And for our opening a block segment today of our program you know we have new stations to welcome we've got travel poll results to share and of course we have travel news to report as well so let's get a ball rolling Mary what we do a black eye like that all right coming up in a few minutes Rick meadows the president of seaborne will join us as we talk wave season gets Now this luxury small ship operator better. If you'd like a glass of wine the next time you stay in a hotel room but you want to avoid the expense of that many bar David carets will be here in Segment 3 with a solution for you will find out what it takes to pilot a good year with William Bayliss and Segment 4 and its destination spotlight number 39 today as Robert and I take you to Key West and on a quick programming note I had an hour or 2 today and 3 of us are going to answer some listener e-mails and rapper and I will share a deals of that week segment as well so be sure to stay tuned for all of you know I've got some good ones there as well. And I want to say right now thanks to everybody in our audience who voted at our Am World Travel dot com Our latest travel polls here's what you said the 1st question I asked is when you choose a no frills airline what irks you the most and here are the results the lack of trance a lack of Christ like I can't speak today we're starting to show a lack of price transparency 36 percent limited backup aircraft 17 percent cramped seating 11 percent baggage fees 3 percent all of the above all 33 percent I don't want so I don't really have something that really early we're going to be able that choice but I'm surprised and back injuries only being 3 percent that really surprised well don't you think that when you're flying a no frills you know what I know you're going to get hit for the baggage and so maybe that's true that's true that's right if I were you I was thinking of generally speaking baggage fees you know you're right I know feels airline you expect to be beaten about and slapped around a little better you know you're not going to settle down feeling exactly right so here's the 2nd question everybody has something on I know but I do on the next one so that's I Well here's the thing what you're going to go 1st on that the hotel fees when you're in a hotel what irks you the most about that here are the results resort fees 49 percent y. Fi fees 25 percent room service surcharges 12 percent local phone calls 10 percent urban fees 5 percent Personally I have to say to both of you and the wife I figure if you just joined their loyalty programs right times they waive it anyway so that could be that 20 percent could go away. But I don't know Mary what your well the local phone calls I mean we all use our sauce it's the resort face hands down because I feel like I don't mind paying a resort fee if I'm actually stayed at a good sized resort someplace but I don't like paying those fees for hotels and we got stuck with that last year at a hotel in Florida it's happened in New York where and they rarely cover parking. They cover when they cover local politics and there's nothing in what I say that will tell them it's all my heart and nothing against all my heart that we are affiliates and I'm not saying but if I'm at all my heart at a Marriott or Hilton or Sheraton don't hit me with a resort now there's nothing you're providing to Maruti we're talking about urban fees if you sicko right so that. It's like Ok if you really say tax the Panthers somewhere yeah. He's just build it is not built into the Bronx you paying for that in your room for you know the high price of real estate in New York or downtown wherever they are they're all just interacts at rate hikes Well the majority of the guests freeze my guess we just just raise the rates when this is what is going to exactly get a lot of new travel Poles are going to be up on Monday on our website at our Am World Travel dot com So please go check them out we have some time and be of more of the show and I just add this we know why they do this is so when they show their room price it looks competitive with their competitors right and if you click through you maybe eventually learn about your editors are good but you talk about price transparency frequently can't see that but you're right you can't see the resort and I would agree that's picked almost 50 percent so so now we have some new affiliates we have to welcome and you know we're inching ever closer to 400 weekly stations I we're going to surpass that sometime this year I don't know whether at $386.00 whatever the number is or something right now so Mary I want to start us off shore exciting are right hello t w e b j News Talk am 1240 in Britain Alabama bats that mobility I may or media market number 58 and a big arm world travel welcome to News Talk w w n r That's 6 20 am and one o 1 point one f.m. In Beckley West Virginia media market number 163 there are in us live every Saturday at this time and I will spot my heart for Beckley because when I went to. Knowledge of my university which is on the West Virginia border I was editor of the college paper for 6 days a week and many nights I'd go down to Beckley were our printing plant was and have to stay up till 5 in the morning sort of making sure everything was right so that's when I mean join together forever because I'm sorry feels right there to just been some time there as well and now you know I get there at 1 in the morning so. What an opening waits for down one of the 12 that I'm going to offer thanks to an extent a warm welcome to am 1420 and f.m. One I was 6 point one w k w