There was not one single moment where i felt the shark was trying to attack, was interested in eating me. They could have killed you in a second. No matter how much safety precautions we took they could have eaten men a me in a second. Reporter it is to show that their reputation is dead wrong. Which is why this isnt the first time showing humans getting cozy with the oceans apex predators. There really is experience. Reporter mark healy is a surfer self proclaimed water man in hawaii. That moment when you are close enough to a large shark to touch it. There are things you see as far as muscle definition and, things that never really transfer on to film. That just, really are impactful. Reporter there are shark savants like mark healy and then thrill seekers like this australian who used a cage sort of. I tornado arouurned around, shark, threw the cage behind me. And kept me from getting eaten. Got to thank the cage, really. Reporter dont try that at hope. But sharks do bite the so far this year there have been 12 confirmed bites and just this month, a woman was chomped by a small shark in floridas intercoastal. That shark was believed 4 feet long. The sharks frasier danced were longer. We traveled to the bahamas meeting up with frasier and the conversationist. They acknowledged the risk in the blue mermaid performance. She is out there exposing herself. A huge part of this is about trust. She is literally putting her life in our hand. Every time. Because she is down at the bottom of the ocean, weighted down. If we didnt do our job, she dies. Still, critics Like International shark attack, call frasiers type of performance a stunt, telling abc news, such practices are not only dangerous but counterproductive in that the eventual backlash that will occur once she gets bitten will be directed at the man eating shark rather than at the stupid human trick. I suited up to get a closer look myself. Uncaged well supervised. A single bite. Even a nugget bite from one of these sharks could kill us. And we would bleed out before we would get to the boat. But underwater hannah is holding her breath for 90 second at a time. Again and again. Her only life line, the safety diver giving her gulps of air. As the team baits the sharks, we suddenly fie lly find ourselvesn the middle of sharknado. Hendricks and i communicate wirelessly underwater. So it is amazing, right now you and i are talking. And the shark right there. You didnt have that benefit. All of her training and all of her preparation. It is the day before her final dance with the sharks. And she is prepping for the gentle headtohead encounter. After putting on her mermaid suit and swimming underwater for hours. It is all too much. Are you okay . Not really. I am feeling wretched. My ears. That one. And my back is completely out. A rib out of place . Yeah, every time i wreath in there is a sharp stabbing pain. Reporter she sprained her bank and the expedition they spent months planning could bea bust. It is a tense night. The next morning she is creeky but game. This is the moment of truth. Going down. Last night was really, really rough. I didnt think i would be getting in the water. The ear cleared up. Worked on the back. Got ready. Conditions are perfect. This is it. This is the last try. Reporter everyone understands the stakes. Changing into a mermaid sea goddess isnt easy. Hours of hair and makeup. Wow these things are so heavy. We especially created them. Added six pound of lead weights to the bottom. If you wanted to kick up and swim up could you . Frasier leaves her tail on the boat this type, so as to not look like shark food. Everyone suits up. And we get the green light for the dive. This is the most dangerous part of the whole shark dive, actually getting into the water, sit down and lie down on that step. You see there. And then look down into the water to see where the sharks are. Because, the last thing we want to do is look like something the sharks eat. Down below, frasier makes the nearly impossible look effortless. The divers working hard to fend off sharks, with their bare hands. My guide tell me these sharks arent fauxes, they actually lick like affection when i learned firsthand, when a nurse shark comes in for a cuddle. Hannah goesen f ein for the muc anticipated smooch. She gets close. You see her bowing her head again and again. But no kiss. Turn out these man eating sharks are pretty shy. Im matt guttman for nightline in the bahamas. Theyre not just identical twins, they spent most of the first year of their lives fused at the chest. Now lovely half of all conjoined twins end up as stillbirths. Tonight Robin Roberts celebrates the 18 year journey of sisters who beat the odds and a sistery bond. I can tell us apart perfectly. Reporter you would never know it by looking at twin sisters, today, but 18 years ago when they were born, they were fused together at the chest. They were conjoined twins. When people talk to us, you just seem so close. And i think being conjoined you can look at a picture, and they really were close. Its true. Like the physical aspect of it is 100 true emotionally. Reporter i am tickled. Because you can make little now, but back in 1996, hearing their daughters were conjoined was difficult news for their parents. Of course our mind went completely blank the minute she said conjoined twins. That was a long, hard, horrible weekend. I think the biggest thing was a lack of information that we had on the situation. There just wasnt anything good on the internet. It was all one baby survives separation. The other died. Or circus acts. There was nothing good. There was no good stories that was the worst. Yeah. It was definitely a roller coaster. Doctors at childrens memorial herman hospital in houston did everything to ensure a Safe Delivery of the hospitals first case of conjoined twins. I was just taken aback. This is such a rare, rare event wecht c we cannot promise anything. 50 end up stillbirth. 