Good morning, and we are coming on the air in the midst of a major breaking weather story. The most powerful hurricane ever to hit the western hemisphere threatening mexico and texas. We want you to take a look at this video from mexico. A truck flipping over in the high winds on a freeway in mexico. The storm made land fall overnight. And quickly weakened as it hit mountainous terrain. Its dangerous and already headed to texas. A state dealing with devastating floods. We are Team Coverage with rob standing by in texas. But were going to start here with matt gutman on the ground in mexico. Matt . Reporter good morning, dan. It took us six hours to get here. That is how impassable the roads on. The government says that this is one of the towns hardest hit in the wind gusts. The wind shredding everything in sight. And this town like so many others around here is a ghost town this morning. This morning, we are getting our first look at the damage Hurricane Patricia left behind. A tropical nightmare for vacation goers, the lounge area hit by torrential rain and winds against the windows. People forced to shelter, looking out from the hotel rooms. Whipping through towns with 165 Miles Per Hour winds. The roaring currents in the streets making travel nearly i78 possible. Ambulance rescue, barely able to plow through the brunt of the storm. And watch the truck hydroplaning across the highway, spinning out of control from the dangerous high winds, smashing into the median before tipping over completely. From the International Space center, Hurricane Patricia seemed so smother a good part of the globe. Tens of thousands of tourists evacuated, crammed on buses. From Puerto Vallarta to guadalajara, where we found this couple camping out of the airport. We feel this is the safest place. We talked to the lady coming in to clean our room. And she hugged us and she was crying and we were crying. Reporter traffic at a stand still. Puerto vallarta boarded up and sang bagged. Friday afternoon, the airports along the coast all closed. Civil authorities moving in where tourists had been before. List not advising residents to seek shelter but ordering them. Many of the 10,000 americans forced to ride it out in Puerto Vallarta. Like stacy from san diego. We are a little concerned but trying to keep our game face on for the kids. Reporter an noaa Hurricane Hunter sitting in the eye of patricia when she was just a category 4. The storm didnt so much as whip through here but shred everything in eight. Even knocking over this clay water tank from this roof all the way down here. The president of mexico said the damage is less than expected in a hurricane of this magnitude. But driving in here, we saw an eerie sight. Dozens of glassy eyed people in the middle of the villages walking around. We asked them what they are going awake at 4 00 in the morning. They said the government came in there and ordered them to stay awake all night because the rivers are still rising. The danger is not over. Dan . As you saw in that report, hundreds of american tourists have been caught in the path of this storm, including elizabeth and oscar vargas who are in the middle of their honeymoon. We spoke with elizabeth by phone just moments ago asking if her hotel was ready for this. It didnt seem that way. It seemed like it was happening fast. And everybody was evacuated and we werent. That was concerning. They had us stay in a Conference Room big enough for anybody here. So youre on your honeymoon. But youre staying in a Conference Room with a lot of strangers. How was the night . We actually didnt have to stay the entire night. We went in the about 3 00 in the afternoon and they held us there until 10 00 p. M. And then they made an announcement that the government said it was safe for residents to return back to their room if they wanted. So the worst is over. Can you get back actually to honeymooning . Well, we were scheduled to fly out saturday, which i think is today, a little disorienting. But our flights been canceled and now the main concern is landslides and flooding and everything. So we dont really know when were going to be able to get back home at this point. I think were going to be here at the resort at least another day. And its pretty rainy. When the storm was barreling in, why did you decide not to just take off. Yesterday morning, we woke up and we went into town. And i had a mishap where my atm card was eaten by an atm machine. So we had limited funds down here. I was trying to get money wired from family and we werent able to. So actually a few things literally prevented us from being able to leave the town. So all in all, would you say it put a damper on your honeymoon or was it just a fun kind of adventure . I guess it was a pretty fun adventure. If my husband and i can survive the worst recorded hurricane in history, i guess we can survive anything. That is the right way to look at it, i can tell you after a few years of marriage myself. Nearly 16 inches of rain coming down. The torrential downpour hampering hundreds of miles in texas. Stranding drivers. We are running crazy. Its been a nightmare tonight. Reporter Mother Nature is not done yet. We are expecting a significant rainfall