She's smart savvy and a serial entrepreneur that would never lead you astray now here's America's money ace of the airways pictorial McVeigh Good evening everybody if you are new to the show we are here every Sunday night on 960 the Patriot My name is Victoria McVeigh and I'm teaching you how to spend properly other people will teach you how to save and although that's important you don't need to learn how to spend wisely if you don't you know if you do not learn how to spend wisely your money won't go that far I've taken the minutiae out of creating margin in your home and life my new book coming out this summer is called the household hustlers handbook I love finding deals and sharing them with you part of living well for many people is spending money on travel and I love to travel I just got back from Canada with my family it was a fantastic trip I'm going to tell you all about it and you'll see pictures throughout my trip on both Victoria McVey dot com and my Facebook site Victoria McVeigh So there are things you can do that you can that don't cost much but really provide quite the bang for your buck and in Canada today I'm going to take you through all of those kinds of things and what a fabulous trip I had based on you know living this kind of lifestyle so we're going to 1st start out with a a little tribute to Canada. Ok so I visited western Canada and you can really get a lot of your money a lot for your money there and especially if you do a lot of outdoor activities the exchange rate is currently 1.31 which is essentially the American dollar which essentially means that you need a 30 percent discount on goods and services because $130.00 looneys is the equivalent of $100.00 American dollars so looneys that was a little bit of a shock for me that's their currency. I thought that was funny Ok so after arriving you need transportation I decided I would look around this was my strategy in getting a car because there was a large group me my dad my brothers and a couple of my dad's old old buddies so we were all in a hiking trip we had 2 cars I supplied one of them what I did was I called around and saw the top rental car companies in Canada and I looked at which one could give me the best deal straight off so in my case that was Avis and then what I did was I looked to see which ones had affiliate relationships with the credit card companies that I already use and in my case I used to credit cards I have American Express and Citibank and they actually had a better relationship with Citibank and I was able to get a huge discount on my car and I got upgraded to an s.u.v. When I got there and so instead of paying $3.00 to $400.00 for a week for my car it was $250.00 now I did get a speeding ticket on the side note unfortunately I just got. That notice so that added a little bit more so you gotta watch out for those those speed signs they're not quite as obvious as in our country side note Ok so that's how I got a better deal on the rental car and let me tell you the upgrade to the s.u.v. Was worth it due to the fact that a lot of the hiking trips that we took were off road and although they were not climbing boulders off road the car was a dark slate grey when I returned it it was a shade of white. So that gives you an idea we did quite a bit of off road driving Ok so let's go to what we did while we were there when I went on my trip with my dad and my brothers and I sort of cadged this invitation as of 2 years ago this is primarily my father's trip with his older friends they're all in their sixty's and I'm in my forty's so basically I enter I have intervened into their trip and we this year went to Canada and we started out the trip at Lake Louise everybody flew into Calgary and we stayed in Canmore which I'll get into and in order Canmore is right next to Bam which I'm going to talk about as well and basically what happened was in order to get to Lake Louise you have to go in through Bam So I'll talk about the details of band but let me get into the hike at Lake Louise 1st because it was so cool Now this was probably the most traveled hike that we did and I think primarily because you can take a bus. To Lake Louise it's just the hikes around Lake Louise are what's really interesting so in the winter months people love to go there for Alpine cross-country skiing and regular skiing so there's also snowboarding there and I spacing skating dogsledding which I intend to eventually do and I see. Climbing which sounds really cool too all right so but in the summer the area that attracts most of the visitors are the hiking trails and the the waters and rock faces the beautiful scenery is that turquoise lake it's unbelievable looks like the Caribbean and so it's just a few miles from the town of vamp It's about 35 miles and the Fairmount Grand Hotel at the chateau to Lake Louise I see chateau correctly is that chateau or should 2 Ok sits at the brim of the lake and while it's fabulous I was set and ready to hike with my little you know camel pack and things I didn't feel like I was really well dressed to head into the chateau and those of you you know who are going to hike you might want to take a separate day and maybe have lunch there and sit by the lake and take pictures and go on the lake so that would be a separate day but hiking you'll see in a minute and there was quite it was a it was a tough hike and it's not a long hike but it's a tough hike so Lake Louise is for those interested in seeing the purest of mountain experiences it's a special place to connect with nature and the Canadian Rockies landscape and as I mentioned it's 35 miles