It was their 1st week and they had a budget $80000000.00 We will be talking about it today on the show $45000000.00 here in the u.s. $53000000.00 overseas bringing the worldwide total to 98000000 now you notice that your figure the total was a 1000000 more than the figure I gave you for its its opening weekend that's because they did Amazon Prime showings way back on June 30th and that's figured figured in the total numbers but it doesn't count towards their opening weekend so they got and extra $1000000.00 kind of in advance of their official opening I hear there's a lot of advantages to being a prime member apparently on Tuesday and Wednesday was prime day and the only thing I bought was. There as this spider flying around I'm flying spider Yes and leaving is what I mean all over me. We we only bought like 2 things with Jennifer did you buy anything during prime day for yourself I went to Whole Foods because now they're owned by Amazon so that was my way of celebrating prime. Oh and that's how you got a special deal right then they gave you spend $10.00 worth of free money at Whole Foods and then Amazon gave me $10.00 more free money because you did that so that was pretty super special thank you now that's not how it got a grocery store and we got to grocery stores because Amazon was somehow involved in some movie hey did you know that Incredibles 2 is now the highest grossing animated film of all time to mess to clean. I did I did not know that did you know that Jennifer. I did not know that. Joy smart movie show. Thanks so much for joining us today on the smart movies so we're so happy to have you. Think. I'm kind of. And I hope you did not get splashed in this portion of the so we are going to share with you our thoughts on the equalizer to. Someone pointing out. That you have something I want to share. Oh I'm Max. Came up on the screen for the radio people when they want to know who I am to the equalizer to rated r. We're going to share with you but 1st let's jump into some of the music from the Hotel Transylvania 3 summer vacation I feel like I. That was I see love by Jonas blue featuring this box of Jonas this there from the rave p.g. Movie Hotel channel the 3 summer vacation this tells the story of the family that you know and love from the previous films including Mavis her husband Johnny their son Dennis or to me said it as Dracula likes to say and guy who is me this is Father they and the gang from the hotel go on a summer vacation they go on a monster cruise the 1st monster cruise that has says sail and 1st back it was not excited because it's just a hotel. And so he doesn't feel like he's really going to be doing much different but then he meets. Erika that couldn't remember and he is the captain of the boat and he falls for her madly and he just loses all of his cool you know. A successful business owner. He loses all of that he have tar he's all the Google. So his vacation gets to be a little more interesting especially because the viewers know who Erica really is. She has a secret a deep dark secret and then they actually go to the Bermuda Triangle. That's where they go to. Board the vessel as an example here in Southern California if you want to go on the Caribbean cruise you don't. You don't go out of the Los Angeles port if you want to go to Alaska. But they call that Mexican Riviera or even just up the coast the Pacific Coast to Seattle or the long one which is what I want to do if we win the lottery is go on the Hawaii cruise takes like a week just to get to Hawaii but you have to board the vessel at some dock and the dock I love the airplane by the way the way they get there. Gram when the air is fantastic and what you think it would be. I guess monsters can survive plane crashes and they go to the Bermuda Triangle and you think oh what's happening and then they board a cruise ship it was like to say yes Miss Jennifer have you ever been on a cruise ship I haven't been to 3 to 3. To this to. This many cruises and do you think that there are giant hotels floating on the water. From people who are who I tend to see that I think you just. Because you don't really notice that you're on the water you don't know either you're moving right but it is a different sort of thing because I feel like when I go to a hotel I just go to sleep but when you're on a cruise ship there's so many things to do right by way or space I found it interesting we have been on a few cruises as a family and then my honeymoon was on a cruise and I find it interesting that the main people that you deal with are usually 5 star trained hoteliers or whatever hotel so the right word Hotel here is Ok not that they're wearing Mickey ears because we don't always go on the Disney cruise but the the bulk of the people who work in this current apartment or that desk there are hotel people they understand how to make hotel guest happy and so they have most of their training is and the hotel services business and then they end up on a cruise ship. Apparently they hire a lot of people from Europe like Sweden and France and our captain I think all 3 times on all of our cruises were was a Viking or Norwegian or whatever and so it was fun to watch these monsters on a cruise ship with the all you can eat buffet and the shuffle board and the pool no kid to pull the one this one. And we're talking about Hotel Transylvania 3 in theaters now rated p.g. And of course all of your favorite characters are back for this one Jennifer