Is Alan Knuckman of trading advantage, one of our traders who noted it would be a big year for stocks. Alan, what was behind the big move . It was just a great year. For those that didnt fight the market i made a contrarian call last december when everybody was really negative just from the fact that everybody was overloaded in one direction. The market obviously goes the other way a lot of times and it was a great big year for a lot of bull participants. You also made some calls on individual stocks, starting with facebook. This was a stock that was basically left for dead. People were not loving this stock but you liked it. I really liked it from a riskreward standpoint. Thats how you have to look at the market. You have to look at itif you buy it what are you risking it to and what is the upside potential of that play . So facebook had been cut in half so there was limited risk on the downside. It wasnt going to go out of business in my estimation. We saw a big resurgence and also saw a similar thing in microsoft. Everybody looked at it as dead money. 30 was a real significant support level and it didnt look like it was going to explode as it did, but it had more upside than Downside Risk in the big picture. In my book, the microsoft call was especially difficult because this is a stock that over the past few years has not moved an ounce. Right. Thats what you have to look forthe non performers. Thats what you have to look for in 2014, because a lot of stocks have had big moves, but there are stocks that have pullbacks that look uglyabercrombie fitch, whole foods. Those are stocks that have had pullbacks that from a riskreward standpoint might be at a level to buy and lean on some support levels. Thank you for helping us out all year long, alan. It was also an impressive year for ipos. Popular restaurants and hot spots debuted stock in the market. And in some cases shares more than doubled in the opening day of trade including potbelly, the container store, and twitter. 2013 goes down in the books among the busiest for initial Public Offerings since the year 2000. And now, the show gears up with chuck coppolla taking us to the streets for some tasty american ingenuity. From coast to coast Street Vendors popped up with food a lacarte. You can count on a few things with food trucks. Youll never be asked, is it for here or to go . But Getting Started on the ground floor of this business does come at cost. Dan salls says most people will need about 60thousand dollars. For the truck, outfitting it for cooking and all of the permits. Not everyone can find an Ice Cream Truck for 45hundred dollars and convert it into a red salsa truck. But not everyone who does this began as a chef, either. I was a financial advisor. I was 24, but i wanted to give this a go. Jay and Carrie Sebastian got started for about 30thousand. Partly because the work of converting their small, electric truck into the bridgeport pasty pie wagon was kept in the family. I have a brotherinlaw whos a machinist and put in the oven. We did it over a long period of time. New food trucks can cost 75 thousand. Equipment and plumbing if youre converting oneup to 15thousand. Insurance can be 3thousand. Painta thousand or vinyl wrap ads to brand your truck5 thousand. Not counting food storage and prep facilities, youre talking serious money. But think of all that business, not to mention the coolness factor. I think theyre cool. Theyre different. Its cool that you can try these different trucks and follow them on twitter if you like them and keep following them. This is a a very good business. I love working with my wife. This is the best beyourown boss work, ive ever been in. Mobile cuisine magazine estimates there are about three million food trucks in the us. They face a variety of municipal regulations. But most flourish in large cities where there is a concentration of people but few choices to eat nearby. The term reshoring was more than a buzz word this year. While there still a long way to go with bringing jobs back to the u. S. Several corporations made moves to bring jobs back to american shores. Among them apple which is building a new mac computer in texas. Brooks brothers is now producing 70 of its suits in massachusets. The trend could continue as wages at factories in asia rapidly rise. Its the end of an era for general motors. The government has sold off its remaining majority stake in gm, marking the end of a dark time. As part of the 2008 bailout, the Treasury Department acquired a 60 stake in the company. The government took a tenanda half billion dollar hit from the bailout. Treasury officials contend the alternative of letting the carmaker go bankrupt would have had devastating consequences to the economy. When you think of renttoown, bigscreen tvs and leather couches might come to mind. But what about tires . Tire prices are at alltime highs. And consumers short on cash, are fueling this booming business. Jackie keenan reports from florida. When it came time for rebecca kelson to replace the tires on her mustang, she couldnt afford to pay full price. But she found rentaroll to keep her ride rolling. Shes been coming in every two weeks to pay her debt. I like the payment plans they have for you, its pretty reasonable. Kelson isnt the only one racing to rent n roll on payday. The renttoown industrys Fastest Growing segment is the tire and wheel business. Here consumers rent or buy a new set of tires and make small weekly payments. If they take too long to pay it off, customers can end up paying twice as much for the tires. You definitely pay more if you dont pay it off early. Ceo larry suttons business is booming. When he started his first rentnroll in 2000 70 percent was focused on flashy rims. Now tires make up half his business, and