Thank you they. Was Gone all happy people. This is your boy your boy boy Roger Porter this is they get old time shout out to Gnarls Barkley shout out to sea LOL foreshadowing alert you're going to hear a lot from him today because this episode episode number 3. Is the episode that we do this so care soundtrack that's right now in previous episodes I haven't played songs I've alluded to songs but I haven't actually played songs that I'm getting some off whole D.J. Status today play some tracks for you all mental health is serious people talk about self care like it's a luxury like a something actually that you do so care is a necessity every day you need to take care of yourself listen I got to take care of someone else if you don't take care of yourself 1st right so I have 5 songs that I'm going to play for you all is going to be a countdown self care soundtrack. So these are songs that the she would play when when the depression starts set in when additional star power and when a close remain unfolded at the 2nd week when your room is out or your professional life is out of sorts your love life is ruined you feel like you're forgotten by God you begin comparing yourself unfavorably to people Instagram for weeks and months at a time checking up with people that are checking in on you making people letting people make you feel bad about yourself via social media right. So yeah these are 5 songs that I'm going to play that are played as my totally totally totally biased opinion. Of songs that help me get through all right so let's let's start let's get into the countdown I missed you guys you guys miss me too let's hope so so at the top of the list is is a guy who. Is a guy who has his own his own. R. And B. Creative sound I feel like he's celebrated. For coming out of the closet but not really coming out of the closet but saying that he was involved in a same sex relationship at a time when he was a very very relevant in the hip hop gang and of course I'm talking about Mr Frank Ocean so I feel like people talk about him for that I don't know if his music gets to the credibility that it it really deserves as far as his creativity as far as him capturing whole moments it is a song I can only play the beginning of it I can't play the whole thing because Frank Ocean being the raw explicit uncompromising artist that he is use a few curse words but I'm going to play enough of it for you to get the point all right here we go ladies and gentlemen number 5. On a countdown night by Mr Frank Ocean. Everybody knew. Everybody. Yeah. Yeah absolutely. You know what Frank. I could hear the I can hear the confusion and his voice that song is largely about disenchantment and another we've all felt very disenchanted with the world and how it presents itself to us particularly in that awkward age of late teenage early adult years and Frank Ocean was living in New Orleans he had to leave New Orleans because of Katrina and so not only did it it had to feel as though. The earth to Mother Nature were separating him from his homeland but then also. Just him trying to figure out himself and figure out and figure out life and and he says. My favorite lines from that are I have to have 2 favorite lines from that particular record. The course is amazing we don't get a chance to hear but he says New Beginnings it's time to started they. Lurk not the words in itself but everything that that indicates as if one has been in the slumbers if one has not been wanting to get out of bed as if one needs to motivate oneself I find myself there all the time I have so many tasks that I need to accomplish so many things and I say tomorrow I may get up early and I'm going to start and I would do all these things like I'm a rise with the sun I say that before I go to bed but if I'm feeling grief from Bill and pain from feeling overwhelmed and often times I can just want to stay in bed for the whole entire day. But I know I can't do that I can't function and stay in the bed all day and so often given. Giving myself the Frank Ocean pep talk is time to start. Like you get it you gotta get out of it he gotta do it. You know. When I hear that song and the song has been stuck in my hair probably for the whole year now. You know he speaks about trying to fit in and he's hanging out with women and he knows who owns the town who has a pop in with the shooters a don't win but he still feels as powerful in these still becoming aware of the world around him my 2nd favorite line from that track is back when Boswell and Percy had acted couple bishops in a city building mansions all the reverence preach and self-made millionaire status we can only edition only on occasion so you have the reverence that are preaching the gospel. Supposed to be uplifting the people or maybe maybe they are not here to you know generalize reverence but if they were millionaires but the congregation that he was a part of was poor and it can only eat at Shoney's Shoney's the equivalent of Applebee's I don't know if we have shown he's out here they can only eat a Shoney's on occasion but the people that are supposed to be expressing the righteous word to them are are benefiting greatly and becoming wealthy from their oppression that will present some problems maybe that is strange him from from the church maybe that made him begin to not trust man so much and all of this happening in his soul and you hear that in his voice and in the music yet there's still that you gotta start. This still that son of matter what no matter what your face with you still have to get up you still have to start your day so much respect to the young brother Frank Ocean coming in and number 5 alert it keeps going it keeps gone we're going to count this thing down to number 4 now listen let me set this up right I'm from the Bay Area Oakland specifically the next song I'm