B.b.c. News. Hello and welcome to News from the b.b.c. World Service coming to you live from London I'm Julian marshal today after dozens of people are killed at a super Muslim shrine in Pakistan will assess the threat that the Islamic state group poses there also a favorite question a quiz masters around the world how many continents are there if you think you know the answer you might now have to change it and the polygamist daughter we were taught to live off of him as the one true prophet on earth and we were also taught that we were celestial children having been born from the prophet or all that even though we were treated talk. We still believe we were the last of. Me to women who fled a deadly cult run by her father. But we go 1st to Pakistan where hundreds of people have been killed in militant attacks over the past 3 years including many women and children it's a steady drumbeat of violence this year alone there been nearly 20 incidents which every now and again then reaches a crescendo the perpetrators are from different must militant groups but increasingly from Islamic state affiliates and as in the latest attack on Thursday the Soofi shrine in Sindh province in which a suicide bomb blasts left at least 80 people dead officials have admitted a security lapse and that certainly the view of relatives of the victims they've been angrily protesting at the shrine wielding batons and torching a police vehicle this man a cousin of one of the victims said calls for more security have been ignored but are glory it was security need. A board every eye is weeping a proper security who was not there we had been telling the dogman Department and the other officials that there was no security and that anything could happen any time but nobody listened now the proper tutors were able to take lives. Well in this particular instance it's already seem to have moved quickly against those suspected of involvement in the attack officials say more than 35 minutes since of being killed in the course of a nationwide security sweep the army is also saying that attacks the have been carried out in Pakistan over the past couple of days be no interest from across the border from Afghanistan and it's given the Afghan authorities a list of 76 high profile militants it wants handed a via Mohammed nuff is a car is Pakistan foreign ministry spokesman in Islamabad Firstly why had the authorities done more to protect the Soofi shrine the palace they are actually tied with is a soft touch if they wish to save the country. And this is what they have carried out this condemn over there to test this a country of 200000000 people so you know you understand that these people can attack it can happen anywhere it happened in many other Western countries also that they have been targeting these soft targets the terrorist attacks which have been carried out in the last 5 days we have been those who are to get a sponsor pretty quickly where the facts were known and then I have vanished and you know where the actions based here in Afghanistan and your government wants Afghanistan to do more to control the activities of these is the missed groups. Well I think what we're asking is that you know that. He has spoken with the National Security Advisor when it's done and what he talked about is that this right is being used by these terrorist elements and we asked them to cooperate and we have gotten them that. We have done some kind of just sharing as well and what we need is a cooperation from their side cooperation not on the grounds of change of intelligence but also in terms of water management because that is one of the big concern for us to cross border with there's a misconception but I mean it is the case is it not to the Pakistani state even if it's not a governmental level has tended to pick and choose in the past of Islam is stuck militant groups did has supported on sinking hit particularly groups in Afghanistan it's so could it not just speed that the chickens are coming home to roost No I think I must say this thing that you need to understand that who is the biggest suffer in this in the case of our terms of I believe everybody north has acknowledged that Pakistan is the biggest victim of terrorism and the terrorism which has been perpetrated by the foreign element in charge time and we have taken very concrete measures and carried out a military operation is again is test elements are down discrimination and that is one reason why we have. Taken you know in numbers tension and the chance going down but could it not be that the Pakistani state needs to take more preventative measures as I think we are doing whatever measures we need to take best to take measures and save the lives and prevent any arguments to carrying out more terrorists. Actually we have been struggling we have lost more than 70070500 citizens including 6001 was for disease your fish of. Fight against terrorism we have been cooperating with the countries we have been doing intelligence sharing with the planet so we have been doing what we can even countries that that was Mohammed nuff easer carriera Pakistan foreign ministry spokesman in Islamabad and a madras Sheed is an expert on Islam is militancy in Pakistan and Afghanistan to see except the government's argument that Pakistan is too big country to protect from attacks