rent and roll is the 17th largest tire dealer in the country. With Household Income down five percent since 2009, and credit still hard to come by, the recession is playing the largest role in rent n rolls success. Sutton says his customers simply cant afford to shell out a large amount of cash for tires. But they still have a need to keep their cars safe. A lot of people that had the cash and were creditworthy, all of a sudden didnt have the cash, didnt have a job, but yet they still needed a decent set of tires. The economy is a big reason why this industry is booming. But its also been the cost of manufacturing tires. Gas prices, a worldwide rubber shortage, and tariffs on chinese tires all caused tire prices to jump by 70 percent within the last three years. The cost of Raw Materials is now going down, but manufacturers still havent lowered wholesale prices. All of a sudden a customer that could have bought tires for 300 all of a sudden it cost 550, so it got crazy. Sutton says about half his customers have trouble making payments, but hes rarely had to reposses. Kelson says she definitely doesnt want that and is dilligent about paying off her wheels. I try to pay more than what i owe every two weeks so i can hurry up and get it paid. For First Business news, im jackie keenan. The average renttoown tire dealer turned a revenue of more than 720,000 dollars. Rent n roll has 66 locations and 11 new franchises opening in the next 12 month. It was the year of baby talk. Bookies made a bundle of profits thanks to royal baby betting. Prince george created such buzz in the months and weeks that led up to his birth, it was described by one betting agency as the largest non sporting betting event in history. Who knew that raising your own chickens on your apartment rooftop or suburban backyard would be considered trendy . As ky sisson reports its a growing movement throughout the country, but the excitement of having a pet chicken may eventually become fowl. While raising your own chickens has the perks of plentiful, fresh eggs and maybe some pet companionship, many city dwellers are quickly discovering they are unable to afford, care for, and handle the barnyard birds messy nature. As a result, unwanted roosters and hens are being dumped at the nations shelters and animal sanctuaries at an alarming rate. There is such an overflow of roosters all over the country Alexandra Caswell says the Farm Sanctuary north of los angeles is at capacity with roosters and the organizations three locations across the country saw over 400 chickens last year, more than they have ever received. Part of the problem is when ordering chickens for personal use, most suppliers such as my pet chicken dot com, ship them through the us mailarriving alongside your cable bill and birthdays cards. The hens come artificially bredthats Food Industry speak for ready to lay eggs. This causes reproductive problems for the young chicks that prevent them from producing eggs after age two. Leaving many people at a loss for what to do when the eggs stop coming. Caswell says that when mail order chickens arrive at your door step, roosters are thrown into the mix as fillers, and because only the female chickens can lay eggs, people have no use for them. A lot of cities in los angeles are being approved for hens, but not roosters. So those roosters, they cant keep them and they being dumped at shelters or released out into the city. And this problem can only get worse as the trend continues to grow. Back yard chickens dot com is a website exclusively dedicated to the community of chicken owners. The site opened in 2007 with just 50 members and has grown to more than 200,000. Owner rob ludlow said in an email that there are many good reasons to own chickens including self sufficency and Sustainable Food grown humanely and believes that the trend has significant staying power. A lof of people are trying to avoid antibiotics, theyre trying to not give money to factory farms. But again, theyre affecting roosters by doing this. Cities nationwide have adopted ordinances that allow for small flocks of hens and caswell believes people will continue to raise their own chickens, but she wants to encourage proper training and adopting before buying. We recommend adopting chickens and roosters than ordering them through the main and that way they are getting adult animals rather than babies and know the sex of the animals. Reporting in los angeles for First Business news, im ky sisson. Information about adopting chickens and rescued farm animals is available at farm sancutary. Talking to veterans about the real issues theyre dealing with can be awkward and uncomfortable. We think to ourselves, i never served. How could i understand . Theyll talk about it when theyre ready. And then we wonder why they dont want to talk. But when their behavior changes, when they withdraw to themselves, increase substance use, or even talk about hurting themselves, its time to act. Because if we dont, our families and relationships will suffer. Ask the hard questions. Listen to the veterans in your life and show you care. Make the call. It matters. Its funny because ive been out talking about my book, dotcomplicated and i was like well, gosh isnt that the most dotcomplicated thing of all . President obamas relationship with technology right now. He actually played a role in you career. You were working at facebook and one of the highlighted moments is when the president had his town hall meeting through facebook, which was huge. It was really an amazing career highlight for me. To have the president feel that facebook was the best way to reach out to the entire american public. Its also the day you quit. Technically i didnt quit for a little while after that but that was the