And welcome this is the bench Paresh I got a lot coming up for you this hour we're going to be talking about the 2020 Democrats Joe Biden may have a problem we're also going to be talking about comprehensive sex ed natural at the New York Times calling for all the talk about whether the data actually supports this sort of stuff we begin this hour however with a really tragic story there is a kid who I had the opportunity to interact with over at the University of Southern California that was Vic Victor McElheny. And I was only notified that that was the name of this kid because an iconic it was 21 years old because Victor McLean He was shot and killed in Los Angeles just a few days ago according to the San Francisco Chronicle the son of Oakland City Councilman Lynette Gibson McElhaney was fatally shot early Sunday in Los Angeles Victor McElheny an Oakland native was a student at the University of Southern California the avid runner and jazz musician had recently transferred to the university from Cal State East Bay Meckling 21. Apparently was the victim of an attempted robbery off campus l.a. Area media outlets reported that McElhaney was approached by several males at the corner of Maple Avenue and Adams Boulevard one of them shot McElhaney before the group fled in a vehicle a sergeant at the l.a.p.d. Newton station which responded to the incident declined to provide further details when that Gibson McElhaney called her son's death a senseless act of violence in a statement on Sunday he said Victor was a son of Oakland he was a musician who drew his inspiration from the beat soul and sound of the town he belongs in every nook and cranny of Oakland I miss my baby please keep me my family and all of my son's friends in your thoughts and prayers Alex Marchese was an aide to the councilwoman he says he was very talented very politically aware and awake and just a lovely kid local mayor Libby Sheff was a far left this obviously but apparently knew the council member and her son and our hearts grieve with the family and friends of council member Lynette Gibson Mechelle any the tragic death of her son Victor at the hands of violence is an unspeakable loss well lets leadership and passion focus on violence prevention as field wounds in our city and created new pathways for families all across Oakland our community sends love and warmth to Lynette at this difficult time University of Southern California released a statement on Sunday he said Mechlin his death will affect all of the faculty and students who knew him we appreciate the diligence and ongoing efforts of the l.a.p.d. To quickly identify and arrest those responsible for the senseless crime and extend our great sympathies to Victor's family and friends Now the reason I bring up bring up Victor McElheny is not just because it's a horrific act of evil and also a tragedy that he was shot but also because I had a brief interaction with Mechelle laning just a few months ago when I spoke at u.s.c. And he was well spoken and kind really a delightful person here's a little bit of the interaction that I had with him at u.s.c. . I so you have given a number of speeches about the difference between opportunity and outcome when you say that our country has no lack of opportunity correct equal access to rights I think I did better at the state Ok so equal and equal access to the exercise right so you're correct that I've said opportunity before it's not exactly not so I'm modifying it now Ok because when I say because of the because now it's a forecast where this conversation is going to go but but I have a feeling where you're going to go and correct me if I'm wrong I'll give you plenty of time is that where you going to say is that not everybody has equal opportunity which of course is true not everybody some people are rich some people are poor some people are smart some people are stupid but everyone does have equal access to rights. I write. Research now was really nice to have a command line is that the conversation continued from there and should go back and watch a conversation I had with him at u.s.c. This went on for somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes is really good natured he really came to ask questions and he came to give his opinion and we learn from each other and it was wonderful and so I think the world is going to be a lesser place for the loss of Victor McElheny it also speaks to the fact that every single murder is a tragedy every single murder is the loss of a human being and we tend to in the media pay attention to the ones that make the news the most so for example if if there is a black person who was shot by a white police officer they'll make national news because it's sort of indicative of a broader narrative we hear a lot about the broader narrative the narrative being that America is a racist place and that its police are in fact are effectively infused with racism across the board and so the media will report it will get months of coverage Victor Mechelen his death will not be reported by the media beyond the initial time period in which the death took place there are not going to be any follow up stories not to be a broad national conversation about his death because well it does fit a set of circumstances which is a crime happening in urban areas we're not going to pay attention to that because it doesn't fit the broader narrative that the media wishes to espouse and that's wrong because the fact is that more people like Victor McElheny are killed by people in attempted robberies as was in this case than are killed by police officers more people are killed on street corners than are killed by a random racist police officer but we don't pay attention