The intense manhunt going on right now. Air scare, High Altitude emergency. The cabin losing pressure, passengers scrambling for their masks. Take the time on the runway. Vehicles are standing by. The pilots quick maneuver, the Emergency Landing and the questions this morning. And wipeout. The gnarly moment a surfer freefalls 40 feet to eat this enormous wave. Cowabunga, dude. How hes doing this morning. Hey, good morning. After all the campaigning, the debating, the attacks, the ads and the analysis, the actual voters are finally about to have their say. Finally is the key word. Weve got just two days to go before people all over iowa head out to the caucuses and overnight most of the candidates out on the stump including her Hillary Clinton and her most prominent alley would be her husband bill clinton. There they are. There are some dramatic story lines in these final hours. Can hillary eke out a victory against a surging Bernie Sanders . And on the republican side, can an embattled ted cruz who was also on the trail overnight pull out a win against donald trump and if cruz doesnt win, is he done . And then theres the question of marco rubio. Is he surging at exactly the right time . We have Team Coverage this morning and we start with abcs jon karl who is covering the republicans. Jon, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. It is the final weekend before these first in the nation Iowa Caucuses. And there is a frenzy of activity on the airwaves with all those political ads and on the ground, in fact, there are 42 Campaign Events in iowa here for the republican candidates alone. Its down to the wire time in iowa. Today im here three days away to ask you to caucus for me on monday night. If you see a candidate who washington embraces, run and hide. Reporter while his rivals crisscross the state of iowa, donald trump was in New Hampshire unleashing a new attack on canadian born ted cruz. Ted cruz may not be a u. S. Citizen, right . Ted cruz is an anchor baby in canada. Reporter cruzs camp fired back with a statement overnight. The only anchor here is the one being dragged behind the ss new york values causing Donald Trumps campaign to stall out. Those jabs were traded after the final debate before the Iowa Caucuses, which drew over 12 million viewers. Thats slightly more than the last Republican Debate and many more viewers than saw trumps veterans rally during the debate. Trump relished skipping this one and mocked cruz for his first debate at center stage. Im glad i wasnt there. Because i guess all of that, he got pummeled. Wow. Reporter the front page of the Des Moines Register which endorsed rubio declared it a rough night for cruz. The texas senator was unfazed. It is not surprising that i am not the mainstream medias favorite candidate. I am working to be the candidate of the American People. Reporter marco rubio was hoping for a lastminute surge in iowa signing this trump bashing holiday card from a supporter. So, marco, your calendar for february 1st and go rock your caucus. Remember friends dont vote. Friends dont let friends vote for trump. [ laughter ] reporter after his brief foray in New Hampshire, donald trump will be back here in iowa later today and be campaigning virtually nonstop between now and the Iowa Caucuses on monday night. Dan. A lot of busy days ahead of us, jon karl, thank you. And jon is not going anywhere between now and iowa. No. Hes going to get comfortable right there. And in the democratic race Hillary Clintons use of her email server is dogging her during these last days before the caucuses. The state department will not release 22 of them because they contain top secret information. Abcs cecilia vega is covering the former secretary of state in des moines. Good morning, cecilia. Reporter paula, good morning to you. This is exactly what Hillary Clinton does not want to be talking about two days before the caucuses here. These new headlines could not have come at a worse time for her. Overnight Hillary Clinton and her not so secret weapon campaigning together in iowa. I brought a pretty good warmup act, dont you think . Reporter bill Clinton Center stage. Shes never touched a thing she didnt make better. Reporter bill telling abc news exclusively the battle is not over yet. This is a dog fight. You fight till the last hour. Reporter a political power couple joining forces on everything from the gops vision. I just fundamentally disagree. Reporter to the economy. We are not going back to that kind of failed economy. Reporter Hillary Clinton also setting her sights on the one person in her line of fire, Bernie Sanders. Id rather underpromise and overdeliver. Reporter the one thing they didnt address, those emails. The state department declaring 22 emails from clintons private account top secret. Clintons Campaign Calling for the emails to be made public saying this appears to be overclassification run amuck. But sanders sticking to that now famous line. The American People are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails. Reporter releasing a statement saying voters deserve a discussion of the issues. He is still drawing a crowd, more than a thousand people coming out to see sanders overnight. I get a little bit tired when you have establishment folks saying, bernie, youre thinking too big, and i say, the hell with