Russia strongly condemns the air strike overnight and calls for an emergency meeting of the u. N. Security council. What comes next . This morning, the growing tensions around the world and the fears of retaliation for the missile attack. Our entire Abc News Team standing by, a special edition of Good Morning America starts right now. And good morning, america. We are live with breaking news for our viewers in the west. President trumps military strike on syria. The first direct attack on syrias regime from u. S. Forces during that countrys deadly civil war. Youre looking at strikes from two Navy War Ships right now. And we have new drone video showing the aftermath where syrian groups launched the chemical attack that took more than 80 lives. Heres what we know. The attack occurring at 3 40 a. M. Local time, taking just 35 minutes. Syrian and russian authorities saying six were killed. About an hour after that strike, President Trump spoke from florida, and we expect to see him about a halfanhour from now from maralago. The Russian Military given advanced notice of the attack just moments before it occurred. Syrian president , Bashar Al Assad, calling the attack an unjust act of aggression. Breaking in the last hour, awhat pierce to be a terror attack in sweden, you see it right there. They say several people have been injured. We want to go straight to our o military strike on the airfield in syria from where the chemical attack was launched. Reporter dozens of u. S. Missiles raining down on that syrian air base. This pentagon video showing the two u. S. Navy destroyers, the uss porter and the uss ross launching 59 tomahawk cruise missiles from the darkness of the Mediterranean Sea, traveling some 500 Miles Per Hour, smashing into the air base, the barrage the missiles destroying syrian aircraft, supply bunkers and radars at the shayrat airfield to punish Bashar Al Assad for killing his own citizens in this horrific chemical attack. Overnight the pentagon declassifying this flight path data of a syrian plane. They say it proves the Syrian Government dropped the deadly sarin gas. That deadly gas attack taking place here in idlib, the air base targeted in the overnight strike located 80 miles south. The pentagon launching at night to minimize civilian casualties. Eye witnesses telling abc news that before the raid even started, syrian officials began evacuating personnel and moving equipment away from the air base. This morning, the aftermath, debris and death, according to the syrians. The Syrian Military condemning the strike. This video statement saying the attack killed six and wounded a number of people, but whatever loss the Syrian Military suffered, for President Trump there was no question that what those civilians suffered deserved a response. It is in this Vital National security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons. And a little more about those tomahawk missiles. They were introduced in the 1970s and widely used during the 1991 gulf war. They cost about 1. 4 million each and are capable of traveling long distances and obviously they are not manned, reducing the risk to personnel. As you pointed out, this is a swift decision from President Trump, made the final decision Late Afternoon yesterday, it all unfolded quickly after that. This is a plan thats been on the shelf for a long time. Many plans on the shelf, and secretary mattis introduced a lot of options to President Trump. He decided on this one, this fairly small attack. 50 cruise missiles is a lot but just on that one airfield. President trump delivered that statement an hour after the raid after his dinner at maralago with the chinese president. Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children. It was a slow and brutal death for so many. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack. No child of god should ever suffer such horror. Lets bring in chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl who is there in maralago. Jon, before that chemical attack, President Trump consistently said syria is not our fight. Last night he said protecting americas National Security required that retaliation. Reporter this is dramatic change in the president s approach to syria. As you point out, he said syria was not our problem, back when he was a president ial candidate. He has said point blank that seeing those images of that horrific chemical weapons attack, particularly the children, and one image in particular, a father holding his ninemonthold twins, both killed in the chemical weapons attack, that those images prompted such a dramatic change. Also, amy, a change in the president s approach potentially here to russia. We heard from secretary of state Rex Tillerson last night after the president spoke and he pointed the finger at russia, saying, either russia has been complicit or russia has simply been incompetent. Of course, russia has been Bashar Al Assads greatest ally. Jon, right now happening in maralago with you, President Trump meeting with president xi of china. How is the meeting going so far . Any word . Reporter well, the meeting has been very, very highly choreographed. Of course at the top of the agenda at this meeting is the north korea threat. North korea is rapidly advancing their Nuclear Weapons program. The president made it clear going into this that he wants china to put more pressure on its ally, north korea, and in doing this attack on syria there is a message here, potentially a message globe atly. We heard from secretary of state tillerson saying this clearly