mentioned the family but then of course we have the friends like. Consigns monster and his wife Kevin James and friend pressure we've got David Spade as the invisible man we have Keegan Michael key as Murray in the money originally that was played by c. Lo Green but we're big fans of Keegan so. That's not a reason not to see it Miss Jennifer what he read it I did this movie a good solid 4 out of 5 and. I feel like I liked this one better than the 2nd one but not as much as the 1st one I don't really remember the 2nd one that much but I know it was about the grandpa Mel Brooks character and the son Dan s. There was a lot of talent that he became in that one he didn't see much what it really Brooks and this one however I give it. I'm going to give it a 4 and a quarter you can't do that why don't we used to not even allow. A quarter for me I give it a 4 again not as good as the 1st one or 2 but I would have no problem taking the bulk of my younger cousins to see it because overall we did have a good time moving on. That is in the name of love by Jacob banks from the rated r. Movie sequel the equalizer to starring tensile Washington. This movie it doesn't really pick up where the 1st one left off there was a there was a gap of about 4 years between these movies so we don't know if anything else happened in the interim but as you might recall Robert McCall in the 1st movie. Had a background in CIA CIA. Special ops and he was trying to he had given up that business his wife had recently passed away had given up that business and he was leading an unassuming life. Until he came across people who needed his help and then he helped them in ways that allowed him to use his training because obviously he had all these skills where he was able to fight people and if you're always or if you're older like me there was a show called The 18 back on t.v. In the eighty's. And I don't know I was 80 it's not the ninety's 18 and what they would do is they were basically 0 and if you watch Deadpool the beginning of Deadpool before he goes and gets. Adjusted by the X.-Men team he was a. Martian helper he was a hired helper and when I say helper I mean go after the thugs go after the boyfriends that are stalking you go after so it's kind of like the a team or you could go to the website and say hey I need help Kim Possible is even where people would say I need your help and then you this person would go and help him and at the end of the 1st movie if you recall he was on a website and he said yes I can help you and we don't know it could have been the lady with the problem that she had in Berlin Well I got the impression that she didn't know that he was helping and they kind of indicated that in the movie that he knew her and he found out about her problem and then he chose to go and help her surreptitiously so she was not aware of what was going on and he wanted to keep that a secret but this was very different than the previous one the previous one I felt like he was home a little bit more he didn't go international this one he kind of did the International Spy kind of thing to help solve a couple problems the previous movie he was more at home you know we were talking to. Congressman thank you Moritz is a character and there's some of that in this one where he has a young man who is trying to figure out what his future is going to be and he really only sees working on the streets you know doing crime to. He has only future but he's apparently a talented artist and of course. Denzel Washington's character wants to make sure that he gets that we're talking about the equalizer to rated r. In theaters now you know he definitely has that kind of mentor thing about him we saw that in the 1st one with somebody he worked with and he does that with I think his name is Miles in this movie and but some bad things happen to some people close to him and. A person who is one of the few who knows that he's still around because when he left the CIA He faked his own death and so she I don't know the not but he didn't die everybody thought he died in the just that people believe that right and so there are very few people there's this one couple who know that he's still alive and they're there and he knows them from back in those days and she is very powerful retired but still acts as a consultant on cases and so Bad things happen and he gets involved in trying to figure out what happened and who was involved and you know what what all is going on and unfortunately he no he finds the connections involved in this case which I suspected at the beginning or somewhere in there and I thought don't don't let it be that don't don't let it be him and you know of course it was him. The person who was who was right there who was. It was an inside job kind of thing so it's like Colombo complicated if you have an I did have one are given a spoiler and she said I have a guest star in a movie and who they are not normally in the movie then there's probably something to do with them in it otherwise why would they have this. Character he's not just fluff he's not like Jack from on real who's just a pretty face we're talking about the equalizer to rated r. Starring Denzel Washington and I have to say there is a line in this movie which I don't know verbatim but I think it's really powerful and the 1st time I heard anything like it was from Magic Johnson Magic Johnson who used to play for the Lakers famous basketball player and he said there is you're