Rampage, will be right back. This is a special edition of nightline california shooting rampage. Good evening. Tonight there are fastmoving developments in the california shooting rampage. New information coming in. Authorities naming the two deceased suspects. Sayid farook, an american citizen, 28 years old, and his wife or girlfriend, tashin malik, age 27. Heavy gunfire and scenes of bloody chaos leaving at least 14 dead tial 17 inju dead, 17 injured, after the gunmen walked in and opened fire. Matt gunman has been following the story all day. Whats the latest at this hour . Reporter thats right, byron, were learning so much more about this couple, farook and malik. They were in fact a couple. And that when police finally cornered them, crunching their car between those two armored cars in that spectacular shootout, they were body armed with assault rifles and also had handguns with them. Farook was an employee of San Bernardino county health department. He was apparently an inspector. Had been with the department for about five years. And he was in that building. You can still see the lights on right behind me. During that daylong series of workshops. Now eyewitnesses who were there, colleagues of his, say that there was no anger, he didnt seem to be upset this seemed like any ordinary day, and that allegedly hed been at the Christmas Party the year before. He left about 20 minutes before the shooting started. The next time anybody saw him, Police Identified his body after they managed to corner him and his alleged wife. Now a big sigh of relief being breathed here in San Bernardino. There was a suspicion that there was a third shooter on the loose. Police have said that has not happened. But still a massive amount of police presence. Still outside this building. Weve heard a series of explosions over the past couple of hours. And that was Police Detonate lag they say were three explosive devices left by that couple. Byron . Abcs matt gutman, thank you. This has been a difficult day. Chilling 911 calls. And swift reaction from police. We initially put out that we had information there were upwards of three shooters. Right now as we continue to drill down on information and the witness statements that we have, it really looks like we have two shooters and were pretty comfortable the two shooters that we believe went into the building are the two shooters that are deceased up on San Bernardino avenue. Reporter late tonight a small moment of relief for a city on edge. Police announcing that two attackers, 28yearold syed farook, 27yearold tashin malik, are now dead, killed in a violent shootout on the streets of San Bernardino. We dont have the motive at this point. Reporter in trying to find answers as to why, these shooters took the lives of at least 14 people and injured 17 others. Multiple shots were fired. Were getting a suspect last seen wearing a black ski mask, all black clothing, carrying a shotgun. Reporter the first reports coming in around 11 00 a. M. All of a sudden gunfire starts. Reporter kathys sister denise was inside the Inland Regional Center when the two attackers, dressed in assaultstyle loathing, entered and opened fire. Everyone hit the ground, tried to get under tables. A chair happened to fall over, that someone knocked down, so she also was able to use that as a barricade. Then she said she felt a sting, you know in her lower side of her back. And then she knew she was shot. Reporter she was one of the lucky ones to survive. Its heartbreaking to know theres people out there that just want to harm people. Reporter terry pettittes daughter was inside. Shooting at my work, people shot, in the office waiting for cops. Pray for us. Reporter a text message no parent wants to receive. Someone had come in and started shooting. And they ran into an office and shes hiding with some other people. Reporter witnesses outside describing a barrage of bullets. I was going home, all of a sudden boom yeah. It was like right here. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom they said they were on the loose i walked behind the building and heard the shots. Reporter the gunmen firing inside a large Conference Room where the department of Public Health was holding a training session. All black clothing, black marchg, victims down reporter other worried families received phone calls directly from loved ones of the horror unfolding inside. She just said that she was in a room. There were shooters. Reporter olivia navarros daughter janelle, a case manager for special needs children, called her mother. Have you been able to get ahold of your daughter . Just the phone call and then the text. Reporter frank montes waiting anxiously for his niece. He tells my colleague matt gutman they spoke on the phone. She said something about three shooters, machine guns. She was outside when it happened on her break . Yeah. Then what happened . They hit the floor, they ran inside to their Managers Office and barricaded themselves. You seem pretty nervous. Yes. Still upset. But shes okay . Shes okay. But i just want to comfort her. Reporter still many desperately trying to make contact with their loved ones. I havent been able to contact my boyfriend. Hes in there. Him and his brother. If you see this, ryan, call me, let me know you and your brother are okay. Reporter Juan Hernandes was staying at a hotel across the street. Just a bunch of shots, multiple shots going off like crazy. Just one right after the other. And as i came out, then we had seen a black suv flying down the street. What i saw looked like one guy that was wearing military fatigues. Reporter within minutes a massive Law Enforcement response. S. W. A. T. Teams wearing body armor closing in. Rifles drawn. Making entry through the back door, east side. Reporter a nurse filming as the operation unfolded. Theyre all geared up, rifles and everything. Rifles . Rifles and everything. Reporter several down in the Conference Room, several down. Two suspects both dressed in black and inside the business on the south side is what were being told. I need some medical aid in here immediately. They went into active protocols, the things we train for. They immediately entered the building in search of the suspects. Reporter paul la croixs son was also inside. He says the alarms went off and they were all told to hunker down and hide, shelter in place. Reporter he was among those evacuated as lawful began usher people from the building with their hands in the air to make sure attackers werent blending in with the crowd. Police patted each person down. Patted us down, checked