and that's in Trenton Tennessee it's the Chattanooga d.m.a. Or media market 83 so thanks to all these new affiliates we appreciate all of them and all of our affiliates across the network for being a part of our show each week and helping Mary really have me do what we do so already on that note what's grab your attention in the travel world well I guess it was a good idea when the marketing folks and Delta Airlines and Coca-Cola hit on a design for a new cocktail napkins you know both companies are joined at the hip they're both headquartered in Atlanta you won't find any Pepsi on Delta flights anyway in December they put new cocktail napkins on the planes and they had what I think Delta and coke thought would be a playful message quote be a little school said the small print on the napkin advertising diet coke right down your number and give it to your plane crush you never know about it and it's be a little old school but a little bit will be a little old school so they're trying to take it back so I just want you to use me a little old school exactly then they said well then they put a place on the napkin where flirtatious passengers would write their name and contact information and the larger princess because you're on a plane full of interesting people and hey again you never know and the reaction from passengers was very swift they thought it was creating what do you think of that if you fly Delta all the gas and I felt all the time you know it's I just think if you want to meet somebody you know do it at all way introduce yourself and if you get we have a nice talk maybe exchange phone numbers or you mails if you want but right now this is sort of you know people are married on that I mean you know I think it warrants it all the backlash that it got though I mean I don't know how they would have stopped it I mean Delta and Coke did assume the grovelling position quickly to said we missed the market. This one or sorry that I think a lot of it was December it took to late the January almost over to February but you know I would just say somebody in the marketing department all I'm going to say on that when they're all sitting around I don't know whether it was a group of all men that said this is a great idea or they've basically said you know they're just having fun stamping or whatever it's a napkin who cares let's just move I don't know something you think it's a huge world somebody's really they thought it was going to take off and now it's going to head butt swinging the mess I write in on this day in travel history February 1969 that Boeing 747 made its maiden flight and although it is no longer serving passengers here in the u.s. It is finding its new life as a cargo jet plane yes before the meadows checks in with a showcase segment keep it right here we'll be right back after this break. World Traveler thanks for tuning in everyone here and I appreciate knowing you're out there listening to today's broadcast as we get ready for a few blocks of a segment before Rick meadows the president of seaborne makes his debut in America's number one for all the radio show a quick word that this portion of the program is sponsored by lifelike dot com that now includes more security the world is full of sounds that warn you about danger like foghorns for boaters or if you get a little too close to that rattlesnake you're going to hear that rattle sound but in the digital world if your personal information is in danger there's no rattling or sound to let you know there is trouble and that's why life luck identity theft protection has end of the power of Norton security for comprehensive protection against threats you can't easily see or fix on your own and if you ever have a problem they have agents who will work to fix it join now for the 1st year and save 10 percent when you use our code of our Emmett life like dot com There's also like our own World Travel dot com under spotters we are currently in wave season which means if you're considering an ocean cruise you're going to find some terrific offers for travel this year and into next year as well you hear us talk about the brands of the world's leading cruise lines on the program frequently they're all part of Carnival Corporation they include seaborne Princess Holland America canard Carnival and others Rick Meadows is the president of seaborne and we invited him to join us today because it is way of season and over his nearly 35 year career with Carnival Corporation he's been hands on in the operations of not only seaborne but canard Holland America and Carnival as well let's get right to records holding on the show hotline for us Rick we're looking forward to this conversation all weeks nice to connect with you thanks for joining marry me today it's great to be here thank you well we appreciate that and I want to maximize our times we're going get right into things as well. We mentioned you know you've been with seaborne parent company Carnival Corporation since 95 So you've been actively involved in the tremendous growth that ocean cruising has experienced I saw something this week that said they're expecting 30000000 people in 29 teams from C.L.I.'s talked with us about the evolution and growth of seaborne and I'd like to know some of the new things that you're now offering passengers this is certainly well I think that the cruise industry is such a exciting and dynamic industry and I been very fortunate to be a part of it for the per my book of my career so many things that make the industry different and I think what it really comes down to is that the value that you receive