to those stories we don't pay attention to those stories until there is some other inciting incident that tends to blow things up incident into the media's range of acceptable discourse. I mean for example look at the City of Baltimore so the city of Baltimore has been horribly run for legitimately decades I mean so horribly run at the entire series The Wire was made about how horribly run Baltimore was about the pathologies of crime and drugs that existed in the city of Baltimore and that series was considered politically incorrect for its time specifically because it did talk about all of those problems but it took until the killing of a guy named Freddy gray in Baltimore this person who was apparently violating the law police grabbed him they put him up on the streets they put him in the back of a van that improperly strapped him down and then he died in the back of the van there were riots in Baltimore and then the conversation was about how lack of attention to Baltimore is black population by police or by the authorities have led to racial unease in Baltimore despite the fact that Baltimore was had a majority black police force the police chief was black the mayor was black majority the city council was black there was a narrative that was being promoted and so then it was time to pay attention to Baltimore not when people were being killed on the street every day in Baltimore the same thing holds true in Chicago people don't pay attention to the innocent people who are being killed in Chicago legitimately every single weekend they only pay attention when there's a case like well look why McDonald's where the media can hang its hat on a broader narrative and that's a problem because the way the problems actually get solved is when we deal with the problems that affect more people not fewer people that doesn't mean that we should ignore problems of individual racist police officers of course we should pay attention to that when it occurs but our media is decision to pay attention to only the killings that fed a narrative and to ignore all of the other killings is seriously a problem and not only is it a problem it leads to more killings because we can't put our resources in the right places we can't actually create a system for dealing with evil among weak knowledge the evil that's taking place on a daily basis on our streets. We need more l.a.p.d. Officers in Los Angeles I'm from Los Angeles we do not have a major problem of racist police in Los Angeles if you want to talk about major problems we have with the police in l.a. 1st of all the p.d. Is I believe majority minority largely Hispanic but if we're going to talk about problems we have inside the l.a.p.d. We're not talking about 1901 major problems in the l.a.p.d. Right now they are severely understaffed they're significantly understaffed there are not enough members of the l.a.p.d. To help track down cases like this one they're not pull enough police officers in the areas directly around us which is located around South Central or South l.a. In order for the crime to be stopped we need we need more people with badges we need more people with uniforms in these places we need more work with the local communities because otherwise there are innocent people good people who are being killed and if they don't fit the narrative again they won't be covered in the York Times The only reason the Victor McElheny was even covered presumably in the l.a. Times and The New York Times is because his mom was a politician in Oakland but if he had if not then Victor McElheny would have been north presumably by the media he said there's a story today in The New York Times about Baltimore called The Tragedy of Baltimore and again they invoke Freddie Gray here is here is what they say the under headline is since Freddie Gray's death in 2015 violent crime has spiked to levels unseen for a quarter century inside the crack up of an American city there are $309.00 homicide victims in Baltimore last year Freddy Gray was not one of the homicide victims that represents the typical homicide victim in Baltimore he died in the back of a police them the real problem of murder in Baltimore is a problem of lack of police resources not Freddy gray being killed in the back of a police van by accident which is what the coroner's report actually suggested. The media are immediately invoking Freddie Gray as those some sort of important button on the on the timeline it is not it was not important site on the timeline every death is important but it is not a turning point nor is it indicative of broader trends in Baltimore the broader trends in Baltimore or innocent people being killed on the streets every day by criminals in Baltimore it's it's it's inexcusable that the media refuse to cover crimes that don't fit their narrative and refuse to cover them with the sort of national concerted attention that they deserve gets more of that in just one second 1st let's talk about your legal services there are 5 things business owners can count on from legals and number one reliability over 2000000 people have used Legal Zoom to start their businesses l.l.c. Escorts nonprofits and more you can use Legal Zoom to get started the right way number 2 experience they've been helping all types of business owners for over 17 years you can count on Legal Zoom to help with all the details number 3 helpful support and the right people standing by ready for questions all based in the United States number for legal advice legal team is not a law firm but they have a network of Independence attorneys licensed in all 50 states they can review contracts they can help with employment laws they can advise you on many of the hurdles that pop