indicates the president is willing to take action when called for, and the president has suggested that if china doesnt deal with north korea, the United States is prepared to do it itself. Jon karl there at maralago, thank you, jon. We turn now back to the u. S. Missile attack on syria. That countrys 51yearold president , Bashar Al Assad, rose to power following the death of his father. He was initially viewed as a reformer until squashing the 2011 arab spring uprising in syria, eventually leading that that civil war. Abc news Alex Marquardt is on the ground in beirut with syrian reaction to the strike. Good morning. Reporter good morning, amy. Thats right, Swift Response from the Syrian Regime this morning which called this act an aggression, the Syrian Military of course lost those six soldiers. They havent admitted to big material damage but the real condemnation is that with this strike the u. S. Is now a partner with isis. As far as we know president assad is still in damascus. Hes not expected to want to escalate this but take this as a shot across the bow that its intended to be. It was met with widespread criticism by assads friends, widespread praise by his enemies. Its been called dangerous, destructive, and a violation of International Laws. But theyre not expected to want to retaliate either. The strongest show of support coming from israel which has been hitting targets in syria for years. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated. Alex, thank you. Sharp criticism today from russia which has been a close ally of the assad regime. We want to get more from our chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran. Reporter so much for that trump putin romance. The kremlin declaring that, quote, president putin regards the american attacks on syria as an act of aggression and violation of International Law under a farfetched pretext. Moscow is also saying the attacks have dealt a serious blow to russian u. S. Relations. Its not just words here. That crucial air safety agreement in the skies over syria is a channelled communication to make sure theres no conflicts, they have been shut down today by moscow. The pentagon warned Russian Military in advance of those strikes and the Russian Military announcing that it will bolter its military to prevent any further strikes. Any support from our allies in europe . Especially nato countries, cha chancellor Angela Merkel saying the responsibility is solely Bashar Al Assads. The europeans like that this attack was justified in their mind and the target was legitima legitimate. Now they want political leadership, some International Peace effort to stop the syrian war under u. N. Jurisdiction. That will be a harder sell with President Trump i think. Thank you, terry. Lets break down what might come next with our military analyst stephen ganyard. As martha was saying, this was a targeted strike, proportionate strike so far. Much more about sending a message than degrading the Syrian Military. Thats right, george. We see this was nothing more than a single airfield. So by keeping the target set to one small area, i think the president is sending a clear message, knock it off, dont do it anymore, but he passed up any opportunity to seriously degrade the Syrian Military or do anything that would lead towards regime change. The white house signaling this is it for now as well on the escalation front, but they have a lot of complicating concerns on the ground there in syria. Of course there are u. S. Forces on the Ground Fighting isis and weve had some limited cooperation with russia also in that fight against isis. That seems to be suspended right now. I think the russians will eventually back off. Its in their best interest that the u. S. And Russian Forces deconflict and dont cause an incident either in the skies or on the ground on syria. So i think the russians will come back and fairly quickly resume the status quo after this calms down for a day or two. The white house saying they dont want a big escalation right now. The big question is can they avoud it . If theres a reaction from assad and the russians, what does the Trump Administration do next. Thats whats missing for us. We dont know what the strategy is. Its one thing to say im not going to signal what my tactical moves are with the military, but very different to set a strategy, the goals and how youre going to accomplish them. The strategy of regime change would require a far, far more robust military operation. It would. Back in 2013 the pentagon presented president obama with a wide range of targets that included military sites, military intelligence sites, and leadership sites, frankly, targets that would have threatened Bashar Al Assad himself. We didnt see that tonight or last night. What we saw was a very small defined target that was clearly intended not to kill people, not to punish the military but to send a message to assad himself. A small first step. Thanks very much. Back in washington, lawmakers were divided on their reaction to President Trumps order to strike syria, especially without consulting congress. Abcs cecilia vega joins us now with that part of the story. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. The reaction here in washington was just extremely swift. Many republicans praising the president for taking what they see as a very divisive action. Look at what senators john mccain and Lindsey Graham had to say overnight. This is a quote. Unlike the Previous Administration President Trump confronted a Pivotal Moment and took action. Even some republicans are critical of President Trump right now, saying that he should have sought congressional approval before taking this action. Theres debate about whether he really actually needed to do that. Overnight senator rand paul, republicans, sounded a lot like candidate trump in his previous conditions on syria. He said syria will be no effort. Amy, President Trump in the past had been very critical of president obama for not seeking out, immediately anyway, congressional approval on attacking syria. So a bit of an about face here. Cecilia, last night we heard from one of President Trumps biggest critics, Hillary Clinton, and it certainly sounded like and this was even before it was announced that a raid had taken place. She was on the side of taking action. Reporter she was speaking at a womens sum it in new york and youre right this happened hours before the attack was actually announced. It sounds like she was going even further than what President Trump did overnight. Take a listen to what she had to say. I really believe that we should have and still should take out his airfields and prevent him from being able to use them to bomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them. Reporter so multiple airfield strikes on multiple airfields is what she is calling for. Amy, Hillary Clinton was even much plaorns for syria than her opponent, donald trump, was during the campaign. Cecilia vega, thanks so much. Lets go back to brian ross. Brian, a lot of people talking about the overall impact that this raid may have on our ongoing war on terror in that region. Precisely, in this complicated dynamic in syria, anything that weakens the assad regime could have the unintended effect of helping isis and al qaeda terrorists based in syria who also seek the end of the assad regime. Weve heard reports this morning from the region that isis followers see the u. S. Attacks as worthy of celebration. And thats the last thing u. S. Military planners wanted to do as they set out this attack. Enough to send a message, as weve heard, to assad, but not enough to bolster the Terror Networks which have been under sustained pressure from u. S. And coalition partners. How real are the fears of retaliation . The growing number of troofs face the most immediate retaliation, but theyre fully equipped to handle anything that syria can throw at them. The concern is whether iran or hezbollah would take on syria overseas. That threat is not considered serious but it cannot be complete lly dismissed. It is not being dismissed by authorities here in the United States. Pierre thomas covering that part of the story. Reporter good morning, george. Given the serious strike, fbi and Homeland Security officials are consulting with National Security leadership about how this might affect us here at home. As it are elats to syria, it turns out there are specific threats to consider and there have been plans to deal with those potential threats. First theres concern that the Syrian Government might have operatives and sympathizers here in the u. S. The fbi may step up surveillance and do interviews with syrian nationals like they did in 2013 when the Obama Administration was considering a military strike following a chemical attack in syria. Theres also concern about supporters of iran, including hezbollah and the potential of Cyber Attacks from hackers in iran and syria, and theres always the threat of home grown radicals. What we are seeing in stockholm, terror will be on everyones mind today, george. No question about that. Pierre thochmas, thank you. A lot of weather headlines. Ginger take it away. The heavier rain from monterey and the coast and then snow and wind alerts. 40 to 60 Miles Per Hour gusts in some of the mountain passes and higher. That will stay through nevada and utah. We have winter storm warnings, were talking about more snow on the order of feet of snow in the sierras, slamming into south of the bay area. You can see all of this by the next several days through the weekend. Speaking of the weekend, lets get to the weekend getaways. Good morning. Im abc7 news meteorologist mike nicco. Sue hall is in for a look at the traffic this morning. Wet on the roadways. We had a lot of solo spinouts this morning and an issue with the bay bridge metering lights and metering the car pool lights and it was a problem caused by apparently a power outage at the toll plaza and and looks like the cash pay lanes getting by without delays and the fast track and car pool lanes are very slow this morning so just sort of an opposite situation happening there than what should be. Westbound 580 after grant line, we have a stall blocking a right lane. You can see some minimal slow traffic there from the 580 205 merge. Reggie . Much quieter this morning but we have residual showers out there, especially deep in the south bay and San Francisco up into the north bay. But all of that is going to stay below the thresholds of yesterday and i dont expect the damage that we had. So for today, a random shower temperatures low to mid60s. This evening, have an umbrella. Air strike in syria. It shows the base after the missiles hit overnight. And we are just learning the missiles launched from two Navy Warships in the mediterranean hit about 20 syrian planes at that airfield. A statement just coming in from the syrian president s office calls the American Action aggression, irresponsible and shortsighted. Also breaking right now, were following a terror attack in stockholm, sweden. A truck drove into a department store. Swedish police