Many people do become stronger more capable they have a sense of confidence even a sense of great of purpose of life after sort of a severe birth that they are I believe that there are there are 3 factors necessary as one of your experts pointed out for post-traumatic growth I guess to take place can you explain those I think the things that have to sort of be there because not everybody is going to feel stronger unfortunately after a bad event but if you watch the people who do have the things I want to social supports you had people who sort of lifted you in this difficult experience so that your experience that it wasn't just survival you could sort of think about something bigger you could move through it a little easier with the social support not to run into people. I think that spirituality and that doesn't have to be just a religion of God but. Renewed connection to religion but it could be nature it could be anything larger than yourself that you felt like something. Larger than yourself in the world does that work and then the 3rd is a cognitive adaptive coping and behavioral changes so it's basically you're thinking about the experience and you're changing your behaviors in terms of that so you know say you know a person has a very difficult illness like a cancer that cognitive and behavioral coping as they start to think about what I wanted to do with my life when I get through this what does it mean and I'm going to change my behavior to do those things are so you think that you went through some of this I did I think I definitely went through a lot of this one thing that really struck me through this experience and we were very lucky the storm did not hit Miami where I was as a Category 5 it hit us you know was a one we walked away incredibly lucky and other people didn't unfortunately but what was the trauma to me was those days before when it was coming it was coming in myself my parents my sister we all at homes in the way trying to figure it out so that level of fear working through it I had such tremendous So social support through that not necessarily from the people on the ground my family and friends in Miami they were terrified but elsewhere I had so many people texting and calling in that I did feel like sort of up with good and that feeling has not gone away I think it was really you know very central to it in terms of spirituality like you're watching a huge natural disaster come out you definitely have a sense of the power of nature and it is things that are bigger than you and I tried to you know adapt I tried to keep going I during the storm one of the hardest things was these tornadoes coming at us we had tornado alerts every few minutes and had to go in a closet and my niece and nephew were young 6 and 9 were with us and we danced in the closet mostly like we had a little dance party to distract them and but also to lower our fear and I think later that sense of hey you did these things to help everybody including yourself really made me feel stronger Wall Street Journal.
