For our number 3 I am glad to hear thank you so very very much we're here for obviously the remainder of today and then tomorrow Joe Concha media writer over the hill and Nick Adams on Thursday we're back together on Friday to welcome Hugh back from his British escapade on Monday Meanwhile today's adventure continues and as a frequent listener to the segments containing Philip Rucker The Washington Post it's a pleasure to to to conduct one of those segments Philip welcome How are you doing sir Hi Thank you I'm doing great very nice to have you so President Trump at the u.n. We've had sort of some foreign policy scribes weighing in on on what he will say about the global scene but as the White House bureau chief what is in this for Trump in terms of politics and image and reputation what what's what's at stake for him today. Well lots at stake you know He's dabbled in foreign policy a great deal in his 1st 8 months of President and we've seen him abroad and in individual meetings with world leaders and at some of these summits but we've not seen him at the United Nations as the host country you know speaking to these global issues and there's a lot going on in the world right now that I think the world is eager to hear him address including and most especially North Korea and the nuclear threat there and I think there's an opportunity here for Trump to show some global leadership to try to unite you know America with its traditional allies and a way that others in the world can feel comfortable with you know it's been a bit of a question mark for this president so far but it's an opportunity today I'm intrigued by the word comfortable because the comfort of the rest of the world in the way the world feels about us has been a big theme today and again due to do we do things that are meant to call home the 4 corners of the globe or do we do things that speak to a strong America standing up to North Korea standing up to a flawed Iranian nuclear deal standing up to tin horns and tyrants all over the place and just hope that people feel better about America with with a strong president that's a great point you know I'm not I'm not arguing that that trumps objective here is to make people feel calmer but I do think if he were to speak. Quite quite the opposite exactly I know if that were to articulate a. Strong sense of mission and agenda here with North Korea in particular it would call the rest of the world if he were to signal that there were you know policy here that might work if he were to take some global leadership that would be well received I would imagine. Covering the White House obviously I asked everybody I talked to who covers the White House what they think is going on in President Trump's mind with regard to the Dhaka deal is he willing to delay wall funding in order to get some kind of deal that will be perceived as legislative points on the board he seems to be you not I think he's looking at that soccer issue at more than just legislative point on the or I mean the he views it you know from humanitarian perspective you know our children many of them who who came here at Silver and rather through no fault of their own and have thrived in American society and want to be able to find a way for them to stay and continue to contribute and you know he he he he feels that in his heart and acts and conflict reckoning with. The impulses of his base and with his overall policies with regard to immigration but he'd like to try to find a way to help the stocker recipients over the long run and in terms of that while funding I mean we we know what he sort of agreed to in that meeting with the Democrats last week but you know there are different ways to begin this wall and he can he can show some progress on the wall without it being fully fund that in this year he can he can try to you know explain how how he's amping up border security in ways that can satisfy his base temporarily while still helping the Dockers in Philip Rocker's here White House bureau chief for The Washington Post follow him on Twitter at Philip Rucker one l. So let's talk about a couple of things that are going on that the president will be involved in and what contribution he may he may offer Senate Republicans are trying just another attempt to replace Obamacare the Cassidy Graham effort what is that destructive like it and where is that going to go. Well this is a potentially very big deal. Stronger here in the last couple of days unexpectedly and it looks very real there's a possibility now that Senate Republicans can get those 50 votes they would need to get this bill passed before the end of September through the reconciliation process and I think if they were to do it Trump would would welcome it and and applaud it I mean it would be it would be a step in the direction of where he's wanted to go which is to change the health care system and you know chip away at the Affordable Care Act you know otherwise known as Obamacare you know Vice President Pence is going to be working hard with the senators this week including today to try to whip those votes and get this deal Frew somehow you know we have been here before of course where health care has failed in the Senate you know I don't know the holdouts remain Lisa Murkowski of Alaska John McCain of Arizona. The 2 leading ones so we'll have to see where they're going to go they've been pretty cagey so far about how they're going to vote let's go some real. Palace intrigue because you mentioned Mike Pence he has a new press secretary who's a noteworthy woman. She is a with the Farrah you know. Very professional well regarded political operative here in Washington she's been the Acme an occasion that I care to share Mark Meadows the congressman who had the house freedom caucus she's going to be coming over to the vice president back replacing