25 end up not surviving. Undertogether the question y were survivable or not. They were conjoined the front part at the liver and lower part of the breast bone. Importantly the heart was not shared. I didnt think there was anything that would prevent us from doing a separation. He said, theyre joined at the liver. The liver regenerates. We can separate the liver and give them each a portion and it will regenerate. It doesnt look like theyre sharing anything, other major organs. He was telling us there may be down the line, bladder issues, one would have to have an artificial bladder. Thats cool. No problem. Reporter that was baby emily. After the girls were born, the doctors realized emily was also missing a bile duct. To give both babies a fighting chance the medical team decided to wait for ten months for their organs to develop more before sep gre separating the twins. They were so cute. Fast forward 18 years. These girls are all grown up. Emily has an artificial bladder and bile duct but otherwise she and caitlin are your typical teenagers. That looks look you. That looks like me. No health issues, thats what people want to know, any health concerns, issues since being separated. They had concerns that emily would continue to sitill be sic after the separation. We are completely fine. Perfectly healthy. And very blessed. Reporter and cov covaledictorians of their high school class. But this fall they will be taking on a new kind of separation, college, in different cities. About to head off to college, eh . It will be the first time, we will be separated more permanently. Yeah, kind of freaking out a little bit. Reporter how do you feel about that, emily . Going being away from your sister for the first time. It is scary. Some times if i start overthinking it i get really, really sad. Wait. Reporter identical twins with a strong connection. But just how different are they . Tell me a little bit about each of you . Emily is more girlie than i am. Definitely very into design and planning things out. And she likes to coordinate things. Reporter would how would you describe your sister . At first, sweet, quiet. Then off on the softball field. Get her done. Lets do it reporter a yinyang. Extrovert and quieter. Fair to say . Thats huh people would describe us. Outside we are look the that. When we are together. We both get real loud. Reporter and sistery. Hi. Say hello. Reporter the girls dont remember being physically conjoined. The only clue is the scars on their chest. But they want to share their story to help others. It is quite a story that you have to tell. And if somebody is going through that right now, what do you say to them, caitlin . It is something very special and unique. Ive dont think people should look at it in a bad way. A want people when they google conjoined twins, i want this to pop up and someone to see, it is hard at first, nothing good about it at first. And 18 years later there is nothing about it that affects us right now. Our thanks to Robin Roberts. Up next, the reallife inspiration behind the hit of the summer that has fans flocking to the box office and reaching for their tissue boxes the fault in our stars. Turn around every now and then i get a little bit hungry and theres nothing really good around turn around every now and then i get a little bit tired of living off the taste of the air turn around, barry finally, i have a manly chocolatey snack and fiber so my wife wont give me any more flack i finally found the right snack a broader mix of energies, world needs i finally found the right snack to move, to keep warm, to make clay piggies. Thats why we are supplying natural gas, to generate cleaner electricity, that has around 50 fewer co2 emissions than coal. Lets broaden the Worlds Energy mix, lets go. The fault in our stars just might be the unlikeliest recipe for a teen sensation ever. Yet the tearjerker has fans going wild. Tonight we are learning the inspiring real life story that struck a chord with shaleen woodley. Whats your name . Hazel. Why are you look at me like that. No surprise the it girl of the moment stars in the it movie of the summer. Shaleen woodley the fault in our stars. What a ride it has been for her . The descentants. You are so busy. Divergent. This isnt real. Now she is hazel, a girl with cancer, and the story of her life and loves and laughs. Which became the it movie how exactly . Because look at some of the scenes. There are no car chases. Nobody has superpowers. There is a lot of deep talking. Day donthey dont hurt you. A metaphor. You put the thing that does it right in your teeth. But you never give it the purr to kill you. Basically a movie that starts with a support group. Share some of your fears with the group. Definitely not the summer blockbuster formula. Even woodley did not see this coming. But she knew what was at the heart of the film, a story. That comes from a book. There is sort of a sell braegs celebration of life in this. There is hope in the pages. We dont see. If we are able to deliver this on a plat foreign ministform th millions. Not that it will change things. It will reinforce the paradigm of existing in the moment, rather than fear of the future or past. The book has the same title by john green. Just before the book starts, there is this quiet mention of some one named esther earl, a 16yearold fan that john green met at a Harry Potter Convention who helped him figure out that he needed to write the story he did. A lot of the reason i was eventually able to write the book because of my friendship with the young woman, named esther earl, to who the book is dedicated. Our friendship and the joy she had in our life were huge inspirations for the book. Esther knew how to live with possibly dying. Her youtube videos were a small sensation. And then, esther did die. Not always. Not always awesome. Not always strong. Not always brave. And you guys should know that. That is truth. And, that is some of what seems surprisingly to work about the movie. It is not about surprise rescue. Thats what woodley liked about it. All about the small moments. Not necessarily how many big things you do or who is going to remember you . Hazel doesnt need to be validated by any one other than herself. A story well told, obviously because it may be giving the term summer blockbuster a whole new meaning. For nightline, im john donvan, in washington. Indeed. Our thanks to john donvan. And finally from us tonight, a political upset of Epic Proportions in the virginia elections. After spending a cool 5 million for his reelection bid, congressman eric cantor lost the republican primary to a political unknown from the tea party. Becoming the first sitting House Majority leader in history to lose a primary fight. Tonights dark horse winner, dave brat is a college professor, who spent only around 100,000 by comparison. The enormous loss is a stunning surprise for cantor seen by some as the possible heir to speaker john boehner. Gma will have all the details on the shocking upset. Thank you for watching abc news.