Well there's no doubt that there is truth at the time that this campaign launched but it is a nationwide campaign it affected problems it really you know you can't protect everyone but really if you want to take. The government ministry. Out certain terrorist groups to continue operating in. Alibrandi who ensconced. Yardley groups in law or not they're supposed to be. Fighting. But other militant groups are using the relatively rare. So blinding. And they touted so you have a very complicated situation and frankly more and more people I mean yet in Europe are not buying into. Blaming external Potence when clearly internal have been hurling these acts of terror is not the answer so you're saying that the Pakistani state needs to move against a wall is the Miss militant groups in. In the country without fear or favor exactly that is the real crux of the problem we need a comprehensive. Counterterrorism strategy which takes it all group. With some groups and politically that is not taking place during the government launched. An initiative to try to keep what national action plan to do away with terrorism when the American Heart of those points those 20 points have not been implemented. That you're going to conquer terrorism unless you deal with the radical religious school hate speech. Now not to be that you know really think that is the Pakistani government and the Pakistani military to one with this particular threat Well no not really I'm not being around the same time we have a new army come Arbitron who is trying to attack him so you need a better relationship with Prime Minister of Iraq than his predecessor but that. Is very complex the government didn't which is run by. A good relation extremist groups who continue to be left alone and by the military had good relations with other groups such as. The civilian government would like to get rid of me and. Make any corporate head counterterrorism program run accepted by both the government and the army but it does appear that if there is the political and military will the Pakistani state can be more effective in the wake of this most recent attack we've had. A nationwide security sweep which has resulted say the army in the deaths of more than 35 militants We've also got this list of 76 high profile militants Pakistan wants handed over from Afghanistan so it seems as if the will is that something can be done yet certainly what people are hoping or what are needed to learn strategy here all of. Which you know I. Think. You know I hope. Ever. Going to get. That out. There was a madras Cian expert on Islamist militancy in Pakistan and Afghanistan and the author of the book Pakistan on the Brink The Future of America Pakistan and Afghanistan he was speaking from the city of Lahore. 6 years ago today the repression of a protest in Libya's 2nd city of Benghazi inspired a revolution that eventually led to the fall of Colonel Moammar Gadhafi today there are more than 1500 armed militias in the country different governments rule in the west around Tripoli and in the East this week on News Hour extra when Ben adjourns and his panel of guests to recessing the country's best chance for peace and stability and asking ordinary Libyans like Hala bogus a lawyer in Tripoli what life is like in Libya 6 years after the revolution. Well it's quite confusing to even be in a daily basis the day it's no mo so we go to. We go out for a coffee and for lunch but when the sun is down as we say things is different we are more careful and we think that it could be more in secure and who is it's in the city that's posing a threat the problem is that more or less there is no role of people you know that is gangs that is people who steal cars that can harm harm you personally so you cannot really locate who is doing this but they did it so many people with their with weapons all around city and we need to be careful actually when typically we say that we don't know what the next hour hold for us so we always try to be careful any of the at neighborhood where you live you know if there is any flights arms flights on anything my family they have to leave the country because they were really worried about this kidnapping of kids and all this insecurity all over the place up was Libyan lawyer Hala reggae's send for more on Libya invade countries search for stability just search online for b.b.c. News extra. Coming up we'll hear from the u.s. State of Kansas in this cattle rancher who believes that the mainstream media in America live in an echo chamber I see a media who does not want this president to succeed at all if the conservative American was listening to so that we can explain where we're coming from I think there would be a lot more understanding within the media about why this happened and the latest headlines from the b.b.c. Food group Kraft Heintz has proposed a merger with the Dutch consumer goods company Unilever but it's been rejected and the former chief executive of Hong Kong Donald Tsang has been found guilty of misconduct in office in a case related to his use of a luxury flat in China. This is Julian Marshall with news hour live from the b.b.c. In London. A couple who 1st met over a garbage can half a lifetime ago of finally to get married Joan. And Ken Selway now in their eighty's met back in 1975 in Gloucester west of London Ken was