west of Bam It's about a 40 minute drive so Lake Louise offers majestic wilderness without huge crowds I mean this was one of the more popular places but it's not crowded like the city of Bam all right and is as well it's in its locally owned restaurants and it's there's a lot of shopping as well so there's a lot to do let's say if you are going in a group and you've got some people with need problems and they can't do the hike but they want to hang out at the hotel just tell them to dress a little more nicely than the people who are hiking Ok And so the areas mountainside teahouses are a must visit in the summer. In basic. In the winter you can see the ice carving Festival in January and World Cup skiing at the Lakes ski area now I have a background in snow skiing so I will be going back to see that it's my one sport that I'm not completely clumsy yet Ok so in order to get to Lake Louise you have to go to Banff as I mentioned and then you know you take the buses so we went into this parking lot and the deal is that you go in you park and they have these Forest Service guys that are telling you that it's going to be an hour or 2 in line but it's really a 30 minute wait so don't let them scare you off and wait till another time it literally took 20 to 30 minutes each time even though the forest ranger guys were like everyone be prepared it's going to be a 2 hour wait no it's not Ok so that's just an f. Why I also. One of the hikes was a 4 and a half mile trip starting at Lake Louise we went up switchbacks for about an hour and 20 minutes to get get to the tea house at Lake agonists Now I didn't realize they had named it the lake Agnes tea house because the lake is rather small compared to Lake Louise but it is beautiful as you sit out there and the scenery is amazing you're kind of looking at all the mountains surrounding and it is a popular tourist hike so there's quite a few people and there was a mind to get into the house and so the thing is is that you know you can look at the Caribbean color of Lake Louise from up there and you're right next to the waterfall of a lake Agnes coming down the mountain it's just it's beautiful and I have pictures that you'll see on my Facebook site as well as Victoria McVey dot com And basically you know it helps all of these these beautiful views really help you get up this tough trail because to be honest with you even though it's a short trail you're. Gain is over 1300 feet and so it's switchbacks and very frankly I'm proud of my dad for making this one he's 76 years old and even though it's short I saw some high schoolers huffing and puffing up this thing and you know I was just glad I could put an earphone in one because you know I'm a little bit of an asthmatic and so I have to kind of control my breathing as I go up this thing and so you know having also the distraction of all the beauty around you helps in the grueling again 1300 feet in basically a little over an hour and so you can look at the lake as you're going you know Lake Louise as you look down on it it is a completely different view than being at the bottom and looking across the lake and you know the waterfalls as I mentioned you are in a thick forest and so we had lunch at the teahouse once we finally helped and puffed and got up there. And by the way you also need to watch out because they do have donkeys and. They also have a donkey dung along the way so you you need to watch out for the steaming piles of donkey dung and don't step in them they're hard it's hard to get out of your shoes but to be honest with you that's how they actually get supplies up to the Tea House is they use donkeys because one time a year they do a. What he called a helicopter drop because it is difficult as I mentioned it's a pretty big gain and so the food that they make up there is all from scratch and it's a very you feel kind of like you're stepping back in time as well and once you go up there if you're not eating at the teahouse if you're bringing your lunch you're not allowed to throw away your. You know leftover food or trash at the teahouse because they require you to bring it back down and so. You know it's it's been it was a fabulous experience and you know I would just say. Be ready for a tough hike but also you know take take a moment to take in the beauty as well that will help you get through it and you know it was just it was really really cool as well and you do feel very remote and like you've accomplished something at the end and enjoy the time up there with your family I certainly did and that's what this show is about is teaching you how to get value out of your time and money and boy that was exactly the experience at Lake Louise will be coming right back with you here at the Victoria McVeigh show go to my Facebook site to check out the pictures. Welcome back to the Victoria McVey show you know as I mentioned before if you're just joining us we are talking about Western Canada and how really to gain value out of your time in vacationing and I recently just got back from western Canada with my family and I cannot think of a better way to eke value out of your time so I had mentioned I had been to Lake Louise and one thing that I didn't get to do there that I will go back and do is that if we had had more time I would like to do the plain of 6 glaciers hike the length is 5.3 kilometers now in order to do the conversion from kilometers to miles you times it by 6 and drop the last digit. And so I'm sorry point 6 and drop the last digit so the hiking time on that one is a 4 hour round trip Now the reason I would want to do this one instead