Welcome to the town hall review brought to you by the Salem media group I'm Hugh Hewitt. Struck again on our southern border this time in the murder of one of America's finest we'll hear from u.s. Attorney General Jeff Sessions this problem has been brewing and getting worse parked on term we've had an almost doubling our own border patrol officers look at the challenge ahead on tax reform Ron Johnson from a scottie think this bill process that it's been muddied up as it been has it been clean with amendments have to be able to really be collaborative they also believe that at the end of the day this is a corporate tax and as we theer the sexual harassment issue comes to Congress Democrats normally animated by such charges are quick to excuse it heard like. Make fun of her. Hear that but. Thanks for joining us I'm Hugh Hewitt great to be with you last Sunday the life a border officer or Helio Martinez was cruelly taken in the Big Bend area of west Texas the 36 year old mightiness was just 4 years into his profession at a young family he was brutally beaten never to regain consciousness his companion opposite remains in critical condition u.s. Attorney General Jeff Sessions took time from his busy schedule to address the issue on the Mike Gallagher show Sam Malone of am 1070 the answer in Houston was sitting in for Mike some sort of ambush took place the f.b.i. Is I guess on the hunt for the killer still isn't really all Martinez was killed the line of duty well west Texas Culberson County Big Bend area and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this 36 year old man Kashif. To be out there it's very very dangerous and you know it's sad that our guys have to wear bulletproof vest our elected officials down there that is so true this problem and brewing and getting worse forced on time we've had an almost doubling. Assaults on border patrol officers last year and it's not acceptable are you shoot an all order early on. You know several months ago that directed our United States attorneys to pursue aggressively any assaults on our more patrol officers because it like you said they're out there by themselves often times or just one or 2 at a time and you never know what may be over the next hill so this is a very problematic thing they're courageous they're doing their work every day and yet the I believe as 10 people there yesterday working on this to support our friends that Homeland Security. In the Border Patrol officers in the Homeland Security investigators but we're taking this very seriously how can anything be the standard in this country we cannot allow this to the to or right for outstanding because you know when you're down there and you call for help it takes a long time in many cases to get County sheriffs or police or d.p.s. You know the troopers down there it's such a gigantic honker real estate it really is and you know a lot with made some real progress at the border illegal entries are down significantly I think we're catching a higher percentage than those who did enter it's important we send a message to the entire world this border is not open and we can do this. This is not impossible we're making progress already but we need to follow through on the president's directive the question for America and for Congress is this Do we want to complete the job compas started and in the illegality and create a lawful system of them aggression that serves the national interest I think that's what the American people rightly want. If you want to come to America a flat in wait your turn you don't get to come on lawfully and now we're seeing more violence and more criminality at the border today we're being flooded with the most dangerous drugs ever from Mexico the degree we've never seen the full. Heat storage and overdose Yes I think we're facing a real crisis it's time for us to take action and we're going to need some help from Congress the president is leading We stepped up our efforts on the homeland security is gone and Border Patrol and ice officers are excellent really are the asm level and effectiveness level and the same things still need to be done but another American judiciary front it is hard to believe that the special counsel Robert Mueller has been at work since last May His job to investigate the role that from campaign an alleged Russian election interference during the 2016 presidential election many revelations of service at that time some suggesting that the Clinton campaign was among the actual colluders and yet the Mauler same pushes forward relentlessly red waits former CIA analyst now at the Center for Security Policy provided an update on the Dennis Prager shout Rose tentative and trumpeted the answer in Pittsburgh was sitting in for Dennis if you don't mind just kind of giving us a quick review of where we are right now with the Mahler investigation Well I mean what I really appalled at is that there's compelling evidence that the Democrats are colluding with the Russians right and that they paid for this leak cache by paying a foreign intelligence officer to work with the Russians to smear Trump and that this this Da CIA was used to kick off f.b.i. Investigations and intelligence analysis this is turning in to be a major scandal that no one thought about just a few months ago I think the evidence is this man saying that the Democrats created this Russia collusion story the story that. Russia colluded with Trump to steal the election looks