that. [ cheers and applause ] reporter Bernie Sanders packing in the big crowds out here and for the First Time SinceHillary Clinton launched her campaign she will be on the trail today with her entire family, bill and chelsea joining her, but, guy, this is what i want to show you. You want to know how busy they are. Three full pages. Thats the schedule for all of the Campaign Stops today. Guy, it is a mad dash to the finish line now. Dan. And thats how busy you will be. And i want to remind everybody we will see you tonight when you anchor world news tonight from iowa. Cecilia, thank you. Now, though, lets bring in abc news political analyst matt dowd. Matt, good morning to you. Good morning. Thanks for coming in. We appreciate it. So how much should Hillary Clinton be worried about this email imbroglio . The latest development . I think its going to continue to dog her the rest of the way, until, one, all the emails come vut. The state department hasnt released them all and the Justice Department and fbi finishes their investigation. I think this is going to it goes to a vulnerability she has which she continues to have which is on trust and its a reminder to voters of the 90s of the part they didnt like about the 90s. It will hurt her in the general election. The question thats primary is does it undermine her argument about electability with this hanging out there . Right, exactly, and electability is one of the issues hanging over bernie so this is particularly pertinent now. Let me ask you about the republican side. This is where things get truly interesting. What is your view of the state of play right now in the republican side . I think the odds are still that donald trump wins iowa and then in the aftermath of that probably wins New Hampshire. Thats the odds on today. I think the person to watch is marco rubio. Marco rubio had a really good debate, ted cruz had a really bad debate the other night and in the course of that, i think it gives marco rubio oxygen to rise. There is a possibility he could finish second in iowa. If he does that, this becomes a twoperson race between donald trump and marco rubio and its anybodys guess what happens after that. A gamechanging development potentially. Completely. Matthew dowd, appreciate it. Youll be with us straight through the finish as always. We appreciate it. I want to remind everybody abc news is the place to be for complete coverage of the caucuses in iowa. George and robin will be reporting live from gma in iowa monday and david muir anchoring live from iowa and george and the whole Team Standing by to bring you the latest news the instant it happens. And dont forget next saturday the Republican Debate live from New Hampshire at 8 00 eastern right here on abc. Because were going to be talking about New Hampshire and those caucuses right after that. All right. Thank you. We want to turn now to new concerns about the explosive zika virus. 36 cases have now been discovered here in 12 states. President obama has discussed the spread of the disease with the president of brazil who is vowing to win the war on the mosquitoes that carry this disease and abcs dr. Richard besser is right there at ground zero from the epidemic in brazil. Reporter good morning, paula. On monday the World Health Organization is convening an Emergency Response committee to figure out how to respond to the global epidemic of zika virus. But to understand what to do, you have to understand whats taking place right here where they think the whole thing started in brazil. Brazil, the epicenter for the zika virus epidemic, the country grappling with the devastating effects it has on babies of infected women. I traveled here to see how its being handled firsthand. Hello. We spent our friday at a hospital in recife where we meet dr. Camilla ventura. Shes seen 130 babies with microcephaly, an abnormal smallness of the head. This is scary. We are dealing with a disease we have no information about. Reporter this womans daughter was born with microcephaly. She told me through a translator she felt symptoms of zika but was told it was a different infection saying they will do all they can so their daughter can speak, walk and have as much of a normal life as possible. Brazil is working with the cdc to get a handle on the epidemic but its not the only place affected. This houston mother contracted the virus while on a trip to el salvador before the warnings. It was all over my body. I was scratching. Like my whole family saw my chest and they were like wow. Reporter and although the illness is usually mild, her symptoms were anything but. You have no strength, no energy, all you want to do is lay down and sleep. Reporter one of the keys to stopping zika virus is controlling the mosquito. So were going to be out with the military into slums like this to see what theyre doing to get rid of the places where the mosquitoes are breeding. Were covering up, long sleeves, using repellant. That way well be sure we dont come home with zika virus. Dan. A massive effort ahead. Rich, stay safe. Thank you. And we have another Disturbing Health headline this morning, one week before the super bowl, the nfl says concussions soared to a fouryear high this season, and helmettohelmet hits are way up too. Abcs ryan smith is on the story. Reporter a hard hit for the nfl just days