homeless at the time and Joan came across him as he was right feeling through garbage after decades of as they say ups and downs of the couple to wed on Saturday the B.B.C.'s John k. Went to meet them in the little all that was. There for people to sit on the bride and groom Joan and Carol back on the street where they 1st met this story reads like a novel appropriate that it began here in a bookshop. And that with. Joan ram a little shop in the center of Gloucester with her husband and one day in 1975 she saw Ken through the window he was homeless and hungry the been reserved there that's where the been where years ago and took for food what would you find in there was sort of food would you take. Anything there was a turbo if you could always hungry. So Joe gave Camac up of tea that day and sketched this picture of him he was a shy man who'd suffered a head injury working in the coal mines he developed schizophrenia and ended up sleeping rough they always joked. And said he didn't belong in the street. Gentlemanly and he spoke very very nicely I mean look. Joan invited Kent to move into her family home and she helped him find medical treatment over the years he became part of the household drifting in and out of their lives over Joan's relationship with Ken was purely platonic her husband would sometimes be jealous but as the decades passed the 3 of them became good friends then in 1983 Jones' husband Norman died oh. My. Which brings us to today Canon Joan a back to Mary 42 years after that 1st cup of tea how much of a difference it has Joan made to your life picked up and. Security now. Above her head. At times Ken's mental health problems have been severe but Joan has helped him and together they've tried to raise awareness of schizophrenia the voices in my head would have drove me to kill my. Do you think she saved your life yes yes she did. Make me swear so. You know what I think of you I don't have to put it into words. It's just part of me. The happy couple June 9 ingoing can sell way we wish them well the Munich Security Conference is an annual event bringing together friend and foe to discuss international security policy not usually with a military tinge this year the Certainly a lot to chew over Russian cyberattacks the election of President Trump Britain's decision to leave the European Union and with the member states of paying their dues to NATO but a 1st for the 1st time global health security is on the agenda one of the prime movers is the Gates Foundation the man himself is delivering a keynote speech on Saturday which will highlight the health security threats the world is facing bid from pandemics or bioterrorism and the need to do more to combat the museum's James Coomera Sammy has been speaking to Bill Gates or one of the the great threats that we face that could kill you know millions of people it is a natural epidemic or an intentionally caused epidemic which is called bioterrorism in the advances in biology made it easier for somebody with more line intent to construct something like a flu or a smallpox and we've seen even recently although they weren't large scale they can sweep entire world we've seen the whole crisis in the secret crisis and those are actually not as transmissible as something that likely to come along in the next several decades so the question of do we teach the advanced and biology and figure out how we can make vaccines quickly and drugs and diagnostics do we go out and do surveillance Do we have simulations so the type of questions that were asked there in the boat crisis and people are. Prepared for that we respond more quickly that's the issue I'm raising here in Munich and you believe that it is almost certain that one of these pandemics a highly lethal global pandemic will occur in our lifetimes you put it so this is not something theoretical This is something you believe is very likely the last time an epidemic killed over 50000000 was right after all our where the Spanish flu but I mean killed more people than the war itself we've had some since then but none as Biggest that one exact probabilities are hard to compute but the good news is that if we're prepared for this if we use these new tools of biology that will help us with the diseases we have every year will help us with a b. And malaria and so investing in innovation around these tools both to prevent the epidemics end to deal with Clinton factious diseases is a huge win win where are we now if there were to be a someone sitting behind a computer able to spread the deadly disease around the world now how prepared are we to combat it we're not prepared we don't have the surveillance networks out there we haven't done the same way we do war games we haven't simulated that situation and we haven't looked into where the right companies can make drugs and vaccines and how we would allocate those and approve new things the people we count on for double war type situation haven't been trained for the challenges that an epidemic would represent and cross training the military and in a doing these simulations advance in these new tools it requires some investment but on a scale of what we spend on our defense budgets not gigantic and you're talking about as you put it germ games and war games involve generally conventional armies practicing them and move as what