of what we did was because as I mentioned the Agnus teahouse trail was very very difficult in the respect that you gained 1300. Feet in about an hour and a quarter and so you know this one is a 4 hour hike but you gain the sane elevation but over 4 hours so you're not just really pushing to gain that and the other thing is that when you get up to where you're going which is this like I don't know how it's basically considered a high mountain treasure chest a collection of impressive peaks and glaciers and then you can relax and enjoy this quaint Swiss built tea house and it's named by c.n.n. Travel as one of the top 11 tea houses in the world so I really liked the tea house that I went to I would like to see this other one considering it's you know named and well known as one of the top tea houses and the hike seems to be a little easier even though it's longer so you can really feel like you've got your get your bang for your buck out of that one it's longer and you don't have to push as hard and you go to this amazing tea house so that's my next next time I'm in the area that's the one I'm doing and so our right then basically that one just to recap is a you know it's a 16 I'm sorry 14 point 6 am loop so it's a 5 hour round trip hike. And there are plenty other reasons to go to Banff National Park and just do a quick visit on these in case you're interested so number one is the ice fields Parkway if you're looking for a breathtaking drive and you're not interested in really hiking that moment you can take the ice fields Parkway in Jasper Alberta it's rated one of the top drives in the world by Conde Nast Traveler and the ice filled Parkway is over 144 miles of a stretch of double lane highway right winding around the continental divide through soaring rocky mountain peaks ice fields and vast sweeping valleys of thick pine and large forests Ok so you also find more than 100 ancient glaciers cascading waterfalls and dramatic rocks buyers' and emerald Lakes beautiful and I did see some of those on my way to Bam from Canmore now as a side note I stayed in Canmore and I'll be talking about that in just a minute but just also to get into the band park area it is typically $20.00 if you're not staying in there so there is an aspect of that it's $20.00 Canadian to get in each day but it does last from 24 hours so if you come in at it's actually I think I believe it's actually 48 hours because we got in at 10 in the morning on one day and it lasted until 4 pm the next day so you get basically $10.00 a day all right so more rain lake is another place inside Bam national park that you want to do and it's. It's nestled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains it's a lodge as well that provides romantic getaways for those on a honeymoon anniversary hiking experience or a relaxing vacation now the band goal gondola is located just 5 minutes from the town of band on the show. Holder of the sulfur mountain in the heart of the Canadian Rockies sit back and relax and a 4 passenger enclosed gondola these are things that you know if you're not really involved in hiking but you want to see or if you've got somebody in your party that just has any problems back problems you know these are things that if while you're hiking they can do or you can do together if you have a longer trip and so if you would like to feel like you're on top of the world when you're standing on the spacious main level observation deck you know you can it'll lead you to the cosmic ray station National Historic Site and the stands ins peak meteorological station now Bam put up our Hot Springs we did talk about doing this but the problem was our crew wanted to hike there and it was like a 15 plus mile hike I was the one who spoke up and said My knees are not ready for that yet so but you can drive there and soak in a steamy hot mineral water where. You know people come and take in the waters for over 100 years and basically bans National Park you know hot springs welcomes visitors year round for an authentic heritage experience that is a favorite among visitors when in Bam do as the locals do come in the morning for the most relaxing visit by the way the locals also enjoy the bars Apparently you only have to be 19 years old to enjoy the bar scene in band and while we were there we did we went to several different pubs and watched the World Cup That was you know all of the show all of the shows all of the soccer finals and my brothers are huge huge bands I don't know if you were you know rooting for her away show or France or you know in the earlier runs you know Russia again I believe they were a major upset but you know we're going to have a little music for you here on the bar scene. Marty. I love that song Ok And so you know that was really really fun we did a little bit of afternoon you know the light of beers and watching the games. And it was it was really really fun and there are so strikingly quite a few pubs and so you know if you're going there you might as well take in the local fare because there's a lot of British Scottish I don't know Irish pubs I they're all kind of just pubs All right so anyways cave basin and national historic site they are also really really cool and in 1903 you know the railway workers stumbled onto a cave and it has been Canada's 1st national park and eventually the largest system of protected areas in the world. So you start with a discovery tour and there's impressive historic architecture bubbling mineral waters and underground cave interactive programs and exhibits on a 4 screen visual experience so something for everyone I'm