about to play is from this area but it's very very it's based on my age at the time when I was coming up at the time when I was an adolescent your music means so much to you when you're 121314 years old because you feel like no one understands you you feel like no one is felt the pain that you feel no one has been as confused as you are confused no one is live the life that you live and you hear the songs and you cling to these songs and the songs make you cool and you remember the words of the song as and tell your friends about all these songs and so. This one is my pick Now if you're young in the Bay Area right now 12131415 or something like that probably a huge fan of S O B R B E shout out at all the brothers on the layout California they made a Black Panther soundtrack right I guess I'm bangers if you were coming up in an early to mid 2000. Dollars push me I'm a brown 20052006 probably mag. Right I'm in a building and I'm feelin myself he probably spoke to your life he probably saying your party soundtrack you know Thea's dance you know I mean I feel it Yeah absolutely he had his moment now if you came up around the time that I came up probably the most commercial song that you could listen to to get the party poppin in speaks to to Oakland at a local scene would be the looneys I got 5 on it right classic classic classic joint OK I respect it but I'm weird I don't know if you are knew this about me but I'm aware person I generally tenser refrain from liking the things that I'm supposed to like or that most people like I mean I need my local Anthony to be more specific because I'm not just from the Bay Area I'm not just from Oakland but I'm from Deep East Oakland and there is one group that made it an anthem about Ma put a tale Mon neighborhood my area and made it hard a black Dynasty number for Deep East Oakland check it out. Nice. To see. What's. Been missed. In the break. In the ghetto so let's stick to. The present. But. This. 85. Dollars. Game. No. I'm not. Sorry. Just. Because it. Looks. Like. A. Gallon about. His mistress is going to definitely. A bottle of them. Coming. So in this listen when you get the chance please please check out the video man listen speaking of the video I was almost famous I was almost in a video I promise riding around with. My older brother and my cousin we wound up at the San Leandro Marina and they were filming that video we had heard the song before but it was it was lit and they were they were doing their thing I had all the old school cars and cutlasses right there at the marina I want to so desperately to get a video but I was behind the camera and I was trying to creep up to the front now mind you I was about 12 years old something like that well 13 I was on a creep up to the front and yeah it didn't happen I wasn't famous but I was almost famous I was almost in a black band is the video so so so upset at that but I can still appreciate the song shout out shout outs of black dynasty for making a song I so listen. There are 2 types of people in the world just in case you didn't know those or there are those that think that outcast is the best group in the history of hip hop and then there are those who are wrong I'm right all right check it out so course. I have some I have some outcast on the agenda and this particular song I'm going to play. Liberation it was off the queen and I. And it's speaks to my soul in a way that a lot of records can a lot of art can a lot of paintings can a lot of literature can but it it really. I'm not a very I don't do yoga. I don't do yoga I don't burn incense. I don't even smoke we write I'm not a Buddhist have to Barry and it's rare that that that that you have an individual it doesn't do any of those things I'm not against I'm but I'm just not really that person but the closest that I can get to being that person is when I put on this song and this song is for for when I'm real stressed out but after the stress is over the song that I played before. Was a song. Like Frank Ocean nights ironically enough is called nights I play the song to wake up and it's time to start my day right and makes me feel like I can do this song play after my day has ended as far as work is concerned all of drama is concerned and I need to calm down I need to settle down I need to get back within myself and appreciate my life and appreciate the struggle and appreciate what I'm fighting for every member what I'm fighting for and remember that it's OK to be lost. As long as you acknowledge their chill loss and try to find your path again whether. We have outcast song featuring Cielo featuring big rule. Featuring none other than Miss Eric but do I want to try to play as much of it as possible because you know that our cares and outcasts sound you know sometimes they didn't. They didn't care how long the song was made and I appreciate it but as far as fit on the show it might be a little bit cumbersome so I'll try to play as much as I can for you guys this is liberation by out. All. Right. All. Right. Let me. Oh. Oh. Thank you. So put. You. On the. List. Is. A must to me a plan to love. That phrase from the host of cocaine from the floor from the post again it's hard to maintain focus from the Glock around. The same because it's. In the rain. Drop the sauce to your surprise. Right place as well as. The. Melon. Segment. Getting stuck. With. A rich white. Looking at the canvas of life. Single. You know oh. You. Think you can from the notes on. This is no moto Western. Dress in their mouth whether Robbie. ROGERS. Sure. Liberation by. Lawrence I mean I'm sorry Erica Erica about to lose part. So so powerful for me she said you get a lot of love because of who you got because of what she got to say happy for you but they really nice a lot of records and you roll the band's follow up on the spot now you're losing friends all