President trump and the first family back from a weekend in bedminster, new jersey. On sunday, the president spoke with the leaders of china and japan about the ongoing tensions with north korea and this week, a big meeting, President Trump is going to meet for the first time with the russian president Vladimir Putin at the g20 summit in europe and Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell responding now to the president s call for obamacare to be repealed even without a Replacement Health care deal in place. Mcconnell saying he will push forward with the current plan to repeal and replace simultaneously. And we begin this morning with the president pouncing on the media. President trump tweeting out this video over the weekend showing him in an old wwe clip, but in this version you can see he is body slamming cnn. This morning, the president is being roundly criticized in a bipartisan matter for that tweet and the video amping up his battle with the media and all this going on as his republican colleagues are trying to change health care and sell it back home. The official president ial tweet is an old wrestling video takedown with businessman trump. Doctored with the cnn logo covering the face of his victim. One face of the media pummeled in the world of fake wrestling. Outrage even from republicans immediately. The president of the United States is inciting violence against the free press. Reporter but the president defended by his Homeland Security adviser who saw this for the first time on this week. Youre in charge of Homeland Security there. That seems like a threat. Yeah, certainly not, though. I think that no one would perceive that as a threat. I hope they dont. Reporter elected republicans quickly denouncing the president s attack on journalists and the First Amendment. This is the fourth of july weekend. The declaration of independence is pretty darn clear about this. Thats ridiculous. Everybody is flabbergasted. He ought to stop doing it. Reporter but hours earlier, mr. Trump marking his first fourth of july as president escalated his war of words about those who write about him. The fake media tried to stop us from going to the white house, but im president and theyre not. Reporter the president in another tweet calling his comments modern day president ial. This just the latest. Days ago calling cable news hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski crazy and dumb as a rock. He has once again shown the world that he can be played. He can be tweaked. Reporter cnn the subject of the altered video said in a statement the president is involved in, quote, juvenile behavior far below the dignity of his office. The president remains in new jersey this morning. He returns here to the white house this afternoon. He has not tweeted this morning and, dan, as we mentioned earlier, very big week. The president to travel to the big meeting to meet with Vladimir Putin. So many people going to be watching that very closely. David kerley at the white house, thank you very much. So let me start with you, cokie. Some defenders of this video are saying, look, this was clearly a joke and selfimportant journalists are taking it too seriously, what is your take . You know, id prefer not to talk about the president s tweets at all. I think that hes trying to distract us with sort of bright, shiny objects from his failed programs. But the fact is that this one we really do have to talk about. It is appalling. First of all, i didnt know about the original wwe thing, which is pretty appalling in itself. But, you know, we are in a time when somebody goes to a ball field and shoots people just because theyre republicans. Not an individual as assassins normally did but just because theyre republicans. We could easily be at a time where somebody decides to shoot people just because theyre journalists and thats really scary. Matt, arent we watching a familiar ritual play out here . The president does or says something provocative, an establishment of media voices outraged, and, meanwhile, the president s base either shrugs it off or cheers him on. Is this any different to your mind . Well, youre right. The president continues to do things that are very provocative and beneath the office. I mean, i think it has had a dramatic effect since inauguration day. If you think about the president , he got 46 of the vote. Today his job Approval Rating is 37 , which means theres been a deterioration of people that support him but more importantly, for the president politically, more almost 50 of the country strongly disapproves now of this president and much of that rise has been his own selfinflicted wounds over the course of his presidency. Cokie now, of course, a huge part of the country also disapproves of the media and he has been very successful in ginning that up. You said before its a bright, shiny object to distract us. Did you think you see a real strategy here . Yes, i absolutely do. The president tweets and we talk about it. Instead of talking about the fact that health care cant get through, the tax reform isnt happening and that the president is going off to this g20 summit where he is going to meet with Vladimir Putin and what about russia and russias influence on our election . Were not talking about those