like this was fabricated and paid for by the Democrats. You know one of the things you wrote about recently was the protest a group I mean their c.e.o. Quit in the middle of the mall or investigation to start her own firm and will there be you know if there's just so many questions thank goodness there are so many other people that look like they could be implicated in rushing collusion and we're hoping that they will be investigated well. Tony Kadesh to have headed that the stick repeaters on his brother John Podesta headed the Clinton campaign now look it's well known in Washington that the last a group had been lobbying for the Russians so this is a uncomfortable connection that I think the Democrats want to run away from I actually know people who work for the protested group who are nervous that they've been doing lobbying for the Russians perfectly legal lobbying but they're worried that people are going to start looking into the work that way. You know. I mean what do you if you had to say to us I believe this is going to happen before the end of the year when the mall or investigation is concerned what would that be one of one or 2 things well I think may happen or may not happen before the end of the year you know that meeting between Donald Trump Jr and the Russians and that Russian Yannick Yes it's now turning out that fusion g.p.s. Met with that Russian attorney female tried before and after that Donald Trump Jr meeting I mean he did for a lot investigation like that one more running this this is a this is an alarm that I don't see how he can wish that the Democrats were paying fusion g.p.s. At the time and this memo I was a Democrat you pay for it looks like the Democrats are paying this entity to set up Donald Trump you know even though it may have momentarily taken a back seat to other crises the ambitious and challenging effort of Republicans towards tax reform continued I spoke with Robert because of the Washington Post earlier this week now if you heard me talking with Senator Toomey he was very candid about the consequences of the tax bill failure there that they come into 2 categories economic and political his assessment is like mine we could have an enormous market reaction to the collapse of the tax bill and politically it would be suicidal for Republicans is that opinion widely shared with in Republican circles. It is I think the big point he was trying to make in not as explicitly as I may get is if they don't get a corporate tax cut at the end of the day they don't get the corporate rate down to 20 even if it's delayed for a year if they don't get it down to 20 the markets are going to react and that's really what's going Republicans right now and when markets react lots of bad things happen chain reactions happen and chain reactions we saw in 2008 can be catastrophic So explain to me Ron Johnson and do you have any reporting on what the president and the senator from Wisconsin discussed Yes I mean the Ron Johnson from Wisconsin his concerns are what I was just talking about he thinks this bill's process has been muddied up as have been has I mean clean with amendments hasn't been able to really be collaborative on the Republican side he also believes at the end of the day this is a corporate tax cut and he comes out of the small business world Wisconsin and he thinks a lot of the deductions state state business is regional This is why on not getting protected here and so he's opposed to it I think it really underscores how the g.o.p. Generally sees these tax this tax plan as a pro growth bill because I think it's good job growth with the corporate tax rate coming down but a lot of businesses and Regional Chamber of Commerce to be a little wary of the I have a I have my own criticism of this bill because I don't think you should touch the state local tax deduction but at the end of the day there are 220 House Republicans in there 52 Senate Republicans they all have to realize that the best interest of the country is not served by destroying the Republican Party what part of that don't they get Robert Costa. They get it but this is like 10 parties within one and I'm just not ready to say they have a consensus to get this reconciled should they get extra to get through both chambers You've got a lot of wariness about the amount of this adds to the deficit that underscores everything here that even at the start of the conversations in these negotiations they're really not there skittish this is not really a conservative bill in the traditional sense even though it's progress in their mind are they might be skittish but are is there is anyone on clear on the concept the political road because they lose the house if they spend 2017 without doing anything and if this bill collapses even though they passed all the congressional. Acts that repeal regulations even though they've they've confirmed Justice course it's been a dozen great judges for courts of appeals the public will perceive it as a do nothing Congress are they are they not aware that Roberts. It's a complicated answer here because look think about this tax to be they want to delay the corporate tax cut they're trying to do different things to do a child tax credit they're trying to do different things to keep maybe some deductions in take some out what is it all tell you as a reporter tells me Republican Party is nervous about rising populism on both right and left and they don't want to be seen as Mr