say there are several injuries and the president obama saying there are two dead. Brian ross back with us right now. Youve been tracking this for the last hour as well. Very serious situation. Reporter indeed it is, george. The swedish Prime Minister saying sweden has been attacked in what he calls a likely act of terrorism. A large truck ran down a group of pedestrians in a shopping area of downtown stockholm and then crashed into a department store. A Stockholm Police spokesperson tells abc news there were a large number of people injured and the Prime Minister says at least two people are dead and one person has been arrested. Swedish Television Video of the aftermath shows police and fire trucks at the scene in what appears to be flames at the front of the truck. Some people at the scene have reported hearing gunfire, but that has not been confirmed by swedish authorities, and well continue to monitor these developments throughout the day. Brian, thank you. We want to return now to jon karl whos in florida where the president is meeting with chinese president xi. We do expect the president to speak and address the nation shortly but in the meantime, lets check in with jon. Reporter amy, this certainly represents a huge change in policy of this president towards syria on his orders, you had 59 tomahawk missiles targeted specifically the airfield in syria where the syrian jets that carried the chemical weapons on that attack on tuesday flew from, that field now largely destroyed by those u. S. Tomahawk missiles. The president addressed this last night. Heres what he had to say. Tonight i call on all civilized nations to join us in seeking to end the slaughter and bloodshed in syria. And also, to end terrorism of all kinds and all types. Reporter not long after the president spoke we heard from secretary of state Rex Tillerson who said the president s actions sent a message to the world that he is willing to take action when it is necessary. Amy. All right, Jonathan Karl, we appreciate it. Thank you. Lots of reaction from capitol hill as well. Earlier this morning i spoke with republican senator marco rubio, a member of the Senate Foreign relations committee. Senator rubio, thanks for joining us this morning. Right after the attack last night you put out a tweet and said be sure of this, the wicked will not go unpunished, prove verbs 11 21 but are you confident this strike was enough to put out future attacks . I actually put out that tweet before it was publicly announced and the reason was a broader thought and that is that Bashar Al Assad and his patron in moscow are war criminals. I believe it degrades his ability. That is an important airfield. It has strong strategic value. The aircraft that were destroyed in this attack, some of them are probably the ones used in that assault. So i do think it achieves an important strategic measure, it will not degrade his entire capability to do some of this, especially as the russians continue to support him. But hes certainly not just less capable but i believe less willing to do that sort of activity because his cost benefit analysis just changed dramatically. The big question is what comes next. We just heard jon karl report from the white house that escalation according to his sources not in the cards right now. Well look, first of all, i do believe theres already ongoing work at the National Security council and other parts of the administration to come up with an overall strategy on syria. As is the case with president s, you know well, you worked in the west wing, when it comes to Foreign Policy you sometimes dont get to pick the timing. I think events got ahead of the planning here. That said, the reality is we are going to have a strong longterm Strategic Plan for syria. Some of that will be open, some will not. But ultimately it has to be in my opinion about the remove of assad and the defeat of al qaeda amounts. As long as assad is there youre going to have a radical sunni group. As long as assad is there, you are going to have terrorism emanating from syria and thats why he needs to go, in addition to the defeat of those terror groups. The president as recently as tuesday before this strike hit had accepted the reality of assad in power. His secretary of state made that point. You had even argued earlier this week that that might have sent a signal to assad that he was free to launch aimpunity. If youre assad and you see those statements you probably feel like you have license to do a lot of things and i think that calculus is now changed. That doesnt mean he wont do it again. That just means hes going to think a lot more about it, and so will vladimir putin. That said, i believe the administration is shifting in a different direction and im glad to see it. Id rather them make the right decision and not worry about the sort of questions being asked. You believe President Trump is now open to regime change . I think President Trump will have to speak for himself and the administration will have to speak for themselves but i think they understand more fully today than they did perhaps a week ago that along as Bashar Al Assad is in power, you will not be able to achieve the objective of defeating radical terrorism and islam in syria. Youve heard from some of your colleagues in the senate that they believe the president wasnt authorized to these strikes. Should he come to Congress First . The president was authorized to conduct this strike. Hes not asking for a declaration of war, hes not committing Ground Troops over an extended period of