Feel i love it for f i love it i love it for f i love it i love the way i love the way tonight rio, city of sun and sex is under siege. This is a crackdown. We are going deep inside a world ruled by drugs, cash, and crime. In this war it is hard to tell the bad guys from the cops. It is the rio you dont know and cant imagine. This special edition of good evening. I have had plenty of interesting and dicey experiences as a reporter, but until now i never actually had some body threaten my life on camera. That may be because i had never traveled before into the criminal underworld of rio. Most people think of rio as a place for sun and sand. But as the the city prepares to host the world cup next year and then the summer olympics in 2016, the police have launched an allout war to uproot violence and powerful drug gangs. Tonight we are going to take you inside this war for paradise. Right now on the outskirts of rio, about to enter a massive slum entirely run by a drug gang. You got the camera . Turn the camera on. What follows is a delicate negotiation with armed men. We are led down dark alley ways and then we see it. An open air market with piles of color coded drugs. It blows the mind to be in this place where everybody is selling drugs. No police. Th business as usual. Welcome to rio where just minutes from iconic beaches with names like copacabana and there shantytowns built into the hillside. The communities are home to millions of people. And most of these places arent ruled by the government, but instead by violent drug gangs. Now, with rio set to host the summer olympics in 2016, and next year, the world cup, police are mounting a military Style Campaign to take over the flavelas, it is a war, a war for paradise. And we are going to the front line. Our goal, to penetrate rios criminal underworld. Ask this young man what happened when the cops arrive. He said the bullets fly. And find out what the cops are really up against here in one of the most dangerous cities on earth where we will see things few outsiders ever see. They shot a woman who had a baby in her arms. And ultimately come face to face with a heavily armed piely in t tim highly intimidating crime boss. Our journey into gang territory begins in this church where these believers are preparing for some of the most extreme missionary work you will ever see. They are ev [ indiscernible ] this is a crackdown. I am going to go in. You can smell the crack. This is what happens when a drug gang is effectively the local government. They call this a crack land. One of many in the city in the middle of a raging crack epidemic. It just keeps going and going. This is just basically a park dedicated to crack cocaine. These small water containers are the pipe of choice for rios crack addict. It is amazing there is just no no fear of the police just smoking right out in public. The only way we have been able to gain access to this place, and no go zone for outsiders including the cops is because we are with the members of this church who are respected by the gang that runs this flavela, the dealers may be ruthless but they apparently fear god. As we travel across rio to another crack land, this one the length of a city block we, get a sense of the power and also the destructive greed of the drug gangs. They are willing to sell to children. This is a 16yearold crack addict. And as it turns out there are even younger children here. He is 14. He has been smoking crack since he was 10. Where is your mom . She doesnt try to stop you . No. I think this is not a good place for a 14yearold. No, he is just trying to get me to give you money to smoke it more. I cant give you money, sorry. But there is a source to all of this misery. So the next night we go much deep near gang territory to find it. Our guide is this man right here. Driving the car. We will not show you his face. He used to be a member of a drug gang. I believe he can help us talk to some of the gang members. The rules are we need to turn all the light on in the car so, they can see it in the car and roll down the windows. We are now inside the flavela. Got the camera. We have got to turn the camera on. We essentially place ourselves at the mercy of armed dealers who invite us into one of the wildest scenes i have ever witnessed. You see people are buying the drugs right next to me. Theyre showing faces. So we are not showing any faces. So this is a the dealers who are so concerned about protecting their identities are shockingly young. Many just teenage boys. He says this is his bestseller. This is five american dollars of cocaine. The bestseller. Reporter they follow a strict system with the drugs color coded and sorted by weight. This is 1. 50 worth of cocaine. 15 worth of cocaine. Like a Bargain Basement where you hunt for the biggest dose for your money. Theyre set up near a low cull tra near a local train station that delivers a flow of customers all night. Get a since of being here 30 second. This is an extremely, extremely lucrative operation. But we want to know are the profits really worth the devastation that drugs are creating in the dealers own neighborhoods. There are so many people addicted to crack. Are you worried about selling this drug to your own community . His fellow dealers insist they have no choice. You have lost friend to this drug. You still dont worry about selling it. And so striking sit hearing with the guys. These are just kids who are not thinking through through the consequences of their actions. And yet they are in charge here. And they have a lot of money. Of course these young men have bosses, drug kingpins who hold the real power in the flavelsas. We want to talk to one of them. Our guide, former dealer says that could be risky, but he will try. And that is how two days later we fiend ourselves in a tiny room, down a back alley with members of rios most powerful gang, the red command. We are getting a rare glimpse at drugs being