in America now there's nothing holding you back but yourself it doesn't matter what color you are doesn't matter what religion you are doesn't matter how you identify you know from a reproductive perspective and no one's going to keep you down not the Asian people not the white people not the African American people not any Russians nobody other than you you make your own path and there's nothing stopping you in this country so stop blaming other people and stand up dust yourself off and be a man so he had There's a great scene there and it even gets a little bit scary because if that kid had even just the tiniest bit that would have been very messy Let's talk about the violence and who it's really a tough target it to. Who the film is turning it into I mean it's it's r. Rated so. You don't want kids seeing it because it is violent there is a lot of violence in here it's hand to hand combat and guns and you know what was really interesting about this one because you're not going to touch on a. Little tired today you know Ok lot of knife a lot of very close combat a lot of cutting with knives not as many guns this time seem to be more guns and some of the other movies especially like the purge and things like that but there was a c.b. a Little more personal this time some people say that knife attacks are more personal and there was a lot of that and you know the cutting of the legs and in the stomach and in the heart and in the neck and they I it's it's pretty graphic and so people that are sensitive to that or maybe have had to deal with gun or knife violence they may want to avoid this movie. I think that the premise is still good I don't know if we're going to get a trilogy out of this worked with the same director on this one as the 1st one so I think and he's worked on other films with him so the partnership may continue and we may see a 3rd film depending on how it does of course. There will always be. And I like the fact that he's a lift driver and he gets some of the cases that he takes on personally through his interactions with people he finds out about their lives and the things that are going on for them and how he figures out how he can help them and I really like that aspect of it I mean it is yes it is very violent he doesn't necessarily kill everyone in these cases Oh no he always that's part of his it's he always gives people the choice to do the right thing and then when they don't take them out but he does give people an opportunity to correct what he feels is their mistake but I don't believe in. And taking your own hands which in some cases he is the equalizer rated. Equalizer to rated r. What do you rate it. Rated 4 and a half. I'm going to give it a 4 I thought the 1st one was better but I still enjoyed the thing from here just sometimes think that. Violence is not necessary Still to come the swap and the Great Wall. Everybody Rachael Ray here nothing puts a bigger smile on my face and cooking up a big me all for family and friends but there's not enough room at my table for the 17000000 kids in America who are struggling with these children that's one out of every 5 often have to skip meals because there's just nothing to eat in the kitchen yet there's more than enough healthy nutritious food produced right here in America a dollar work party but you know I'd. Family dentistry for providing Jennifer's audio feed today we greatly appreciate it and this person on the show we will share with you the swap which was a Disney de com if they call it that anymore I don't know and the great wall rated p.g. 13 starring is that Matt Damon or the other one Matt Take All right so not Mark Wahlberg Here's a little bit of the soundtrack from the swap. That's to listen comes up by Drew Seeley feels very nostalgic the calm demeanor because if you're celiac you like to stay classy. That's the t.v. Genie rated. Which was originally aired on Disney Channel and Star is Peyton lists that you know from a couple different channel shows and in a little bit of a twist on the classic body swapping trope and in this lovely word trope Casey you know. Like the. In this one it's about a couple of high school students one is Ellie and she is a rhythm gymnastics. Girl and the other is Jack and Jack plays hockey he has brothers that are various Varsity for Morehouse were on recipe for hockey and their dad is the coach and they are. Have their cell phones on their cell phones are magical. They slid through bodies because of their cell phones and so this is happening at a very inopportune time because both of them have very important things going on with their sports and things going on in their lives Ellie is having difficulties with her best friend because a new girl moves to move to their town and her best friend is starting to hang out with that girl instead and Jack is trying to deal with his family and becoming a really good hockey player so that he can make the team without people thinking it's just because he's the coach so they're each stealing with the thing and they have to figure out how they can switch back before Ellie's phone contract is up. But I like the twist this twist on the body swapping trope. Oh I would like to define the word trope a figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression. A significant or reoccurring theme motif I got to look up motif. I like this because they have some similarities between them they're not they weren't friends before this but they did kind