we have to let them tell their stories we have to hear the narratives without fixing without educating them but simply stay engaged if you're a counselor listening to this I cannot fix her pain I can't say the pain is Ok or it's going to go away but what I can do is I can be present with her I can get her to tell her story I can encourage that she can feel believe then she can go about the business of healing and not go about the business of trying to convince somebody how betrayed she. Was she needs to be heard vary the pattern of abuse you had mentioned earlier I was just scribbling down in my notes here a trigger incident happens things escalate between the 2 of them the abuse occurs this violent act or whatever there's obviously remorse some sorry baby I promise you I'll never do it again and then maybe things are Ok for a little while and then a trigger happens and it goes on again people often in the midst of this wonder what's wrong with her why doesn't she pack up and get her tail out of there all there's a ton of reasons I being in San Diego I work a lot with military law enforcement I have policemen that are in my betters groups I've had a judge in my batteries group I've had a number of military in my betters group officers a list admin and they're all facing the same thing how do I control my rage my anger when it's building up inside of me and I'm so stressed I can't stand straight and she comes along and the kids are screaming she's not I want her to make a home for me where I can come all me and recoup and be safe myself and that's not occurring and I don't know any other way of getting her to do what I want her to do except get forceful and maybe make a threat. Yes it occurs and occurs to good people and we don't want it to happen to good people but the law is very strict these people will go to jail and here's the sad thing in the military or law enforcement they lose their weapons and that's how they make their livelihood question if my husband's a police officer are the other police officers going to believe me number 2 well that we lose our livelihood if i Report military will my husband who brings home the bacon and I live a Navy housing if he goes to jail is that going to end his career is he up for a promotion that I've just squandered that promotion for my husband and they do love their mates oftentimes but if it's a reoccurring thing and they need to go. The relationship there are programs all over the United States if you want to if you're battered you might have to go to 32 different agencies before you get all the help you need you could be talking to law enforcement district attorney there's 2 agencies right there social workers protection how do I take care of my kids I want to talk about all those in just a moment because you're right this is serious there's so much to do here to unpack and it's critical but let me go back to why she states I just wrote down listening to you loved she just wants to be loved maybe money what am I going to do I don't have the money on a place to go how about fear I'm terrified man he's going to kill me might do some serious if he's willing to choke me and he threatens me he'll do that to me he could track me down stalking you everywhere it's stalking you on line on your phone on everything it's ripping doors off the wall and that's terrifying the kids could be a reason they could be broken relationship stuff she just has broken does my husband have a right to his children am I going to take those kids away from him and so as a result if you're in a position to help you've got to understand these driving forces that are keeping her locked into a potentially threatening situation not only just her and her kids and it's complicated it's extremely complicated when I train a therapist to work with batteries and I train therapist to work with victims this is a 50 year 48 hour course work I certify them they've taken the course work and then they've got to go for a year a 1000 hours under supervision under another person's license and order to receive cases from the courts in the last Pacific for example a domestic violence counselor cannot see both a victim and the abuser in the same session. It's against the law because we have a tendency to take sides and it used to be that in the seventy's the man was sent packing you know just go somewhere else and and you guys learn to get along I want to come back here but sense things like o.j. Simpson the women's movement has really sparked a novel called a revival but certainly the importance of being able to help victims and to address the needs of matters and it. This is the public square we come to you from the American Policy Roundtable and when shopper were Dave's an ati we're talking about climate change this week Dave with all due respect I know you spent a lot of time looking at this issue but you're not a Ph d. I'm not a p.h.d. Do you have to have a Ph d. To really understand this stuff are they have to have a Ph d. In science and if you have a Ph d. In science do you have an in climate and those where is well right yeah and no matter where you stand on this issue whether you believe in climate change and global warming and that it's manmade or you completely deny any of that the fact the matter is both sides on this discussion have arguments with one another and a lot of them will say well you're a meteorologist but you're not a climatologist than a ph d. So you don't count so when there's a lot of on settled debate in acted academia and among supposedly and spoused and even awarded experts the question is can civilians. Can the rest of us get our arms around the sun understand what's really going on the 1st thing is I'll tell you that it's not just math science biology and chemistry homework it's not the stuff you tried to duck in high school this stuff is interesting it's fascinating and it has a biblical connection a concept of stewardship of the planet and when you spend enough time studying it it actually begins to sort of fall into line where at least you can understand what each side is arguing about and why there