Hello, again. Im martha raddatz, great to have you with us. Two days after new jersey governor Chris Christies marathon press conference, the bridgegate scandal is swirling this morning. New jersey democrats are pushing to expand their inquiry beyond just the federal investigation. What happens now and how will it impact his president ial prospects . Were covering every angle. Lets get started with the latest developments from new jersey. Jim avila is there. Jim . Reporter good morning, martha. During the two hour News Conference he answered every question, except the critical one, how can this happen . Dangerously leaving that to his critics, the press and federal prosecutors. This is not the bombastic Chris Christie america knows so well, meekly walking down the steps on a humiliating apology tour. But so far, and the investigations have just begun, nothing in the more than 2,000 pages of documents posted by his political enemies have found the lie in this blanket denial. I had no knowledge or involvement in this issue, its planning or execution. Reporter what the documents do show is his aids and appointees were monitoring the traffic disaster they had created with a smokinggun email, time for traffic problems in ft lee. And christie allies had been warned of the congestion and Emergency Services had been seriously hampered. People protecting the public impaired public safety. Reporter the new documents show the pleas were ignored for four days, with christies press apparatus stone walling, and only with the new york sidestepped in were lanes reopened. Saying we have to fix this fiasco. And i will get to the bottom of this abusive decision. And hes hoping the prompt dismissal of his chief of staff bridgeet anne kelly and his political guru bill stepian, can reverse the impression that his brash style encouraged political vengeance. I am who i am, but i am not a bully. Reporter this week governor christie will attempt to change the subject with the state of the state address on tuesday. And then later in the week, goes to florida to fundraise for other republicans, leaving behind all those state legislators to whisper about impeachment, and the federal prosecutors to ponder charges. Martha. Lot to ponder. And now the former mayor of new york and a friend of christie, Rudy Giuliani is here. Mayor giuliani, thanks for joining us. Thank you, martha. Go back to september. Four days, thousands of residents stuck on the bridge. Chris christie is the chief executive of the state. I cant imagine you as new york mayor not saying what the heck is going on over there. Forget that traffic study. And yet Chris Christie didnt do that. Thats always simplistic after this happens, how could it happen, how could you not have known . How did president obama not know about the irs targeting right wing groups . Massive numbers of right wing groups but this is traffic, this affects everybody. This seems very different. Well, that affects a lot of people. And the reality is, things go wrong in an administration. And frankly, you know, he was in campaignmode at the time. During campaignmode you miss a lot of things. Youre not paying as much attention. We see that with benghazi. Plenty of examples, every administration, every president , mayor, governor, something goes wrong below them and then the press ask, gosh, how do they not know . How did they not realize . The reality is, he says he didnt realize. He says he didnt know. I think its pretty darn credible. He wouldnt make this blanket denial unless its not true. But mr. Mayor, were talking about two different things. Youre talking about him saying he didnt know there was any scandal involved in this. He had to know there was all that traffic. Well, yeah, im saying, you miss things. Things happen in an administration, things happen when youre running for reelection. After the fact is seems like how didnt they know . But the reality is you miss a lot of things when youre running a government thats as complicated as new jersey, new york or the United States. This has happened to many president s, governors, mayors, the present president three or four times where he said i didnt know. And the press says how could he not have noun . Lets talk about the culture of that office. Obviously hes dismissed his aid bridget anne kelly, and bill stepien. What about the culture of the office . What does that say about Chris Christie that they could do Something Like that . But this is what happens in political operations. I mean, people get wrong messages. It happens all the time. It happened, again, i go back to the irs scandal. The people in the irs, president obama wanted them to do this. President obama didnt want them to do this. But they got the sense because of that culture that they were supposed to target right wing groups. It was totally wrong. I think it was totally wrong for these people to have interpreted Chris Christie this way. Hes handled it the best way you can handle it. Held a press conference, flatly denied it. If its not true, hes put his