Parking garages swamped. Is the worst over . And whats in store for the week ahead . And, pokemon stop. The wildly addictive mobile game coming to a crashing halt. Millions of people suffering from sudden withdrawal. I was nerd raging about it. Was it simply system overload or a sinister cyberattack . Hey, good morning. As we come on the air, there are fastmoving developments right now in turkey. A key u. S. Ally that is supposed to be a beacon of stability in a chaotic region now dealing with the aftershocks of an attempted military coup. Thousands of supporters of the countrys president are marching through the streets as the government rounds up members of the military and judiciary who have been accused of plotting this coup. Well have a live report from the ground coming up but we start here with america on the cusp of history. We have a shot from inside the Convention Hall in cleveland where what promises to be a truly extraordinary Republican National convention will kick off tomorrow. Things are about to get interesting inside that Convention Hall. Donald trump will accept the nomination for president on thursday. The fourday event promises to be a family affair. There will be no fewer than six prime time speakers with the last name trump. On saturday trump made his first appearance with his Vice President ial pick, indiana governor mike pence. Can these two men with extremely different backgrounds unite whats been a divided party . Well get an answer from chief abc news anchor George Stephanopoulos coming up but we start with abcs chief White House Correspondent jon karl who is right there. Jon, good morning to you. Reporter we are one day away from a convention that donald trump promised would be filled with showbiz. And now the final major piece is in place as trump has a running mate. Its official, the gop lineup is trump pence. Mike pence is my first choice. Ive admired the work hes done especially in the state of indiana. Reporter in many ways mike pence looks like a conventional choice for vp. A midwest governor who spent a dozen years in congress and is well liked by conservative republicans. Were going to have an incredible convention. Reporter it took trump 28 minutes to officially introduce his running mate. At times it seemed he needed to remind himself why he was there. So mike pence, back to mike pence, he looks very good. Reporter above all one of the reasons is party unity. Lets come together as a party and a people and a movement to make America Great again. Reporter but they are a political odd couple. For one thing, pence long ago promised no personal attacks. Trump was asked about that in a joint interview on 60 minutes. Hillary clinton you Better Believe it. Hillary clinton is a crook. Thats negative. I call her crooked hillary. Shes crooked hillary. He wont i didnt ask him to do it. Reporter as for the convention, this much is clear, its going to be a family affair. Trumps wife melania and all of his Adult Children will take the stage in cleveland. All told, a half dozen trumps with major speaking roles. And here at the convention well also be seeing some of those republicans who trump defeated along the way. Scott walker is speaking. Ben carson and even ted cruz who trump battled with most viciously. Among those not appearing are some of the biggest republican names from past conventions, no member of the bush family. Not mitt romney. Not john mccain. Not even sarah palin. Dan . Jon karl, thank you. I spoke about this with George Stephanopoulos moments ago, who is inside the Convention Hall. George, good morning to you, my friend. Lets talk about trumps Vice President ial pick, mike pence. As jon karl pointed out, it took trump 28 minutes to even bring pence on stage on saturday. Does that tell us anything about trump maybe not viewing this as a prominent role in his campaign . Well, i think it tells Us Donald Trump always does things the way donald trump wants to do them. And that was a vintage donald trump performance yesterday making the case against hillary clinton, talking about his hotels even, also making the case, though, for mike pence and i think he did as he was speaking yesterday really signal why he did it. He wanted party unity and thats what mike pence buys him at this convention this week in cleveland. Hes a favorite of the cultural conservatives, hes a favorite of the establishment as well as has the support of people like speaker of the house, paul ryan, the republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell. Even though the democrats are already attacking mike pence as an extreme choice, it does get donald trump what he needs this week. So trump can go into the convention confident no one will steal it from him in some sort of floor fight. It sure feels like that. You have some of the never trump people still making noise about how theyll try to disrupt the convention, try to get to free up the delegates on the floor, they were crushed pretty well in the committees this week but theres even some talk now of trying to find a way to delay the roll call vote. Well see