versus the experiences that you receive are just they're just unmatched and I think what's what's exciting about our segment of the industry the travel industry in general you are right 30000000 people are expected to cruise and 2019 but if you put that in context to like there's others to watch they get there's 42000000 people there's a lot of I guess in 2018 so we have a lot of opportunity for growth and so we're looking forward to having our you got to rejoin us and of course finding new new cruisers while we're happy I think with all the recent growth it's certainly a wonderful time to be encouraging and of course to cruise and something that for our listeners sake right now that I want to point out of that we appreciate is hearing all sweet ships you offer really intimate more personalized experiences I say with 400 to roughly 600 passengers depending on the particular ship but you also I'd love for you to talk about the unique watersports marina in addition to all of the onboard dining options one should talk a little bit about some of the unique aspects and amenities on your steps certainly I think you know you've mentioned experience that we're all about finding experiences that are really authentic with our guests and one of the I think the more exciting experiences we provide is on quite a number of our our sailing and it's a program called ventures. By seaborne and that is a opportunity where guests and in a number of ports around the world have the opportunity to do an optional shore experience directly from the ship where they will disembark the ship and perhaps do it though the act 2 or or a kayaking trip or a. Potential even on land where they're on a guided hike and these are all really put together by some of the most experienced expedition individuals that you'll ever find out there within the travel industry they could be a an ornithologist to Clichy ologist or someone who is just so expert on the destination that they can take you up close and personal. You know certainly in other ports of call where we're in the Caribbean we may leverage you mentioned our arena which is a water sports platform that comes up that back about full where we will do water sports activities for our guests during the day and maybe even a couple of a couple of ports in the Caribbean we'll bring those toys ashore to an island or a beach and do something really fun we call caviar in the surf that is very very popular I like that yeah I think that's good Marina doesn't have a unique component you know I'll say this you know folks that listen to our show they know I'm a waterways they are a river cruise partner obviously Carnival Corporation and all the brands including yours would be our ocean cruise partner but I often joke when we have their owners on about every time I turn around the always winning an award here or there but seaboard is also a top winner wreck I saw it 2018 alone that the cruise line won more than $35.00 various travel awards and I was going to throw out a few because they're so varied but you know this small ship cruise line like condé Nast Traveller is Readers Choice you've got Cruise Critic says best luxury cruise line best service best for solo travelers there's a lot of the Travel Weekly Magellan gold and silver and then even u.s. News and World Report best cruise line for couples best cruise line in the Mediterranean or Caribbean or. You know luxury cruise line so you've got a lot out there what do you think is the secret all the women you know I think at the end of the day what it comes down to is is really that highly personalized and I think probably the word is bespoke service we take the time to get to know our guests very well and that really create an experience for that individual and whether it's something that's quite small like remembering what kind of beverage that you might enjoy in a bar or how you'd like your sweet arranged to you know something maybe a little a little larger something that we call a seaborne moment that we can create for you that's that's that's very special maybe celebrating a birthday or an anniversary of the like but it's that service that really I think helps too to differentiate that and you'll find that throughout the entire experience whether you were dining in one of our incredible restaurants on board or whether your interacting with your sweet stewardess or in the seaborne square service really is something that that sets us apart Rick for somebody who's listening who's never cursed with before and you offer travel to 474 I it's roughly 170 UNESCO sites that's a lot all 7 continents and 90 countries or so is there a particular part of the world that you'd recommend initially experiencing was he born. You know great great great question I think it it really depends on what you are interested as an individual and visiting or where you're visiting the summer months for us most of our ships are in Europe which is a beautiful place to begin your your cruise history with with sea borne whether it's the western or the eastern Mediterranean or perhaps even the Baltic up into Northern Europe. Alaska is a beautiful place to take that 1st seaborne experience it was acknowledged you have to get out there is with a big ship just can't go we do and you know we're we really take the time to. Think about planning are our ports of call words and a great mix of those smaller hidden gems as well as the more well known destinations so that we can we can give people that that again opic experience that . Built it to have a larger ship just because we can go to some of the smaller places that