political career completely at risk. Turns out theres evidence he knew about it, hes taken the risk that his political career is over. I dont think he would do that if theres any suggestion he knew about this. Do you think this goes away for Chris Christie . Have you talked to him . Yes, i think it goes away. Again, it depends on what happens. What facts come out. The other thing thats very impressive to me was, i think when this first came up, he wouldnt have made a joke had he had any knowledge. What when a politician is obfuscating, theyre going to get very careful. And during the press conference, theyre going to be careful with words like i couldnt remember, im not sure, possibly, maybe. This was very, very definitive. So im pretty sure that this is going to go away. Its going to take awhile. More inquiries. But ultimately his governorship will be the thing that gets evaluated. It wont be a plus, but not fatal. Thank you very much, mayor giuliani. And lets break it down. Nightline coanchor dan abrams joins us. The investigations, how broad can they be and can they go after any of Chris Christies emails . We havent seen any of his emails in all of this. I think theyre going to get all emails relating to the closure of those lanes on the bridge. From Chris Christie or anyone in the office. Chris christie says there are no emails that are relevant to that, we will see. The federal investigation, hes not as concerned about a possible federal crime. I dont see any possible federal crimes here. But what he is concerned about, or should be concerned about is the investigation itself. The fact its a legislative investigation. Theres a federal criminal investigation. And the question will be what do they find in connection with that that could have political fallout. Meaning do they find any correspondence, or witnesses Say Something that contradicts what christie said in the press conference . That would be my concern if i were him rather than true legal. Its the legal investigation that could lead to political fallout. And i think this could go on for a while, right . It could go on many, many months. The problem with these types of investigations is they take on a life of their own. You investigate one thing, and digging in, and lo and behold, you find something else. And wait a second, yes, we were investigating the lane closures to start with. Look at the road we are going down here. And then they move on to a different investigation. Those are the sorts of concerns you have to have if youre Chris Christie or his aids. Could be a long couple of months. Thanks, dan. Now perhaps the biggest question, how will this impact Chris Christies chances if he decides to run for president . Hes one of the gops biggest stars who grabbed the National Spotlight not only with his blowout reelection win in a blue state, but with his incredibly unique style. Heres jonathan karl. Reporter Chris Christie is the most intriguing and colorful person in politics today. A hardcharging republican who loves Bruce Springsteen and picks fights with teachers unions. Telling people how it is get the hell off the beach and get out. Reporter and occasionally telling off a constituent. Your rear ends going to get thrown in jail, idiot. Reporter and on reporters stay on topic. Are you stupid . Reporter its a trademark. Something he jokes about. Stop saying things i already said. Okay. Reporter when he went to the reagan library, they begged him to run for president. I really implore you as a citizen of this country, to please, sir, to reconsider. Go home and really think about it. Reporter he was the keynote speaker at the republican convention. And yet, hes also Barack Obamas favorite republican. Who could forget when they played carnival games together on the jersey shore board walk . Christie was first asked about the George Washington bridge allegations last month. His bombast was on display. I was the guy working the cones. You really are not serious with that question. Reporter when the facts came out, a different christie. One we hadnt seen before. I am sad to report to the people of new jersey that we fell short. Reporter contrite for the most part, apologetic, avoiding the kind of indignant denial that has backfired in scandals ranging from bill clintons i did not have sexual relations with that woman. Reporter to lance armstrong. I have never dope ed. Thats crazy. I would never do that. Reporter and Anthony Weiner this is a twitter hoax. A prank that was done. I am a victim. Reporter and while others avoided questions, christie answered and answered for nearly two hours. And john joins us now, and also here to talk about how governor christie performed in the press conference and what he should do now, the super star crisis manager, the inspiration for olivia pope character on the hit show scandal, judy smith. Welcome to you both. Thank you. The one word ive heard in the last couple of days, not the first day, is the word coverup. Nothing to show that Chris Christie did that, but lots of talk about staff and