you want to do is get a world of your heart record label try to make it come from my art I'm not a rapper I've never been a rapper but I know that feeling of pursuing a goal and then questioning that pursuit attaining what you set out and then once you get it like Is this what I really want is this is this is this is it why am I not as happy as I should be that confusion once again that's a consistent theme through a lot of the songs that I'm choosing because when I'm confused I want to hear something that echoes not having the answers she talks about this particular entertainer this particular artist who's got the money got to the top of the charts and. Get the women and everything but he still treat it like an individual from the streets an individual that is raised in poverty right and he can't scrub that off he can't achieve so much that that is not prevalent in his character I relate that to my situation in a sense that. When I was young it was all about getting a college degree become educated education equals success right and I got one degree I got 2 bachelor's and master's master's degree and wondering why well I was in massive debt. No more people out there can relate to that all my people with degrees out there looking for for Sallie Mae and Navy and known people to gave all their money at exorbitant rate taken advantage of young 18 year olds but the point was I was told that that would equal happiness and that's not how it worked out and with this particular individual the DO is talking about he wanted to be a rapper an intent on the rock star's whole life in and he got it and that wasn't what what it was about he his life began to unravel even though he achieved all the things that he set out to achieve and it's so profound but in a in a sense it's very troubling but it's also very comforting at the same time because when you listen to the melody listen the big Rube's poetry listen to Cielo you listen to all those people everything coming together to a classic outcast Atlanta Dungeon Family sound and you feel like oh somebody can relate Oh she sing a song and I'm not a huge fan of air do like I said before I have anything against her I mean I love See you next lifetime and some other things do fans they get real wrapped up is it's not just like you listen to music like it's a whole way of being. When you listen to when you listen to Eric about it was a whole tribe of individuals. You know I never I never fully associated with that particular tribe but when I listen to this song I definitely understand how people can become so devoted to her music and you know I wish I wish her. And I under a 3000 I wish that relationship would a lasted forever but it didn't but at least we get a classic classic classic record that I play when I'm feeling down and almost out but not quite all right so that was that was number 3 we get in so close we get in so close the 2nd song I listen to so care soundtrack just in case you want to sell care soundtrack This is the the 2nd most comforting song that I listen to when I'm feeling really well let me let me tell you something if I can be honest which of course I can and I will and I always will be I've played a song when I'm dealing with heartbreak when I'm dealing with heartache when I feel unappreciated when I was got in an argument with someone that I that I care about and I feel like no one understands I put this song on self care soundtrack number 2 law in here. Tell them. Make. Out the. The mother the. The thank you. I am. Thinking. Like. Now. And. I think. It's. No. At the feet the. Lauryn Hill and always amaze me how someone so beautiful can present such pure insecurities and their music and allow themselves to be so vulnerable now I'm a half a to make mountains fall but if I like I love and I'm nothing at all. Scripture. Yeah Lauren Lauren Lauren Hill and people people forget about the miseducation a Lauren hero and how impactful that that album was and we felt like it was just the beginning and she would be cranking out albums every year on the course that's not that's not how it happened I was able to see Lauryn Hill because after the massive success of the miseducation she came back with an acoustic album everyone was in with it there were rumors about mental health issues rumors about her having breakdowns. And being. In abusive relationships and all of those things. I can't confirm that but I do know for sure that I was able to see her Mountain View ampitheater and she she was in her queue she was in her acoustic and she brought her guitar and she played a song the song was like him Ministre and it was so amazing and I still had a lot of hope for her career but that was pretty much that I'm plugged album I want to say that was the last album that charted and the people were really fainting for when it came to Lauryn Hill and she still tours she still does a thing in mind seeing her but. I feel like maybe maybe the music business got the best of her but I know we still have that song we still have that album such an amazing album such an amazing song that I like to listen to when when I'm all broken up and Laura makes me feel like there's hope for me that someone loves me and no one else loves me Lauryn Hill loves me and Lauryn Hill is telling me that it's going to be OK And you know what oftentimes that's enough so that's number 2 and listen before we get into Number one I want to give honorable mention a few honorable honorable mentions I want to give honorable mention to SOS a boy. Term us waggle That's right people like to hate on Soldier Boy talk about his his lyrical constantly Don't listen to soldier boy for lyrical content listen to soldier boy to turn a swag on every morning another song I like to play when I'm having a hard time getting out of my bed is. Be. On and I feel like no one no one can stop me no