Chamber of Commerce they want to be seen as pro-business pro-business all the time so they're trying to show the base with this Obamacare mandate repeal that they're working for the conservative cause trying to pass a tax plan showing the workings of the conservative cause at the same time they are very nervous is not just the political rule and they don't pass it they're worried about does the common voter out there really want to tax cut in this way but I'm not so sure the Republican base voters are really is demanding this tax this is what I keep talking about I was if I was with a lot of members last night and I'm telling you they really wonder they know that donations will dry up but there they don't see a political storm even. The fact they think this is even if they fail in this would be horrible for them politically they'd be Obamacare failure was even worse to the base was clamoring for that they don't feel like the base is clamoring for a tax coming up. And you merely unless you have the curate alarm it's a horrible thing and it's also very rolling. Someone and now I think. And I think of that. Happening and I think anyone who doesn't give him the car imagine if that we're here for your mother or your daughter or you don't like America sexual shame pointed at a senator in the town hall review returned about it. This is Albert Mohler for townhall dot com As Americans celebrate Thanksgiving it's a good time to be reminded about the true history of the holiday perhaps we should not be surprised that in an increasingly secular America there's confusion about the origins of Thanksgiving some kids are now actually taught that the Pilgrims had a feast to thank the Indians afraid of appearing too religious some are now calling it turkey day as if all it comes down to is poultry the facts speak for themselves in 1621 the pilgrims celebrated what they called the goodness of God as they feasted with local Indians and 789 President Washington declared the 1st national day of Thanksgiving asking Americans to quote unite and most humbly offering our prayer and supplication to the Great Lord in ruler of nations into quote so much for a secular holiday these Americans knew to whom they were praying I'm Albert Mohler . Welcome back to town hall Revue on Hugh Hewitt would appear that America's fixation on human sexuality has taken a very dark turn that gets uglier by the week while Hollywood Prince Charlie Weinstein's alleged abuses may have opened the door accusation spread to the government from the government to the media and who knows where beyond the matter of former judgment Senate candidate one more is alleged past indiscretions have been dominating headlines until a week ago and then it was a harassment accusation against sitting u.s. Senator Al Franken in Minnesota and then a 2nd and then an accusation that the Washington press corps including among others the legendary Charlie Rose as expected Democrats are protecting their plank in Congress downplaying these accusations against Al Franken much like they have done for Bill Clinton over the decades I turn to Selena Zito of The Washington Examiner . The horrific news out there sexual assault across the United States. So let me you've been in journalism a long time did you have a made 2 story did I miss it I don't think you did you know it's out there you know especially a love and of a certain age things were a little different when I was younger and things are considered socially acceptable to do to women or at least socially acceptable not saying anything about it things happen and you just move on now Al Franken is getting a pass and I got into it with Howard Dean because he said Al Franken what he did it was a prank and they're trying to they're trying to keep it limited to the picture but in fact it was a 2 week systematic harassment of the women that were against it is that dances and a humiliation of her it's actually really horrific and he's getting a pass Yes thank you for pointing that out because they have like this ripple Can you imagine it's a curse of all that hit and she described in great detail and I thought she was incredibly courageous and Frank and the way that she did it but then that didn't stop he you know he made fun of her. He you know he was making pictures of her with horns on it and then like I mean it was just like a mental screw with her thing for the entire time she was there and that kind of behavior that doesn't leave you yeah I think that people are saying on the picture is a joke and he apologized for it are trying to minimize the Repugnant c. Of his conduct he ought to quit I come a great With you I think what he did to her was not only you know. The touching and the kissing and everything but the mental anguish that he put her through you know after he's been really amazing and humiliated unless you have felt. And that there is a warm it's a horrible thing and it's also very controlling. Someone and No Well I think it is awful and I think it's awful that he gets a pass and I think to anyone who does he have in the past imagine if that was your sister or your mother or your daughter or your wife it's a humiliation and clear and then they then they put the picture on the cd so it lives on forever and so Al Franken are discarded by that forever and. The courageous attempt of Republicans in Congress at reform in the counterproductive and downright ugly u.s. Tax system has many dimensions although it is