time. He was dealing with ex or gent circumstances and not only does he have the right but an obligation to act. It is important that he comes to congress because he need to pay for it. It needs to be funded on top of Everything Else and i believe thats exactly what they will do. Senator, thanks very much. Thank you. And im back here with Martha Raddatz again. Martha, when you take a step back, take a breath and you look at the events over the last three or four days, it is hard to overestimate how much things have changed now for President Trump and syria. Really extraordinary. I mean, a few days ago President Trump was saying he did not want to be president of the world, he is president of the United States and really was putting syria aside. Now, they have fully embraced what to do in syria and are trying to lead that cause. Well see what the strategy is. Continuing the pressure, we just saw it from senator rubio to move toward a strategy of regime change in syria. And that would be such a huge undertaking. I mean, not only diplomatically but militarily and what they did today may have degraded temporarily but theyll reboot over in syria. Martha raddatz, thanks very much. President trump is meeting with president xi of china in maralago right now. Were going to cover that as he comes out when he comes publicly with those comments. With els be right back. Now to a vote set for this morning on President Trumps Supreme Court nominee neal gorsuch expected to be confirmed today after republicans use the socalled Nuclear Option. Abcs mary bruce joins us from capitol hill with more on the historic proceedings. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, amy. Well, in just a few hours the Supreme Court is expected to have a new addition, judge neal gorsuch confirmed as justice gorsuch. His confirmation shaking up the nations highest court and changing the way congress operates. A Bitter Senate battle over President Trumps Supreme Court pick culminating in a move so drastic its called the Nuclear Option. The ayea 48, the nays are 52. Reporter after democrats blocked a vote on neal Gorsuch Senate republicans Going Nuclear changing the number of votes needed to confirm a Supreme Court nominee from 60 to 51. Just a simple majority. Our democratic colleagues have done something today that is unprecedented in the history of the senate. Unfortunately, it has brought us to this point. Reporter but democrats say they didnt start this war. Many are still fuming after republicans refused to even consider president obamas nominee Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy. They were the ones that wouldnt give judge garland a hearing for a year, not us. Reporter but the leader prevailed with a thumbs up from the floor. His democrat counterparts hung head low in defeat clearing the way for gorsuchs confirmation and delivering a blow to bipartisanship. Theres a reason it was dubbed the Nuclear Option, its the most extreme measure with the most extreme consequences. Reporter even republicans who backed the play are warning of the fallout. Its a bad day for the senate. That means youll probably get more ideological judges but where we are where. Reporter given those reservations, why do it. We wont have a system where we cant get judges. Reporter theyre concerned with what will come next. Were on a slippery slope towards the next breakdown which would be the legislative ru rule. Reporter theyre expected to fill that when neal gorsuch is confirmed later today. Presiding over that vote will be the Vice President , mike pence. Amy. All right, mary, thanks so much. Of course, gorsuch would restore the conservative balance of the court, of the nine Supreme Court justices five leaned right while four leaned left. When Antonin Scalia died the court was split 44 but gorsuch will give conservatives that key tiebreaking vote and dan abrams will talk about the impact. There will be an immediate one. One of the big cases comes out of missouri regarding the separation of church and state. Yeah, were talking about oral arguments literally in a week from now. So, getting gorsuch on the court now means immediately hearing some of these important cases. And as you point out in missouri a critical case there because in missouri the state constitution basically says cant use public funds for religious institutions and youve got a church saying, look, we want to upgrade our playground. Why cant we get access to some of those funds . This case is not just going to be about missouri. When the court rules on in this could have a huge impact generally on the separation of church and state. There are quite a few other controversial cases, as well, that are going to be impacted. Yeah, when gorsuch gets on the court a number of other big cases to consider, theres Voting Rights case that could come back up in North Carolina about what sorts of identification someone has to have in order to vote. Is that constitutional and pass the Voting Rights act . Act. E got a potential second youve got a potential Second Amendment fight, a big trademark case which could indicate whether the Washington Redskins could continue to use that. A lot of interesting cases that gorsuch will immediately have an impact on. And there were those cases that ended in a 44 tie. Right. Those were sent back to the pell lat courts so they could expect many of those cases to end up back in front of the court. We know youll be keeping an eye on it. Inside the white house, the faceoff between the president s chief strategist and his only soninlaw. Thats coming