just telling you you do want to go to this area it is not only a value there's so much to do that's a rich experience no matter if you are jogging through these trails or you are just sight seeing. Welcome back to the Victoria McVey show we're talking about Western Canada and all the neat things there are to do there my name is Victoria McVeigh and I am here to talk about and tell you how to value out of your time and mostly that is how you plan your vacations and how you spend your time on vacations and I will be coming to you with Victoria's vault of newsletters and things like that if you go to my Web site and if you want to see pictures of these experiences and what these things are like is kind of a an intro or appetizer to some of this go to my Facebook site Victoria mc on Victoria make day all right and so in the theme of Canada we're going to play a little bit of a Canada song just to get everybody right back in the mood. As I mentioned you know if you're just coming to us right now we we I was talking about the town of band and you know there were quite a few pubs I would say every 3rd or 4th place was a was a pub but fantastic and I think we went to the Rose and Crown and seemingly there is a rose in Crown on every in every little town over there in Cannes. So that was a popular name all right so on day 3 of my western Canada trip we had decided as a group to go and do the perimeter of Upper Canada ask us lake it was a little over 10 miles and on the perimeter of this canon ask an upper can ask its lake now if you are interested I have not only video but pictures of this trip on the perimeter and you can see how large this lake really is so as you're coming around you can kind of see where you are and you know pat yourself on the back as you're doing this trip because you can see how far you've come as you come around this lake All right so it is a natural lake that was turned into a reservoir the trail is primarily used for hiking walking nature trips and birding and is used best from March until October dogs are also able to use this trail but may must be kept on a leash up or can ask is along with lower can ask is Lake is located in Peter long he'd Provincial Park the lake is part of a series of natural and manmade lakes and can ask both valleys for hydroelectric power I did see a lot of that and you can see it in the pictures flood control and water reserves water levels are low with anticipation of runoff and forest forested peninsulas protrude from the shore in anticipation of becoming islands as the reservoir fills . The trail transitions into a large section of rock fall called pulseless slide Ok And so although the trail proceeds directly through a massive field of boulders which was striking and I'll talk about that in a minute there are a series of spots in steps which make navigation straight for the time is ideal for rest and some lunch in the sun I don't particularly like resting in the sun but some people really enjoy it I'm you know being here from the valley we all like being in the sun directly so while enjoying lunch off the trail and value voices can be heard but there is no one nearby. All right so now the hike tended to be about 17 kilometers is what you know the the different people from all trails that's an app you know have said and it had a 450 meter gain which again is quite again but it's throughout that long hike so you start out in the thick forest and you cross over a bridge with a waterfall and the shoreline looks like a picturesque tree gate graveyard if you go to my Facebook site you can see this it's very you know the trees have been weather worn so they're kind of a gray white and it's it's just a beaut I don't know how to explain it but it really looks like a tree graveyard and so we launched it a river where my brothers and I took off our shoes and stuck our feet in the river after about you know what seemed about 5 and a half miles it was so cold it burned my feet but in small doses it felt great and you know I may be talking about how to deal with some of the mosquitoes that were out there as well so we saw a bald eagle perched on top of a tree scouting for food while we could hear babies chirping in the neighbor neighboring large nest so what's interesting is that there was a dramatic change in the landscape of this hike after the halfway point I kind of got in trouble for having my earphones on because I went way ahead and my dad was yelling at me that bears can pop out of the forest from this rocky area that was mentioned earlier and it goes from a barren high forest desert to with no education just great walk to the forest and . You know that run in if the thing is the trail forks so you're going to want to stay closest to the lake and there are a few small islands on the perimeter that is that was mentioned but I'm just excited to tell you guys about this particular trip will be right back with Victoria McVeigh show. I am going to tell you now about the areas of I just finished talking about Upper Canada asks lake if you just missed that you can go to my website and Facebook at Victoria McVeigh All right and so we're going to talk now about where I stayed I stayed in Canmore and there were a couple of different reasons our family doesn't particularly love crowds I go on vacation to get away from the crowds and I feel like that's part of the value of having family time is not being stuck in tons of lines and tons of people and shoulder to shoulder squeezing through and so can more provides actually a little bit better value than band because it is not as popular but it's about 15 minutes