is so much imminence and so much passion in it all let me just start by simply saying the big question is is the planet getting warmer and are humans responsible for that problem is it a problem and are we responsible that's what we're talking about this week and we'll talk more about tomorrow we need more time don't we will continue this conversation in the public square here and online at the public square dot com. We must choose to pursue wisdom it's not to each of us to determine how we will walk through this life wisdom is not something a person stumbles into or acquires automatically it must be sought out in pursuit the person who walks in wisdom is very aware of his life affects the world and how the world affects him he recognizes that every person faces 3 enemy life the world system the flash and the battle he seeks to know God's plan and purpose not only for his personal life but also for every situation involving other people around him Do not be unwise but understand with the will of the Lord as if he's inside 17 is taken from God's Way to day to day by Charles Stanley. In every book in every chapter all throughout the Bible the great evidence is this is a book full of promises just think about it is not very thick There's 8000 promises in this book 8000 made to you and to me. I know some of the promises were made in Israel when I was growing up we had a little course we used to sing in my son's who class went like this every promise in the book is mine every chapter every verse every lie then I heard a Bible teacher say that's not true because some of the promises are to his rule don't sing that song anymore so I don't sing the song anymore but But what I'm telling you is get rid of all of the little stuff that people want to say about it and get down to the basic truth if you want to hear God's Word to your heart if you want to hear what God has in store for you if you want to know what God has promised to you only one place to get it it's in between the covers of this book called The Bible thank you so one of the reasons why you want to get involved in promises of God because there are so many of them you spend the rest of your life and you'll never get them all but it's a good project I recommend it to you here's a 2nd reason why these promises are so important not only are the incalculable but they're infallible God's promises are great because they always are true here's what the Bible says about God's promises in 2nd Corinthians 120 the Bible says for every one of God's promises is yes in Christ therefore through him we also say amen to the glory of God That's a tremendous word in other words God you have promised to never leave us or forsake us and to work all things for our good and God says yes and we say Amen you guys are to good to. Have your promise to hear an answer our prayers Lord to watch over us and Deliver Us From Evil to give peace and strength to us and God says yes and we say. Have you promised us an eternal home in heaven where our sin and sickness and sorrow can never intrude into our lives and God says yes and we say Ok. I got to tell you if you're a Baptist preacher you have to really work hard to get people to say man and thank you for doing that. That equation works for all of God's promises no matter how many promises God has made they are all yes in Christ and through us they are a man. Bible teaches that God keeps every promise he has ever made he never out promises him self He's never not fully kept his promise he keeps them fully totally in detail and for ever His Word cannot be broken and that's why his promises are described as exceedingly great and precious so we love his promises because there are so many of them we love his promises because he never breaks them and we love his promises 30 because they're always available to us. There's a little word that Peter loves to use and he writes it in his book more than any other writer I think it's the word precious he's using it 8 times in the 2 letters that have his name attached to them he describes God's promises here as precious and when he uses that word he means not in a sentimental way. He means think precious stones think precious metals think gold. Just think about gold for a minute that's a precious metal it's precious because God made it got buried in the earth and He loves it so much that one day is going to pave the streets of New Jerusalem with it. And experts say that gold has special chemical properties 1st of all I mean so it was more industrial in its usage copper is more useful in electrical conductivity But gold has a special chemical composition and I tell you about I learned this in studying this is last year. Gold cannot be destroyed by water cannot be destroyed by time cannot be destroyed by fire it's malleable which means it spreads without cracking its duck tile means it stretches without breaking it's rare you know how rare gold is I was shocked when I read this but listen to me all the gold that's ever been mined in the whole world would fit into 2 Olympic swimming pools. Now that's a lot of gold. But in light of the vastness of the universe it doesn't seem like that much does it one of the reasons gold is so precious is because there's not a lot of it there's not a huge amount of gold and so we call it a precious metal and what Peter is talking about here in 2nd Peter One is that each and every promise God issues you in His word is as precious as gold so valuable that just one of those promises can make you infinitely richer than somebody who owns all the gold in both of those swimming pools I believe that I believe that if you get a hold of the right promise in the right situation it will change everything about you everything about your life. And ladies and gentlemen we don't have to go hunting for these promises we have them in our Yes the precious promises of God we take with us to church every week we lay the book of those promises down on the nightstand before we go to bed and we read it in the morning sometimes you read it at night and as you read this book you understand and recognize the life changing