others doing that. How does it get beyond that . I think he did a good first step. The press conference, he did a great job. He set the message narrative at the top. He apologized, he took responsibility, he made some swift actions. And i like the fact he was able to make sure that he apologized to the mayor and he did all of those things in one day. Now what he does is he focuses on governing. He was very strong in pointing out during the press conference, i think, that this is not the way that he governs. This is an isolated incident. So constituents, please, judge me on the totality of the circumstances. John karl, youre watching this, you have covered a lot of scandals, and some of them havent gone so well in the end. So you look at this, listen to what judy says, whats your take . First of all, we have had scandals that are more salacious. We have people using state power to enrich themselves, enrich their friends. Its the first time ive covered a scandal with the use of state power to make people miserable. Thats what i was trying and comes down to the underlying facts. Right . This was a masterful performance at the press conference, but if theres anything that ties christie to this decision or shows he knew about it early, we heard from Rudy Giuliani himself that hes done if he knew about. I want to go to who he is, the man he is and the bully image. Play something from the press conference. Well get your reaction. Okay. This reveals youre a political bully, that your style is payback. Are you . I am who i am, but i am not a bully. Not a bully. Now you can call it aggressive, you can call it assertive, people clearly have liked that in the past. So but does is it an asset and now becomes a liability . I think its an asset. The reason why i say first of all in the particular clip, i would have not used the word bully. It was repeating the negative and felt too on the nose for me. I do think that his reputation is based on that straightshooter, speak what im thinking, tell it what i feel. And those things have helped him. I think in particular in crisis situations where you are trying to bounce back, and as we talked about earlier, moving beyond the crisis, the thing that really helps is whether you have good will and a reputation. And i think with him, those two things are going to be helpful to him in trying to push past that. Because he does have a reputation of integrity and honesty. But you never repeat the negative. No, you dont. I am not a witch. Thats exactly right. I didnt kill my wife, i didnt beat my wife. And the next day you saw a lot of the headlines say i am not a bully. Over and over again. No, absolutely. So both of you, quickly, where will this be in six months and how would you say he should handle this in six months . Stop answering questions in six months and hope this goes away . I think he should stop answering questions. We have to see what the investigation reveals. And he has to move past it. As long as theres nothing that contradicts what he said in the press conference. Hopefully theres no six months . The underlying facts are more important than the communication strategy. Did he know . The big question i have, what about bridget anne kelly, the staffer he threw under the bus. He called her an idiot, stupid. Hes going to talk. What will she say . Ask your advice. The one thing i will say, the thing so different about the scandal is its traffic. What people dont think about their commute every single day. Its different in i had sex with another woman. We care about how long it takes us to get to work. Should she talk, not talk if shes your client . Shes going to have to talk at some point. And Chris Christie is not your client. Hes not. Thanks to you both. Time for the roundtable. But first Chris Christies troubles were easy pickings for late night comics. One thing he said did seem a little bit fishy to me. I was blindsided yesterday morning. I was done with my workout. He could have said he was on his roof putting ribbons on unicorns. Would be more believable. Some they this could ruin his chances of being elected president in 2016. While Hillary Clinton said party clearly somebody is getting thrown under the bus here. Fortunately for them the bus isnt moving, its stuck in terrible, terrible traffic. Okay, the roundtable is now ready to go. Former white house Senior Adviser and abc contributor david plouffe, Illinois Republican congressman, adam kinzinger, matthew dowd and democratic strategist donna brazile. Welcome to you all. Matthew, i want to start with you if you can stop laughing. Lets talk about the way the republicans approach this. We have heard, from lindsey graham, the drudge report, rush limbaugh. I want to read from the Washington Post the coming gop campaign is likely to be neither tidy or predictable. A power struggle is underway between the establishment and the insurgent wings, meaning the Business Elite and the poplist tea party factions. What do you see as the fallout for the republicans from Chris Christie . What happens . Thats why the importance has been raised so much, because this is uncharted territory for republicans. They normally are lined up behind a dominant candidate that has the money, is going to be the nominee. Its been that way for 50, 60, 70 years. Now in a nominating process that the republicans are faced with without a leading candidate. But the only preseason favorite in all of this was Chris Christie. The preseason favorite that could bridge the divide, work in the opposing parts of the republican party, and attract moderates. And they were so but were in this uncharted territory. He was the lighthouse that everybody could go to a safe hasher harbor to. Thats a question mark now. And right now among republicans, there is a search. They have a tremendous opportunity, martha. This is an election where republicans, if you look at historical patterns should win the presidency in 2016. If you look at historical patterns. But they dont have a candidate and a message that matches up well right now. One that was just injured yes. What do democrats think . Well, first of all, he was winning the invisible primary because there was no one else visible. Chris christie sort of popped on the National Stage after hurricane sandy. He was the fixit governor who didnt mind embracing president obama. He was taking care of the people. Telling teachers to sit down, shut up, and this controversy erupts. His brand is tarnished. Hes in a nowin position. And the republicans have to go back to the drawing board to find someone like him to run in 2016. Heres why, he won in a landslide in a blue state, picked up women, picked up half the hispanic vote, onethird of the democratic vote. He was raising money, and now people will continue to raise questions as to whether or not he knew. And if i mean, i still cant believe that some woman on his staff, a deputy chief of staff or some man or whoever was the only person involved in shutting down a huge bridge. This is not the Mississippi River bridge, this is the George Washington bridge. And donna, that take us to the staff. You worked in the white house for many, many years, i assume youre trying to please your boss. I assume youre trying to read your bosss mind. And you look at Chris Christie saying, i cant believe it happened. I just cant believe it happened. I think that and i think his performance this week shows some of the great appeal he has. He got away with this, i have 60,000 people working with me. These people are close to him, the campaign manager, deputy chief of staff. Every decision you made, you did with the thought of what would my boss think about this. Ran anything important by him now. He wouldnt be so strong if he knew. Its very tortuous for them. Hes on a high wire if anything comes out. Theres a lesson. Youre the governor of new jersey. Theres no tv stations in new jersey. The scrutiny that he was under is nothing like he is under now. Not many people can survive. If he can get through this and the story holds up, he might be better. Its a Lesson Learned early. I think theres a lot more shoes to drop here. They might not get to his closet, so to speak. But these investigations but the news media and the doj and in new jersey are going to turn up a lot more here. I want to add to that quickly, and keep in mind, if he knew, were going to find out. Right . Its not my position to find out. But i think he took the bull by the horns, held people accountable, fired people. And a big deference than the administration handled a lot of things that have happened, irs, benghazi, you can keep your Health Insurance if you want it. Nobodys been fired over that. And what were seeing is a big difference. If he comes out of this untarnished personally, this may set him up for 2016. I want to move on just quickly. Big story this week that went away pretty quickly, and thats the publication of the book by robert gates. The defense secretary. The First Defense secretary in history to write about a sitting president. But he also wrote about a couple of other people, speaking of 2016. He said about joe biden and Hillary Clinton first of all, joe biden, i think he has been wrong on nearly every major Foreign Policy and National Security issue over the past four decades. On hillary, hillary told the president that her opposition to the 2007 surge in iraq had been political because she was facing him in the iowa primary. That offended secretary gates enormously. Pretty strong accusation. What does this do for the race for biden and clinton . If you read the book in its entirety. Ive read only exerts. Ive read most of it. All right. He makes good policy statements that he agreed with the president on. In fact, he agreed with the Vice President on the policy in libya. And agreed with clinton on some things. He makes a lot of personal statements about these individuals, but you know what i didnt find in the excerpts . I didnt find any insight into National Security. Some of the toughest decisions. This guy served at a time when we were embroiled in two wars, from 2006 