the bigger ships just can't get into them you know and I also I saw something that you have your 1st world cruise I think coming in about 5 or 6 years beginning this January I think we reported not only know it reported on it back in the show a few months ago 146 day adventure to some terrific locations really curious for you what made you bring back the world cruise India expect most people to take the full journey or you think you're going to do a segment on Well it's interesting there we listen to our guests very very closely and we had just a significant number of our guests that have just said hey we really want you to do a world cruise again on an average sea borne Cruise 50 percent of our guests have failed us before so that is kind of a demonstration of the kind of loyalty and passion you will have a more and so that's another answer that Ok I got it and so they told us quite quite strongly hey we want to we want to work crews to come back and so we listened and we built something that we think is quite special and it will be a mix of gas to take the the full world voyage as well as to those guys to take some of the longer longer segments but it's going to be an absolute once in a lifetime experience that's for sure well if somebody is listening right now I can tell you you know 146 day cruise depending on what cabin and where you are when you go from an ocean view all the way up to a penthouse it's going to be somewhere between about 67146000 folks but if you break that down between $460.00 a day $2000.00 which is to go see the world in all those places not too bad. You know we want to also get into I know you revamped the evening entertainment on the seaborne Odyssey and I really was just curious real quick Well you know we're going to hold that question I would love to ask it to you but we're going to hold that cause I'm looking at our clock so. Next time we're going to ask you how hard it is to find some on board talent but Rick we really appreciate your time today please don't be a stranger you're always welcome here and we do hope you enjoy the weekend Ok thank you so much about The Great to be with all the Robert merry Take care Rick thank you all right there goes Rick passionate guy clearly for seaborne and folks check out seaborne dot com actually a good deal of the week too I'm going to use coming up in the show so tune into that a little bit later an hour to right now we're going to pause take a quick break please connect with us on Twitter Linked In Instagram and Facebook are a little trouble and if you want to hear something else on the show again we don't have all of the hours of our national broadcast on the website of our trouble or in fact if this bombing will break the trip. Of Plum a company that makes a small device those finding favor with hotels his device called a plum dispenses wine one glass at a time David welcome the show I presume that means as a hotel guests I only get charged for one glass at a time right exactly and actually even better because the idea was to not have to pay need markups you know I don't I don't care how much money you have nobody expense Excel or circuit yet and so the idea is practical after a while at the same price of the bar downstairs really well that there is a huge step forward for mankind right there not playing not paying many of our prices you have a choice of wines like a red white or is it just $11.00 wine that comes out out of the plum you know the choice of red and white and there's a 7 inch touchscreen I'll actually teach you about that one so that you know you're drinking a great glass of wine every time who chooses what wine to put in there. It's a great question and so most of the time our hotel partners actually sure a line collection seasonally so that when it's a really hot day and you're in southern Florida you know how to great rosé or Sauvignon Blanc but in the winter in New York you'll be a deep red so the idea is to actually let the season guide the choice so it's nice I like that that is very very cool now I understand from reading about your company that you an issue you started this company and you thought you would do most of your marketing to people in homes who didn't want to open a bottle of wine at the time but it $2000.00 a device you found hotels are a little more receptive let me ask you is is there you know there is a there are devices that will let you extract one glass out of a bottle through a cork with a needle and then it put gas in inert gas in there to keep the wind fresh does that happen with your machine will actually we have a big consumer business there is our consumer business more than doubled last year so Hotel and consumer we think are very synergistic right Ok So think of an espresso the 1st time most will try to stress so as an office or hotel room realized there was a better experience and ended up buying one for their home and we think the same thing is true here so we've had thousands and thousands of folks at the purchased ones that are home and we saw places like Williams Sonoma and so the idea is we use a motorized needle so the problem with previous solutions is they actually time typically didn't work because once you pull the cork out of the bottle now bottle oxidized right away run so what we do is we actually use a motorized needle that goes way through that cork so that you never take the cork off in the 1st place so we can preserve a bottle of wine for 90 days and it's perfect Ok And how long have you been putting in hotels now. So we started our 1st hotel with the 4 Seasons property about a year ago and we now