potentially being prosperity and pretend about citizens and corporations it is proving to be an excruciating exercise my Salem colleague Michael Medved spoke recently about their brother President and c.e.o. Of the American Enterprise Institute you have been very involved and I know American Enterprise Institute has been helping to some extent with this effort at. Not to make our tax system perfect because that's not possible in this world but to make it better because you you agree that the current tax system is a ridiculous mess yeah it's a spoil system and it's just added one layer of regulation on top of another such that it's become so arcane and complicated I mean the best thing that they could do ideally would be to rip it up and start over again such that it would be simpler it would be fairer it wouldn't be a spoil system where you're trying to penalize your to give prizes to your friends and penalize your enemies and all that but failing that which politicians routinely do we could at least make a lot better than it currently is and most of our friends of the Hill are trying to do that Paul Ryan had been open in years past to actually sort of ripping the whole thing apart right starting over again but I guess with the Senate 5248 and pending an election coming up and Alabama. With a Senate that closely divided it's not really possible Yeah I've heard about that election Alabama's there is something going on there yeah yeah I mean the key thing for our listeners to understand about you know we hear a lot of the radio and we hear a lot in the in the conservative press about the fact that the Republicans in the Senate can't get anything done despite the fact they promised they would now 52 seats were the key thing to understand about that is a 52 seat majority is actually weaker than a 48 seat minority Why because a minority that with 48 seats votes as a bloc the 52 seat majority is fractious there's a lot of disagreement there's some moderates there are some libertarians there are people to the harder right than others and so the result is that if you're Mitch McConnell who's a very competent leader he's going to have a heck of a time actually getting people to vote together and that's the biggest problem they have on the tax reform and health care reform law and anything else they're going to try to get their minds around so we're going to see it's going to be like juggling flaming torches over the next couple of weeks if President Trump are to pick up the phone and say look what what should I do to make sure. Or that we get tax reform through and we get the kind of tax reform is actually going to help the American people and help our economy what should he say I mean what should a president yeah I mean in other words should he's been somewhat hands off right on the tax reform so far when to think yeah for sure and he was on the more or less on the health care reform to you know one thing to keep in mind I mean most of the people listening to us are conservatives as you and I are and we disagree vehemently with what President Obama was trying to do one thing that we should remember about President Obama he did exceptionally well skillfully was pushing through the much loathed the not regret it Obamacare formal Care Act He pushed that through with a ton of political capital he sacrificed 10 points of his own favor ability to get that thing through and I wish he hadn't I wish it had gone through a straight party line vote that had been a regular committee order and all that kind of stuff on it but but he did the work and President Trump hasn't pushed the legislation through in the same way that Obama did if President Trump wants this thing to go through he needs to actually kind of have a full court press not just on Twitter he needs to be calling senators into the White House and put his arm around him say I need you to do this this is very important to me to do the work and furthermore it is going to take a hit in the public opinion because as you and I are discussing before I went on the air now saying the fact that it's better to do this tax reform than did not do it is very unpopular with the American people will leadership means doing things that are necessary that are not popular yet and the guy in charge the c.e.o. The boss President Trump is going to it's got to lead the way on that if we want sustained growth and we care about the budget deficit and we care about debt for the future will have to be paid back barrack kids and grandkids which conservatives really used to care about we're going to have to take on these hard issues conservatives should not be afraid to do hard things but again what we want this thing is to be directionally correct and meaningful with with tax cuts for middle class people and for incentives to create jobs and opportunity and growth in America that's what we want while not socking it to entrepreneurs and people who. I have a real dedication to trying to be extremely successful we as conservatives should celebrate the fact that people want to be successful and not take away the money just because we can that's it that's a non conservative thing to do just quickly to take off in the remaining moments we have do the Republicans hold the House of Representatives or is that a toss up it's a toss up right now and it also means that there's about a 55 percent chance most of our political people think that they're really going to hold the House they