things. Were talking about the president s tweets. Well, lets talk about that, matt. This meeting with putin coming up in just days. What are the stakes here for President Trump, given all of the ongoing investigations and given the fact as we pointed out over the weekend here on gma, that he said tough things about many of the worlds leaders but not about putin . I dont remember the president putting out a wwe video related to Vladimir Putin or attacking Vladimir Putin in the course of this. Hes attacked the press and its unbelievable over the fourth of july more than hes attacked russia and Vladimir Putin in this. Ill disagree with cokie which i hesitate to do on one thing. I think i think this is a distraction, but just like if somebody swims naked in the river in my backyard, its a distraction but it doesnt mean its a strategy. Yes, hes distracting this and theres big issues to face but this is a guy who has impulse control problems and not somebody that is strategic about this. He does these things then everybody else has to clean up the mess. New jersey governor Chris Christie, a prominent trump ally, seemed to enjoy a beach he had just closed to the public. A budget standoff has forced the shutdown of state beaches during the holiday weekend. The governor is seen with his family and friends. Nobody else is there. Later he was asked if he had gotten any sun and he said no, then these pictures came out and the spokesman said he was on the beach but he didnt get any sun because he was wearing a hat. Amy. All right, well, weather is also making news speaking of sunshine and wearing hats and we have Severe Weather thats actually affecting so many people. Some dangerous wildfires and many are still not contained at this hour. Ginger has the latest on that. Ginger, good morning. Amy, i want to start with the impressive pictures from maine over the weekend. Can you see this waterspout forming over a lake and then becoming one of four tornadoes that they saw in maine. That doubles their annual average number of tornadoes. I want to show you what else happened. The damage there, up to 80mileperhour winds in oklahoma. Today more Severe Weather threat. You can see along that cold front, ohio, western pennsylvania, but the bulk of it and the most severe would happen in western oklahoma and kansas. Then those wildfires, at least 30 of them burning across the west, many of them in arizona, one of them forcing evacuations this morning. Just east of tucson, tucson had its hottest june on record and look at this. As i was flying back from new zealand that picture of the brian head fire, more than 60,000 acres burned in utah. Dan. Ginger, thank you. She had a big trip to new zealand, excited to hear more about that. Were going to move now to iraq, where u. S. Backed iraqi forces are winning the battle to retake the major city of mosul from isis in what would be a major blow to that terrorist group and Abcs Ian Pannell who has spent years reporting from war zones around the world, joins gma for the first time from the front lines. Ian. Reporter dan, as you can probably see the battle for this city is still raging. But that hasnt stopped iraqi troops from holding a victory parade this morning. They say theyll recapture the city in just 48 hours. But winning the battle for mosul and defeating isis are two very different things. Three years since isis took over the city, the center of its power in iraq now finally victory is at hand. Just 100 or so isis fighters left pinned down in the old city. But fighting to the death. The people of mosul didnt choose this war and theyve paid a heavy price for it. Hundreds possibly thousands killed. Countless wounded. And made homeless. We watched dozens escape from isis limping to safety. And an uncertain future. Even so, iraqi troops held a victory parade today. The governments planning a week of celebrations. And the president s also touting victory saying theres new urgency in the fight. But i want to tell you isis, a whole different ball game, folks. Theyre going fast. Reporter however, once the militants are driven out of here, the United States and its allies still face potential threats from isis. All right, ian, thank you. And now to that fatal road rage incident that happened in pennsylvania. It left a teenage girl dead and the suspect is now behind bars after turning himself in. Bianca robersons family was in tears as prosecutors announced the man accused of killing her is behind bars. Now, roberson was preparing for her freshman year at college when police say she was gunned down over a traffic merge and prosecutors now say this was calculated. The alleged road rage killer accused of gunning down a teenager on a highway outside philadelphia is behind bars. This is the story of a savage and senseless murder. Reporter a massive threeday manhunt for 18yearold bianca robersons killer came to an end early sunday morning when Authorities Say 28yearold david desper turned himself in and was charged with first degree murder. Somebody didnt want her to merge into a lane of traffic and because of that a young woman is dead today. Reporter this picture from a highway Traffic Camera shows bianca robersons car and a red pickup truck jockeying for position as they merged in traffic. Thats when police say desper