up when you're running a business and finally number 5 no surprises legals and provides complete transparency with upfront pricing customer reviews and satisfaction guarantee check out legals and today to see how they can make life better for you and your business and don't forget to answer Shapiro a check out to save even more Legal Zoom is for life meets legal Legal Zoom dot com I love legals amusing legals and for years long before they were an advertiser on the program I was just a lawyer looking for legal documents Legal Zoom is where you can get a Legal Zoom dot com Go check out all their services and use code Shapiro at checkout to save even more so back to the New York Times article they talk about the murder epidemic in Baltimore but even that is framed in terms of a person who is killed in police custody the actual text of the article is much less about that they talk about they talk about the problems in Baltimore in the context of crime. Here's what The New York Times says in Baltimore you can tell a lot about the politics of the person you're talking to by the word here she uses to describe the events of April 27th 2015 some people and most media outlets call them riots some the unrest that I was among those would always refer to them as the uprising the word that connotes something justifiable and positive the 1st step however to mulch was sort of freer and fairer city policing in Baltimore guy and many other residents believe was broken with officers serving as an occupying army in enemy territory harassing African-American residents without cause breeding distrust and hostility in 2016 the u.s. D.o.j. Civil Rights Division under Barack Obama released a report accusing the city's p.d. Of racial discrimination and excessive force the city agreed on a consensus decree but in the years that followed and here is the point because again the media only covered the flashpoints in the years that followed Baltimore by most standards became a worst place in 2017 a reported $342.00 murders its highest per capita rate ever more than double Chicago's far higher than any other city of 500000 or more residents and astonishingly a larger absolute number of killings than in New York City 14 times as populous other elected officials from the governor to the mayor to the state's attorney struggle to respond to the rising disorder leaving residents of the unsettled feeling that no one was in charge with every passing year was getting harder to see what gains exactly were delivered by the uprising one night last October after a guy and her husband Damon had gone to bed Damon's brother parked on the bedroom and banged on the bedroom door Jojo get up he shouted it was around 11 30 pm Damon's 21 year old son Damon Jr who had helped raise would ordinarily have been home by then after the bus ride across town from his evening shift working as a supply coordinator at Johns Hopkins but he was nowhere to be seen him and seen a rush to the door and asked what was going on James been shot his brother said again all of these tragedies require serious talk about solutions not just half of . Coverage of supposin racism being the chief problem in places like Baltimore we'll get to more of this in just one second 1st let's talk about costly car repairs when it comes to costly car pairs you need options instead you're often stuck bargain hunting for the best deal because you can actually afford to fork over a $1000.00 for a repair I mean how many times have you owned 'd a car yet in a fender bender and then it turns out to cost more to fix the car than it would be to just trash it you can't put a price on your family's safety and security on the road and that's why you should have extended vehicle protection from car show members of my family do car show makes the process of fixing your car for a cover repair incredibly easy you can have your favorite mechanic or dealership do the work it is indeed your choice they also provide 247 roadside assistance and a rental car while yours is being fixed for free if your car has 5150000 miles that doesn't mean you have to pay high repair bills car shield administrators have paid out close to $2000000000.00 in claims they're ready to help you right now save yourself thousands in future car repairs get covered by the ultimate in extended vehicle protection the same way that my family has 800 car 6000 mentioned Shapiro or visit car she'll dot com and use code Shapiro to save 10 percent that's car she'll dot com code Shapiro or call 800 car 6000 and mention coach Shapiro a deductible they apply That's 800 cars 6000 all right in just a 2nd we're going to talk more about narratives the media chooses to ignore when it comes to crime and which media which narratives the media choose to cover it's quite fascinating and telling this is the bench here. Welcome back this is the bench players you were talking about crime stories the media choose to focus on and which ones they don't so you all remember that we covered heavily the Baltimore riots that occurred in 2015 after the death of Freddie Gray and the media helps make those riots happen by covering the Friday gray death as though it was clearly a murder by racist police the same thing happened in Ferguson Missouri after Michael Brown was killed by a police officer the media tried to cover it as those a racist shooting the media did the same thing with George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin despite the fact that the d.o.j. Could not prosecute on the basis of evidence George Zimmerman suggesting that it was some sort of hate crime the media have an interest in pushing forward this notion that the real problem in America the deep seated problem in America is