can that that's the that's not a given they can bring it up they can bring that up to 75 percent they could take it down to 40 percent so the course of events will follow that but at current betting right now it's a little bit better than average or a little bit better than even odds are talking about coming up with. Welcome back to the town already has the podcast of our program at Townhall Review dot com I'm here at the holidays are here to help you thanks give me a minute time of family friends and above all great promise for. Also a fine time to see a great movie or to wonder. Throw it at me low budget unpretentious but at the theaters last weekend where the roar of approval I was fortunate to interview wonders writer director Steven on the Hugh Hewitt Show Michael Medved wrote a review of wonder your new movie which is so out there Michael is very spartan in his praise he just fell in love with wonders though her graduation the story of wonder and welcome even if you are the man and I assume you are. With the birth certificate. You know. Very. Little boy. A 10 year old boy Coleman who after born with the cranial facial difference no history to call it syndrome. After being homeschooled by his mom for 10 years goes to a mainstream school for the 1st time his life and it's about the ripple effect of that decision and that brave decision through you know sister and the community at its best friend and you name it it's just a really lovely story about courage and about hope even when I saw the trailer I thought I love kids I have 3 of my own I spent a lot of time in Children's Hospital in Orange County when I saw the trailer I didn't know if I could brace myself to see it because I knew the pain the kid was on undergo when he went to school but then Michael tells me it's the most wonderful movie and I've got the trailer I won't watch that I've got the movie but I won't watch it on a computer I think people need to see movies on the big screen and Michael just fell over anything in the bottom analysis is about friendship and family and did you did you set out to make that point 100 percent you know and I you know it's based on the book but our ship lost you know and like how you felt when I started reading the book I thought it was exactly as you said Oh it's very sad movie about this candidate and all the things that he goes through but like. As with the book the movie once it switches points of view to his sister and to the friend and to the sisters credit you realize it's about something so much bigger than just this one little boy story it's about kindness the impact of kindness it's about how if we just take that little extra moment to walk around in somebody else's shoes it makes all the difference it's coming out just on Thanksgiving weekend so it is a terrific time to get started on the holiday season by going to see wonder you're also well known for the perks of being a wallflower your career is very unusual and you end up is just the 1st film you've directed. Well this is the 3rd film I've directed but the 2nd studio film I will say though is the 1st film I've directed where I did not write the book that wrote the novel the perfectly lawful hour and I doubted it myself which is very unusual but this film Yeah this is my 1st time out of that comfort zone but it was a great experience and so when you when you doubt when you research this did you talk to a lot of families who have dealt with this situation of introducing a child with particular needs and it doesn't have to be physical disfigurement it can be also emotional disability it can be social instability it could be all sorts of different These spend a lot of time talking to families who have been down this road you know 100 percent I mean certainly the effect of my own family my wife's family and we had in terms of specifically to Collins or facial difference we had consultants we dealt with a couple of organizations including my faith and so yeah it was a very big part of you know obviously my research as an artist because I wanted to make sure that I paid its proper respect and so the organizations that deal with children who have facial deformity and they approve of the film at the end are they applauding that wonder 100 percent absolutely and that was our big you know that every filmmaker knows you know less than a week before release you're shaking your boot in terms of critics and you're hoping for the best. And breaks it but the number war and most important group that we had to please be on the fans of the book are the folks who deal with us every day and that they felt like we were celebrating their lives and not exploiting their lives and the fact that they've embraced it wholeheartedly has meant the world to us and to be teaching but not preachy I mean you're just going to demonstrate Michael very clear about this it just demonstrates the good ways to react to the people who have to carry special disabilities and the bad ways to react to it and the point of view of the family because in every family with a special needs child there's someone who is not getting as much. Tension of the ordinarily would get if everyone were just ordinary Right absolutely I think namely the most compelling story to a lot of. Not a dog story it's his or sister of the who loves her brother very very much very loyal to him but the all of it gone through. Neglect and is watching this very long suffering. Sister on the other end of