gifts that God has given you and when you understand these things you cannot believe you have them there here and this is what Peter wants us to understand we don't have to wait for these we don't have to do anything to get them we don't have to sign up for them there's no class where we have to go and learn about Him The Bible says God has given you everything you need through his grave. Precious promises. There's a lot of places on the West Coast where. Visitors like to go one of them is the Hearst Castle William Randolph Hearst was a wealthy 20th century newspaper publisher and he was an incredible art collector. One day he read a description of some Bible pieces of art and he called his people together and he said I have to have that art immediately go find it I don't care what it costs he commission is agent to go wherever he had to go and get those pieces of art so he could have them for his collection you can imagine his surprise when he received a telegram from his art agent telling him the pieces were in his own warehouse where his collection of ours was stored. So if William hearse had compared the valuable items he wanted with the precious items he already possessed he would have discovered that the very things he longed for he already had. And that's what I want to convey to you today most of all ladies and gentlemen we don't have to go looking for it isn't it interesting that we have this and God has given it to us it's his precious book. And stead of going to the precious book where we have promises from God that if we do this he will connect us to his power we run around as seminars we read all kinds of and celery books all of which there's nothing wrong with it but if we do that to the exclusion of reading were the real goal of is we're just messing with our own lives and then we look up one day and we wonder why it isn't work and it's not going to work unless you follow God's plan so let me encourage you to remember you have God's power and you have God's promises and these promises are incredible one last thing before we get to a couple of practical admonitions you have God's power it's been given to you by Almighty God who is himself power you have God's precious promises God's given him to you in his book those promises are like the electric wires that connect you with the generator of God's almighty power if you want the power of God you got to be in this book there's no such thing as being a powerful Christian without being in this book this is the secret to all of that but number 3 you have God's purpose what is God doing in your life why is he doing all of this why does God provide you with his divine power through his promises because he wants to do something in your life he has a purpose in mind for you listen to what Peter says and 2nd Peter 13 and 4 his divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness that through these things we might be partakers of his divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust Now those are some words statements let me unpack them. For 1st of all God's purpose for you is that you get his nature This doesn't mean you could become a little god some people teach that it's not true none of us are ever going to become God There's only one God but the Bible says that when we become Christians God imparts his nature to us he doesn't take away the old nature how many of you know that. He doesn't eradicate what we used to be because if that were true after we became Christians we'd never sin we just be perfect I have a little poem I share where I go it goes like this 2 natures beat within my breast the one is foul the one is blessed the one I love the one I hate the one I feed will dominate so if you don't feed your new nature your old nature will still dominate you even if you're a believer but listen me before you became a believer you didn't have an option you didn't have God's nature now the bible says through these promises the nature of God that's within you that's growing in you in opposition to your old nature that new nature is being fed howzit fed through the promises of God You connect the word of God with the nature of God within you in the Bible says when you do that number one you become more godly and number 2 he promises that if you do that you will a skate the corruption that is in the world through lust Now let's just pause for a moment and ask ourselves what in the world does that mean the world in which we live men and women is no longer a world capable of communicating positive things to our lives is not you may have a positive family you may have a little positive group but the world as we know it especially here in the United States is no longer a world that values virtue that values goodness the Bible says that would come a time when we would call evil good and good evil were at that time and all you got to do is watch I mean it's just so evident So here we are as believers we're connected to the power source we've been given the promises and the Bible says that you and I is be leavers We've been called to live righteous lives in the midst of that culture we can't be absorbed into this culture we have to be different how do we do that you have to do it through the power of God Well how do you get the power of God through His great and precious promises that are downloaded into your heart . The power of God in the promises of God What happens is you become more like Jesus and less like the world. Have you heard that married couples who lived together long enough to start to look alike I always pray for my wife that that's not true but. Scientists tell us that emotional interactions within a marriage like the diet you eat the environment that you enjoy your hobbies how you exercise all of that creates similar complection. Partners tend to imitate each other's habits in body languages. So if anybody comes up and tells you you and your husband are start to look alike you take that as a great compliment the older that I get the less I ever want to be away from my wife I don't want to go anywhere without her and sometimes I have to do that but