how much power they have. The republican chairman, well talk to him, reince priebus, chairman of the Republican Party and his team think they have it under control but these dissenting delegates are still agitating. With many people apparently boycotting this convention, former president s, sitting senators, were going to hear a lot from trumps family members including his children and his wife. How powerful an asset is his family for him . Well, they have been this whole campaign. Theyve been in some ways his chief surrogates and his top advisers. We saw the involvement of his daughters and his daughter and sons and soninlaw in the Vice President ial pick. They all flew out to indiana to meet with mike pence and others. So, hes counting on that this weekend. We are going to learn a lot more about that family. I think one of the things hes hoping is that people will see how loyal his kids are, how well spoken they are and hope that that reflects well on him. George, thank you. Thanks, dan. And a reminder abc news will cover this convention all week long. George will be hosting this week live from cleveland with the results of a brandnew poll showing how close this race is right now and abc will have complete coverage all week long on world news, nightline and of course, gma. Well kick things off tomorrow. George and robin live in cleveland all week long. Paula, over to you. Dan, thanks. Our other big story here at home, drenching storms in the southeast overnight. The city of raleigh, north carolina, has been hit particularly hard by flash flooding and rob is on the story for us this morning. Hi, rob. Hi, paula. A lot of heat and humidity for midjuly across the southeast building up and weve seen thunderstorms that have popped, as well. Right across the Raleigh Durham area, 3 to 6 inches of rain overnight and the main creek rising 15 feet in less than an hour. And this is the result. Check out some of these dramatic pictures here, flooding in the main streets in through the city and seeing rainfall amounts that really unable to be handled there across the storm drains and across raleigh and in through the rest of north carolina. Well see more in the way of thunderstorms pop up there today as well but the main threat this morning is this line of thunderstorms thats rolling through iowa, we have flash flood watches posted and this will be driving to the east as we go through the afternoon so thats your Severe Weather threat today through milwaukee and through des moines and chicago. Could see large hail, damaging winds and maybe an isolated tornado or two. More on this in just a bit. Dan, back to you. Rob, we know youll be watching it. Thank you. Now to the situation in turkey. A key american ally in the fight against isis reeling right now from a failed military coup, hundreds killed and the countrys president now vowing that the people responsible will pay a heavy price. Complicating matters for the u. S. , the turkish president says the main instigator of the plot is an elderly man who lives in the poconos. Abcs Alex Marquardt is in turkey with more. Alex, good morning. Reporter good morning, dan. The tanks those soldiers used to briefly shut down this bridge are still out here. There is a purge now under way in turkey. President erdogan eager to root out anybody connected to this attempted coup. And that cleric that he says is behind it is actually thousands of miles away in pennsylvania. Erdogan now demanding that president obama hand him over. Turkeys president has warned the plotters of the failed coup will pay a heavy price. This morning almost 6,000 soldiers, judges and socalled coup supporters have been detained, but erdogan says this is the man who is behind the attempted coup, turkish cleric fethullah gulen, who lives in rural pennsylvania. In front of throngs of supporters erdogan demanded that the u. S. Extradite the cleric. The crowds chanting for his death. Gulen, now a u. S. Resident, responded from his secluded compound, denying he had anything to do with the uprising and claimed it may have been staged by the government. The u. S. Says it supports turkeys government but this call for extradition now puts the u. S. In a tough spot with a crucial ally. We invite the government of turkey as we always do to present us with any legitimate evidence that withstands scrutiny. Reporter also a major american concern, the incirlik air base, which the u. S. Uses to launch air strikes on isis in neighboring syria. This morning it is shut down, the power cut off and its air space closed. Turkish Authorities Saying the coup plotters used the base to refuel the f16s that buzzed low on friday night along with helicopters as uniformed troops shut down two of istanbuls main bridges and the airport. People were so nervous, no one really wanted to act out on either side. Everyone was holding it in, waiting to see what was going to happen. Reporter erdogan supporters responded to his call to flood the streets, confronting the renegade soldiers who quickly understood their insurgency was losing momentum. And as day broke, with