would a germ game look like because. All of us potentially could be affected by this if there was one done in 2001 looking at a smallpox epidemic and that one came out smallpox one humanity 0 because the right response things weren't there but doing that and then realizing Ok How quickly should we see it how quickly should we get diagnostics how quickly should we do quarantine how do we avoid pm ik what sort of transport capabilities to the military another see how to supply chains break down in a modern economy and you know by practicing which is what we do for various natural disasters or war then our response would be far more effective in terms of your optimism about the kind of advances that we have made in recent years where do you see that optimism where should the priority be put at the moment well the bad news is that creating what you need to start an epidemic used to require a government level effort and now even a small group would be capable of doing that the good news is that the defensive tools the drugs vaccines diagnostics if we take the latest science and we invest in those things then we get the turnaround time even for something that the prices would be down to months and many years and and so we could contain it in a much better way and those those advanced biology will help help us with the ongoing to see. In that surveillance out in places like Africa even if there's not an epidemic it'll help us understand seizes that are there on a regular basis and so there's a lot of synergies in taking these biology and surveillance networks in investing a bit more in them that was a Bill Gates speaking to us as James Saami. News. Coming up next a big blow for a South Korean icon but 1st our regular look at the world the business and Nigeria Africa's largest economy is grappling with its so worst economic crisis in decades and as our correspondent Martin patience now reports from the commercial capital Lagos the downturn is so severe that so-called recession proof industries are being badly hit. In a country that delights in conspicuous consumption weddings in Nigeria are often lavish Affairs at this reception 24 archway decked out boards ace fancy coat tails and even fireworks indoors. The couple both didn't spend a penny bright one or dream wedding after coming 1st in a dancing competition but no everyone looking to get hitched is so lucky my name is I can assure the c.e.o. Of where the expo where the expo is Nigeria's largest wooden exhibition How much does a wedding like this cost it's pretty high end so where do leg it's with of course not in less than about 2X5W2X5W which is what $50000.00 people need to get married yes but how are they making savings they don't negotiate or do look for someone that can do similar at the cheaper costs Nigeria is officially tightening its belt not there has much choice the plunging global oil prices put the economy in turmoil mighty Spain crucially it's sucking dollars out of a country that imports almost everything pushing off. Even funerals are being hard hit as a small watch shop tucked away down an alleyway a carpenter is making a cough and they used to be 3 men here but a few not there. Tells me laid off 2 workers because there wasn't enough business what would you say is that average price. Of people buying a go through $180.00 which is about $200.00 whereas before how much would people spend I'm buying a girl from somebody can buy a for 5 when they did so that average before the recession was maybe of a $1000.00 whereas now it's $200.00. Relief though maybe a hands rising oil prices could pull them out of its current trying says but even so hard lessons up in lamp says it cannot show the c.e.o. From the wedding industry or the country he says can no longer rely on the easy money made from oil it's helped I think we needed it at some point what this has done for us is to change. It's no more do usual way of free money just comes and also now people understand like who he is even when you get free money you have to be very strategic about it it's not everyone is sort charitable Many blame government policies for making a bad situation even war. Newlywed couple at the start of a new life together there's plenty to be happy about but for the millions of knowledge eating and struggling to get by it may be a while before they get an a thing to celebrate. That was the B.B.C.'s Martin patience reporting from Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos. You're listening to news from the b.b.c. I'm Julian Marshall 2 of South Korea's most powerful dentist is an hour caught up in a massive political corruption scandal President Park Geun hye the daughter of a former South Korean leader is currently facing impeachment proceedings because of a scandal Nobby add to the South Korean conglomerate Samson Lee j. Young has been arrested as part of the same corruption investigation that speak to Elise who saw a correspondent for America's National Public Radio and one of the charges against Jay Leno as he sometimes called in the West the primary charges Julian are embezzlement bribery and her jury and this is all pertaining to this sprawling scandal that involves the president as you mentioned and led to her impeachment in December she's now currently awaiting the results of a Constitutional Court decision to find out whether