Mark Lauder who had been the vice president press secretary is out of Indiana and I think she's going to help the vice president see a daughter relationship in Washington with journalists who's well respected see knows the legislative process that the Biden out and see also understand the politics. That base the politics of the Freedom caucus sort of forget all of that and see if going to be able to help navigate that somebody asked me a question about Mike Pence because as someone who knows I'm a big supporter of the chump agenda which means I've got to do a lot of massaging explaining every once in a while and they ask me what do I think of pens and I I mean this is somewhat Lucy goosey I think he's perfect and by this I mean he is exactly the vice president that if you're trump that you need whereas you can tweet with wild abandon people wondering you know being bang bang your ricochet rabbit What are you doing what's going on today the sharp elbows the the bully the bullying tone the street brawler if that's you boy do you need the bedrocks solid visit of a Mike Pence as as vice president does that sound about right. I think it does that you know perhaps it's very reassuring to a lot of. Republican them from Democrats on Capitol Hill but also internationally I traveled with Vice President pence a month or so ago and did a trip through South America and Central America and he's presidential I mean it was like a normal presidential foreign trip that he had these bilateral meetings with the heads of of a number of countries he gave a press conference that people with at speeches that were well received and I think he's able to go back to the world and communicate a message of American strength and of reassurance to leaders who may feel a little jittery as they watch how President Trump behaves and how President tweets and so forth they can hear from pads and and feel reassured that there's a steady hand he's presidential enough for both of them last thing for Philip Brecker at the Washington Post a President Trump all in for Luther Strange in this Alabama runoff Roy Moore still with the poll more seeming almost like a more Trump b. And choice and and Luther Strange is Mitch McConnell's guys and probably doing way too much triangulation but why the and trumpet Trump is headed for Alabama I think he's been that trip has been delayed to Friday I believe that he will go to Alabama to to campaign for Luther Strange what's what's going on there. This is this is a fascinating situation that that special election in Alabama the runoff is going to be next Tuesday September 26th and Trump is supporting the incumbent Luther Strange that's in part because they developed a good relationship over the health care issue with their strength has been a very loyal senator to this president and you need Trump's help and he's going to get Trump's help but it's really interesting because the Trump coalition is deeply divided in this race and we're seeing Steve Banahan the former chief strategist some of the forces and Breitbart News Sarap a land of ours who were work he kind of surrogates and players in the Trump campaign coming out for Roy Moore They view him as the more natural Trump and candidate in this race and we're going to this is going to be a real test I think of whether Trump himself can lift up on establishment candidate or whether his movement you know supporters are going to like Trump decide to vote for more cover in the White House for The Washington Post Philip rocker It's a pleasure Paula thank you so much safe travels joy to talk to you thank you I follow me on Twitter at Philip one l Philip. Trisha Yearwood 53 today as we work our way through. I do let us work our way through some telephone calls 180-520-1234 if you're in Charlotte you work out even in the more beautiful it let's all of North Carolina is beautiful and you had further further further west you get to Forest City North Carolina and Rick that's you Mark Davis in for you how you do it Mark Davis I'm doing wonderful and you do well got plenty of order and all of the ones and the situations going on. But let's get down to the to do the brass tacks of the issues and that is that the Democratic Party has a lot more heart their thinking with a lot or of their heart than they are with their mind it's really easy to realize that we want to help people that's what is the proper human nature is to help our fellow man of course but they love your neighbor as yourself and help your fellow man and probably is if you can't make a policy for the entire country using your heart because we have to go back to one of the basic foundations of even the Democratic party unity is go back to j.f.k. What he said he said. What can you what can we have to think about what you can do for your country not what your country can do for you and said you know a great party has sail into this crap and they want to this run we've got to help people got to help people we got to help the next great but do you help people with . And have a call to have an outcome of this country failing we can't have it this country is the best hope for mankind there 6000000000 people on this planet we can't help them all but what we can do is we can give opportunity to people it is they have to take their own opportunity and make it make it better and that's what has happened in the past in aggressive came in in the past were given opportunities to succeed but part of that opportunity succeed Mark is that you might fail but if you fail guess what there's a lot of people around here that love you and they want to help you but you can't continue to help people all their lives people have to be able to stand up on their t.c. And that's what these basic country one of the basic premises is this and that's one of the basic failures of the Democratic Party is