hands up they surrendered to the police and angry mobs. Their shortlived attempt to seize power over. Under president erdogan there have already been significant crackdowns on civil liberties, on the press and on the opposition. The fear now is that he will use this failed coup to consolidate power and become even more authoritarian than he already is. Paula . Still quite a scene. Alex, thank you. We want to bring in abc contributor, steve ganyard. Steve is a former Deputy Assistant secretary of state. We know you have extensive experience. Good morning to you. Good morning, paula. First and foremost, the u. S. Military base in turkey, is it still on lockdown without power . We know this base has been crucial in the fight against isis. So how concerning is this . Incirlik is useful. Because its much closer to syria so u. S. Warplanes going in to attack isis targets have a much shorter transit time. With it being shut down theyll have to fly sorties all the way up from the persian gulf so the transit times will be longer and means fewer sorties but it will be interesting to watch how erdogan uses incirlik as a tool in the relationship with the u. S. Going forward. When will the power come back on . When will the u. S. Be allowed to continue these sorties . Turkey is right on the border of iraq and syria. Okay, so you just mentioned the president of turkey. He continues with his claims that a cleric, fethullah gulen, who is living in pennsylvania, is behind this uprising. Demanding president obama extradite him to turkey. Really how does this affect our diplomatic relations with turkey, a key ally . Im not sure that mr. Gulen believes that this was a staged coup any more than mr. Erdogan believes that mr. Gulen had a direct role so this is all political posturing. Mr. Gulen is a useful tool for erdogan to blame the coup for but it allows erdogan to continue to consolidate power. You know, weve seen thousands of judges and people rounded up just today, so the country continues to slide toward authoritarianism as mr. Erdogan continues to consolidate power. And still no clarity on exactly who was behind this coup. Steve, we want to thank you for joining us this morning. Thanks, paula. Dan . As this crisis unfolds, scores of americans have been trapped. Stuck in a volatile country with flights to the u. S. Grounded. Abcs Gloria Riviera is covering that angle. Gloria, good morning. Reporter good morning, dan. Americans are being advised not to travel to turkey but for the many u. S. Citizens already on the ground in the country working, living, tourists, president obama made a direct appeal to turkeys government to avoid further escalation that could put american lives at risk. This morning, the u. S. State department issuing an unsettling warning to those americans on the ground in turkey, urging them to seek shelter and avoid unnecessary travel. And with flights out of turkey barred from landing in the u. S. , Many Americans at istanbul and ankaras airports left wondering what to do and where to go. There were a number of times that crowds started running one direction screaming, so we ducked into the dutyfree shops along the main part of the terminal. Every airline i thought i could get on on the computer said it was available but when you actually bought the ticket, the gates here said it was canceled or delayed. Reporter american professor david sayier says stores were shut down. Atms were mobbed and at Bosphorus University he watched as students rushed vending machines for food. Nobody could tell how long they would have to remain at home so they wanted to make sure there would be enough to eat. Reporter l. A. Native and singer shon abrams was in the middle of a concert when he found himself caught in the middle of it all. The streets were rather quiet. If youve been to istanbul before, you know theres a lot of action going on. A lot of people walking by here, gunshots and planes. Reporter all that unrest and uncertainty making it very difficult to make a plan to leave. The state Department Travel warning advising those who cannot get out of turkey right now to avoid large crowds and exercise heightened vigilance. Paula . Important advice, thanks, gloria. And from the uprising in turkey to that deadly truck massacre in nice, france. There have been more people detained and this morning were learning more about the man who killed 84 people by driving his truck through a crowded promenade and his family speaking out about his Mental Health and abcs linzie janis is right there in france for us. Hi, linzie. Reporter hi, paula. Good morning. Investigators are combing through the attackers cell phone and laptop searching for potential accomplices, also this morning french tv reporting he came here to the promenade in that truck in the days before the attack casing his target. This morning, new video of the moment terror struck. That 18ton truck accelerates running over the crowd. A woman screaming. The rest of the footage too graphic for us to show. But this morning, isis now claiming the driver, Mohamed Lahouaiej bouhlel, was one of