the hallway very compelling. A bit of it played. A great job with it coming up Bobby Kennedy jumps into the race and now there are 2 opponents for l.b.j. From the left that's followed rather quickly in time by Martin Luther King's assassination 2 months later we have Bobby Kennedy's assassination I might when the California primary and seems perfectly positioned to go into Chicago and snatch that nomination playing with fire when the tar already returned in a moment. This is Jerry Boyer for townhall dot com The stock market had a great run after the election of Donald j. Trump us President this put egg on the face of many elite commentators who predicted that a Trump victory would be disastrous for the economy indicators of economic optimism also improved and some business activity indicators improved in response to that but lately plans for tax reform have been splintering into competing versions some g.o.p. Leaders seem willing to take on key issues such as whether to cut rates for the highest bracket and whether to delay corporate tax reductions in response markets have leveled off and there are some signs that growth is sagging too it is imperative that tax cuts be passed now and implemented immediately Republicans will get no credit from the electorate for bipartisanship if they sail into the next election with a weak economy on the horizon it doesn't need to be fancy but it needs to be soon we're past the time for rhetoric we need successful votes and tangible policy shifts. Otherwise the famed Trump trade may well be over I'm Jerry boy. The answer this is your one stop information station 965 f.m. . Welcome back to the town hall review I'm Hugh Hewitt if you were around in 1988 you would be justified in putting its memories out of your mind the time of great distress and uncertainty we had No I mean the assassination of j.f.k. Martin Luther King Robert Kennedy race riots across the land then came the 1968 presidential election Lawrence O'Donnell host of m s n b c s the last word is written a fascinating book Playing with fire the 1968 election and the transformation of American politics Donna was the guest of my colleague Michael Medved why it is the election of 168 particularly relevant to this moment in our history Well you know 3 years ago when I started seriously writing this book having thought about it for a while researcher for a while I believe that I was setting out to write about the most dramatic and chaotic and violent. Election campaign in American history most out of control and then what we had in 2016 was what people thought of as a chaotic campaign but really if you look at it if you just widen the frame and look at everyone involved every candidate it was an absolutely standard presidential campaign with the exception of one very eccentric candidate was something out of the movies out of a comedy you know the reality show star runs for president and some of us thought it was comedy at the beginning I certainly didn't take the Trump candidacy seriously until he got up to the front and the top of the polls in the Republican field and but but that was that was a fairly steady and calm election compared to 1968 where we had an insurgency from the left of the Democratic Party Senator Eugene McCarthy goes up to New Hampshire and runs against the incumbent president of. His own party this was a thing we'd never seen before people couldn't believe it was happening people expected Gene McCarthy's campaign to die in a snow bank in New Hampshire and instead he had this fantastic showing in New Hampshire which when I was in high school I thought he won it was one of those things he just 42 percent and he lost to Lyndon Johnson who won on a write in exactly Johnson wasn't even on the ballot because why would a President have to be on a primary ballot there wasn't supposed to be a primary for an incumbent president and so Bobby Kennedy jumps into the race another at 2 opponents for l.b.j. From the left and then l.b.j. Shocks the world by dropping out of the race. That followed rather quickly in time by Martin Luther King's assassination 2 months later we have Bobby Kennedy's assassination the night that he wins the California primary and seems perfectly positioned to go into Chicago and snatch that nomination the as you know the Democratic Party goes to Chicago they have the most violent. Convention in history both and I was there later in the hell with their loins and it was it was scary almost beyond belief I mean it was terrifying and. That and then what happened inside the hall where as you record in your book the book is called playing with fire now people need to remember this is the Democratic party right the Democratic Party which at the time is the ruling majority party Lyndon Johnson had won this incredible landslide victory he'd carried $45.00 states and he had 2 thirds of both houses of Congress and here's the Democratic Party with the mayor of Chicago the host of the convention yelling up an anti-Semitic slur to Senator Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut. Who is nominating George McGovern for president and criticizing a police response to the fighting and the bloodshed in the streets of Chicago. A lot of people who didn't live through this can't even imagine it no it's when you think about how calm our conventions are now just imagine just imagine one network correspondent or any reporter of any kind being knocked down being punched Mike Wallace