took out his handgun and shot the recent High School Graduate in the head. Investigators released Video Surveillance collected from homes and businesses nearby. It shows a red Truck Driving away from the scene. Police say they located that truck after desper surrendered and they also searched the suspects home where they discovered the handgun allegedly used to kill roberson. Now, police say this is not a hate crime, simply an act of road rage. Desper is now being held out without bail. As for the family, dan, they say the arrest hasnt eased their pain. Bianca was just days away from attending her college orientation. What a disaster for that family. Thank you very much. Were going to turn now to colorado, where a flight landing at denvers airport erupted in flames and all the passengers got out safely but now, of course, there are questions about what caused this fire and abcs gio benitez is right here with the story. Gio, good morning to you. Reporter the fire starting just as this commercial jet landed on the tarmac causing chaos and panic and when you see this video, its simply incredible that nobody was hurt. There is actually a fire. Reporter ryon, 1 of the 59 passengers forced to file onto the tarmac. They were urging others to move quickly, keep moving. Reporter the United Express flight operated by skywest from aspen had just landed in denver when the engine seen here caught fire. Its not a brake fire at all. Hes dumping fire out of the apu compartment of the engine. Reporter one woman snapping this photo moments after being evacuated with her young family. The five dozen passengers gazing at the scene as firefighters rush in dousing the flames. And skywest telling us this morning all of those passengers deplaned safely thank goodness but no doubt the investigation is just beginning into what caused that fire in the first place. Dan, amy. Six of them in just the past two weeks, including one where this young boy singlehandedly saved his family from a charging bear. Abcs matt gutman has nose those details for us. Good morning, matt. Reporter good morning, amy. Two of those attacks you just mentioned have been deadly. That boy just 12 years old may have saved his family and himself from adding to that statistic as the brown bear barreled through two of Elliott Clarks family members. Elliott was faced to snout with the bear but the kid stopped the bear with his shotgun. This morning, 12yearold Elliott Clark is being called a hero for rescuing his family from a heartstopping attack by an enormous brown bear. Clark and his family were on a fishing trip outside juneau two weeks ago when the massive beast charged slamming into his uncle and grandfather. The preteens fight or flight instincts kicking in, firing his shotgun at the animal wounding it, he and his uncle then killing it. And last week in anchorage, another young boy got a rude and terrifying awakening. It sound like a cannon burst through and hit straight past my ear. Reporter a black bear crashing through this 11yearolds window in the middle of the night. I shot up, i screamed. I turned on my light and run. Reporter his mom said sleeping below the shattered window zach survived without a scratch, though the wild intruder did leave behind these deep gouges in his bedroom wall. These clashes with nature part of what appears to be a spike in bear encounters across alaska. Six just in the past two weeks, two of those attacks deadly. Including one in which a 16yearold boy was killed by a bear while running in a popular race. He said theres a bear and from the sounds on the phone it appeared that an attack was taking place right then. Reporter now, two fatalities in two weeks is incredibly unusual. There have been only six fatalities in the previous 130 years, so whats going on . Wildlife Officials Say it could be a combination of increasing human Outdoor Activity in alaska, higher population in alaska, coupled with mild winters there which have apparently increased the bear population. So more bears, more people. Unfortunately equals more interactions. Amy. Thanks so much. I just got back from alaska and thats what everyone was talking about. We did a couple of excursions in the woods and everybody had bear spray with them and strict instructions to follow just to avoid any possible conflict but its scary out there sometimes. Nearly 30 wildfires flaming across the west causing evacuations and that intense heat keeps hitting the southwest with triple digits in the forecast and hundreds of severe storm warnings, from the plains to the northeast meanwhile, so its a busy weather weekend. It is indeed, but we begin this half hour, with the disappearance of that young scholar studying at the university of illinois. A former student from that same university is now in custody and due in court today and abcs alex perez is in chicago with all of the latest on that. Good morning, alex. Reporter hey, good morning, amy. Investigators say it was a forensic search of the suspects cell phone that helped them crack this case. This morning, brendt christensen, a former university of illinois grad student set to appear in federal court charged with the kidnapping of 26yearold yingying zhang, a visiting scholar from china. The Surveillance Video from june 9th capturing the last time