its soldiers but the group not saying it orchestrated the attack. French Officials Say if bouhlel was radicalized he was not on their terror watch list and it must have happened quickly. The attackers brother saying he wasnt religious. His father saying his son had psychological problems. Bouhlels estranged wife seen here being led away, released by authorities today while six others remain in custody for questioning. Their identities not released. Also this morning, a desperate search for two missing americans, university of californiaberkeley student Nicolas Leslie who had been studying abroad and American Writer and traveler, renee lo iacono. Im devastated. I feel like my world is crumbling down because i havent heard from her. Reporter 84 killed and more than 300 injured in the chaos. You saw people jumping over this wall onto the beach. Yes, actually im sure it was for them the only way to save their life. Reporter this morning the French HealthMinistry Says of the injured, 18 are in a lifethreatening situation including one child. As you can see, back here on the promenade, the crowds have returned. People telling us they will not allow fear to keep them from paying their respects to the victims. Paula and dan . Good to hear people are coming back. Linzie, thank you. Lets check the weather now once again and back over to rob. Hey, dan, middle of fire season out west. And we had a couple of fires in through northern california. This one in shasta county. Just outside of redding. Not close to the homes but no major evacuations there. There were evacuations in fresno but no issues. Thats been contained. Fire weather watches and warnings and critical fire danger through parts of the intermountain west. There will be some breaks for the northeast at times as we get a little bit of troughiness so pop up into the 90s for philly, maybe near 100 degrees on monday. But drop down to the 80s until we rebuild as we go in towards midjuly. Man, we are just cranking through this summer. Try to stay cool out there, guys. Next thing you know itll be january. Thanks for the reminder. And summer again. So, ron, what do you have . Youre beginning with a shooting in florida. Thats right, paula. Well begin with breaking news from florida this morning where overnight two people were shot and killed inside a hospital room in the town of titusville thats near cape canaveral. The victims were a patient and a hospital employee. Police say two security guards at Parrish Medical Center subdued that gunman and no one else was hurt. The motive for that shooting at this point unknown. 65 arrests during a protest demanding civilian oversight of police in baltimore, maryland. Police say the crowd was marching peacefully and when they locked arms and blocked traffic on interstate 83, protesters were then asked to move. Those who refused, they were taken into custody. And a former Atlanta Police officer has turned himself in on murder charges, to face murder charges. James burns is accused of fatally shooting an unarmed black motorist Devaris Rogers last month. He claimed rogers tried to run him over with his vehicle but Police InternalAffairs Investigation found that burns was in no danger when he shot rogers. Burns was fired days after that. And u. S. And canadian antidoping officials are reportedly calling for the entire Russian Olympic Team to be banned from competing in the rio olympics. The Associated Press says it has obtained a letter to the International Olympic committee to be sent after mondays expected release of a report that should say that the russian governments expected to say helped manipulate drug tests at the 2014 winter games in sochi. Antidoping organizations in at least ten nations including the u. S. And canada are said to be in favor of banning all of those russian athletes from rio. Meanwhile, ahead of the rio games, some are accusing the worlds top golfers of skipping the olympics because of money. Some of the worlds top pro golfers including jordan spieth, jason day, Dustin Johnson and rory mcilroy pulled out and cited concerns about the zika virus but the Rio Organizing Committee president said the real reason is lack of prize money for those golfers. Finally, an 8yearold boy in virginia is looking out for his mailman in this extreme heat. His name is Carmine Mcdaniel and he left a cooler filled with gatorade and water. We believe thats gatorade and water on the front porch for his mail carrier with a note attached. A Home Security camera shows the mailman gratefully accepting those cold drinks. Nice. Change the subject. Now we have an incredible moment in the sea off australia. A massive humpback whale tangled up in rope approaches a group of kayakers for help, swimming right up to them. One of the kayakers then jumped in to help, which must have been a kind of crazy feat. Imagine that. He helped him free a flipper before the whale swam off. The one catch here is that the gentleman saw that he had actually swallowed some of the rope so he wasnt able to help him completely but he did contact wildlife officials. A great story.