that they they have all this feeling that they are feeling to help people whether it's in education or whether it's in some kind of housing look at the have to given to the to the to the black community not to talk too bad about it with the same failure that's happened in the black community with 3 to 4 children being born without a whole family the systemic that are coming in from. Their fall in the same pathway is that more and more Hispanic families are being broken up and more and more Hispanic children are being born and wedlock and not having a full family health at all because we want to be kind because we thought open borders sounded kind kindness and kindness is a biblical virtue you are incredibly on target and magnificently eloquent Reg thank you in identifying the real wisdom of kindness as a driving force when that is your locomotive you say that every state must recognize gay marriage because we want to be nice to gay people you say we have to put transsexuals in the military because we want to be nice to transsexuals we say any one of a number of things that are designed to be nice and kind and by the way we should be. Nice and kind as people to each other but when kindness drives policy and when it supplants and supersedes the wisdom of what the military is for the wisdom of what borders are supposed to mean you know affirmative action you know back in the day was to tilt the playing field back more toward a correct level now offering you know dumbing things down for people of color is this is a favor to them that it's insulting to them and so when kindness drives policy the results can can be positively poisonous All right so Michael Anton is deputy assistant to the president for strategic communications in national security concepts and a member of the National Security Council holy cow they hope they hold those meetings and he's in there and guess where he is next with us from the Trump White House presidential a deputy aide Michael in time joins us to talk about the president's u.n. Sorry make everybody feel old on the Tuesday here show this is a wonderful opportunity that we have right now on a day when the trumpet ministrations certainly front of mind when is it not when our presence on the global stage is certainly front of mind when is it not but it certainly is in particular focus today and my Clinton is deputy assistant the president for strategic communications and joins us from within the White House structure itself Michael welcome our user. Thank you I'm actually in New York with the president I met metaphorically within the White House is about as well you are and as well you should be so let's begin there 1st of all what is the exact timing of Lucy goosey at the u.n. President should hit that stage at about what time 301030 we'll be paying attention we get some snippets of what he will talk about let's see what kind of a little bit of disaster little a telegraph the whole thing but he'll certainly talk about some North Korea what is what is the overall impression that he wants the audience both in that room and outside the room to think about his thoughts on North Korea. Or a lot from North Korea that nations of the world need to remain united applying pressure on North. Area and that the u.n. Which has done some good work recently passing a resolution unanimously passing a strong condemning Tory press statement yet now in the plea needs to stay together and keep the pressure on the job both for international bodies and for individual member states to address since since you're right here and I just got a blip on the phone from c.n.n. Which means I'll need to translate it u.s. Considers shooting down North Korean missiles that don't pose a direct threat Well 1st of all I consider all North Korean missiles to pose a threat of some level but what is that is what's been the latest conversation of these tensions ratcheting up the notion of taking out a North Korean missile is something that we all know we may have to do either in flight or on the ground what's latest on that well I'm not going to specifically predict or tell any option the president may look at but he's been very clear and senior staff in his cabinet have been very clear that we have not ruled out any options for dealing with this threat our strategy remains one of applying maximum diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea to convince the regime that this is not the path to beyond for its own preservation and pull and security in Northeast Asia and we're going to continue with that strategy I think the president knows he has more cards to play in pressuring the that the can the North Korean regime but he won't really what we're leaving out nor I think would anyone in his position are we just about at the end of sanctions I heard Nikki Haley say listen it's about time to hand this over to General Mattis who have we pretty well exhausted the arrows in the sanctions quiver I wouldn't say we've exhausted them yet but you know the urgency of the threat has certainly grown tremendously over the past several months and continues to grow as the regime continues to press forward with its ballistic missile and nuclear program so the ambassador is certainly correct the United States and our allies and partners agree with us on this we do judge that the world is running out time to deal with this problem Michael and Thomas here deputy assistant to President Trump for strategic communique. Asians Let's pivot to Iran I understand there's going to be a bit of outreach to the people of Iran to say look we have no gripe with you it's your leadership that is poisonous and and there are friendships and connections that can be made between our 2 countries if maybe you listen I don't know if he's fomenting the seeds of revolution but it wouldn't be a bad idea well look this