away from the biggest game of the year, super bowl 50. The league releasing this report friday saying diagnosed concussions in the nfl increased 58 this regular season with a staggering 271 players sidelined since the preseason in 2015. Compare that to the 206 concussions reported in 2014. The study discussed on espns nfl insiders roundtable. All were really seeing is a real change in the game heading in the wrong direction. Reporter the most startling numbers, helmettohelmet collisions with 92 reported this year. In 2014, the nfl only reported 58. The nfl telling abc news the reasons for increases in concussions are unclear. But it will look at any significant trends over the next several weeks. The numbers echoing what some claim is a growing problem for the league and for football on all levels. Seven High School Players reportedly died as a direct result of footballrelated injuries. The nfl telling us, safety is a priority last december. But acknowledging concussions remain a risk. The priority of the league is to protect Player Health and safety. Do you think that we can ever eliminate concussions from the sport . Oh, i think that as much contact as there is in our game, theres always going to be injuries, and i think concussion is a very difficult problem to solve over time. Reporter for good morning america, ryan smith, abc news, new york. Our thanks to ryan. And, you know, such a staggering increase, but they think one of the reasons may simply be because the number of players screened for concussions this past season doubled, so that could be one of the explainers, as well. Thats a good bit of context. Thank you, paula. Lets get it over to dr. Ron claiborne for a look at the other stories this morning. Whats happening, sir . I dont know. Just kidding. Good morning to you, dan and paula. Sara haines, good morning. Good morning, everyone. We begin with a scare in the air for passengers aboard an air canada flight from newark to vancouver. A passenger took this snapshot inside the cabin just as oxygen masks were dropped. Bowie also asked his ashes be scattered in bali in accordance with a buddhist ritual. The 69 rock star died of cancer, of course, earlier this year. Now to sports and just a short while ago a huge upset at the womens final in the Australian Open down under. Top seeded Serena Williams losing to Angelique Kerber of germany in three sets. Williams is trying and now failing to match steffi grafs record of 22 grand slam wins. And i would like you to meet a guy named mike donnelly, virginias newest Lottery Winner thanks to a lucky mistake. Donnelly works at a supermarket and accident al ally printed out the wrong ticket for a customer who wanted to play powerball so he kept that drawing ticket for himself. He paid for it. You can guess what happened next. Donnellys ticket that he accidentally bought won and he collected 7 million in the cash payout. Lucky man. And finally, a surfer in hawaii takes the term hang ten to a whole new level. Check this out. Tom does land was out surfing in maui on wednesday. Look at that. A monster wave came up on him and he plunged nearly 40 feet into the ocean. Surf league says it was one of the wildest craziest wipeouts that theyve ever seen. Dosland only suffered a stiff neck and a broken board. The board is gone, thats okay and in true surfer style he was back out in the water the next day. Of course, he is. Tough guy. Surfers are so brave and courageous. Or crazy and courageous. I think its a combination of both of those two. Combination. This is why couch surfing is always preferable. Yeah, exactly. Are you a pro . Yes, semipro actually. Semipro. Whats going on in the weather . Speaking of crazy pictures, i have an unbelievable photo coming for you out of oregon this morning. Imagine the highway you typically use every day looking like this, not one, but two 50foot sinkholes. If you ever needed a reminder its el nino, you are looking at it. And the california west coast is still very active again today. Look at that. The earth is still falling. And now look at what were dealing with today. Even more advisories out there today. Were talking about snow, rain and a lot of wind thanks to another system thats going to be making its way through the area. All eyes are going to be on the system making its way through sunday. So, tomorrow, first bringing that heavy rain through Southern California but now were going to watch that system spread east. Right when it hits the rockies, notice what were talking about, potentially heavy amounts of snow in colorado. Look at the very tail end of this. We have the caucuses and well be talking about a potential for a blizzard monday night in through tuesday. Probably not good timing for a lot of people out there. As far as totals, heavy amounts of rain, potential for 3 inches of rain possible in through Southern California but also heavy amounts of snow. We mentioned the blizzard. If denver gets 8 inches of snow, its going to be the most snow theyve seen all year long and then maybe even a foot of snow out through iowa. Suddenly going to be a tough time for a lot of travelers trying to get home tuesday morn so for everyone saying theres no el nino, clearly a lot is going on. Paula. Thank you, indra. Two days to go. Also happening this morning, ethan couch, the socalled affluenza teen waking