to 2011. And to come out with a book with petty, vindictive things. Its a long book. Change the race at all . Im not a fan of these books. I am a fan of books that add value to the history. I think the tellall books that come out in the midst of the administration, and people have a total right to do these books. I dont think its helpful for books in the midst of a presidency. Write it afterwards. But he didnt add much value. He said hillary can be political at times and made decisions. Wow, thats breaking go very quickly around. And were going to come back. Very quickly, Hillary Clinton, Chris Christie the frontrunners a year from now . Sure but, you know, theres basically lally 50 lifetimes b now and then. Everything is going to change. I think jeb bush too. The more hes out, people will like him. I predict a year from now, we will be talking about another candidate whos lit the fire in one of the parties. I agree with matt for a change. Come back and see in a year. As we said, much more with the roundtable ahead. New warnings about security in russia. Are our athletes safe . Breaking details next. Republicans jump into the debate over income inequality. And new fed chair janet yellen and gm Ceo Mary Barra take center stage. Will it be a landmark year for female leaders . Our experts weigh in, including the First Air Force female fighter pilot. Just another day at the office. The best office in the world. That began much the same way ours did. In a little dorm room 2713. This magic moment more roundtable next. But first, take a look at the newest star at the Smithsonian National zoo. We got a sneak peek at bao bao getting ready for her big public debut this week. You might catch her on a nap. The four and a half month old panda sleeps 20 hours a day. Alf month old panda sleeps 20 hours a day. Fifteen minutes could save youn car insurance. Insuranc. Everybody knows that. Did you know there is an oldest trick in the book . What . Trick number one. Lookest over there. Ha ha. Madeest thou look. So endeth the trick. Hey. Yes. Geico. Fifteen minutes could save you. Well, you know. A look at the massive security set up in sochi, russia, as thousands prepare to travel to the olympics and now a new state Department Warning has american athletes taking extraordinary precautions. Abc is in moscow with the breaking details. Reporter good morning, martha. The new warning from the state department urges americans at the olympics to be on the lookout for a terror attack. The travel warning says theres no specific threat to americans, but it wants to be particularly vigilant on public transportation. It comes after deadly terror attacks rocked the region. And after russias mostvaunted terrorist urged followers to target the games. President putin has deployed tens of thousands of and troops and a massive surveillance program. All of which means these olympics will take place on lockdown. The fbi is sending agents to sochi in case they can be of help. But the u. S. Ski team is not taking chances. They have hired a private firm to evacuate them in case of emergency. The state Department Also warning americans about russias antigay law, saying that anyone thought to be promoting ho homosexalty could face jail time. We are back in the roundtable. And turn to the war in afghanistan. We talked about the wars in iraq and afghanistan. One thing points to president obama. He said as i sat there, i thought that the president doesnt trust his commander, cant stand karzai, doesnt believe in the strategy and doesnt consider the war to be his. For him, its all about getting out. He also said that he thought the president supported the troops, but not the mission. One of the things secretary gates did here is not only talk about a sitting president , but a sitting commander in chief. You are still in the military as a reservist. Did two tours in iraq. Does this undermine president obama as commander in chief . You know, it may chip away at that a little bit, but i might have to take a different view than the panel. Its important for it to come out. Nobodys been critical of this administrations Foreign Policy, both in iraq and afghanistan by and large. We havent heard a lot of it. For gates to say behind the scenes, this is the truth, they opposed the surge for political reasons. By the way, using politics on Foreign Policy is terrible. A leader should never do that. And in afghanistan im a believer in the war in afghanistan that we can and should win. When was the last time you heard the president of the United States tell the American People why were there and the interests is . He hasnt talked about it, hes avoided it. And the security agreement, theyre floating nine or 10,000 american troops when general allen and generals on the ground recommended at least 15,000 to accomplish the mission. This is important because america is paying for this, and its our men and women over there. Could it have waited a few years . The book . A book. Yeah. After the president is out of office. And i want to go back to that