racism the deep seated problem for most Americans are living in crime ridden communities is not racism it is crime and most of the crime that is happening in places like Baltimore or places like Los Angeles or happening in Chicago in those places where the black community is victimized that crime is not happening because of the police it's happening because the police aren't there was a piece in New York Times magazine called The Tragedy of Baltimore discussing the city of Baltimore which for the record has been dominated by Democrat politicians for the last 6 decades which is to say perhaps their solutions aren't working particularly well here's what The New York Times says until 2050. Baltimore seems to be enjoying its own more modest version of an upswing that is often lumped in with Rust Belt economic casualties like Cleveland St Louis and Detroit also more in fact fared better than these post-industrial peers because of the Johns Hopkins biomedical empire the city's busy port and its proximity to Washington Metro Baltimore enjoyed higher levels of wealth and income than many former manufacturing hubs the city still had its sales its blight suburban flight segregation drugs racial inequality concentrated poverty but as recently as 2014 also more population which is 63 percent black was increasing up slightly 623000 after decades of decline office buildings downtown were being converted to apartments a new business and residential district was rising east of the Inner Harbor the city was even attracting those ultimate imprint tours of urban revival a couple of food halls and subsequent aggression has been swift and demoralizing redevelopment continues in some parts of town but nearly 4 years after Freddie Gray's death the surge in crime has once again become the context of daily life in the city as it was in the early 1990 s. I have grown accustomed says this columnist to scanning the briefs column in The Baltimore Sun in the morning for news of the latest homicides taking note of the location of the latest killings as I drive around town for my baseball coaching and volunteer and obligations in $27000.00 the church I attend started naming the victims of the violence at Sunday services and hanging a purple ribbon for each on a long cord outside by year's end the ribbons crowded for space like shirts on a tenement clothesline the violence in disorder affect broader setbacks gov Larry Hogan cancelled a $2900000000.00 rail transit line for West Baltimore defending the disinvestment in the troubled neighborhood partly by noting the state has spent $14000000.00 responding to the riots target closed its store in West Baltimore out of fears of crime the civic complex is frayed has so frayed that one acquaintance admitted to me recently he had stopped waiting at red lights when driving late at night why should he argued when he saw young men on dirt bikes flying through intersections Well police officers sat on cruisers doing nothing. And that is exactly the point when a community starts to disintegrate we actually have to look at the causes of the disintegration the media which is largely dominated by white folks largely done by white liberal folks who see racism as the chief Illinois Merican society are likely to hit every nail with that hammer but sometimes the nail that needs to be nailed this hammer is not appropriate for it sometimes the problems are not caused by racism sometimes the problems are caused by social decay by lack of fathers in the neighborhood by lack of police to make sure that innocent people are protected by lack of income that comes into a community when law abiding people live there and when those law abiding people are allowed to flourish and prosper when the businesses are not under threat and want to rebuild places like Baltimore you need to make sure that crime is stopped New York City is a great example of this crime rates drop in New York City became a hub in the 1970 s. New York City was a trash heap this can happen in other cities but the reverse can happen too when we start focusing on the wrong narratives and a sensitivity to political correctness or more to support broader narratives about what America is the people who really get hurt are people like the young man who's asking the questions at u.s.c. Oh he was doing was going to college and walking around his neighborhood and he was shot by thugs who shot by criminals that guy paid the price that young man paid the price for bad policy and people will continue to pay the price for a media and a politics that continues to ignore the real serious problems in American society in favor of those that most fit a story that is that is both sellable and Sexy we see this in New York City by the way increasingly when it comes to the targeting of Jews I saw a video just last night of a Jewish mother walking down the street so she was Jewish because of the way she's dressed is walking down the strange pushing a baby carriage and a young person of minority status apparently comes out of the it comes down the other side of the street and kicks the stroller and kicks the stroller it's a stroller with a baby in it. If this kind of stuff is more of a threat to the everyday lives of people then is vague talk about police racism I'll tell you what that no mother could have used a police officer right there doing something about it the people who aren't forcing our laws and making sure folks are safe those people cannot be treated as the enemy a must they are actually acting as an enemy and the media has attempts to draw a line between law enforcement communities and suggest that law enforcement is the problem it's just it's just wrong it's just silly and it's wrong and it's and