up. To lose weight . The president s chief strategist steve bannon squaring off with his soninlaw jared kushner. They lead competing factions with contradictory visions for the trump presidency. A high stakes struggle for influence and abcs david wright has the story. Reporter the latest clash pits steve bannon against trumps soninlaw, jared kushner, one recently featured on the cover of time as the great manipulator. The other on the latest issue of this week, americas princeling. The last place i thought i would be would be spending a lot of time in brooklyn but. Reporter kushner has long had the boss confidence. I think he likes politics more than real estate and hes very good at it. Reporter lately his portfolio has grown. Last night seated right next to the president of china at maralago. Steve bannon, seated farther away from the president across the table. This week kushner traveled to iraq to meet with the generals. And hes been tapped for a new initiative to bring Business Ideas into government. His star rising so fast, that one ridicule from stephen colbert. Okay, thats a little much for one family member. Maybe they should give middle east peace to tiffany. Reporter his rise has come at the expense of steve bannon. No long listed as trumps chief strategist. This week bannon lost his seat on the National Security council. Its not a demotion, the white house insisted, just a realignment. Why then do multiple sources tell abc news bannon threatened to resign. There are certainly a lot of talk that maybe changes are afoot. That maybe a shakeup could be present so who knows who that could impact. Reporter sources say the president blames bannon in part for the bungled rollout of his targeted travel ban. Health care is a right. Reporter followed by a Health Care Reform bill that was dead on arrival. And they say bannons public image as the populist puppet master hasnt helped. This skit from snl send in steve bannon. Reporter the president apparently not so amused. Publicly all the president s men deny any at cpac, bannon, Reince Priebus and others were all smiles despite reports to the contrary. Were basically together from 6 00 in the morning till late at night. I have a war room. He has a fireplace with nice sofas. Reporter not clear which apprentice will win, after all, were still in the first 100 days. For Good Morning America, david wright, abc news, new york. Thanks to david for that. Were here with our chief political analyst matthew dowd. Perhaps its not clear. Only one is family. Jared kushner, and that always complicates things inside the white house. Never fun when there is a fight between friends and family. If i were steve bannon i would recall what michael corleone said to fredo in the godfather. Never take sides against the family. But the problem is that donald trump came to office, not a man of fixed ideology and they really do represent two very different factions, steve bannon comes out of breitbart, altright populist, conservative, jared kushner, a moderate people say democrat from new york. He hadnt been registered as a republican before and, in fact, its reported behind the scenes steve bannon says, of course, we disagree, youre a democrat. I think all of this thats exactly right, george. It is a reflection of Donald Trumps conflict within donald trump including how much power that Reince Priebus has to settle these arguments. I think donald trump has been conflicted ever since he started running between is he going to get involved internationally, is he going to be a nationalist, how is he going to convey himself so that conflict within donald trump is playing itself out between steve bannon and jared kushner. Some of this competition can be healthy. Franklin roosevelt famously pitted aides against each other. When does it go too far . It goes too far when it spills out to the public. I remember andy card, chief of staff to george w. Bush, there was conflict between karen hughes at the white house at the time and karl rove. It hardly ever spilled out to the public. This seems to be spilling out to the public all over the place. When that happens, thats when you have real difficulty. Okay, matthew dowd, thanks very much. All right, coming up, well have, of course, the very latest on that breaking news from overnight, the missile strikes on syria. The fallout this morning. We are live in the region. And then the late comedian, don rickles, and how his influence on todays comics will live on. Snoof movantik for oic, opioidinduced constipation. Also this morning, goodbye to don rickles, the comic legend passing away at age 90, the king of zingers and one liners. After seeing don rickles perform when i was little i knew what i wanted to be, a a small jewish man. A heartfelt tribute from jimmy kimmel. We lost someone that we and i love very much today. Celebrating don rickles, a special edition of gma this morning. And good morning, america. We are live for our viewers in the west with that major breaking news, those u. S. Missile strikes on a government airfield in syria. This is the first time u. S. Forces have launched a direct attack on syrias government and heres the latest on what were learning about those 59 tomahawk missiles fired from warships in the mediterranean. All of them aimed at the airstrip where Syrian Forces launched the deadly chemical attack earlier this week. Syria and russia claims six died in that attack. Syria has called it an act of aggression and while its received some praise from members of congress, critics say President Trump should have