point too. As, you know, i have been around a lot of our service members. They love bob gates. Do they hear him saying the president didnt care about the mission, he wasnt invested in that and saying obamas not a great guy. Go back to whether the book should go out, free press rights. He can do that and all that. From a standpoint of governing and all that, books that are tellall books. This wasnt a book that added a lot of value that sort of said we didnt know that. Everybody basically knew the president was against the war wanted to be out of. And asked serious questions of the generals and commanders. And there one thing about the book, with his criticism was of obama was he supported the troops more than the mission. Theres a quote in the book that says this, this is from bob gates, even thinking about the troops, i would lose my composure. With increasing frequency. I realized i was beginning to regard protecting them as my highest priority. And i knew this loss of objectivity was the time to leave. Thats disturbing. You basically have a secretary of defense who basically says you should support the mission more than the troops. When you start supporting the troops as a military guy, i take a quick issue with that. As a commander, if i worry only about the safety of the people, ill never accomplish the mission. The reality is you have to take that into account. But your highest calling is to achieve that the commander in chief and country calls on you. Get in there on that. Yeah, get in there on that. In terms of that excerpt, president obama campaigned in 08 on adding troops to afghanistan. He believed in what he did. He didnt have trust in his commander, david petraeus, he named him cia director. But he talks about him not having trust in the military. He has deep trust. The president s job is to ask tough questions and make decisions based on the overall interests of the country. Not everybody in the military agreed with the decision to end the iraq war and pull the troops out. Not everyone agreed with the time linn in afghanistan. But they are tough decisions and the same as when what he committed to the American People. But secretary gates were involved in confidential meetings in the situation and other places. So president obamas crime, i guess, and you, congress, and thank you your service, was that he questioned the generals . Thank god somebody questioned the general. We have been there for a long time. And the country had become weary of the war, weary of our mission. Not understanding why we were there. They didnt see the afghanistan take responsibility, step up, mr. Karzai. Is he with us . Not with us . The president had every right to question what was the strategy at the time. It wasnt about the troops, it was about the Mission Going forward. Thats what the president was elected to do. He had other military advisers in the room. He has the right to question. He should. If bob gates said he never questioned the military generals, i would be critical of that. He absolutely should. The problem is when they say when hes engaging american troops in a mission he doesnt believe in, or a strategy he didnt believe would be successful. As i said, im for winning the war in afghanistan, but if i thought the president thought we never could, i would be critical that he sent 20,000 troops to do what we couldnt do. We see whats happening in iraq today. I think first up, as you know, i had a son who served in iraq, and as a parent, i want the leaders the first priority, when they send our men and women over there, its keeping them healthy and their wellbeing. But theres a bigger, broader thing, two major wars in the last 50 years. The vietnam war and the iraq war. 2 3 trillion spent with no gain. No gain. Thousands and thousands of lost men and women, and i think that we should we swung way too much over to the idea that we can fight these wars, limited things, and major accomplishments. And more to do we want to do this . I want to turn on this to domestic politics in just a moment. But i cannot pass up what you believe should happen in iraq. We have alqaeda flying flags in fallujah. I was in fallujah the day before u. S. Troops pulled out. That was the flash point. We lost almost a hundred marines there fighting. You think we should employ air strikes . Yeah. This is al qaeda, not an internal sunni shia thing. They shouldnt feel safe. If they exist, they should not feel safe. If they are in fallujah, they should not feel safe. What end . To help the Iraqi Government to push them out. We should side with them who have been siding with iran and russia absolutely. And you think thatll solve the problem. I dont know if itll solve the problem, but itll help push alqaeda out of fallujah. The problem exists because theres no policy in syria. That has expanded it everywhere. Alqaeda in fallujah my goodness i dont think hes going to get resources to do that. No troops on the ground. I agree. No troops on the ground. And i dont think youre going to see air strikes with this