she'll be removed and who is. He alleged to have bribed. And this is why this story is so interesting he's alleged to have bribed a close accomplice of or a confidant of President Park an ace this confidant is considered Earth being called Korea's Rasputin's. And what prosecutors allege is that Lee Jr was involved in the transfer of some $3738000000.00 u.s. Dollars of Samsung funds to chasten shill who is the confidant in order to curry favor with the government because there was a controversy or merger that Samsung wanted to see approved 2 years ago that merger was approved and largely with the help of the support of the government pension fund which was a vote you know or a factor in the decision on the merger and so. There's that part of it but also there's lots of other Korean conglomerates that are ensnared in this Samsung is just the most notable one and he is the 1st head of a major conglomerate to face arrest as a result of this scandal I'm he is the heir apparent is he not I mean this this is very bad news I would imagine for Samsung and it's some brand image in South Korea that's right. Leader Young was expected to really take over the company for his father Samsung. Samsung's head league and he has been hospitalized in incapacitated since a heart attack 3 years ago and so he was really the son was really in the midst of consolidating power Samsung is so close to the lives of Koreans that this country is often called the Republic of Samsung you can be born at a Samsung hospital after you die you can be buried at a Samsung grave Samsung phones. Not only obviously its major tech unit but also ship building insurance confectionaries dry cleaners theme parks you name it Samsung is tied to some aspect of Korean life and so it's a huge deal when the company suffers not only the blows of the Galaxy Note 7 and those phones that were catching on fire but also this which is so tied to the upper echelons of Korean politics and governments like many thanks to the correspondent for America's National Public Radio in so. Now our bill Le Baron was the leader of a polygamist cult responsible for more than 20 murders in Mexico in the United States in the 1970 s. The killings continued even after his death his daughter Nahla Baron Sprague speaks to the B.B.C.'s Brian Wheeler about how she and her surviving siblings siblings have tried to escape their father's bloody legacy. To live in Him as the one true prophet on earth and we were also taught that we were celestial children having been born from the prophet or over there and even though we were treated so poorly we still believe we were. All of a baron's father was one of the most infamous coat leaders in American history. He was the self-proclaimed prophet of the Church of the Lamb of gold a fundamentalist offshoot of the Mormon faith the followers of the Le Baron believed he was receiving his instructions directly from got these included orders to kill anyone who challenged position as the one true prophet as a result on a group on the run from the law we were talking we were being persecuted because we were God's chosen people and that was what they used to. All the moving in the middle of the night and staying ahead of the law spent a miserable childhood being shuttled from one overcrowded safe house to the next often in the company of 49 siblings and some of the 13 Sister Wives the young girls were groomed to become wives of polygamist men that were already had wives we were going to accept that and in our family as early as 151617 years old when we married into families that were already polygamous so when I escaped at age 13 I kind of escaped by the skin of my teeth. What the young on the didn't know was that her father who only met on a handful of occasions was wanted for orchestrating a string of murders starting in 1972 with the killing of his older brother Joe Joe was the leader of a rival polygamist sect based in Mexico who refused to accept claimed to be the one true prophet sent to Earth to purify the Mormon faith we had threatening letters coming from herbal and the Church of the Lamb of God has followers so we were warned constantly Ruth Warriner is Jola Baron's youngest daughter I remember my mom telling us when we were growing up that if we heard gunshots or bombs exploding that I needed to pick up my baby brother and take him into the peach trees around our property and hide and we knew that he was threatening to kill other members of our church and in fact had several of them killed. The f.b.i. Finally caught up with the villa Baron in 1979 and he died in prison 2 years later but his reign of terror was far from over as crime reporter Mike Carter explained to a b.b.c. Documentary crew burble wrote a book of new covenant because what it essentially is it's a hit list of people who felt who are evil felt had betrayed him had abandoned the church had a band in his teaching and June 1980 ovals remaining followers carried out his deadly orders 4 people were murdered in separate attacks within 15 minutes the 4 o'clock murders as they became known shocked America for on a who had broken away from my father's church with the help of motion of the pain is still too much to back at one time should've been amongst ovals most fanatical followers and is alleged to have been involved in some of the cults atrocities but