of know of each other and they have some family issues going on at the same time Ellie's dad left and she's dealing with that and chat mother passed away and he's dealing with that so they have they both have kind of a sadness that they've they've been dealing with and it's interesting yes it couldn't have been a Disney movie because the very 1st thing that you find out is that Jack's mother died you know on my call you know it's finding me Mo it's that in itself is a trope what they call it the most famous one ever been to me and then of course Cinderella to go live it with her step mom because her mom dies Snow White What is it what is it with Disney movies and the mom dying what's her face died and up even Yeah it's it's got to find a different story line. Anyway it's refreshing to that you have this whole sports element where they're there it's like a fish out of water thing because they each don't really understand the other sport and how to participate in it adjusting to be and being in a different body and that kind of thing so it adds comedic elements and I think it's a refreshing twist on the on the theme how did we get this well we got this because I actually d.v.r. It a long long time ago and we never got around to watching it and then Recently it became available on d.v.d. And you said oh that looks interesting and I thought aha we need to watch this because I want to see Peyton list in that movie that she did for you. Bread. Looks really interesting because this is not a comedy kind of it's a more serious role and I want to see how Peyton does Jennifer what do you rate it . I do want to say one thing is there are some interesting things about gender stereotypes in it some of it was not exactly as I would hope but they're worth good point though they tried a little bit. You know swap until completely different body that now I give a 3 and I give it a 4 I thought it was fun and I enjoyed watching it. I'll give it a 3 and a half as well I may have given it a little bit more but it got a little too campy for me at certain points moving on. Earth and. That is order by running. Djawadi I'm not sure if the d. Is pronounced or the j. Is pronounced I'm just going to go with that from the rated p.g. 13 movie The Great Wall 1st of all that movie came out in 2016 it is considered a fantasy mystery movie it's 2 hours. The Great Wall has many true stories and many legends and this one is based on the Legend of the. A total out Khalid Al tell. It cost $150000000.00 to make and they made. Over all after all of the time $340000000.00. So it wasn't like a John. Carter or you know people have said Man this is one of the worst movies in history it actually got like a 42. Voting on Rotten Tomatoes. So it could have been worse but tell us the premis Ok well it didn't hit the u.s. Market until early 2017 in February and they only made 45000000 here so I think a lot of the money came from China because this was a coproduction with China and it was filmed in China up until last week it was the most expensive movie ever shot in China but China towards women just to listen real fast last week China released a brand new movie. And it did so badly on opening day that the people took it out of the theaters and apologized and it was very expensive to make you know I'll send you the article Ok interesting. Well as you know Chinese filmmakers have been have become very involved in u.s. Films there are a lot of co-productions going on if you watch the title cards at the beginning of movies you see a lot of Chinese companies involved in almost all the major studio productions but this one was actually made in China and they act they filmed almost the entire thing in China I find it interesting that you know the a lot of the companies are kind of controlled by the Chinese government and I found it interesting they weren't allowed to shoot anywhere near of the Great Wall of China they had to build their own wall and their own sets and so they didn't get to really use any of the of the real thing well I'm going to hazard a guess that part of the reason for that is that a lot of portions of the great wall are and disrepair and they don't want to that to be seen and then they also this is exactly a great idea parts in New Mexico were just not good especially in the tribal land areas and so they let the partner with certain production companies and they say we will build. Hold our sets and we'll build new houses as part of our sets and we'll leave them here they could have fixed a whole section of the wall and maybe China would have been happy that this portion of the wall that's in disrepair as you say is now nice and shiny Can you imagine how much more this movie would have cost though if they had to repair it make repairs so the great wall you don't think so would have been the same because in I don't know exactly when the Great Wall was built but this movie takes place in like 1800 so tell us about the magical fanciful touting Alles I don't know tell. Tell tell. Us all why is he there and why is he got back set Ok So Matt Damon plays William so we have her find out his last will he plays William and he and some other Europeans are in China. To find black powder and take it back to wherever they're hired they're kind of like mercenaries they're hired to go in and get the black powder and bring it back to Europe and we his band of people gets kind of cut down because they're. They're trying to get caught and they're also