our bags, checked our registration i. D. S, now were in the parking lot. Reporter 45 minutes after the first call this Chilling Police radio dispatch. The hunt now on for possibly three gunmen. The suspects, possibly all three, fled in a black suv. Reporter marcus aguileras wife works at the facility and got out safely. She said the guy came in next to her office and started shooting. They locked themselves in, in her office. They seen bodies on the floor. Reporter a triage area set up in this intersection at a nearby golf course. The injured carried away on stretchers to nearby hospitals. We did receive five Adult Patients which stemmed from the original incident in San Bernardino. Of those five patients, two are critical but stable. Two are fair. And one is still being assessed. And all five do remain in the hospital. Reporter s. W. A. T. Teams still inside the huge building complex going room room, looking for victims and any explosives that attackers might have left behind. That device they found, they do have it and theyre taking it out of the building now. Reporter unclear at this point whether it was an explosive. Preliminary information indicates these are people that came prepared. That they were dressed and equipped in a way to indicate they were prepared. And they were armed with long guns, not handguns. Reporter also unclear the motivation behind the deadly attack. I know one of your questions is going to be is this a terrorist incident . I will tell you right now we do not know. Reporter the brotherinlaw of suspect syed farook expressed sadness for the victims. The investigation is going on. I have no idea why would he do that, why would he do Something Like this, i have absolutely no idea. Im in shock myself. Reporter while the events unfolded, president obama spoke strongly on gun control. The one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of Mass Shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. Were back with the special edition of nightline, the deadly california shooting rampage. Bloody streets in a violent standoff between the police and alleged suspects. Around 3 00 p. M. This afternoon, a massive manhunt for the armed gunmen in california came to a head. We are in pursuit of the suspect vehicle. Weve got shots fired out the back window. Reporter our affiliate kabc on the scene hover above this black suv that the authorities have been searching for for three hours. Weve got multiple officers here, officers running, back east now, chasing, now on foot. Look at all those units. This is where a suspect is at. Multiple shots that were fired. Reporter windows blown out. The front door ajar. Police crouching at a safe distance away. But this was the scene moments earlier captured on camera by neighbors. Holy oh my gosh guys, theres cops all over the [ bleep ] yard, holy [ bleep ]. Reporter this was the shootout that our cameras missed. One neighbor out in the front yard. And another crouching down in his garage. What sounds like fireworks is a firefight. Police raining bullets on that suv. The left side drivers side completely blown out. This was a very, very graphic shootout. Reporter a body lying in the street feet away. The black suv riddled with bullets. One suspect still inside. As police run into position, single file, up across the lawn. We can see tactical teams moving up the sidewalk, looking for positions of advantage right now. Police are going to run in single file because it makes you less of a target. More officers using concealment and cover behind this post, behind this hedge line. Start moving units out of the way to clear the way for the bearcat. Bearcats are moving out, everybody else take cover. Reporter five minutes later two Armored Vehicles approach the suv from both sides. You basically box a person in. So with a car in the front, a car in the back, and many times one on the side, theres no place for the car to go. Reporter minutes later, special vehicle called a tac cat moves in armed with a ballistic shield. The whole point of Armored Vehicles in a Law Enforcement setting is exactly how they use this particular event. Where you take the vehicles and you use them as cover to protect you from obviously other firearms or potentially other explosives. So by using the vehicles theyve given themselves a couple of things. Cover, concealment, and also it allows them to sort of take their time. Reporter officers cautiously approaching. But it appears the suspect inside is already dead. Two suspects killed at the scene. One male, one female, both armed and dressed in what mest describe as dark tactical gear. They were dressed in kind of assaultstyle closing i think is probably the best way to term it. They are both armed with assault rifles, they are both armed with hand guns. Reporter but all afternoon authorities have been looking for up to three suspects. One person of interest was seen fleeing the scene. I dont have any information on who that person is and we certainly do not know if they were involved, its possible they were not. Reporter a person of interest was detained in a nearby neighborhood but police are now confident the shooting involved just two suspects. So we initially put out that we had information that there were upwards of three shooters. Right now as we continue to drill down on information and the witness statements that we have, it really looks like we have two shooters. Reporter the investigation expanding to this home in nearby read lands, california, that authorities believe is connected to the shooting. Going to use a robot and probably tactical vehicles to go up to this house. The reason why is theres been discussions all day about potential explosives. Even the police chief mentioned there might be a pipe bomb at the initial crime scene. So keeping that in mind, keeping in mind that youre deing with such megaviolent people, you want to make sure youre not walking into a booby trap. If you send a robot in, if it triggers something, so be it. No one else is harmed. It also gives you the opportunity to send it in and then it can be your eyes and ears inside the house. And once you feel like that its sufficiently cleared at least maybe the first floor of that residence, then you make a tactical entry after that. Reporter tonight the search continues for evidence, including as to their motive. For now police have the message for the community that was today shaken to its core. So the message not only for the city but for this entire region is, we understand people are scared and we understand that theres concern that there may be more folks out there.