it's foolish and it's backward and innocent people get hurt. Ok Coming up we're going to talk about the 2020 Democratic candidates also a shocking story of prominent actors in Africa is getting caught up in a in a ring to somehow have their children admitted to a high ranking college is the bench here as. 50 people including Hollywood actresses and college coaches are accused of taking part in a scheme to enable wealthy parents to get their kids into top universities correspondent Erica Hill reports a ring layer is cooperating with prosecutors and the man behind this is William Rex singer who today pleaded guilty to racketeering money laundering conspiracy and obstruction of justice he ran both a college consulting business and also a fake foundation more than 40 countries have grounded the Boeing $737.00 Max a doctors involved in the 2nd deadly crash correspondent Martin Savidge says agenda still aloft here in the u.s. Runners right now one of that I think is there are one of them I think is not according to Fox News for Vice President Joe Biden remains on top of the polls in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination including a new national survey released on Monday from Monmouth University the regular behind him Senator Bernie Sanders it's no surprise that the 70 sick. Biden and the 77 year old Sanders are ahead of the rest of the field of ever expanding Democratic White House hopefuls which right now stands at 14 it illustrates that polling in the 2020 race is being dominated by name recognition Biden and sanders are of course the most well known candidates at this point the latest Monmouth poll puts Biden at 28 percent followed by Bernie Sanders at 25 percent Kamel Harris is at 10 percent Elizabeth Warren is it 8 percent Beda O'Rourke ran against Ted Cruz and lost is now at 6 percent only 5 for a book or 3 for Amy Klobuchar. Of Minnesota and Kirsten Gillibrand stands it less than 0 meaning the people have not yet been born who oppose Kirsten Gillibrand is a similar story in Iowa Biden is still on top at 27 percent Sanders at 25 percent but here's the thing Biden is the most likely to drop because Biden will be savaged number one he's the front runner being the front runner means you get Savage Number 2 Biden also is most vulnerable to critiques from the progressive wing as well as from the intersectional wing polls indicate that Biden has a 15 point lead over over Sanders among voters 45 and older Sanders holds a 9 point advantage among younger voters there is one exception so far to the Biden Sanders pecking order in New Hampshire Bernie is actually winning so there is a solid shot based on these polls that you could see Bernie at least run Iowa and New Hampshire then we go down south and that's where presumably as as the percentage of the voter base gets more minority and minorities tend to vote as a bloc in Democratic primaries which is why Barack Obama was the nominee in 2008 and not Hillary Clinton that's where you would see coming Harris really staking her claim the same polls by the way show that that President Trump still is popular in Iowa but 40 percent of likely Iowa Republicans say that they hope that trump faces some sort of internal challenge that is unlikely to happen. Joe Biden remains highly vulnerable he remains highly vulnerable and Sanders is actually drawing a shocking amount of support from the mainstream Democratic establishment according to Politico the last time Bernie Sanders ran for president he was treated like a pariah within the Senate Democratic Caucus his colleagues thought his campaign was a liberal fantasy that served only to damage Hillary Clinton this time however the Vermont Independent is getting a warm reception from senators who constitute much of the Democratic establishment that he's railed against Senate Democrats say they're open to getting behind standers if he appears to be the strongest candidate a year from now most of the members prefer somebody else but if it's Sanders they'll jump behind him Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois who backed Hillary said he's off to a solid So he's off to a solid start I know Bernie I've worked with Bernie I understand burning if you're asking me about Bernie Sanders versus Donald Trump no problem Pat Leahy of Vermont backs Clinton early on in 2016 but now is indorsing Sanders and Sanders has been a lot nicer to the party he's signed boils the pledge with the d.n.c. Has said he will not go negative in the primary and honestly there's no reason for him to do so at this point all the other Democrats are essentially mirroring what Bernie Sanders says and in fact Democrats who don't know what Bernie Sanders says are being castigated as as outcasts and fools 1st among those Nancy Pelosi who suddenly has emerged as the moderate in the Democratic coalition when Nancy Pelosi is your moderates and your best example of moderate is a San Francisco Democrat a far left San Francisco Democrat who was the most left leaning member of Congress about 10 years ago when that's her moderate you can tell the entire party has lost its moorings not only did she say yesterday that she doesn't think the president from who end up being impeached she was asked about Medicare for all and here's what she said in Rolling Stone. She said when they said Medicare for all people have to understand Medicare for All is not as good a benefit as the Affordable Care Act It doesn't have catastrophic coverage you have to go buy it it doesn't have dental it's not as good as the plans you can buy under the Affordable Care Act So I say to them come in with your ideas but understand we're either going to have to improve Medicare or else people are not going to get