zhang was seen alive, apparently getting into christensens car whom she did not know. Investigators believe she accepted the ride because she was running late for an appointment and had just missed the city bus. According to a criminal complaint, after first saying he did not recall his whereabouts on the day zhang disappeared, the fbi says christensen later told them he offered her a ride but let her out after she became panicked when he said he made a wrong turn. Everybody is stunned. Ive gotten many, many emails from graduate students and faculty expressing disbelief and complete surprise. Reporter Law Enforcement say after searching christensens phone they discovered he had recently visited a web forum called abduction 101 containing the subthreads perfect abduction fantasy and planning a kidnapping. The fbi allegedly capturing him on audio surveillance explaining how he kidnapped zhang, brought her back to his apartment, and otherwise held her against her will. The entire family is very, very devastated. Reporter investigators have not yet found the graduate students body. Her family and friends distraught. Very devastating just because everyone was really trying to spread awareness of what happened and trying to get her found. Reporter and the local newspaper is reporting the suspect even attended a vigil for zhang after she was reported missing. Investigators are now following up on this case and trying to get whatever information possible. Were going to send it back to you, amy. Incredibly disturbing and so sad, alex. Lets bring in former fbi former agent and abc news consultant brad garrett for more. We just heard alex reporting there that there are reports the suspect may have attended a vigil for the victim. How unusual is that . Not unusual at all, amy. In fact, suspects attend funerals, they actually go on searches of people they have killed, and so the idea that he would go to a wake memorial gathering of hers just does not surprise me. And brad, not surprising at all, i mean police moved very quickly in this and they were able to get their suspect extremely quick. Lucky because he was driving the car that theres a low volume type car in his particular community. They identified the car, went to him. He actually gave them consent to search and did a voluntary interview initially. And then they captured this video that alex talked about where he apparently admitted abducting her so, the real key is where is she and hopefully theyre on the trail to finding her. Certainly the family hoping for that answer, indeed. A lot of evidence as you mentioned, the Surveillance Video, and this audio that describes him holding her against her will. Think about the websites that he was going to, amy, about fantasy abductions, kidnappings. This kid must have been into some real bizarre fetish stuff i would assume based on the website he went to so who knows where this is going to lead as far as what was his real motivation. Now to the fallout from the Fyre Festival. It was supposed to be a glamorous, luxurious caribbean concert getaway and now the events cofounder has been arrested and could face 20 years in prison. Nick watt has the story. Reporter good morning, dan. There was a real promise here of unprecedented opulence. This would be a Music Festival like no other. It was a Music Festival like no other but not in a good way and as you say, the public face of this festival fiasco could now be looking at 20 years. Behind bars. This morning, billy mcfarland, the cofounder of the failed Fyre Festival is feeling the heat, charged with wire fraud in federal court in connection with his Music Festival gone wrong. The Actual Experience exceeds all expectations. Reporter 25yearold mcfarland created the event with rapper ja rule who has not been charged promising concertgoers a lavish oneofakind event with performances from bands like blink182 on the Beautiful Island of exuma in the bahamas. While celebrities like supermodel bella hadid were hired to appear in this promotional video, along with Kendall Jenner who also promoted the festival to her 82 million instagram followers. It was basically the exact opposite of everything we were promised. Reporter the event a fullfledged fiasco for people who paid thousands to attend. There was no showers. There was no bathrooms. There was no like running water. Reporter at the time mcfarland blaming a storm for the utter chaos. A big storm came through and busted our water systems. It affected half of the housing tents. Reporter leaving mobs of millennials enraged. They basically abducted us. Reporter now investigators allege that festival attendees werent the only ones duped. In Court Documents prosecutors say mcfarland perpetrated a scheme to defraud at least two individuals in an effort to secure a 1. 