that was not the man on a new mark was a kind of man and I don't believe for one minute that he grown up in a normal family setting that he would have done any of the things that he was accused of on his own he was a good father to his children losing was a very difficult friend of the circumstances that we lost like Ruth Warren a on has spent years in therapy trying to heal a shattered life she's also turned a back on polygamy 6 cult members including some of on his own siblings were eventually jailed over the 4 o'clock murders. Now after more than 20 years on a believes that the bloodletting and the feuding is finally had to bend and with the publication of our own memoir The polygamist daughter she and her siblings can finally step out from the long dark shadow cast by their father how I am is a direct result of experiencing freedom from the control that my father imposed on myself and everybody else having that freedom to become who I am and who I was naturally and that self-expression that I've learned that been part of the healing journey for me I kind of get to have the final word here in saying oh this is who I am. And that person. Loved their own daughter of Erbil a barrel speaking to the B.B.C.'s Brian Wheeler and but of offbeat news this dick Bruno the Dutch illustrator and author who created the much loved cartoon rabbit Miffy has died at the age of $89.00 Bruner is said to have created the character to amuse his young son after they spotted a Brad Pitt on holiday together he wrote more than 30 books about made his adventures which sold over 80000000 copies worldwide. Now I promise this isn't fake news scientists have discovered a new continent research to save a landmass some which New Zealand sits has all the characteristics of a continent even though most of it is under the ocean is stage ready to Michael Bristow told my colleague Celia happen more yes it's an amazing story this isn't it schoolchildren across the world told that they were actually 7 continents but now there might be an 8th continent this is the result of researches mostly based in New Zealand who have looked at the land surrounding New Zealand most of it under the scene of concluded that actually it should count as a continent they reason they say that is because continents have certain characteristics in this landmass meet those characteristics it's a distinct geology it's raised above the surrounding area it's got a thicker crust than the surface of the floor of the ocean all those things make it a continent and even the fact that 94 percent of this continent is submerged is only New Zealand and New Caledonia which is above water that makes no difference so why is there a push to call it a continent now haven't they known about this landmass for a while they have but research into continents and what constitutes a continent is going on even the definition of the word changes and that's something the research is he hit head on they start talking about what a continent is and what a continent isn't and obviously they realise that people might be a little expect skeptical about this they say they address that very point they say the end of the large and the obvious can sometimes be overlooked in natural science learn something new about the world every day thank you Michael. News from princes Christina the sister of King Philippe of Spain has been cleared in a tax fraud trial but her husband has been given a 6 year jail term. This is Julian Marshall good news from the b.b.c. World Service It's coming up for a month since Donald Trump took office his presidency has been described as intense controversial and chaotic Mr Trump himself hit back in his latest news conference and said that despite not having his full cabinet his administration was a fine tuned machine he launch new attacks on the media too and told reporters their level of dishonesty was out of control many trump supporters agree believing that mainstream media doesn't represent them and is biased against the president the b.b.c. Shaima colonialist traveled to the state of Kansas to find out what rural America makes of the Donald Trump presidency so far. It's remarkable the difference that you get when you drive just 40 minutes west of Kansas City into rural Kansas. In an open field in tailgate French tailgate farm and I'm just surrounded by cows as as you can hear grass everywhere I'm here to speak to Kirk's hours he's in charge of the ranch here about life in this area and what he makes of a Trump presidency. I must describe to our listeners if there is a picture of a cowboy in some dictionary I think yours would be a perfect wanted to be uniform boy hat you know and a lovely American flag scarf and your you know your gel a or your vest in your your denim shirt would you describe yourself as a cowboy I would my 1st job actually was as a cowboy when I was 13 and that's what got me into this business and you know I've matured now so we call ourselves cattlemen after we mature right I'm wondering if in this landscape a little bit out of the buzz of the city if any of of what's going on in Washington the controversies and you know the conversations that are happening about the Trump presidency are they filtering out here as you can see these cows are not worried about you know if you know you don't seem to care. So far I am generally