one can no one can make me feel like I'm less than what I am about to conquer the world with a swag on everybody in my job shout out to soldier but also shout out to Donny Hathaway Donny Hathaway given up is hard to do. One of all time favorite songs also a heartbreak song when I'm dealing with heartache what I like about Donny Hathaway's he struggled with mental illness as well you can hear it you can hear it in his lyrics he's a man dealing with a whole lot of pain and I love the artists that are going through pain you hear the pain in their voices and even when you are or when you aren't looking at the video you can still see the anguish on their faces when you listen to it that's why I'm not a huge fan of Luther Vandross little you listen to Luther Vandross you know you can always you can you can hear him smiling and I like the blues man on the. I mean would you smile if we were. He said feel downtrodden be heartbroken and on losing a lot probably lose a lot of fans today. Because as that I'm not a huge fan of Eric about to Luther Vandross apologize I'm keepin a real you know so anyway that's the Honorable Mention I want to get in some on number one. Now if I told you that it was in a group that I've already played today then you would know of course man of course it has to be another song by outcast and this song that I want to play is very very important to me. Because it reminds me of a particular incident when one of my friends had run away from home and he came over my cousin's house and I was I was at my cousin's house and there's a portion of this video where one of the gentlemen under a few thousands on a chain gang and he runs away from the chain gang and they play this song like this kind of country song while he's he's running away and they go bling bling bling. They're playing that is Andre 3000 is run away run away in the video and they were making they were teasing my friend for for running away because he had his plastic bag with them and one thing about mental health is when you're young you never take it seriously and everything is funny because you don't know you have a found just self you don't have the words to quite express it and we're all boys were young man so we can say Hey man are you OK and I'm concerned about you so we just laugh everything's funny you see drug addicts you laugh right even though you may you may know that person that person may remind you of your mother yeah. Right your friend is starting to have a nervous breakdown you laugh at it or you laugh at it in retrospect when it happened and so when he came there with a bag in his hand we laughed but I think deep down inside we realize the severity of the incident and we realize that sooner or later the things that were troubling my friend to make him run away what happened to us and we realize it's inevitability. From the people in that room one had a nervous breakdown to the point where he never recovered right another young man from that room is there the person to run away was murdered some years later there's another individual from there this in a penitentiary forever and there was me and there was another guy he's doing OK and doing his thing but look at the numbers over half of us wound up not living productive lives in victims of circumstance but when I when I listen to this song it reminds me of that moment when we were all together and all giggling and everything was laughs and smiles and it also reminds me of the trouble that that was soon to come and this song is by its by our cast is called in due time 1997 off of the Soul Food soundtrack and I want you guys to pay to enter in the sea levels part pay attention the sea lows part and yet to see low Cielo people don't people don't remember this about c Loba Cielo was on track to be one of the greatest rappers ever before you start doing T.V. And making a whole lot more money I mean you know good for him but he was an outstanding rapper now standing lyricist and had a very beautiful voice so with no further ado this is number one self care soundtrack out in due time. Listen and see. Even when you pray the next day you get a trial and with nobody to come down at the sky who some people get that twisted some people get it twisted some people feel like. Someone else is supposed to come in solve their problems and you can pray you can have faith and you can have. Your belief system can be intact but ultimately the power is yours that song made my number one because it makes me feel really really really empowered when grief is getting to me years and years of grief you know sometimes you go through something it can't be is not a big thing necessarily maybe someone doesn't call you bad maybe someone cuts you off on the freeway maybe someone gets an attitude with you. It's not that big of a deal right but it makes you think about all those other things that have gone wrong in your past and it triggers all of the pain and all of the misery and all the misfortune that's you've had Next thing you know you you're in your bed you don't want to you don't want to get out of. Those dishes Starpower and . Clothes all over the floor and you don't want to eat you don't want to go out of the house at all and listen self care is so stream Lee important and I feel like everyone should take time take time for themselves take time to get together right but if if you're like me you need music and I need I need my music more so than I need my phone or social media more so than I need other people at times. These audits have 5 songs for me I hope people will listen saw him download them or watch the videos and you can get like me are and choose your own 5 songs I want I want to know about them on here what was Sun's help help help you to get through yeah listen how me let me know get all signed on Instagram shoot me some links to something.