I enjoy that not at all I want to be with her and I know she feels the same way that's what happens when you grow together as a couple and you're in love and you want to be to get you want to miss anything you want to miss and we have all these wonderful memories together we have all these great kids or grandkids and it's just a great time in life for us but we do it together. Well that's the same way it is in our relationship with God when we spend time with God When we draw from his power and we live on his promises he fulfills his purpose in us little by little making us more and more like himself and the longer we walk with the Lord and the closer we get to him guess what the more we look alike as an enemy and let me tell you something he's not going to change to look like us and we've got to do all the change and right. The Bible says that when we practice this we are conformed to the image of God's Son Romans 829. Well there you have it God's power. God's promises and God's provision Peter said You have everything you need for life and godliness everything not some things everything now you say Ok pastor I got that how do I download all this stuff so I got a little 5 point conclusion and sounds like a motivational speaker but hopefully this will be motivational Here's my 5 step strategy for analyzing and downloading this here we go number one. Analyze number 2 personalize number 3 memorize number 4 verbalize and number 5 organize ready step one analyze. If you're feeling a little bit powerless in some areas of your life as a Christian take inventory where do you find yourself most lacking power. What do you struggle with what are your most difficult challenges were you frustrated most in your Christian life where you're not doing what you thought you should be doing what's keeping you from enjoying a life of godliness enjoy on your Christian journey all of us no matter who we are Listen to me if we follow the Lord Jesus for burn long we have what the Bible calls some besetting sins. Even the great apostle Paul had his struggles if you ever read this verse he wrote for what I will to do that I don't practice and what I hate that I do for the good that I will do I don't do but the evil I will not do that's what I do Oh Richard man that I am but will deliver me that sounds kind of contemporary doesn't it I could've written that bursts for myself and so could you . So when you're trying to take the promises of God in and make them work in your life the 1st thing you have to ask yourself Is this work in my life do I need a promise from God. Why do I need a scripture to fortify my life sometimes we allow the Word of God to become so general it doesn't have any particular good the Word of God was meant to help us with personal things so 1st thing you do is you analyze where to after you analyze and personalize what does that mean well now that you have your list start finding the promises of God's Word that deal with your challenges build a customized treasure of verses that speak to the issues that you are facing if you've never done anything like this before getting good could accordance. And look up the keywords on your list. You can use or written corns or many of you could use on your computer what does the Bible say about this thing that I'm struggling with get your list of verses that go with your problem many verses you locate won't speak directly to your need but some will write those down keep adding to your list as you accumulate verses and you might only find one or 2 the 1st week but that's 2 more than you have the week before. And remember these precious promises are what convey God's power to you so that you can deal with the issue in your life how do I get God's power and integrated into the thing I'm dealing with it's going to be through a scripture connect your life with the power source remember the book of the Bible with the most promises Isaiah and the chapter with the most promises is some 37 so analyze here's what many is personalize with the Scripture says this will kill you memorize. How many of you know there's a tremendous value and memorize in Scripture. And some of said this your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you I started memorizing the Bible as a child as part of an organization called the Bible memory association all these years later believe it or not all these years later I still remember verses that I memorized when I was a child and that's one of the greatest things you can give to your children and grandchildren is a desire to download God's word into their heart so I could give you hundreds of reasons why bible members a good thing but let me just give you the most important one in light of what we're talking about today the reasons for Bible memorization are simply this. When you member eyes the Bible you make God's word portable. When you memorize the Bible you have the Bible with you wherever you go how many of you know when you get into a tough spot you can say Could you just hold it while I go get my can corns I know there's a verse in the Bible here for that no it doesn't work does it most of the issues we have in life are instantaneous momentary we don't have a long time to go find so you've got to get some stuff in your hard drive you know the Holy Spirit can only use what you have in your hard drive he can't make you aware of something that's not there so as hard as it may be it just just take one simple verse one verse that deals with something you're dealing with memorize that verse call it to memory and when you memorize the verse on your list you can recall that promise any time no matter where you are now here's 4th what I don't ever heard about it talk about this analyze personalize memorize 4th verbalise. If you want to make these promises stick to the ribs of your Spiritual Being find ways to share them with others speak them out loud I mean my wife is help me memorize it I'll read it she says no you missed this verse you know now you've got computers and you can write about there's all kinds of ways to do this but what you need to do once you get a verse