You see a Police Officer, you go in the other direction. You nod, you smile, you do whatever you have to do to have no interaction whatever. Reporter the father of three, author of many books on race and class. We all all kinds of rules with our black boys. You dont go out after night, dont wear a hoodie, sunglasses, dont do anything people can prong their biases and stereotypes of what the dangerous black boy is supposed to look like. Reporter those in this room not only black and white but blue. Let me ask all the officers, how does it make you feel lawrence is telling his kids, if you see a cop, got other way. People forget the cops arent robots, theyre human beings. Behind that i bleed the same color as everybody else in this room. Were all a part of some group. Im a muslim, a black man, a Police Officer. I feel like even though you have greatness in all three groups, a lot of times the best of those groups and the rest of those groups get treated like the worst of those groups. How do you account for the statistics that africanamerican men are at a 2. 5 times rate of being shot by a cop or Excessive Force during a Police Encounter as opposed to a white guy . Never once did i have any officer of any race put his vest on strap up his gun belt, put his shirt on, and say, i want to go out there and kill a certain type of person today. Reporter hes the founder of Blue Lives Matter in new york city. Former officer andy dwyer is a member. He knows firsthand what its like to lose a loved one in the line of duty, his brother anthony. I hear someone like former mayor Rudy Giuliani make ridiculous statements that black lives matter is inherently racist, theyre not saying that blacks are better than whites, theyre just saying that they matter as well. Nothings scarier than being an unarmed person looking at someone who is armed, being frightened of you. Reporter bedford and his wife chelsea married two years ago. They have a mixedrace child and a white child from chelseas previous relationship. She says her eyes were opened to the differences her children may face while she and bedford were dating. There were times i was like, youre being paranoid, theyre not out to get you, calm down. Then we had an experience where he called me and he said, i need you to pick me up from the police station. And i said what . He said, my tags are expired. I pull into the parking lot. I see his car. I see Six Police Officers around his car. They all had their lights on. And i just watched them yank him out of his car and shove him onto the ground. And i could see his face. And they handcuffed him. And i know my husband. You know . There was a cop kneeling on his back. There was a cop handcuffing him. That was the first time that i thought to myself, this is a problem. Reporter for aidan day, it was that first conversation in front of our cameras more than a year ago that opened his eyes. What did you think about the story and a boys view not far from his view of the world . Reporter aidan, now 12 going on 30. I thought i mean, it was kind of interesting how different the conversation was. I think its weird wore both 10 years old, we live close to each other, and were still we have such different lives. Just because of how we look. What did you think of the white familys interaction with race and the conversations they hadnt had . I wasnt surprised at all. White fathers dont have to tell their sons to be careful when they deal with the police. I thought that they were honest and i thought that they were real. Theres a lot of black Police Officers who obviously were black before they were Police Officers. The worst thing that police hear on a daily basis, a parent will look at the Police Officer and tell their child, hes going to get you, hes going to take you to jail. Really . Yes. They do that a lot. Thats a problem. A lot of times when we hear that, well go to our car and get a coloring book or a teddy bear and say, hey, heres this, you dont have to be afraid of us. Even if your parent had that fear, we dont want you to have that fear. Reporter so often its conversations like these, a bridging of gaps, discovery of Common Ground that can change the way we see each other. So far weve gotten along great.