are in dozens of hotels. And is it up to each individual teller's 4 Seasons putting him everywhere I guess it's each individual hotel which we can quickly do at the hotel level over time will sleep we actually are in talks with the brands to start putting it across all of their properties but usually you have to prove yourself at a hotel and then you go to the broader brand portfolio and you sell them the machine not the wine right we sell them the machine and we let down to the wine Ok and then I presume you service if and as needed basis exactly what I you know I presume you to tell me you're getting great feedback to be honest with the other been any problems. I think there's always problems in a start up right it would it would be unrealistic if there wasn't more concerned there nothing that went on but the experience and we just actually had a post from. Any Frankel who's made her fortune doing Skinny Girl Margarita she experienced that at hotel that had plum and Jalen lot and we get that same experience in the seat across Instagram and social media that people walk into a hotel room and there's it's delight to have wine and at that you know on tap and part of the magic of it is that you can now hit a button and walk outside and watch the sunset you can now hit a bottom and have a glass of wine to relax and you're an hour of work to do so the little magic is about capturing experiences highlight that particular is another coffee drinker and all these are and there's coffee and tea but. What are you finding in the few seconds you have what are you finding in the general price per glass that hotels are charging I presume they set the price right they do and generally we we try to make sure that those prices are consistent that at the bar in some cases it'll be in the $1015.00 range and then we actually have suites that have been performing credibly well offering super luxury wine at 3040 dollars or $50.00 or even a glass Well they're learning is people would actually rather pay. Well you know find a blimp set I tell people it's kind of a combination of fine airplane or helicopter and a boat I'm great. That takes about a year to train a pilot to get Can Captain qualified you really need about 2 to 300 hours in the seat before Corey sign up. Fly it and and do you are have to be a commercial pilot of some different of a different aircraft before you can fly a blimp Yes that's correct you have to be a commercial pilot a minimum of airplane or helicopter a lot of us myself included have an Airline Transport Pilot license the same thing that enables you to fly you know the heavy transport aircraft whether it be passengers or cargo cargo and what are the particular challenges of flying a blimp. You know it's very weather sensitive so you know you have to be really safety minded with weather and how wind affects the flight of such a large aircraft you know the things that new model the Goodyear blimp the end TCAs or new technology and the things longer than 747 s. Longer than an Airbus a 380 but it still helium very slow moving but it's very maneuverable. Very instinctive type of flying now that I only saw it if I was here can test. This helium thing when the point when the blimp is not in use is it is even out of engine is it sort of deflated or is it always kept inflated it's always kept inflated except for 12 year being a semi rigid airship with some internal structure running from nose to tail we actually take all the helium out once a year while it's in a hangar and we say that helium we have these specially designed nurse bags each one is about the size of a started $34.00 foot story building and we save the helium so we can put it back and it helium is not cheap so we definitely don't like to lose it how often you have to top up the helium. It depends on whether and and all and a few different things but I'd say 2 or 3 weeks will add you know anywhere from 60 to 120 cubic metres I think holds maximum about 8500 cubic meters which. Are 1000 cubic feet and just under 2000000 birthday balloons. First I like that to be a birthday believe how many passengers. Going to blimp carry a maximum of 10 plus 2 pilots but we always say it's again kind of going back to the weather sensitivity it's you know it's defensive it's a cloudy day I knocked out as much sun on the on the helium to what we call superheat the helium provide more lift so we usually shoot for about 7 passengers plus 2 pilots for our charity rides and some of our corporate customers and stuff like that and you shot NASCAR's Daytona 500 a lot of college football playoff national champion Super Bowl Week activities Academy Award red carpet arrivals and now I understand your personal favorite was the Tiger Woods versus Phil Mickelson match in Las Vegas what what how does how do you get it to go up and down and I understand how planes go up and down but do you let pass out or you know what do you do. In short we we kind of use both principle of the air static and aerodynamics so to get off the ground we're going to use engine thrust it's a blunt is slightly heavier than air and a bunch lighter than air basically as soon as we come off the mast we will float away that sets all kind of static binding once we're up in the air or vectoring and in this down and it's basically flying similar to an airplane but the control surfaces on the back of the month and how do you come down with the engine again yeah we have a fully reversible thrusters colors. On actually all 4 propellers 3 engines and they vector the forward engine sector from the radio under 20 degrees so we can land and take