what they think they're going to get and by the way how it's going to be paid for now single payer is a different thing people use the terms interchangeably sometimes it could be the same thing but not always single payer is just about who pays it's not about what the benefits are to convert it would cost $30.00 trillion dollars How do you pay for that you don't get there by dismantling the Affordable Care Act So Nancy Pelosi is already throwing cold water on Bernie Sanders and for her trouble she is being destroyed for that other Democrats are being destroyed for seeming moderation as well Andrew Cuomo who again is so far left that just a couple of years ago he suggested every conservative in the state of New York should leave is now telling people that if single payer passes he's going to have to double everybody's taxes and he doesn't want to do it he was asked about single payer he said pass it all sign it but would he want to sign it no he said No sane person will pass it he said it will blow up the state budget will double everybody's taxes so the party's base has a complete disconnect which is why Bernie Sanders is on a solid path and Joe Biden is not Joe Biden at some point is going to speak truth to the power of his own base and people are going to get very very angry at him and be a serious problem for him many Democrats are acknowledging that Bernie Sanders is no longer an outcast in the party especially after Hillary Clinton's last Democrats according to one Democratic senator look at Bernie differently because he's not running against Hillary Clinton he's a major player in the party in a way he wasn't in 2016 he looked like a quixotic candidates it's not like people are sitting around thinking about how to keep the nomination from him this time. Sherrod Brown just pulled out of the presidential race in part because you saw the strength of Bernie Sanders Bernie owns that progressive wing of the party now there are other attempts by various Democrats to hone in on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party the chief person trying to rival Bernie in this area is of course Elizabeth Warren Pocahontas the Native American princess now Elizabeth Warren I think she pulled what was a pretty solid stunt yesterday she tried to put ads on Facebook about breaking up Facebook and Facebook took down the ads and then Facebook had to replace the ads the ads touted at Warren's recently announced plan to unwind anti-competitive tech mergers including Facebook acquiring what's happened Instagram as I mentioned yesterday this is really dumb I'm not sure why Americans lives get better if whatsapp is not owned by Facebook but really I use whatsapp on a fairly regular basis we use Instagram I have no idea why the world has changed in any market way because Facebook owns what's app or Instagram why the world is worse the ad say 3 companies have vast power over our economy and our democracy Facebook Amazon and Google we all use them but in their rise to power they bulldoze competition used our private information for profit and tilted the playing field in their favor now if she's talking about the threats of corporatism the answer is to limit that from the government side the answer is not to go after corporations which after all are profit seeking and are happy to use the government as their tool it's always been will do me that the Occupy Wall Street movement decided to occupy Wall Street as opposed to occupying k. Street why wasn't the Occupy k. Street movement why weren't they occupying the lobbyist's why weren't they occupying members of government why weren't they on the Mall in Washington d.c. Yelling at their legislators after all legislators are elected members of Wall Street are simply working for corporations that are profit seeking nonetheless Elizabeth Warren is trying to tap into populist outrage against these major tech companies and believe me as you'll see we'll talk about in a minute. The fact is I'm not super pro a lot of tech companies are run I don't like the non-transparency of Facebook I don't like that Twitter is not transparent about whom it censors I don't like that You Tube is not transparent about who gets knocked by You Tube who gets to monetize by You Tube I think it's really bad but I'm not sure why the solution to break up these companies Facebook took down the ad a message on the 3 ads had the sad was taken down because it goes against Facebook's advertising policies affect Facebook spokesperson confirmed the ads have been taken down but said that the company was in the process of restoring them and said we remove the ads because they violated our policies against the use of a corporate logo in the interest of allowing robust debate we're restoring the ads and then that level is with Lawrence tweet curious why I think Facebook has too much power let's start with their ability to shut down a debate of whether Facebook has too much power thanks for storing my posts but I want to social media marketplace that isn't dominated by a single censor weird because I don't see Democrats complaining too much about the media landscape being dominated by a few key players who happen to side with Democrats so Elizabeth Warren trying to outflank Bernie but I don't think she's going to be able to realistically speaking Bernie will have an easier time nearing the list with Warren and Elizabeth Warren will have an easy time mirroring Bernie Sanders and his appeal. Meanwhile there's some other problems for some other candidates in the race we'll get to them in just one second 1st let us talk about the underwear that are currently gracing its office when men and women upgrade from their shabby outdated multi-pack underwear to