And lets get straight to the developing and very dangerous story out of north korea. And we want you to take a look at dueling images this morning. This is a military parade mounted by north korea just hours ago and prominently on display with the north korean government claims are new missiles. Meanwhile, this morning, the u. S. And south korean tanks are moving into position for a joint military exercise near the border with north korea. And, of course, this is all playing out against a backdrop of tit for tat threats between President Donald Trump and the reclusive north korean regime, the North Koreans saying theyre ready for war if trump wants it. Meantime, the world is watching whether the North Koreans will conduct another nuclear test. Weve got Team Coverage this morning and were going to start with abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz who is in seoul, south korea. Reporter this morning a military parade in the north korean capital, pyongyang, to mark the 105th birthday of kim ilsung, the countrys late founder and grandfather of kim jongun, the current leader. Tens of thousands North Koreans gathered to celebrate the holiday known as the day of the sun. The highly choreographed parade complete with flybys, tanks, marching soldiers and what may be Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles capable of reaching the united states. Also on display among the plethora of war machines for the first time submarinelaunched missiles. They are the newest weapons in the unpredictable kim jonguns arsenal. Analysts were anticipating a possible test of its Nuclear Weapons or another escalation of the standoff between kims regime and the white house. On friday as the Chinese Foreign ministry warned no one will win if the two sides go to war, a top north korean official told the Associated Press the Trump Administration is more vicious and more aggressive than its predecessor. [ speaking a Foreign Language ] trump is always using aggressive words he said, singling out the president s tweets. It is the u. S. That is threatening us. Talking to reporters, President Trump offered this summary of his stance toward the hermit kingdom. North korea is a problem. The problem will be taken care of. Reporter the u. S. Now sending the Aircraft Carrier the uss vinson into the region, american troops conducting military exercises along the border. North korea now reportedly calling the administrations words and actions maniacal military provocations, and this threat, we will go to war if they choose, adding, they can destroy major American Military bases in south korea within minutes. But, dan and paula, here at the Osan Air Base in south korea, they say that is all talk. North korea may try to attack this base, but theyre well prepared to stop them. Dan and paula. Lets hope its all talk, Martha Raddatz reporting from south korea. And lets bring in now retired marine coprs colonel and abc news contributor Steve Ganyard who served in the pentagon and also as a fighter pilot. Steve is in washington. Steve, good morning. Lets talk about the new missiles that north korea unveiled, what appears to be an icbm, an intercontinental ballistic missile, and also some submarine missiles. Do we think these are actually operational . Some of them are and some of them arent, dan. I think the submarine missile, we saw a test earlier in the year, quite concerning because the submarine can hide, and you can put it off the coast of either korea or japan. The larger missiles are the ones that are most concerning, and these are the Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles that could conceivably reach the u. S. The first time weve seen them, the number of missiles and the capability on display here is quite disturbing. And in terms of retaliatory military action, steve, the u. S. Now has what could be a game changer. What can you tell us about that . Paula, theres a new missile or a new capability that the u. S. Has thats based around highpowered microwaves. Its a burst of electromagnetic energy, the same thing you would find in a nuclear weapon. But theyve been able to put this in a stealthy cruise missile. Its not talked about much because its brandnew, but it is a tool that the president would have. The idea being this electromagnetic pulse would fly over an area such as where the North Koreans would be conducting a nuclear test and it would send this Microwave Energy into the ground, it would be absorbed by anything that was electrical and it would go into the ground and fry everything underneath. Nobody gets hurt. Just everything stops working that uses electricity, so well watch for that because thats something new that President Trump would have in his quiver. Steven, given theyve done Nuclear Tests twice last year, i believe, what is new here, and are the increased tensions were seeing right now due to north korea or due to trumps tough talk . Theres not much new here because kim jongun continues to ramp up the pressure, continues to move towards not only a Nuclear Capability but the means to deliver. Thats what were seeing here. Hes getting missiles that can travel farther distances and one of the missiles we saw today could actually potentially reach the united states. Thats whats most disturbing, so weve had democratic president s and republican president s that have kicked this problem down the road for 20 years, but were getting to that point where the north could now threaten directly the u. S. Homeland, which is why it seems President Trump is taking this problem head on. Unsettling to say the least. Steve, thank you very much. And speaking of President Trump, he is monitoring the north korea situation from maralago in palm beach, florida, where hes spending the easter holiday. Our david wright is there with more on how the president is handling this ongoing situation, especially, david, most of his senior staff remains in d. C. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, paula. The white house says the president s getting regular updates on the situation in north korea, but as you say, hes here with pretty much a bare bones staff. Were told that two members of his National Security team are here, one of them an expert in the korean peninsula. But virtually all of his senior Staff Members are elsewhere. Steve bannon, reince priebus, sean spicer all back in washington for the easter holiday, and soninlaw Jared Kushner is off skiing with his family. Of course, Vice President mike pence is headed to south korea to monitor the situation there. But you know there have been concerns raised in the past about maralago, whether a beach club is a secure enough place to monitor a situation as serious as this. You remember that photo from a few months ago when the president and the Prime Minister of japan were there out in the dining room looking at cell phones as korea as north korea launched a previous missile test. Well, there have been some changes made since then. Last weekend when the president launched missiles against syria, you saw him with his advisers in a makeshift war room called a scif, a secure compartmented information facility. Its now a regular feature there. Bottom line, the white house says the president is prepared, is following the situation as he would back in the white house and can respond as needed. Dan and paula. David, thank you. Lets go to abc news political commentator Cokie Roberts who is joining us from south carolina. Cokie, good morning. You have watched many president s deal before in Foreign Policy crises. What is your read on how trump is handling this one with north korea . Well, as Steve Ganyard said, watched many president s deal with north korea. Its just a perpetual problem, and, of course, President Trump came in with lots of bellicose language and many tweets about how he was not going to let north korea do anything bad. And it was not terribly heartening when we when he told the wall street journal that after ten minutes with the chinese leader, he had come to understand that north korea was complicated. But at least he has come to understand that, and i think that he will probably be somewhat cautious here and, of course, the japanese and South Koreans are very much involved in this. But to be fair, four administrations have not succeeded in getting the North Koreans to not nuclearize their arsenal and its getting more and more dangerous. Cokie, what do you make of trumps military approach, basically emboldening his generals to make decisions without even consulting him first . Reporter well, i think that a lot of that has been true for a long time, paula, but, again, this is part of President Trump trying to portray a very tough image and say, you know, my generals, as he calls them, are going to be in charge and not have to worry about some lilylivered politician, but i think that the military is well aware of the constraints upon them even if the president not necessarily is. How do we square, cokie, how do we square these recent state of military actions or threats of military action like the large bomb we saw dropped in afghanistan, the strike against syria and, of course, now the tough talk with north korea, how do we square that with President Trumps avowed America First Campaign Promises . Well, you basically cant square it, dan, but he would say, you know, that i think President Trump would say this is america strong and that this is showing the world that you cant push us around, and i certainly think you can make the case that saying that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable and against our National Interests, that getting rid of terrorists in afghanistan is pro our National Interests and that being very alert when it comes to north korea and making sure that they dont do anything precipitous is also in our national interest, but its very different from the rhetoric we heard all through the campaign which was basically were going to concentrate all of our energies here at home. Jobs, jobs, jobs and forget about those foreign places. You know, president s discover that the world actually does need them, and they have to pay attention, thank heaven. This comes after the company that makes the drug that was to be used said it wasnt meant to be used for Capital Punishment purposes saying they believed or thought that the prison would use them only for medical purposes. In boston former nfl star Aaron Hernandez found not guilty of double murder. A jury acquitting hernandez friday of charges that he killed two people in a driveby shooting in 2012. The defense had claimed that the prosecutions star witness was the actual killer. Hernandez is already serving a life sentence on a previous murder conviction while he was playing for the new england patriots. And a tenday nationwide manhunt for a wisconsin fugitive said to be armed and dangerous, that is finally over. Joseph jakubowski behind bars this morning after Police Responded to a report of a man camping out in someones property in rural wisconsin. Jakubowski had been on the run since april 4th after he allegedly stole 18 weapons from a gun shop and threatened to carry out attacks at churches. And the white house says that the logs of those who come to visit will no longer be made public. The Trump Administration ending an obama era practice of making most of those records public through the white house website. Now those visitor logs will be kept secret and may not be available for years. The white house citing National Security concerns for the change. The decision already being challenged by government watchdog groups. And report of sharks attack in two different parts of the u. S. In florida. A teenager in jacksonville was bit on the ankle and foot while he was surfing on friday. Luckily just doing some minor damage and nobody got hurt. The Severe Weather threat moves farther east. It has been over a month since tad cummins and 15yearold Elizabeth Thomas went missing. Now cummins wife and two daughters, theyre speaking exclusively to abc news with a message of forgiveness. Investigators say they have no idea where they may be and this morning, tad cummins family just wants to make sure he knows they forgive him and want him to come back. This morning, the family of the tennessee teacher accused of kidnapping his student is begging him to come home. Its been very strange to be suddenly thrown into the spotlight for something that you didnt never want to be known for. Reporter but now jill cummins husband for more than 30 years is on the run accused of having an inappropriate relationship with 15yearold Elizabeth Thomas last spotted by this walmart surveillance camera in Oklahoma City on march 15th. Two days after they disappeared from columbia, tennessee, almost 700 miles away. The hardest part i think is not understanding how he betrayed me so. Reporter her husband and the teen disappearing after another student reported seeing tad cummins kissing Elizabeth Thomas in his classroom. Something both denied. How did he explain it to you . That he was it was either someone telling a lie or thought they saw something that they didnt and that it absolutely did not happen and i totally believed him. Reporter investigators say tad cummins planned his escape searching age of consent and how to marry a teen. Tad cummins didnt just leave behind his wife, he also left his two daughters. Were you surprised by all this . Blown away. I mean not something the most unexpected thing ever. By the most unexpected person ever. Yeah. Reporter his daughters say despite everything, they forgive their father and miss him. I hope that he realizes that were still here and that it makes him realize that if he comes home, that hes not coming home to nothing.