is something that I think our that's been clear on from the beginning we do make a distinction between the Romney people and the Iranian regime and the Iranian people as you know over the years voiced their frustration with the way they are governed and have been governed since 1979 by this revolutionary government and our problems with the revolutionary government you know certainly also extend well beyond obviously term people although that's a part of it but it's their nuclear program both technical development proliferation financial and the serial support for terrorism and regional destabilization and from Iran to Yemen to Syria and this is a regime that's just sort of up to no good no matter from which angle you look at it played some audio early today of the meeting yesterday between President Trump An Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in their mutual admiration and the the real appreciation that one gets from Israel for finally finally after such a long drought having an American president American administration that has their back. At the United Nations do you share the view that it is disturbingly anti Israeli. It certainly has been in the past and this is ministration came into office Valen to confront that I don't know that there's any way we know one country can completely stop it but you know the United States is certainly not going to do what you saw happen toward the end of the Obama administration and that and abstain and allow the passage of frankly and is really a resolution in this ministration to stand firm veto things like that without question Michael in times here and he's on the United States' National Security Council let's do some comparison if we can use you are on it now Roche beaches and tell me about your role in the Bush administration with regard to the n.s.c. I also served as President Bush's foreign policy speech writer at the n.s.c. And was one of the spokespeople and communications planners of the n.s.c. And the 1st term of the George w. Bush administration are there differences is the n.s.c. Pretty well a constant I mean not between necessarily Republican and Democrat I'm guessing the Obama and se had a different flavor the Clinton n.s.c. But a Republican National Security Council's a fairly recognizable thing or do they change a lot based on the specific personality of who's president there's a lot of continuity that I recognize I think the processes and the structure and institutions don't change a lot or they change very slowly but and many of the threats that we were dealing with that we have to deal with today President Bush had to deal with North Korea president has to deal with North Korea some of the some things never change other things have changed I've noticed some subtle and not so subtle differences both because of who is the national security adviser and who is the president so there's some continuity and there just and there's change and there's change both I think one main difference between the n.s.c. Under this president and of her president is that the end of the staff is a lot smaller today than it was at the height of the Obama administration it's also less operational less in the nitty gritty of telling cabinet agencies what to do and more back to its you know statutory role of. Policy making policy formulating and its Regency coordination body interesting is that at is that president trumps direction that his his idea yet for sure he really wants his cabinet secretaries to and you know and the leaders of executive branch agencies that have the authority to run their departments without being told what to do by frankly people quite a bit junior to those. It dede speaking of youth be your be your relative youth was spent there in the bush n.s.c. Were you there for 911. I was not at the end of the 911 I was actually at the CIA And I don't know well the then tell me that story has your your path has been an interesting one and we've just been through that 16th anniversary so what was that day like in Langley we were actually told to leave the building at around 10 30 in the morning if I recall and everybody went home and spent the rest of the day watching t.v. And listening to radio like everyone else in America and went back to work the next day and you know very much tried to hit the ground running and and stayed in that posture percent indeed our last thing we did today is a day where we talk about this president this country and the world stage as it is called Is it wise or unwise to spend a lot of time thinking about what the world thinks of us if the world is nervous that doesn't mean that we've necessarily done bad things and if the world is comfortable with us that doesn't necessarily mean that we're doing right it's people always phrase things in that way and I wonder what your view on that is well you have to strip down to can't be indifferent toward public opinion because world public opinion has an effect on how much latitude you have to act in your interest in world affairs but you also can't let won't public opinion they create what you will or won't do in you know your core vital interests so it's it's a fine line I think you know every administration has to walk a different way I think might my own music some of the more successful ministrations of the ones that are a little more. Willing to brave definitely public opinion or at least write it out and sometimes public opinion unpopular decision proved to be more popular over time as it was in the borne out if you are willing to withstand the 1st shock indeed boy and on that point do what is your thought as a witness to the way the Bush administration is viewed now through the rearview mirror and the passage of time. I think a lot of that has President Bush made and then the new kid by history and some of them have been shown