2 Million Investment in his company. According to the u. S. Attorneys office, mcfarland allegedly sent fake documents claiming the company made millions in revenue from 2016 to 2017 when he only earned less than 60,000. Mcfar jlands attorney telling abc news he is hardly the villain the government portrays him to be. Now, he was released on saturday on 300,000 bail. He claims he is broke. He has apparently moved back in with his parents. He is due back in court at the end of the month and, dan, he hasnt yet entered a plea. At this point he will be lucky to continue living with his parents. Thats exactly right. Thanks, nick. So she tells People Magazine she actually laughed when she got the news because thats how surreal it was that she was busy worrying about her moms brain tumor only to find out she had one too. This morning, Maria Menounos is revealing shes been facing a health crisis. Diagnosed with a brain tumor while her mother was fighting stage 4 brain cancer. The tv host first experienced symptoms a few months ago telling People Magazine she had been getting lightheaded on set and having headaches and adding my speech had gotten slurred and i was having difficulty reading the teleprompter. An mri then revealed that she had a golf ballsize tumor pushing on her facial nerves and the complex surgery to remove the tumor was june 8th, her 39th birthday. 99. 9 of that tumor was removed. The doctor tells her it was benign and after six days in the hospital, she is now back home telling People Magazine shes getting better. This is something that takes at least a month of healing but im getting stronger and stronger every day. All right, dan, well, we all know that july is the peak month for barbecues but also prime time for grill fires and firefighters across the country, they respond to an average of 9,000 grillrelated fires each year but fire and Safety Experts say a few simple steps can help keep your family safe and gio benitez is back with those helpful tips. Thats right, amy. Listen, summer just isnt summer without a good barbecue, right . But hundreds of people every year end up in the e. R. From burns they get from barbecuing, so while cookouts are fun and a time to kick back, you just dont want to let your guard down and heres why. Check out this raging inferno caused by a barbecue left unattended. A utah home destroyed in minutes. In massachusetts, a fathers day cookout turned into a near disaster when a propane grill fire spread through this house. The family managed to get to safety before the deck burned away. Grill fire extended to the second and third floor of the rear of the building. Traveled throughout the attic. Reporter according to the National Fire protection association, one of the leading causes of these fire, dirty grills, built up food and fat can lead to flash fires. Not supposed to do that. Reporter grease fires are unpredictable and can quickly become out of control if youre not paying attention. Youre multitasking. You may be watching children and other family members and were also enjoying the outside. People are not being able to focus on that grill. Reporter chief scott goldsteen heads the fire rescue in maryland demonstrates how this grill seems to take on a life of its own in a matter of seconds and he says this is the last thing to do if it happens to you. Applying water makes the fire grow. Reporter use baking soda instead, or simply close the lid. Now in this demonstration, chief goldstein shows us what could happen if a charcoal grill gets knocked over. This could be weeds and grasses, it could also be your patio furniture. Reporter watch how quickly the charcoal burns through the straw and it goes from this to this in less than 30 seconds. This is the time when you do want to use water so keep a garden hose or a bucket of water handy. All right, gio, i see you have a wire bristle brush in your hand. I clean mine with that but theres something you should know before you start. Thats right, because sometimes these wire bristles can actually get in the barbecue. You want to make sure its not in there and didnt fall off and get in there. And before you even turn it on, get a damp cloth and just wipe it all down, get it clean. Thats a good tip. Then, you also say there are some things you have actually that in your own home to easily clean the grill. Im gearing up for this one. Tell us how to clean it. So listen you got aluminum foil, everybody has it. Just roll it up into a little ball and make sure its warm and you dont want to make sure its too hot but just put it on there. Get tongs and scrub it down, make sure its warm but not too hot. But you want to scrub it down. You also want to go ahead. This was i thought you had an onion in your hand. This is an onion. Heres what you do. You also get that a little bit warm, put the onion there and spear it a little bit, why not. There you again then you clean it like. Onion gets what, it just cleans it. Well, whats interesting is and seasons it at the same time. But whats good about this, it has enzymes that breaks everything down as you just scrub it all down like that. Do you cry at the end as well . You might. I was worried about that. It smells really good, though. It does. Heres the thing weve been showing all morning, which im excited about. This is the grill bot. Check this out. I got to know if it works. Well turn it on right there and shut this. You shut this. It starts cleaning on the inside. There you go, you can hear it moving in there. But it only works when you shut once you turn it on. Were shutting it to make sure it gets in there but you there go. Its moving around. Okay. Now, do you do that when its still hot or do you turn it off. You want it to be a little bit warm, absolutely. This thing actually works. It works.