president. No. The problem is when democracy is imposed from the outside from the top down it never works. And iraq is a perfect explanation of why it doesnt work. We have to move to domestic policy. We wont have any time. Very quickly. This week, of course, you had the unemployment report which was not very good. The jobs report gaining 74,000 jobs. And the war on poverty, donna. First of all, the war on poverty. Lyndon johnson said were going to wage an unconditional war on poverty. More than just domestic programs. It was basically sending a message to the country, the richest country on the planet that we can do better. We can lift people out of poverty. It was an education program. Im glad were celebrating that milestone. Unemployment insurance, its up to senator reid getting the six or seven republicans back on the same page. Figuring out a way to help 1. 3 million americans. If we dont help them, this is going to hurt the economy, create more unemployment. Employment insurance is something we should guarantee to people still out there looking for work. Do you support this . Yeah, i mean, look, if we can pay for it and he can provide something. Ill take a look at what it is. The reality is, we live in a terrible economy. The best Unemployment Insurance we can get people is a job. Get them an opportunity to come back. Look, a little selfmedicine for our party, we have to do a much better job of showing our compassion for the poor. We have it, dont articulate it. My father ran a homeless shelter for 25 years. I was raised in this environment. We need to talk as republicans about how conservative policies arent based on balancing a checkbook. We want a kid born in inner city chicago to have the same opportunity as a kid born in massachusetts or denver. Thank you all. And up next, prominent women on the National Stage. This magic moment it is the story of where every great idea begins. And of those who believed they had the power to do more. Dell is honored to be part of some of the worlds great stories. That began much the same way ours did. In a little dorm room 2713. This magic moment [ male announcer ] if we could see energy. What would we see . The billions of gallons of fuel that get us to work. Wed see all the electricity flowing through the devices that connect us and teach us. Wed see that almost 100 of medical plastics are made from oil and natural gas. And an industry that supports almost 10 million american jobs. Life takes energy. And no one applies more technology to produce American Energy and refine it more efficiently than exxonmobil. Because using energy responsibly has never been more important. Energy lives here. I was very honored that the nasa chose me to be the first woman. I guess its a momentous day in my life. There are no doors we cannot unlock. Historic firsts for women throughout the years. And 2014 is no exception. Two more women jumping into the National Spotlight just this week. Our expert panel weighs in shortly, but first, heres abcs Rebecca Jarvis. Both mary barra and janet yellen dont have errors, they get the job done. Reporter barra, a home grown stanlt who started at gm in 1980 expecting pontiacs off the assembly line. Its in my blood. Reporter since then, shes become a force in gm. Overseeing manufacturing and overhauling the car design. Fortune naming her one of the 50 most powerful women in business. Reporter and now 100 years after it was founded, the Federal Reserve getting its first female leader, janet yellen. Earned a ph. D. From yale, and went on to run the San Francisco fed where she famously flagged concerns about subprime mortgages. Its the classic story of how a very smart woman gets ahead. Keep your head down, disagree quietly, dont look to get press about it. Reporter until now, when y yellen and barra both step into the National Spotlight. For this week, Rebecca Jarvis, abc news, new york. Thanks to rebecca. Dig in now with the experts this morning. Liza mundy, author of the richer sex, reshma saujani, founder of girl who is code and author of women who dont wait in line. Carly fiorina, former chairman and ceo of hewlett packard. And lcolonel jeannie leavitt. The First Female Fighter Pilot and Wing Commander overseeing about 5,000 people. Jeannie leavitt, allowed me to be the backseat driver on a flight recently in her f15. Thanks for that, it was thrilling. Carly, i want to start with you. When you were named the ceo of hewlett packard, there were seven female ceos in the fortune 500. Thats correct. What happens now . Clearly theres been progress. I was the first woman to lead a fortune 50. There were only seven. Now there are 23. And you have women assuming absolute top positions of power and authority in industries and politics as well. And yet, the data overall hasnt shifted much. For example, we have less than 20 of elected officials are women, less than 20 of Corporate Officers are women, that number hasnt changed in decades. And women remain the most underutilized resource in the world and the most subjugated people in the world. 