consulted with congress before making this move. A lot of news to get to this morning. And we turn now to the very latest on this mornings terror attack in sweden. Abc news lama hasan has the latest details now from london. Reporter good morning, amy. The swedish Prime Minister says that sweden has been attacked in what he says is like an act of terrorism. Authorities saying say a large truck that was apparently hijacked ran down a couple of pedestrians in a shopping area of downtown stockholm and then crashed into a department store. A Stockholm Police spokesperson tells abc news there was a loare number of people injured and the Prime Minister is now saying at least two are dead and one person has been arrested. Swedish Television Video of the aftermath has shown police and fire trucks at the scene and what appears to be a small amount of flames at the front of the truck. Some people at the scene have been reported hearing gunfire, but that has not been confirmed by swedish authorities. We will continue to monitor these developments, amy, as they unfold. Certainly a fluid situation. Thank you so much. We are waiting to hear from President Trump. Hes been with the chinese president in maralago. Were here with Martha Raddatz. One of the key things President Trump said last night when he ordered these air strikes. He said it was in the vital interest of the United States. This was to punish Bashar Al Assad from those horrific chemical attacks. President trump saw those images and was so moved by those images that he launched those 59 cruise missiles. Were hearing 58 of them hit their targets, destroyed 20 syrian aircraft, destroyed radars, but it didnt go beyond that airfield. It took those missiles about one hour. They were launched from the Mediterranean Sea as we said, from those two destroyers, took about an hour before they hit in syria. Unmanned, obviously, so there was no risk to pilots or u. S. Personnel. But one of the things theyre really watching here, george, is we actually have 900 u. S. Troops in syria. I think people are largely unaware of that. They werent there in 2013. So this is a concern. Of course, they could be the victims of retaliation. A lot of questions now as well about what comes next in syria for the president s strategy. He emphasized this was targeted and precise as well but some pressure to escalate. Pressure to escalate because theyve talked about getting rid of Bashar Al Assad, that he shouldnt remain in power in syria. That would be a huge undertaking, not only militarily but diplomatically. Since he just changed this in the last couple of days, theres no real strategy that yet exists, certainly not one that has been articulated. And not one hes worked through yet with his National Security team, who are all relatively new to the president as well. They are relatively new but mattis was deputy secretary in 2013 so he has experience there. We are standing by to wait to hear from President Trump at maralago. In the meantime, lets turn to paula faris with the mornings other top stories. History is being made in washington today now that republicans have deployed the socalled Nuclear Option to change the rules of the senate and clear the way for Supreme Court nominee neil gorsuch to be confirmed with a simple majority. Reporter for Good Morning America, Mara Schiavocampo, abc news, new york. All right, thank you, mara. Were joined by ericka souter, editor of mom. Me. She had a baby ten weeks ago in the thick of it because here you are back at work. So what kind of feeling should new moms going back to work expect to feel . Whats normal . First and foremost we see a lot of guilt. You know, oh, my baby is so tiny. I have to rush back to work. My baby is 15, still there. So theres a lot of feelings of guilt. You feel like you want to be there for your baby but you cant because you need to go back to work. Then we have a lot of fear. You know, did i pick the right caregiver . Will my baby be safe . Am i going to miss out on all those important first moments. But i love this authors advice that one of the things you can do is have your caregiver send photos during the day so you still feel involved. That was very interesting she said that some moms ask that care givers not send pictures. They dont want to feel like theyre missing out. Point being very individual. One that works for you and thats just fine. One emotion that i think a lot of women have had. We have a lot of new moms in the audience. And momstobe. What do you do if youre harboring that kind of resentment . Youre sleep deprived, overwhelmed and what you want to be open and honest with your partner. Its not always practical to split things 50 50 but 3070 is better than nothing. You want to take a little time for yourself to get some sleep, get your nails done, whatever it is, read a book, whatever you need to do to recharge. Yeah, okay. Then finally, many women staying home after work simply not an option. So, what do you say to that . Whats the if we have to do it, what advice do you have for us . Its the Million Dollar question. How do i balance it all . One of the most important things you can acknowledge and embrace is that you cant give everything 100 all the time. You are not going to be perfect. You know, give yourself a break. And then, you know, just work hard to give people what they need but know that its not going to be perfect. Yeah, its not going to be perfect. That is the truth. Ten weeks in ten weeks in. Were you ready to go back to work . Yeah, i mean, im ready as i will ever be. Yeah. Are you