down maybe 10 minutes down the road and if you're strolling down Main Street and you are overwhelmed by the spectacular views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains I mean I do have a picture right outside of my hotel which was kind of a condo and we did that in the in the respect that these particular condos also had kitchens in them so we didn't have to eat out if we didn't want to we had the flexibility of having shopped at the local Safeway and you know we mostly packed our lunches for these hikes and then we made breakfast as a group there was about 8 of us myself my brothers my dad and his friends and we all pitched in for the food so it was also a really nice way to bond with everyone in the morning versus just you know kind of going and sitting in paying for someone else to serve you you know some of us did the cooking some of us did the dishes and I would trade off and it was it was a nice it wasn't nice feeling honestly a little bit of a family feeling because we hadn't done it that way before last year in Spain we did the whole sit down breakfast and so this one was new and I thought I thought it was fantastic so basically when you're in downtown. Canmore you feel like you can reach out and touch these mountains and you'll see on my Facebook site it's amazing there are many locally owned and operated business says stores and restaurants in this area downtown Canmore not only has the Safeway but art galleries live music venues and local theater performances and you'll also see that they have indoor rock climbing area that is out of this world I've never seen anything like that because they do have the real thing out on the mountains and if you don't want to if you want more of a little indoor safety they have the indoor rock climbing Ok so one of my favorites is the can more wine merchants who doesn't like wine. Ok I love wine particularly red for me but the camera wine merchants are purveyors of fine and uncommon wines spirits and beer for those of us in our group that were not wine fans they were definitely beer fans and if you're looking for something a bit different but affordable This is the place to go now your kids if you have children on this trip might like the armadillo game store they specialize in games puzzles in the most popular board games which on a family trip or a group trip is super helpful and even if you're sitting at the bar you can play games with chess or backgammon all kinds of cards we did and so they even hold magic nights in the store and now this we didn't participate in but it looks really cool it's a great way to pull your kids away from their phones and video games I'm all about fun not phones and since the signal isn't the best in the wilderness area you kids might welcome the idea of playing some board games that is another benefit to going here is you know no service. Unless you want to pay roaming charges so it really does force the family to bond All right so and if you enjoy jewelry like I do in Canmore you'll find at a family owned business called the k.v. a Fine jewelers they feature custom made pieces and they repair and. Restore jewelry as well so I got a lot of flak from my family about wearing my necklace lavalier have my kids burst stones on him and they were like you're going to catch that or break that I didn't but if I did I would have taken this there and because it is an important piece for me and so they have they specialize in current Canadian treasures such as Jade in am a light from the St Mary's River in southern Alberta and the finest Canadian rocks diamonds mined in northern Canada caveat also carry some classics brand such as citizen watches and clique super feat diamond rings and Aurora So if you're really interested in maybe you say you're going without your spouse with your man's group hiking and you want to go home and bring your spouse something beautiful from the area and make it you know it a temptation for her or him to come back with you this is a good option All right so if you enjoy a company cozy place for a quiet read with a hot beverage or glass of wine not to mention a sweet or savory treat go to this is one of my favorite cool places I was pulled out of here twice Chapter 2 to room behind cafe books Ok I love cafe books this is where I was pulled out of twice but I'm going to tell you a little more about this Ok so with a wide variety of previously owned and read books Chapter 2 is a pleasant break to enjoy a good read recently recognized by Chantilly in magazine as one of Canadian Canada's dreamiest bookstores café books Chapter 2 is the perfect place to lose yourself in a quaint book in the tradition of an old world tea room they have 2 parts to this bookstore I purchased a book from the new books area in the front of the store from what one of their employees they have about 5 or 6 sections which employees recommend certain books and it tells you the employees type of personality and their. Kind of books they like to read and so I bought the book The Mirror list by a barber Shapiro and honestly had to be dragged out of there twice by my brothers and my dad's friend because it's such a engaging place and the way they have it set up is so cool they had kind of a whole Anthony Bourdain section with their cookbooks and and it just was really really cool and my father even bought an Ivanhoe book or the book Ivanhoe. From there back area which houses the used books with all the tables for reading and sipping coffee and even eating a baked good and I believe they do have wine back there but the books are stored in our wars and bookshelves