fighting against other people who want the same thing so there's bands of people who are trying to get in and of course you have to get past the wall and all this stuff and so it's left to Matt Damon who seems like he might be Irish with his accent that kind of comes and goes movie I don't know if you notice that like sometimes he has this accent sometimes he doesn't. And his friend Tovar who is played by picture of Pascal and I think he's representing a Spaniard if he's a co European So they are all that's left to their band of people and they get caught. But not before they get caught they actually kill this creature that tries to attack them and that helps them because the Chinese people who are in the armies that are in charge of guarding the country who are stationed on the wall are very interested in the fact that they were able to kill this piece which is. Very difficult to kill so they are actually accepted by the Chinese people to help them figure out how to overcome these beasts and we learned that the beasts are there a lot of them and they are trying to get over the wall. And these beasts are their kind of reptilian or like dinosaurs or something they've got a lot of scales and big teeth and they have kind of. Hives mentality or. Are or trolled entirely by the Queen the Queen sends out the message and tells her warriors what to do and very easy just like at one dog become to look like dogs in a way but they have like no I mean no skin they're greenish they have monster teeth but the weird thing is their eyeballs are on their shoulders and apparently that's a weak spot for them and it's very interesting to see the way that they communicate and they seem to learn. Strategies and how to defeat the people apparently whether it is 60 years the Chinese government has to deal with this infestation of the Queen's warriors and the queen and what they have learned is that they have to feed every 60 years they feed and by eating people basically and then they give that food to the Queen that allows allows the Queen to reproduce and create new ones so every 60 years it's kind of like locusts you know every so many years you get this nasty set of locusts or if you're in Australia they've got that weird mass migration of rodents and if you're in that other country got that mass migration of craps remember that with the crabs Yeah. And so this is a primarily Chinese cast and you see a lot of warriors and one of the the lead warriors is a female which is very interesting to see. They have different specialties of the weapons and the way that they fight either hand to hand or the crane fighters are the women who basically jump off the wall. On long ropes with. Spears to stab. The creatures and so it's I thought it was an interesting historical by it's supposed to be one of the reasons that the wall was built that's the legend behind you know why the wall was built and I found it to be very entertaining and. And interesting and I give it a 4. For now I thought it was again I was expecting it to be horrible like. That movie that John Travolta did with the aliens you know people really. Really kind of in the room people thought oh the why are people beating up this movie is so bad it was 2 hours long so if you got to be in the right mood to see it I will also give it a 4 Still to come on a smart movie show which. Has the favorite superhero and what's new on d.v.d. . He has turning in circles happy dance so common with this group and finally the loving face right just gets in there and while Nick's fantastic but really the best way to know an amazing shelter pet like Satchmo is to meet one was at the shelter pet project dot org Today adopt a book you buy that is from the Humane Society of United States in the outcome so. It's the smart movie show smart movie show My name is Max and Victoria and my name is Jennifer thank you so much for joining us to greatly appreciate it and this we told you last week that we were going to share with. Us a friend of mine over at Frontier compiled a list of America's favorite superhero female. By state but 1st let's get into D.V.D.'s and then we will share with you who has that which state has their favorite superhero and is it yours. Miss Jennifer will start on David. All right a couple of things that I think are good now 1st there is something that I thought was better I. I thought it was going to be but it was better than I thought it was going to be I went in and I thought it was going to be crappy movie it was a back Rathi is I love dogs made it p.g. 13 if you like dogs and Japanese then watch that movie and the other one for me to recommend to you is I feel pretty The Amy Schumer movie where he is suddenly very confident you. Know. Ok. There are some good weeks and there are some bad weeks and I was very pleased to see this week's there are a bunch in here that I thought were good I'm not recommending super trouper 2 because I didn't see the 1st one and I feel like I got gypped but I don't think I would have liked the equalizer to integers now radar for strong violence and language if I had not seen the 1st one I would not have really gotten it so this is one of those ones if you haven't seen Super Troopers one don't don't get the d.v.d. For Super Troopers 2 Truth or Dare scary movie. With an interesting little twist and I thought that was interesting other than I don't know why they went back to Mexico but apparently that's what they have to do to break things. And