Comey upended the Campaign Just 11 days before the vote, announcing his investigators were now pouring over new emails discovered on the laptop of anthony weiner, disgraced former congressman married to clintonsicose aide, huma abedin. Two days before the election, comey revealed there was nothing there. Then just last week, comey testified about abedin, weiner and those emails. His then spouse huma abedin appears to have had a regular practice of forwarding emails for him to print out for her so she could deliver them to secretary of state. Reporter comey said abedin forwarded hundreds of thousands of emails some of which contained classified information. But the fbi admitted, comeys most recent comments were wrong and his testimony was misleading. In a letter to congress, the fbi acknowledged abedin only forwarded a small number of email to weiner. Many people calling it stunning, unprecedented, comey apparently caught completely offguard. This is the scene at lax for the fbi, former fbi director. He was there for an event and flew back to washington after learning about his firing from news reports. Comey faced intense criticism over his handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe. His termination comes as he led the investigation into possible ties between russia and Trump Campaign. We begin with lana zach and with all the details on this. Good morning. Good morning, there are lots of details on this. Many people are really questioning the optics of the timing particularly given that james comey was overseeing the Russian Investigation with ties and the potential of finding somebody in the Trump Administration who possibly could have colluded with russia. Reporter james comey boarded a plane in los angeles deciding not to attend an fbi event after learning he had been fired as head of the fbi effective immediately. President trump writing it is essential that we find leadership for the fbi that restores public trust and confidence. The white house says the president was influenced in part by the recommendation of his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, who had recused himself from the Russian Investigation. That has Senate Democrats concerned about the future of the ongoing fbi investigation into russian influence over the election. Comey was overseaing it and some saying now that his firing demonstrates a pattern. They fired sally yates. They fired fbi director comey. Reporter Chuck Schumer said a special investigator must now be appointed and if not every american will rightly suspect that the decision to fire director comey was part of a cover up. Reporter the controversial comey had drawn from democrats and republicans at various times. Just days before president ial election, comey was responsible for a bombshell announcement he would be reopening the investigation into clintons emails. He later testified on the ramifications of that decision. It makes me mildly nauseous to think we might have had impact on the election. Reporter not just democrats, kendis and diane, that are raising concerns about this possible russia connection. We are also hearing from many republicans who feel the same way, that the timing is all very fishy in their minds. We heard from the chair of the senate Intelligence Committee who said, that it further confuses an already difficult investigation that also becoming further confused in some ways by President Trump and the white house announcing he will meet with russias foreign minister today. Kendis, diane. Lana, one of the questions raised about attorney general Jeff Sessions role in this. Recused himself from the Russian Investigation now involved in the firing of man leading it. What more do we know about that . Exactly right, diane. There are questions about that. Whether or not that seems above board, insidious, at, at perhaps its worst. And we also know that Deputy Attorney general, rod rosenstein, the man who may decide if anyone gets prosecuted in connection with russia one of the ones who pushed for the firing of the fbi director leading the investigation. A lot of lawmakers who are now saying, that these questions must be answered. And we expect congress to start get together to answer the questions started today. All right. Monitoring it all closely. Lana zach live from washington. Lana, thanks. Lets go back to Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer who lana had in her story there. He told the president he was, quoting, making a big mistake. The president wasted little time in firing back on twitter. President trump called him kr kr kryin Chuck Schumer and said the senator recently stated he had no confidence in comey, then he acts so indignant. And added draintheswamp. Also overnight eric holder reacted on twitter writing, to the career men and women at the department of justice and the fbi, you know what the job entails and how to do it. Be strong and unafraid. Duty, honor, country. Of course the big question now whats next for the fbi . Who will replace comey. For now his deputy is running the bureau. 