prepared. And thats when the man in charge here, shows up. He is draped in gold, and carrying a semiautomatic weapon. He agrees to go on camera as long as we dont show his face. He has several armed men in the room, looming over our shoulders, making sure we keep our promise. Finally our chance to ask tough questions of one of rios real criminal power brokers. He has a question completely by surprise. After days of trying to get here. Now, were not sure if well get out. Also coming up, the other side in this war for paradise. The cops. Are these really the good guys . They shot a woman who had a baby in her arms. She said that by taking both, some people had symptom improvement as early as 1 to 2 weeks. I wish id talked to my doctor sooner. [ female announcer ] abilify is not for everyone. Call your doctor if your depression worsens or you have unusual changes in behavior, or thoughts of suicide. Antidepressants can increase these in children, teens and young adults. Elderly dementia patients taking abilify have an increased risk of death or stroke. Call your doctor if you have high fever, stiff muscles and confusion to address a possible lifethreatening condition. Or if you have uncontrollable muscle movements, as these could become permanent. High blood sugar has been reported with abilify and medicines like it and in extreme cases can lead to coma or death. Other risks include increased cholesterol, weight gain, decreases in white blood cells, which can be serious, dizziness on standing, seizures, trouble swallowing, and impaired judgment or motor skills. [ sally ] since adding abilify, i feel better. Abilify and my antidepressant make a pretty good team. [ female announcer ] ask your doctor about a free trial of abilify and go to addabilify. Com. Millions of people in one of the worlds beautiful iconic cities living under the control of violent drug gangs. We continue now with our journey on to the front lines of a raging war on the streets of rio. After four days of trying to penetrate the drug gangs of rio, who are engaged in a vicious war with the police, after seeing drugs sold openly on the street, and children doing crack. Finally in a small room a bristle with heavily armed men we come face to face with one of the men responsible for this situation. A drug lord in the infamous red command gang. The police have been going into neighborhood and pacifying them. If they came here, tried to do that, what would happen . The police say the drug gangs need to be taken down. But this man who effectively governs this flavela and has asked us to hide his face says it is the police who are the problem. Do you have trouble with the police often . Would you describe your work as dangerous though . Reporter i take a moment to absorb this comment and then the drug lord starts chuckling. Then he launches into a speech about how he respects all people. But if thats true, why is he selling crack to his own neighbors . Do you know how serious the crack epidemic is, do you worry at all about selling that to your neighbors . Reporter in the morning we see firsthand how dangerous the drug gangs really are. A wife sobs as her husband, a 35yearold Police Sergeant and father of two, is lowered into the ground. The sergeant was killed in an operation inside a flavela against the red command. He was part of an elite tactical unit, the tip of the spear in the battle to wrest control of the flavelas away from the drug gang. Here is the twist in this story. While, of course, nearly everybody here wants the drug dealers uprooted, there are widespread concerns about how this war is being carried out. The police call it pacification, but it is anything but peaceful. It is essentially a counter insurgen insurgence y campaign, it is booing mou being mounted by a police force known for corruption on average, Police Kill Two people a day. We want to know how officials can justify the tough tactics. So i go directly to the architect of pacification, rios secretary of security, jose beltrame. You see a video like this, it its pretty horrifying. I show him video i found of a Police Helicopter unleashing a rain of bullets into a neighborhood while in pursuit of a drug lord. As the man in charge of the police, can you say with any confidence that this kind of indiscriminately violence perpetrated by your men is not happening still . No. [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter but on our final day in rio, it becomes vividly clear, who the victims of this war really are. Many of the regular people who live here fear both the gangs and the cops. This young woman says her mother and grandmother were shot dead just one day earlier by police on a raid. This is cell phone video of the aftermath. It is horrifying. You can see the bodies on the ground in pools of blood with officers standing by seemingly unpertu unperturbed. They shot a woman who had a baby in her arms. Yes, they say. And it got worse from there they claim. The cops said dont help the victims. Here in rio the police and gangs claim to be on the side of the people. But it is clear that for the most part, the people are simply marooned in the cross fire. And the young woman who lost her mother and grandmother, lead a rally along with her friend and neighbors. Even the organizers of this event, longtime local peace activist, concedes the futility. You think that police will investigate this seriously . I dont have any hope. Reporter you have no hope. No. Reporter just two more victims, sadly, perhaps, soon to be forgotten. As we wrap up our last day on the front lines of this war for paradise, it hits me that the one point of agreement among everyone we spoke to, its that even with the clock ticking down to the world cup and the olympics, this war is not likely to end any time soon. And that is our report from rio. An extra ordinary journey. Well be right back with tonights feed frenzy. Well, put on a breathe right strip and shut your mouth.