and it's just amazing and on a side note this bookstore always also carried this and serves rave coffee this was a daily stop for me at the rave coffee house me and my brothers and my father separated from the group every morning to have our caffeine fix I'm not as nice of a person without at least some caffeine in the morning and I highly recommend the rave latte with almond milk it has a very soft kind of I don't know sweet finish without it being overly sweet so you didn't need to add sugar they also have a free little library in the coffee shop in which you know the locals if you guys don't know what a free library is the locals will finish a book and put it in there and somebody else takes a book and switches it out and if you haven't seen these in your city you'll see them by people's mailboxes but I thought it was cool this place put the free little library in their coffee shop. Highly highly recommend now just as a side note if you want to see some pictures of some of this or you're interested in doing a trip like this and having it done for you so you don't have to do all the research go to my website Victoria McVey dot com and you can see you know on the from the radio show you can see the podcast if you missed any piece of the show and you can also get subscribe to my newsletter that's coming out soon and my book is coming out pretty quick here at the household Hussars handbook which also teaches you how to squeeze a deal out of your money and in this case we're talking all about how we can squeeze the deals out of our time on vacation so also one other thing that's coming up is I will be also here in the valley on news channel 3 good morning Arizona on August 11th they're actually giving me 2 segments I will be on at 845 and 9 15 in the morning on Aug 11th so I am not just a radio personality I will also be on t.v. Teaching you how to eke that value out of your dollar All right so now we're going to talk about Bam for a quick moment after a day of hiking or skiing in the winter months what could be more relaxing been lowering your body into a hot steaming water and I don't recommend doing that at the hotel when you've got the hot springs of Bam imagine sinking deeper into the water in tipping your head back you gaze up at the dark sky scattered with stars in $83.00 rail workers stumbled across the hot world hot water and steam flowing out of a cave on the lower slopes of what is now known as sulfur mountain. And so you know the hot springs was discovered to be one of the 9 sulfurous Hot Springs in on the mountains northeast flank my favorite place though in Bam I'm going to just say bar none what girl doesn't like ice cream I am a female guys so the ice cream shop called cows there was a line about. I would say half a block long outside of cows specializing in super premium ice cream now it wasn't just me my brothers were on both sides of me waiting to get in as my dad you know he's on a diet apparently so he was not going so they have wild flavors and they had wow we can gooey Mouli I mean Cookie Monster was my one brother and I got messy Bessie a fantastic you've got to look up these these these flavors and very honestly the staff was more than happy I probably tasted 5 or 7 different tastes as even there was a huge growing line behind me. Of these different ice creams and they were very patient and it was so good. So they have a banner in the store advertising the fact their ice cream was chosen as the best in the world by a tourism company this is back in 2008 but I still think it's true today they also have this store of of kind of funny about cows and so they all have a you know it's a whole different thing on their ice cream shop and it was super cool so there are also many restaurants in Bam to choose from ranging from pizza places deli steak houses and there's even this one place it's kind of like a steak on a rock place grizzlies and I believe it's called grizzlies and so if you're searching you can even find though at a tie and Mexican food restaurant if you're really in the mood however. My brothers and I noticed being from the southwest that it was called Mexican cuisine I personally don't know that I would ever go someplace that considered Mexican food cuisine so. All right anyways the big thing is the coffee and tea houses you also find a lot of nightlife in the town so Coming up I'll share tips on how some of those pesky mosquito keep away mosquitoes which was a big problem and the grizzly bears and so if you want to see some of these pictures and some of the these things done for you and where to go and how to spend your time appropriately so you're not having questions with your family on how to spend the time where to go what to do I can map it all out for you just go to Victoria McVey dot com So now we're going to get into natural insect repellent I did use some deep because I forgot to bring my dryer sheets but that is actually what I prefer to use to keep the mosquitoes off of me some of the pictures took so so long to get because you stopped and you got eaten by mosquitoes like Swiss cheese and so another couple things you can use are Tea Tree citronella lemon grass and lavender Now real quick Another thing I want to talk about are the bears. But it looks like we're running out of time so I just want to tell you there are a lot of bears out there if you want to see it on my Facebook site go right to there but also never pack your bear spray t.s.a. I'll get you here's the deal you guys have a fantastic week will be coming week to see you next Sunday on the Victoria McVey show have a beautiful week. Oh .