pleased with the kind of moves that he has made national security issues some of the moves to dampen regulations if we can get past this whole everybody hates trial thing I think some of the economic policies will make everybody feel a little better well it's interesting that you say that everybody hates Trump because definitely not everybody hates Trump here we. We are I mean we just came from Kansas City and it's that by the description of people who live in Kansas City it's a Democratic bubble we drove here and it's kind of like a sea of red of conservative Republican voters we can all get along out here and I think the media does tend to everybody hates Trump they have no idea what I'm doing out here and they have no idea how I get along with my neighbors who are Democrats I have a very lovely friend a widow lady that I take care of an elderly lady go over and and make sure she has firewood for stove She's a Democrat I'm a Republican we disagree on some issues but we're still people and we're still neighbors and we love each other out here but do you acknowledge that Donald Trump the man that you voted for has contributed a lot to the division that's happening at the moment to the ratcheting up of the rhetoric of fear and some would describe it as a rhetoric of hate as well I see a media who does not want this president to succeed at all and so to give him any victories in anything that he does or comes out with. Do I wish that he had done some things differently Sure absolutely I would like to see Mr Trump get off of the tweet you don't need to do that he's not a politician he hasn't experienced the political world at all and I think that's why a lot of people like him because he does shoot from the hip Kirky talked a lot about the media and also about the divisions in the country at the moment and obviously there are clear divisions 32 camps now that are not talking to each other and many people especially Trump supporters feel that their side is not properly represented and I'm just wondering if you had a message for the people on the other side of the political aisle what would you say. Don't listen to yourselves so much who am I mean well the media listening to media I mean it's seems to me like an echo chamber and I'm not saying that there are some people on the right that don't have their head in the Necco chamber but I think if the conservative American was listening to so that we can explain where we're coming from I think there would be a little more understanding within the media about why this happened this Trump presidency didn't just happen overnight and it wasn't a fluke. And we have every Michele MacNeill in Kansas now it said that President Putin toasted Donald Trump's election victory with a glass of champagne and Russia's state controlled media has since been positively bubbly in its complementary coverage of the new u.s. President but hang on a minute it seems that the party might now be over Russia's most popular tabloid newspapers now saying that you need to be drunk to understand Mr Trump's true position after his contradictory statements about NATO the Bruces Sarah Rainsford joins us live from Moscow and is this just a one off from this tabloid newspaper Sarah No I think it's a general shift in tone that we've been detecting over the past few days really here in Russia where as you say there was this sort of mood of celebration after Donald Trump was elected people in parliament were toasting it there were some sort of party is when people thought that Donald Trump would be good for Russia and I think people are now beginning to see contradictions and perhaps a warning signs in in fact how he might deal with Russia and certainly comes the most up after which is the paper that you mentioned said he was full of contradictions that men should NATO it mentioned. America's position on Crimea which Russia annexed from Ukraine there are other papers too suggesting that it's hard to believe that people wants toasted Donald Trump's victory here in Russia this is the other must be one of the mainstream broadsheets here saying that it looks like Donald Trump is under pressure over his links with Russia and that any move he makes especially any concessions towards Russia Russia will now be looked at under a microscope there's a real shift in tone and I say it's starting to creep in over the past few days and has the media reach this conclusion on its own Nora's there a bit of a scare coming here from the Kremlin but I think you know there are newspapers here who are independent which are independent and those papers are that are seeing what we're all seeing which is President Trump saying different things now he's president to what he said on the campaign trail and certainly Russia saying that. In the White House's position on crime in particular the states of crime and many Russians believe that Mr Trump has suggested that Crimea would be would stay Russia now I think it's going to be handed back to a crane a 2nd that's what Donald Trump has hinted So I think there's a real change potentially in policy and that's reflected in the media here Sara Many thanks for that type as they see Sarah Rainsford speaking live from the Russian capital Moscow and that's it from this edition of News from a German Marshall and the rest of the team in London goodbye.