Tommy John the most comfortable on the planet have a lot to say about it John says his only regret is that he didn't try Tommy John earlier Julia says Tommy John is so comfortable she forgets she's wearing them the point is men and women all across America are crazy about Tommy John Tommy guns men's and women's underwear sport to know what you guarantee comfortable stay put waistbands in a range of fabrics that are luxuriously soft and designed to move with you not against you Plus how much on his dress shirts and understands that always to talk ridiculously soft lounge or go anywhere apparel that's versatile enough to go from boardroom to boxing class for ladies check out their new Tommy John era collection Tommy John is so sure going to love the fit and feel it's all backed by the best pair you'll ever wear or it's free guarantee that means if you don't love that 1st pair you get a full refund Tommy John No I just need to go to Tommy John dot com Right now use the code Ben for 20 percent off your 1st order that is code for 20 percent off only at Tommy John dot com Again that is Tommy John dot com I'm contact com It's fantastic fantastic stuff and I love my tommy john underwear and you will too and when you use code than you get 20 percent off your 1st order go check it out right now well Kamel Harris is it looked as though she was launching strong and she struggled to break free from the rest of the crowd she's pulling about the same as Elizabeth Warren nationally she's not broken through in Iowa or New Hampshire and she's basically making intersectional appeal she essentially saying I have a better view on race than anybody else and she is trying to turn that intersectional base against Bernie center she's trying to suggest that Bernie doesn't have enough connections inside the black community to truly understand the problems of the black community whereas she Kamel Harris has those connections she said listen we haven't had discussions on race which is which comes a shock to me since it seems like every other discussion in this country is about issues of race. We have honest this is about race. You look at excellence if you look at it then if you read. Some history. The. Same history. What is she even talking about I mean that's that's that's completely insane our textbooks have a race to race in our in our like has you checked a textbook lately as to why if you go to college there's a better shot you're going to learn about the evils of slavery than that you're going to learn about anything having to do with the Bible or Aristotle it is not close by the way so it's just nonsense but of course she knows that all this really is an attempt to say I care more about issues of race than other people and that's why you want to vote for me she's trying to run the Barack Obama campaign in 2008 there's one problem for her Stacy Abrams the former failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate who also gave the response to the State of the Union Address is making sounds about running for president in 2020 herself Stacy Abrams a significantly more charismatic than Kamel Harris she has significantly more grassroots appeal than Kamel Harris who after all was a prosecutor she tweeted out in lead from the outside to explore how to be intentional about plans but flexible enough to adapt 20 years ago I never thought I'd be ready to run for president before 2028 a life comes at you fast as I shared in a q. And a with your me at South by Southwest now 2020 is definitely on the table come on Harris's hardest hit by that $538.00 has a breakdown of the various lanes of the Democratic Party various segments of the Democratic Party and come away Harris's heaviest rain the place where she's expected to do best is with black voters if she splits that lane with Cory Booker and Stacy Abrams all of whom are attempting to run in that lane who do you think wins the nomination for now are Jamie Sanders right now if you had to lay odds Bernie Sanders is the odds on favorite to be the Democratic nominee in 2020 which means open socialist open wound back socialist vacationed in the u.s.s.r. And stood up for Cuba against Donald Trump. It's more than coffee it's less than a cup. Welcome back this is the bench hero show so huge story breaking today the f.b.i. Is now accusing a bunch of celebrities of basically paying to get their kids into college and violating the law to do so according to The Washington Post the Justice Department on Tuesday charged more than 30 wealthy people including 2 t.v. Stars with being part of a long running scheme to bribe and cheat to get their kids into big name colleges and universities the alleged crimes included cheating on entrance exams as well as bribing college officials to say certain students were coming to compete on athletic teams when those students were not in fact athletes a criminal complaint paints an ugly picture of high powered individuals committing crimes to get their children into selective schools among those charged are actresses Felicity Huffman best known for the television show Desperate Housewives and Lori Loughlin who appeared on Full House according to court documents authorities said the crimes date back to 2011 the defendants used bribery and other forms of fraud to facilitate their children's admissions to numerous colleges and universities including Georgetown Yale Stanford University of Texas University of Southern California and u.c.l.a. Among others one of the cooperating witnesses according to court documents as a former head coach of the Yales women's soccer team who pled guilty in the case nearly a year ago and has been helping the f.b.i. Agents gather evidence ever since. Some of the $32.00 