70 of the people in abject poverty are women. While theres great progress on the one hand, theres insignificant progress on the other. We have to change our mind set. This is no longer simply about equality or diversity or inclusive witness, although thats important. Its enlightened selfinterest. Women are an underutilized resource. We need all the brain power, smarts and heart we can get to capture our opportunities and solve the problems. When women are not fully utilized, as we clearly still are not, were leaving opportunity on the table and were leaving problems unsolved. Colonel jeannie leavitt, i want to go to you, theres no profession that could have been harder to break into than the fighter community. Te testosterone, it was the era of the top gun movie, all that glamour. Listening to male leaders on the hill, they were saying this will ruin the military if we let female aviators in. Take you back 20 years when they presented you first to the press. I realize that not every person wanted this to happen. Some did, some didnt. But i realize its pretty irrelevant. As much as you probably hate looking at those old hairdos, how did you do it . What was your mindset . I remember because i covered it back then. They were trotting you all out as these new great women. Men didnt like that so much in that community. Youre right. There was a lot of resistance to women flying fighters. That community had been maledominated for many, many years. There was a lot of resistance at first. They didnt want things to change. And that was the fear that everything was going to change and that women would be there just because they were women. I think the air force did a great job of opening up the opportunity, but not forcing women into that career field. So women had the opportunity, and if they were competent and had the abilities, they were able to go into that. Thats what you did. You put your head down and flew airplanes. Absolutely. Thats the advice you would give others, im sure. Go to you, and talking about moving forward, whats the biggest problem . Do we have to change how we talk about this . There have been great leaps for females. I think we need a new play book. Im interested in whether mary barra is going to pick a successor thats a woman. Make her team more female. Women are powerful. 20 million of us make hiring decisions. Make up 60 of americas wealth, 85 of all consumer purchases made by women. 34 of middlemanagement. What are we going to do to up lift one another . We have to hire and promote one another. We have to vote for one another. We are the majority. And we have to start acting like the majority. I think thats the question. Because i really believe that sponsorship is the new feminism. What we do for one another. How we elevate one anothers leadership. Thats the difference. What has to happen as far as youre concerned . I think what we see now with women being elevated to these top offices, is that we can accept now culturally women as leaders. Thats a big change in the last 20 or 30 years, accepting women in top leadership and power. I think we have to look at whats going on in the middle areas and whats keeping women from reaching to the top. We need to engage men in the conversations and men in the housework. Men in the housework. A number of states are passing paid maternity and paternity laws so men are encouraged to get involved in the home and child rearing and child care from the very first stages. That changes the dynamics in the home permanently and enables women to spend time in the work force. 60 of the college and University Students are female. And we need to harness this talent and training and preparation and education and keep women in the work force. Is there any part of you, when you look at the statistics, i think its 15 female law partners, ands that a kind of a touchy question, are women avoiding that . Are women making these choices on purpose . Are they saying, you know what, i do want to divide my time. I want to have a richer, fuller life and not climb this ladder. I think its true that women still have a heavier burden in terms of making those difficult choices around worklife balance. Its clearly true. But i also think that now what were up against are the real powerful forces called the status quo. And the fact that people are more comfortable with people like themselves. So if you have a male power structure, men are more comfortable with people like them. Men. Women are still perceived as a greater risk. I think the most important thing is for women to be able to choose to have the opportunity to choose the life they truly want to live. Very quickly. Very quickly. What would you tell young women today . That you mentor . Quick advice. Do your best, dont take no for an answer. Just strive to reach your dreams. Fail fast, fail hard, fail often. Yeah, persevere, expect setbacks and dont blame yourself for the setbacks. Do the hard stuff. Take a risk, take a chance. And i would say keep a sense of humor. You have to. Thanks, everyone.