to have been you know still problematic to say I mean this president ran explicitly against the Iraq war I think it and I say this is a former supporter of with the 2003 Iraq war I think it's hard to look in the rearview mirror and still maintain that was that all work out the way people including myself thought it was going to work out going in that sort of the SOPs way I can put it. That speaks he will judge and I think it will that resonates beautifully because I was with you I have been that I thought it was I still think it was a worthy idea to take the war to the part of the world that wanted to kill us the way it carried out was was very problematic we are not a war like people maintaining political support for the kind of war that might have earned us victory by now was something that was very very hard to do so in so here's President Trump who talks about knocking down ISIS and seemingly getting more aggressive in the Middle East while saying that it was a mistake to go into Iraq how do those square with each other I don't think he said he is going to be more aggressive in the Middle East broadly he has said he's going to take down I think by the way under this administration we've seen quite a bit of progress a lot of that most of it really through our partners on the ground I mean it's primarily Iraqi friends who liberated mogul Mosul sorry and it's primarily Kurdish and Syrian opposition that have a rocket that I feel sorry down to a few square blocks at Rocca So you know given where they were. Only a few years ago they've been lost territory in the last resources or and people under their government and their thing and they know it Michael thanks for the detail and the very broad concepts you brought us best to the boss and thank you so much for being with us thank you sir and as Michael and time the senior national security official in the actual trumpet Mr ation in New York. Really really don't and I know that there's also a point made about sort of the ban and Breitbart wing of the n.s.c. And the Michael entitling if he has his own way but I just I don't think that's a necessary dichotomy a necessary mutually exclusive thing the have to set up in time as smart as a whip and that was just a joy to hear and if this if this guy has the president's ear that is nothing but a good thing well let's see who has our ear as we wrap up on the telephone zoë we are in Kennesaw Georgia Clark Mark Davis in for he get to take us out how you don't take Clark. Stunned by the stunned by the brilliance of the guest segment but that's all right because there are a couple of minutes of things that I want to share anyway there's always stuff that I have my sleeve and here's what it is as we as we part company and leave you to the rest of your Salem Radio Network broadcast day. When President Trump speaks to the United Nations and the world in just under 2 hours I don't fully know what he will say but I I think have an idea of the themes and the themes are vital the themes are designed to make North Korea think you know we're not just going to sit on our hands anymore while you engage in nuclear adventures those days are done the messaging is designed to be there for the mullahs in the in the Fiachra c. Of Iran that we know that Iran nuclear deal is is a stinker and we're not going to live with that status quo nor are we going to sit idly by as Iran facilitates terror all over the world those days are over those 8 years of willful blindness are over our allies also will send something very different in seeing President Trump at the u.n. It's already apparent from Prime Minister Netanyahu is appreciation of an actual American president that treats Israel like the ally that it is and that's been absent for far far too long so it is a day to put aside whatever beefs you may have about Trump's tweeds or or some personality style gripe you may have this is a strong and focused American presidency thank God and as he walks into the United Nations a building that he's had a lot of criticism for boat. He as president and his ambassador Nikki Haley through her loyal and magnificent service have shown that that the United the United Nations is not a reflection of America necessarily even though we heavily fund it but the way one feels about the United Nations is directly linked to the presidency that that occurs alongside it the United Nations under Obama looked like a partnership designed to damage America's reputation run around the globe apologizing for our perceived sins whereas the United Nations under Trump because and Nikki Haley becomes something that can be energized something that can be refocused repurposed brought closer to what it is supposed to be a bunch of countries getting together to talk about things that idea at its core is a good one you know a place where it where everybody sends an ambassador and we talk about stuff not is the United Nations tend to be a coven of tin horns and tyrants and of course it does and the best. Into doat to that the best contribution to that unfortunate status quo is a strong American president and a strong American United Nations ambassador and darned if we don't have both it is it is a good day it is a good day it's always a good day here on the Hugh Hewitt Show check things out of the universe h u g h nevers at the universe and see what stuff everybody is up to and thanks to Dwayne and Adam and Danielle for just making this a joy if you want to read the stuff I say in book form I did that it's like 125 talk show topics in a book it's stuff liberal say that we really got to push back against and we're doing so with relative varying levels of effectiveness it's called upside down how the left turn right and wrong truth in the lives of good in the bad I know that snappy and long just to Mark Davis upside down in your Google search.