event this weekend. Reporter more rain on the way for an area that has gone from drought to flash floods. Over a half foot of rain falling in dallas. Look at the water trying to queez under squeeze urnds that bridge. There a no reason to go any where. Reporter and water rescue, in many areas, south of here, nearly 18 inches of rainfall has fallen. Is tripically a creek or small river, swollen to say the least. Rainfall, the radar lit up from mexico in dallas, texarkana and flash flood watching remain as well for eastern half of texas, extending to southwest louisiana. The concentration of the heaviest rains will shift to the southeast part of the coastline. Corpus christi, houston, and beaumont, texas. Watch as the shooter comes in frame, points his gun and opens fire in a courtyard thursday night. Metro Nashville Police released the footage. Now saying they are looking for the two suspects, both still at large. One person who did not attend the school was killed in the shooting. Two students hit in the cross fire injured and have now been released from the hospital. Officials say the shooting was sparked following an argument over a dice game. New details about the raid in iraq where an american commando was killed. American helicopters carrying kurdish troops and 30 commanders landed in a compound where hostages were held by isis fighters. The hostages about to be executed according to u. S. Officials. Army Sergeant Joshua wheeler, a father of four, was killed in a fire fight with isis fighter. Wheeler, a member of the dealt bell delta force, one month shy of his 40th birthday. And an act of kindness. Motivated, coming back. She was just interested in people. Wanted to make them happy. Reporter she left her home on october 11th for a 5 00 class at the church of latter day saints. But she never made it. Her body spotted in a creek near the wrecked family van the following day. When i saw the pool of blood, i knew that she and then the color of her skin. I could tell that she had died. Reporter now Police Reveal a crucial new development in the hunt for the suspect. An eyewitness saying they saw a woman fitting her description talking to a man outside of a local walgreens. The witness described seeing the male getting in the drivers seat and the female moving to the passengers seat. This sighting, the last time she was seen alive. The suspect driver alleged by crashing into a street sign nearby. Officials trying to find Surveillance Video in the area, opening to find out who murdered zoe hastings. A soggy, soggy saturday to say the least as moisture from patricia feeds up in this area. Coupling with a system coming down from the north and west. So it is just a big, wet headache. Take a look at the radar. We look for the rains to continue here in Central Texas and move down to the south. Flash flood watches are posted. The watches have been extended to southwest louisiana as patricia combines for the front, and wet weather. Here is the future radar. We focus on the most intense rainfall in the south part of texas. Corpus christi, san antonio and aursin as well. And each to houston, the Golden Triangle and southwestern louisiana. And monday morning, most of the heavy stuff should be east of louisiana and the system finally beginning to weaken. Before it does, we will talk about serious rainfall. We have seen 16 to 18 inches in Central Texas. And southern texas and louisiana could see several inches, maybe a foot of rainfall in a short amount of time. We are really concerned about the rainfall amounts hereby in the next 36 hours. And the southwest, the so cal looks dry. While some of this years deaths have still being investigated, they raise new concerns about the safety of the sport for young players. The death of 17yearold andre smith sending shock waves through the High School Football community. Passing away friday after his family says he was hit hard during a game the night before. All the things people with live and die from, i never thought it would be something as simple as that. Reporter its not yet known if his death was football related, the chicago senior now the seventh High School Player to die seven weeks into the season. Raising concerns about the safety of the sport. Football, obviously being a high velocity collision sport, you will see a lot more acute injuries. Reporter one weekend earlier, texas junior Cameron Matthews collapsed on the sidelines. His death attributed to a brain aneurysm. In september, star quarterback evan murray died after taking multiple hard hits on a new jersey football field. He carried him so well. Reporter doctors say in part due to a mono infection. But the concern is concussions. A recent study revealing over a 10yard period, only 32 High School Players brain injuries proved fatal, twice that number resulted in longdetermine disabilities. Find out when theyre hurting. When they have headaches of practice. The child is going to want to play. The coach is going to want the athlete to play. So the parent has to be the advocate. Reporter its estimated that about 12 high school and college Football Players die each year. The leading cause of death isnt football related. Its sudden cardiac arrest. It can be counterproductive.