day that i realized this is the direction that content, that media are going in and i love facebook and i loved my time there but i want to be able to use all of the platforms that are out there. Serviceman in the movies, but for veterans like james crosby and so many other brave men and women, his service and his sacrifice for our country are real. Outside baghdad, a rocket attack blew up my humvee, killing one of my marines and leaving me paralyzed. [ben affleck] when james returned home, he, like many others, was in no condition to cope and advocate for the services he needed. Fortunately, paralyzed veterans of americas trained experts were there to help him so he could concentrate on getting well. For over sixty years, paralyzed veterans of america has worked to ensure that our injured veterans get the medical, housing and auto benefits they have earned. He was a bootlegger, he ordered all kinds of murders. But theres Something Else we can associate with chicago mobster al capone he was a pretty sharp businessman. Theres a fascinating new book on the man uncle al capone the untold story from inside his family written by his niece Deirdre Marie capone. Fascinating. You are just so full of stories about sitting on your uncles knee when you were about 5 or 6 years old. I used to touch his scar on his face and ask if it hurt. And i used to kiss it. And he died on your birthday. He died on my 7th birthday. January 25th, 1947. You make a case that maybe we need to reevaluate your uncle a little bit. Thats what im doing. Im writing another book. I wanted to make sure that i had hard evidence. All these other researchers that have written about my family forged a lot of documents to justify some of the opinions they have of my family. Making up facts because no ones going to hold them accountable. Thats correct. Let me ask you about this idea that he was a savvy businessman. I guess he would have to be considering the size of his enterprises. My grandfather was als older brother and Business Partner and he was pulic enemy number 3 behind your uncle. Correct. Public enemy number 3. My grandfather had one sonmy father. My father had one childme. And when my father took his own life, my grandfather took me under his wing and taught me everything about the business and how things were. He made me promise that i would not write the book until all the original family members had died. But one time he told me, because he really ran the operation, that he was running over 300 different establishments. Now, if you think about thathe didnt have a fax machine, a cellphone, or a computer. He may not have had a business license either for some of those. No business license but i know all the bills were paid and everybody got their paycheck. That to me is amazing. He had to have that level of organization or else this would have fallen apart. And your grandfather was the guy who was actually the operational head but it was your uncle who was the figure head. He loved being out in the crowd. Oh, he loved to be in the spotlight. He loved to be the big shot. My grandfather was pretty reclusive and he liked to stay in the background so he was the one that ran the business. Deirdre capone, thank you so much. Thank you very much bill. I enjoyed this. Thank you bill one trader spent 2013 outsmarting the hedge funds. We get a look at his trader playbook. Chart talk is next. Dell, herbalife, and jc penney were all victims of hedge funds this year but that did not stop traders such as andrew keene, president of keene on the market dot com. Welcome back to the show as always andrew. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Now, we did have these billionaire hedge funds moving stocks around. It was very difficult for the average trader or even the average investor. But you found some ways to out maneuver the Hedge Fund Guys. What have you been doing . Basically i watch something called unusual option activity. Every single stock has how many options it trades in a day. When calls are bought they are bought for one of two reasonsspeculation or a hedge. I try to combine the chart in my proprietary trading plan to make sure i want to take speculative bets and its been working out great this year. Do you think it will continue into next year with these Hedge Fund Guys . Absolutely. Lets be honest, the Hedge Fund Guys know more than us, theyre smarter than us, they have a team full of analysts with their mbas from chicago, northwestern, kellogg. So they have more information and knowledge than us. Why trade the stock and get 10 return on the stock when you can trade the option and get potentially 100, 200 or 500 percent returns. So i would watch this order flow all day long. I watched about 2000 trades going across the tape every single day. And then i personally allocate 610 trades of my own capital on these trades. Im very active. I trade almost 1000 options in a day and im trading unusual option activity. And you were able to beat the hedge funds. I had a great year this year. Ive been doing it since 2002 when i first started trading and this is what we did on the trading floor. We would watch order flow. We had a guy who used to come in apple and for 2 years he would sell put spreads at apple. So everytime this trader would sell put spreadswe dont know who the trader washe would sell 10,000 put spreads, but we knew it was time to get long. It paid out for years and years, so im just watching the order flow. Some stocks work better than other stocks and you gotta make sure thatfigure out if they have stock position on or not because youre never actually gonna know. Thank you for helping us to level the Playing Field all year long andrew. It was a pleasure. Thank you. And as we take off for today. We saved the best for last.