defendants are accused of bribing college entrance exam administrator to facilitate cheating on tests by having a smarter student take the test providing students with answers to exams or correcting their answers after they had completed the exams according to the criminal complaint others allegedly bribed University athletic coaches and administrators to designate applicants as purported athletic recruits regardless of their athletic abilities and in some cases even though they did not play the sport they were proportionally recruited to play thereby facilitating their admissions universities in place of more qualified applicants Morry Loughlin and her husband fashion designer most generally were accused of paying half a $1000000.00 in bribes so their 2 daughters would be designated as recruits for the u.s. Even though they were not part of the team that helped the pair get into u.s.c. 1st of all half a $1000000.00 to get to u.s.c. You are not getting your money's worth from us he's a fine school and Harvard some of the money was directed to Donna Hina a u.s.c. Athletics official and others to the foundation Yes he says that it is cooperating Huffman is accused of paying 15 grand disguised as a charitable donation to the key world wide foundation so her oldest daughter could participate in the scam a confidential informant told investigators he advised Huffman he could arrange for a 3rd party to correct her daughter's answers on the s.a.t. After she took it she ended up scoring 814-2400 points higher than she'd gotten on a p.s.a. Taken one year earlier according to court documents have been also contemplated running a similar scam help her younger daughter but of ultimately did not pursue it so a few things that ought to be noted about this Ok there are couple points that I have made in the past when it comes to college admissions one I do not believe in college athletics I know this is an unpopular viewpoint that a lot of people who love college football they love college basketball it is that time of the year for March Madness and all the rest I do not like college athletics if you want to have an amateur league have an amateur league the notion that you're going to recruit people who are not academically qualified to your university by saying they're part of the crew team is absurd. How's it deeply necessary for a university to have a crew team so much so that a simple a simple admission on the basis of crew would mean that you no longer have to score highly on your other tests. Are a way for the school to make money which is why I believe that student athletes should be paid but if we're going to do that then why not just make all of this professional you know what it is in the 1st place why are we bothering to pretend otherwise it's all silly towns that's number one number 2 I'm seeing some people say today that this is proof that test scores shouldn't be used in college admissions I don't see how this is proof of that at all what this says to me is that cheating should not be allowed on those tests I'll also say that I'd be curious to find out how many of these kids actually flown out of the colleges because if it turns out that none of them flunked out that this Felicity Huffman daughter who was scoring Michael Levin 100 on her S.A.T.'s maybe and then sort of 1420 and then she went to a top tier college if she did not flunk out what does that say about the colleges what does that say about whether these colleges ought to be treated as tiered Anyway if you can succeed at Yale the same way you can succeed in the juco and maybe Yale integrated place you know used to be for places like Harvard Law School where I went it was not be admission was not actually based on test scores the rule at Harvard Law for the century ago was that you could sign up no matter who you were and then you'd go to classes and then you would flunk out and that's how they we did people out and it seems to me there's something to that if you want to pay money and try out the classes and you can't hack it it's pretty good weeding system but as long as there are tests and scores those are going to be a better objective metric then this nonsense subjective essay writing garbage that we're talking about because here is the other reality of college admissions one of the things that happens in college admissions is people write essays that talk about their victimhood status and then they get in based on the victimhood status and not based on their actual scores. I'm old enough to remember when u.c.l.a. And the state of California had a policy when it came to admissions policy was that some percentage of the students had to be admitted soley based on g.p.a. And test scores and that was rejected as a possible s.b. One s.p. 2 policy was rejected in favor of a comprehensive approach why because it turns out the test scores in g.p.a. Were not allowing enough minority students so instead they changed up the math and they decided to allow subjective essays to be the great metric I don't see how that's any better the human element is what was wrong here it was not what was right here test scores are a good thing g.p.a. a Good thing standards a good thing people cheating the standards not such a good thing and by the way this holds true for parents who are dropping 20 grand to sponsor a building on campus to get their kid into bunch of garbage. People should be admitted based on their merits in a meritocracy the ocracy is a merit ocracy is not difficult coming up we're going to talk about the radical left rejecting the mainstream left pretty astonishing stuff plus we're going to get to President Trump running into some trouble with some members of his base because the Ventura.