then from the way back way back. S. Lives in video tapes from the eighty's is now available on Blu ray and d.v.d. It's been remastered some extras. Ok I also want to make sure people who are aware that the equalizer the original one came out last week on 4 k. So that is that they'll avoid if you want in a brand new rendering if you want to see it before you go see the equalizer too since we don't think you would really appreciate the sequel if you had seen the original for this week and that one has Denzel. Will Eisner the original Ok now. So this week on d.v.d. D.v.d. Blu ray 3 d. And 4 k. Rampage starting to wane The Rock Johnson if you haven't had enough of him if you're going to see skyscraper and you still want more doing The Rock Johnson This is actually I enjoyed rampage more than skyscraper because he was light and it was yeah because he's an animal guy who doesn't like an animal guy I mean he's a family guy in skyscrapers so he's always got kind of that soft side to add to the muscles and the stunts he's able to bring Jim Manji because he was playing a 16 year old boy who now was super Alpha muscle man and he played out pretty well other than he didn't really do the shy boy girl part very well so my concern is that there's going to be between the Rock Johnson fatigue at the box office because if skyscraper doesn't do well then that he's got you know all these other things that are slated to come out he's going to be and the Jungle Cruise movie for Disney and things like that so I'm hoping that he'll be able to continue his momentum but I do recommend rampage I thought it was a fun movie and a great action or with some good heart our greatness Jennifer I want you to name 5 female superheroes to go. Wonderwoman Supergirl girl. Jessica Joan. And that lady from the event. But surname The lady I don't know what I want to Black Widow Scarlet Witch probably want it all right now Name a state somebody pick out a 4 and me all 4 now right California the list of female superheroes as voted on by people in California was Wonder Woman and we're just going to pick some random states and I thought Wonder Woman would be here a lot more often but I was surprised by some of these some of which I have never even heard of you pick a state. Alaska. Alaska Gina Gray from X.-Men I'm guessing that's from X.-Men but Jennifer another state New Mexico. It's a New Mexico they like Black Widow I have 2 questions and hopefully somebody can answer these for me because I don't know oh she hole was one of the ones I found to be humorous and that was the only one from South Dakota South Carolina and Wyoming sorry and Missouri home a serious Thank you but Wyoming picked Scarlet Witch she was from the Avenger movies but I do not know who this falconry. Is she's female for. And she was the female in the in the Thor Thor Ragnor arc remember she was the one who was hoax friend when he was. She was it was she was probably previously a warrior and then she left and she was kind of hide now with him and drinking a lot and gambling and Ok I didn't really know who she was and then Delaware is one of my new friends because there was who did they pick. The more I found Guardians of the galaxy that's right so who was your super hero pick. You can check it out we will put a link on the front page from our friends over at Frontier who created this list and we'll just give you a link over there so that you can see where your super hero landed some of them can fly some of them can't fly so there you go wondering other fun things to do in l.a. There soon may be something else to do when you visit Hollywood to see the Hollywood sign you may be able to take a tram an aerial tram up to the Hollywood sign Warner Brothers is pitching to the city of l.a. That they want to build this aerial tram and they want it apparently a lot of people have pitched this idea over the years because the residents who live in the area don't like it when people drive up there and park on their streets and hike up to where they can see the the sign maybe not all the way get to it because you're not allowed to climb around on it but they're hoping that this would do away with some of the traffic congestion and parking issues that happen when people try to visit the Hollywood sign so Warner Brothers apparently has the best plan so far on creating this because they have some they have the place that they want to put it they want it to start on there there are a lot. And it would get more people coming to the Warner Brothers lot where they have a tour and they can put some more attraction and charge money for people to come in and do these things so it would be a win win for them and for the city of l.a. If they decide to accept the proposal Yeah so Warner Brothers where Allen and a few friends and a few other things have been taped. Have been jealous envious of what's going on just 2 blocks from the Universal Studios and they say hey we've got sound stages and we've got historical places and some wonderful things that have been made so we want people to come to our tours and this may be one way to entice them to come and do it and if you're not sure what the Skyway is think of the old little pods that would go through the Matterhorn to Disneyland or if you ever go to Palm Springs they've got the little aerial it's basically a big metal box on a wire. They've been used in. And resorts Yeah but they've been used in James Bond movies several times and things like that.