from c.b.s. Gets punched in the face on the floor of the convention Dan Rather gets knocked to the floor while Walter Cronkite is trying to talk to his correspondents on the floor and this is all part of merit Daley's extra heavy security team that he has inside the convention hall if the Democrats had not had such a disastrous nightmarish science fiction kind of convention with literally blood flowing in the streets and pitched battles in Grant Park and elsewhere in Chicago if it hadn't worked out that way do you think that the election result might well have been different in November between a Vice President Humphrey and former Vice President Nixon I think it very probably would have been different Michael because Nixon won by less than one percent of the vote and whenever an election is that close every single thing that you can sink of that didn't go your way is one of the explainers it could have been any one of those in one of the things that I reading your book the book is called playing with fire and a 2 things 1st of all one of the sort of jokes that was common at the time in 1968 was a slogan for the Wallace campaign should be bombs away with Wallace Le May because Curtis Lemay the former chief of the Air Force was definitely inclined to use our nuclear capacity but secondly they didn't debate Nixon refuse to debate and. They had had debates of course in 1960 s. Didn't go so well for Richard Nixon wouldn't that have been something to have a debate with Wallace Humphrey and Nixon weld Wallace was one of Nixon's excuses saying that he didn't want to elevate Wallace by having a debate that would include all 3 but but Nixon was pretty consistently the front runner and so the front runner always wants to avoid debates if possible they still would like to if they could and if you look at the you know the big say Senate races around the country most of them don't have debates when there's an incumbent for example who is a front runner who is way in the lead they don't they don't bother to debate you know their opposition and so there was no debate in 68 but what they did have the final night before the election was they each bought their own time on the network the Humphrey campaign bought one of the networks and the Nixon campaign bought another network and they discussed the issues and they took questions from audience members in a way that they were trying to suggest was a debate or how to give you the feeling of debate and that's the one that was the biggest television event that occurred in the campaign but Nixon. Just was holding on at that point and Humphrey was surging closing a gigantic gap as we entered there entered the last couple of days of the campaign and so the the Nixon campaign was not going to debate then because they firmly believe that would be all Humphrey would need to catapult ahead of them coming out citizen in the years and when you think about people who are doing good work for Americans. For. Welcome back to the town hall review I'm Hugh Hewitt the closing of the year 2017 brings with the celebration of individuals who stood up and maybe even accomplish something big during the year Time magazine may have started with decades ago with a person of the Year award and their g.q. Or gentleman quarterly magazine which has a citizen of the Year award but here's Michael Medved you know it's time for another golden turkey award nomination. And this golden turkey award goes to g.q. Magazine otherwise known as Gentlemen's Quarterly I don't think they call it that anymore because of course being a gentleman is so old fashioned but the magazine g.q. Is anything but old fashioned They have a special edition under the men of the year the new American heroes that's the big headline and then it has citizen of the year who is the citizen of the year and the biggest of the new American heroes can we have a drum roll please Maestro because the citizen of the year is somebody who is a person of conscience and courage and dazzling brilliance and singular idealism and unquestioned stature and it is Cullen catbird you know. There was an applause after after all it's a golden turkey award after all and and here's the the way they explain this award they explain the award because not only is he a great now standing athlete. They say he's been vilified by millions and walked out of the n.f.l. All because he took a knee to protest police brutality but Collin capper Nick's determined stand puts him in rare company and sports history Mohammed Ali Jackie Robinson athletes who risked everything to make a difference. Ok 1st of all Mohammed Ali was kind of a big winner so was Jackie Robinson who was an incredible player Colin Kaepernick was facing is facing a fading career before he decided to take a knee and also 1st of all Jackie Robinson we know what he was fighting for he was fighting to erase segregation in major league sports and he faced very serious discrimination obviously in order to do it I mean can you imagine you come back from the war as Jackie Robinson did having fought in the war and you're not allowed to play baseball in the major leagues here in sort of segregated into these so-called Negro Leagues that's a serious problem what is calling Captain a deeply devoted to what has he achieved how is he one. How is he advanced his cause I mean this is this is sad and it's pathetic and citizen of the year. When you think about people who are doing good work. For Americans.