49yearold andrew mccabe, who will serve as the acting director of the fbi. Appointed to the deputy position back in january of last year by comey himself. Jeff sessions will name an interim director. The search is already on for a permanent replacement. There are discussions inside the bureau if comey will address the staff one final time. That is not clear if that will happen. Bring in abc news contributor, former fbi counterterrorism official steve gomez. Good morning. Thank you for joining us. What are you hearing from within the fbi . Well, i am hearing range of emotions. Words like someone died when this occurred. Theres shock. They dont feel like it was right the way he found out. Apparently he was in the los angeles field office. Found out from the media. A lot of people that were around. So they, they were hurt by this. Because, they could see probably, i wasnt there, but it sounds like they saw the anguish and the confusion. And there was a lot of confusion in the office. So a number of, yeah, hearing about young employees, who arent familiar with the way change occurs in fbi how they were wondering what happened next, do we come to work . Things im hearing from various people. Change in the fbi does happen, doesnt happen like this routinely. Been years since it has. So, lets talk about the investigation. How does this impact that investigation . So, there is no impact on all investigations, all fbi investigations being conducted, nationwide and throughout internationally, there is not going to be an impact. There is succession planning in place. Deputy director. Associate deputy director. Assistant directors. Every field office throughout the country has special agent in charge and assistants. Everything in place. The country has to understand nothing will happen to any investigation. I think the big question of course is how does this impact the Russian Investigation and that is something that is going to continue on. But the fact is that leadership at the very top which was overseeing this investigation, that is going to change. So i think the matter of, just ensuring that that investigation continues. Thats how the succession planning is going to occur with the bureau. Steve, one of the big words that keeps getting thrown out on both sides is trust in all of this. One big thing, people are looking for is trust in the fbi and fbi director. What kind of qualities do you think President Trump need to be looking for in a new director . Well, trust usually starts when it comes to the fbi with independent objectivity, you cant be partisan. That is one of first things that we always looked at with our director, any time a new director came in. You wanted to make sure they had those qualities. Because the fbi has to be independent when they conduct their investigation. Whatever kind of investigation it is. We all, as fbi agents and employees, had to function independently and objectively. Thats very important. You also have to be able to manage, nowadays a worldwide organization, with a sense of urgency. Because the fbi deals with urgent matters. Whoever it is that is selected as the director, they have to be able to handle any kind of situation that comes their way and prioritize it and move quickly. And then last is whoever the individual is that is selected, they have to be familiar with the judicial system, and Law Enforcement in general. This is now the pool that theyre going to be swimming in. They have to understand the way things work from the Law Enforcement standpoint thats the leadership theyre going to be showing with this type of organization. Steve, i know you are very much in touch with many former colleagues there at edgar hoover building and field offices across the country. And were in touch with them yesterday. How gut wrenching was this news . This hurts. Absolutely hurts. This hurts. It hurts me. It hurts everybody. Not only because, jim comey is a good man. And for him to depart abruptly like this. Being in a field office, l. A. Office where i worked for many, many years, and i could see him walking through the office which most directors would do. Hard to miss at 67. Yeah, absolutely. And everybody, Everybody Knows when the director is showing up. Doing a visit. Everybody is there. I cant even imagine this coming across the news screen, saying that he has been fired right there. Like i said, as i started, people described to me like someone died. And, that, that is very, very painful. And like i said, change is constant in the fbi the public need to understand the bureau is used to change. This kind of change is different. But theyre going to be able to adapt to this. Coming out of the white house. Just fired the director of the fbi. Reporter comey is out. Abruptly fired by his boss, president donald trump. As fbi director comey was accused by the democrats of helping trump win. More recently hes been a thorn in trumps side. Comeys sudden departure now clears the way for the president to name his successor. An historic day at the white house. The firing of an fbi director, by a president , is an extraordinarily rare event. It hasnt happened nearly quarter of a century. He told us the news popped up on the tv screens as comey was speaking and suddenly everyones phones exploded. Over the past few days comey landed himself in yet another controversy over Hillary Clintons emails. The focus of so much turmoil during the campaign. The fbi admitted comeys testimony was inaccurate saying only a small number of emails were forwarded by abedin and none of the forwarded emails were marked classified. A small number of them however contained information that was later deemed classified. We still dont know what comey thinks of all this. He is now headed back from l. A. On the fbis private jet. Though the president repeatedly slammed the investigation into russian meddling and denied collusion between his campaign and moscow, White House PressSecretary Sean Spicer reiterating what Kellyanne Conway said insisting the decision to fire comey was prompted by the Justice Department. Well the Deputy Attorney general, was confirmed by the Senate Two Weeks ago. He oversees the fbi who is confirmed by 946. He has been a 30year career prosecutor, some one appointed by obama as u. S. Attorney for maryland. He determined the fbi director lost his confidence. Forwarded the recommendation to the attorney general. The president agreed with it. Sean spicer there overnight.