share it as often as you can share it with a spouse share it with a close friend find every excuse. If you can say these promises out loud say them all out and address them to your problem here's one thing I've written down in my journal it's one thing to tell God about your problems but sometimes you need to tell your problems about God and when you do that with the Word of God you neutralize the situation so here you go analyze figure out what it is you're dealing with personalize find the right scripture memorize commit some of them to memory number for verbalize tell and everybody because as soon as you start telling the somebody it will be easier for you to remember them and then forget nice when you start doing this you get a list so you organize the list and here's how you do it get yourself a little loose leaf notebook that you can move the pages around whatever problem it is you're working with put this title at the top of the page when you get a verse from your study print the verse out write it out on the page little by little you're not only adding verses but you're adding pages then you can put those pages in alphabetical order and you've built your own little memory bank to help you download the power of God into your own life. And I'm going to tell you something friends I've tried to put this in the easiest way that I know how this is what works this is how it happens there's no mystery to this you don't just wake up one day and you're more godly than you were the day before. This is a process that God has given to us in His word and I recommend it to you if you just remember those 5 things and the important promises of the Word of God you will find incredible things happening in your life my prayer is that as we work through these lessons from this section of scripture it will dawn upon us in the deepest part of our life what God has done for us he not only gave us eternal life so we can spend eternity with Him in heaven he gave us everything we need to live a life on this earth that will bring glory to his name I'm still discovering a lot of this but I hope you'll join me in the discovery process Amen. The Crawford stand this week the president of Crawford Broadcasting Company Dawn Crawford is discussing something people have been speculating about for decades reforming Congress and term limiting them because many stay way too long and garner too much power over we the people like Chuck Schumer for example Democratic senator from New York Schumer has been in office 38 years 38 years can you believe that he is the Democratic the minority leader in the Senate with incredible power and like Patrick levy a Democratic senator from Vermont who has been in power 44 years 44 years can you believe that or like Nancy Pelosi Democrat and Speaker of the house from California who has been in office 32 years elected 16 times Palosi us and almost always without any real opposition or like Maxine Waters Democrat from California who has been in office 28 years 28 years. And all of these 4 and so many others wield incredible political power as a result of these real actions and have made easy transitions from representative to rule or they virtually assume reelection and politically they really do what they want not what we want as a result of that power entrenchment and any number of other examples there now comes a movement impeach Congress and act term limits let me repeat that impeach Congress and act term limits. You know it seems the only real answer term limits. How about perhaps 6 terms for a congressperson total 12 years and 2 terms for a senator total 12 years and done gone out go home back to where you once belong we wouldn't care who you were how smart you were how politically savvy you were what kind of country or world influence you might have go home enough is enough and so now comes the so-called Congressional Reform Act that would deal with this inequity and provide that no such retiring representative would have tenure they would have no tenure and no pension the congressional representative collects compensation when in office and receives nothing when. When he or she goes home the take home pay is the honor and the pride of having served the greatest country in the history of the world and we the people and nothing else tomorrow why do congresspersons not participate in programs they create for We The People like Social Security Bill McCormack. So Paul having noted carefully that Abraham was counted righteous before he was circumcised then draws important realities and truths and principles from that which apply to us and they are very very helpful to us in our faith life with our God and Savior Jesus Christ so listen into this this is Collin Koch and how it happens thank you very much for joining me today you can listen to this program every Monday through Friday 10 o'clock in the evening and repeated at 4 in the morning on k l t t a 670 and you can also hear it any time of the day or night anywhere by Don't be downloading a free app to your remote device either Safari Sound Cloud part being or Spotify and simply key and how it happens with Collin Koch when you arrive there so we're looking at these realities and principles that Paul is seeing in the way God deals with Abraham because Abraham as he points out a bit later is Father of us all so he says for the promise that he would be heir of the world that is Abraham was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law but through the righteousness of faith and that's what we hang to and cling to on a daily basis why. Did the promise come to you and me. Through the law that is because we were obedient and good people did God's promise to us come because somehow we had and in a discipline that other people don't have know God's promise came to us because God loves us and God loves us because He loves us that's what I pointed out to you yesterday and other in other words the basis for our salvation lies in God's love not in our response to him. Now then he says for if those who are of the law heirs faith is made void in the promise made of no effect on.