off vertically just like a helicopter we have that and you know on the tail it kind of acts as a stern thruster like a boat so we can correct for and these are all fuel powered I was under the led light airplane helicopter Well there you have it there you have a bill Bayliss is the chief pilot for the Goodyear blimp we put to based in Los Angeles or near Los Angeles thanks so much for joining us Bill thanks for having me on such a down more travel coming to. For anyone who's been the Key West you can't help but think of the fun the active nightlife the restaurants and shops right there on Duvall Street it's really not a place for kids but would you agree that it is the place you know to be when you're visiting Key West Well I mean the Key West of course is the southernmost 30 in the continental United States but I probably would disagree with you in terms of it not being appropriate for kids because there were. We are a lot of activities that are that are geared for families and I mean there's just so much history down there Key West is a is a 2nd oldest city in the state of Florida it's been through tough times it's been through great times obviously Key West is likely best known because it was home for 10 years to you know one of America's greatest authors Ernest Hemingway well respected and raise a little known Actually that is my face we've been to Key West in on the family aspect I mean 100 percent agree that's a great museum but there's also the butterfly and I meet your conservatory and those iconic sunsets at Mallory Square Absolutely and you've got to start going another watersports and by the way you mentioned that he was Butterfly Conservatory nature center it's absolutely fabulous I've been there several times the folks there George Fernandes and Sam chopper you just do a great job and by the way they have 2 flamingos where they do and the interesting thing is that they were they were actually bred in Toronto just outside of Toronto and then they came down to Key West for their for their forever home there can their names are read and Garlett by the way and they're only in the afternoon they have an activity called the Flamingo mingle and so about a half a dozen of their go their guests sit in the gives the bill and the Flamingos come out to say Hello in there and then they're running through guests hair and stuff and it's really cool ourself going to push you on this one little bit then you know I know you can fly into Key West but you know I think driving down the Florida Keys over the overseas highway on us wants to get there it really is totally the way to go because if you can stop off and enjoy with this marathon or Key Largo what some of the other keys as well you know taking the entire areas into so do you agree with me on that and a Absolutely and so each area has its own distinct features Key Largo is being billed as the die. Capital of the world Oliver out of the sport fishing capital world you know more world thought water records have been established in the Florida Keys than any other destination on globe Verizon the of your ultimate family vacation center and big pine the lower Keys fabulous predate your but you know the best thing about that drive down is you've got the Atlantic Ocean on your left side the Florida Bay or Gulf of Mexico on your right so literally it's like cruising with your car it's a great triad and a long drive it's a beautiful drive and see in terms of Key Largo another spot that we like in the Keys and I know that there's a new resort just off and I think it's as if the fungal goes for Sorious all inclusive exactly it is the forties 1st all inclusive resort it is called bungalows Key Largo it is absolutely stunning and it's couples only though I don't think it is couples only Yeah yeah yeah yes yes but and we have bakers k. That's just opening up here in a couple weeks a number of new properties have opened up in the Florida Keys Marathon a a 999 unit resort called East love Bella that's really opening up at the end of March or early April so a lot of new product in the Florida Keys by the way you can find more details on the case at f l a t dot com Well your thank you you beat us to that we would have been at the end of an interview and I also want to tell folks a little the Waldo for story that got to adjacent properties in Key West 3rd grade as well real quick we're going to 30 seconds left with you before we let you go give us a quick fact that you think would likely surprise our audience listening right now here in Key West or the keys themselves that will make people want to come as well I mean I did I just think it's such a diversified destination whether you like fishing or diving start going or or or just if you're history but you know what to me the biggest attraction of the Florida Keys is a very laid back and slow take it you know. I know I might you know I type I make it clear very nicely that I am relaxed and I get right to my Wackness thank you very much for your time today folks and as Andy just told you f l a hyphen key is dot com That's f l a hyphen keys dot com will get you into the website dedicated to Andy thank you so much you're welcome our folks there goes in to get a reminder you can find all the places that we're covering on the home page of our website under distillation spotlight so we hope you'll do that if you go somewhere and let us know how your experience was let's go do it for one of the program this week we still have a whole nother hour straight ahead can after these messages marry routine I'll be back talking everything in anything in the trouble of.