up in a juvenile Detention Center in texas while a judge mulls whether to transfer the case to adult court. And facebook has taken sides in the gun control debate banning anybody from advertising or selling guns on its site. Licensed firearms retailers can still promote their businesses on facebook but theyre not allowed to accept orders or to make any sales. A big victory for gun control advocates. Also ahead, some of the best winter athletes in the world pulling off these incredible moves at the x games. I can feel my heartbeat rising. That was sara, by the way. That would be amazing if it was. It could be sara if she werent eight months pregnant. Yeah, because i could totally do that without my baby. I believe you could. Youre a good iowa girl. The baby is really holding you back. I mean, its the only reason i cant do Amazing Things right now. Tony reali will be here with that story in just a couple of minutes. You can do plenty of Amazing Things. Let me start us off on a bit of a serious note this half hour, the daring jailbreak in california, one of the three inmates who got out is back behind bars this morning and were starting to learn more about a woman whos been arrested for allegedly helping these inmates escape. That woman worked at the jail as an english teacher and may have provided information helping them get away. Abcs matt gutman joining us from santa ana, california, with the very latest on the search for the two other inmates this morning. Hi, matt. Reporter good morning, dan and paula. That first inmate casually surrendering behind me while smoking a cigarette but so far no indication so far that the other two escapees have any inclination of giving themselves up. These are the kind of guys with torture and kidnapping on their rap sheets, one reason why the u. S. Martih marshals are involv focusifocu focusing its search on central california. This morning that exclusive video, the moment fugitive bac duong surrenders then nodding to deputies as hes escorted back to jail and doing more, coughing up key information. He is cooperating. He is providing us information. Reporter down from fresno, california, where abc news has learned the other two fugitives, Hossein Nayeri and jonathan tieu, were last seen at this motel here as late as tuesday. Police suspect they were there until late thursday. Earlier friday at this Mechanic Shop duong turning himself in. In that surveillance video, he calmly lets police cuff him. Why did he choose this place . Were just friends. He knows us and he wants to make sure that he gets caught safely with nobody getting hurt. Reporter then officers with aballistic vests move in. We watch as they scour for evidence. Officers have been searching this entire area. Right now theyre focusing on those containers with canine units but still those other two inmates remain missing. Last week duong stole the white van the trio made off in. If duong was in charge of transportation, police say Hossein Nayeri might have had the task of information somehow coaxing his jailhouse english teacher to give him more than language tools. A google earth image on paper that showed an image of the entire central jail complex as she played a significant role in the planning. Reporter the teacher, 44yearold nooshafarin ravaghi, who authored illustrated childrens books had developed a relationship with nayeri whose rap sheet includes torture and kidnapping. We do know that it was much more closer and much more personal than it should have been. Reporter investigators tell us that that College Level english teacher and her felon friend exchanged deeply personal letters which the jail did not pick up and officials also didnt notice that all three escaped inmates made it to central california. Theyre now telling us theyre solely focused on finding that white gmc van. They say they find that van they can find those escaped inmates. Paula, dan. A wild story and its not over yet. Matt gutman, thank you. Lets check the weather now and get it back to indra petersons. Indra, good morning, once again. Last weekend we were watching a low in the east coast producing that blizzard but now all eyes are going to be on the west coast. Were going to be watching this low coming out of california and watch what happens. It strengthens and pretty much looks like a big bullseye right in the middle of the country. Notice how close the lines are. Thats how you know well be talking about strong winds around iowa. So denver, iowa, could be talking about blizzardlike conditions as we go in through monday and tuesday. Thats what everyone will be talking about because of the caucuses but what meteorologists are going to be watching is what is going down in through the south, a potential for severe weather. Were talking about a potential for longlived tornadoes, large hail, strong winds out there. Really going to head out towards nashville and new orleans as this major system makes its way across the country. That weather brought to you by kay jewelers. But, seriously, this is a huge system going across the country, going to be affecting the caucuses and really a lot expected in the gulf, as well. All right. Political ramifications. Indra, thank you. Coming up here on gma, something apolitical, we promise you. Shredding on the slopes. Wait till you see the crazy moves at the x games.