giving yourself a break. Im definitely giving myself a break. Well give you one right now and i want to tell everybody, its lauren smith brody. Happy friday to everyone out there at home and happy friday to our incredible audience. Happy friday, everybody. [ applause ] i think for those of us who saw la la land, we were blown away by the opening number, right . So great. Well, one teenager from arizona was so inspired by the movie, he decided to recreate this scene for an epic promposal for none other than Academy Award winner emma stone. Take a look and see what he did. Table 29 youre an oscar winner i have two of my own so maybe i can buy you dinner itll make my night and maybe make yours too the young man behind the viral video is Jacob Staudenmaier and he is joining us from phoenix, arizona. Good morning to you, jacob. [ applause ] how are you guys doing . All right, so the video was great. I watched the whole thing. How did you come up with the idea . Well, there were a couple factors that played into it. But first of all, the initial inspiration was a kid that went to my school about three, two or three years ago, he actually promposed to miley cyrus and gave me a big inspiration. I thought i had to follow it up and having seen emma stone in la la land, absolutely killing it in her performance, i saw the movie three times myself. And especially knowing that shes from arizona, i thought it just would be a perfect idea on being an aspiring filmmaker i knew i had to be big and ambitious with it. Go big or go home. I love it. [ applause ] jacob, has anyone told you you look like ryan gosling . Well, it started out as a little bit of a joke in my film class and kind of grew from there. So i thought it would be kind of a funny thing to put in the video but now its just spread around and i dont think anyone is going to let that down at my school anymore. You must [ applause ] well, jacob, there are much worse things than being compared to ryan gosling, i think youre doing okay. But how did you convince everybody to be part of this . Well, i mean ive done a lot of crazy projects before, obviously nothing as crazy as this, but my friends know that i love film and that im very passionate about it so i think once they saw the lyrics and that i was trying to make this a reality they wanted to be a part of it and, you know, be in that video. Jacob, your mom had a role with this too. She worked on the set. What was her job on the set . Well, she was the selfproclaimed snack mom that she liked to call it. [ laughter ] where she, you know, delivered food to everyone which is always a great job. But shes just a great motivation for me as is my father and my whole family and all the friends there, everyone was just great support and helped make that happen. All right, jacob, heres the big question, everybody is wondering have you heard back from emma stone . I have. [ cheers and applause ] i have a letter right here. So, emma said, jacob in all caps thanks for making the greatest proposal ive ever received. I cant tell you what an honor that was and how much i smiled through that entire beautifully orchestrated video. Im in london working but i hope you have the best time at prom and im grateful you thought of me. Thank you in all caps and she added p. S. , i do see gosling around the eyes. Love, emma. [ cheers and applause ] thats so great. I tell you what, jacob, if emma says it, it must be true. She would know. Youre still going to the prom, right . Oh, of course, yeah, im going to have a great time still with all my friends. I tell you what, jacob, it was very creative. Its really awesome. I know youre an aspiring filmmaker. We wish you the best. Maybe one day youll be on the show talking about your next hollywood hit. Thanks so much for having me. Youre welcome. Thanks for coming on. Thank you, great job. [ applause ] what a really what a really talented kid. He shot that in less than two hours, an hour and a half, and had everybody in and out and, you know, really talented kid. Yeah. Well go from one talented kid to a gifted actor. His name is chris evans. Hes putting away his captain america shield for the new feelgood family movie gifted but hes still a superhero as a single man fighting to give his math whiz niece a normal life and had a chance to sit down with chris and talked about his new leading little lady. We discussed this ad nauseam. Whats ad nauseam . You dont know . It looks like someone needs schooled. Your chemistry with mckenna grace in the movie gifted was incredible. I mean, it was like truly uncle and niece being that you are an uncle, did that help you in this movie relate to her . Shes, you know, 11 going on 40. One scene in particular we have on the beach where shes crawling all over me and i always said to the director, you know, what my nieces and nephews do, they not only use you as a jungle gym but i have a nephew who will walk up to me and put his arms out like that and that says he wants to be swooped around and you have that kind of shorthand familiarity. The way she grabs your hand and rubs your hand at the end, its amazing i notice that you know. I noticed it. It touched me. I was crying. I was crying. I was looking at some show the other day and i saw you tap dancing. Oh, yeah. I was like, this dude can do anything. So, first thought came to my mind are we going to see you in a movie or youre in broadway. Yeah, yeah, i think i might do a show next march but i would love to do some sort of a film. As of late, you know, musicals are doing so well and theres always been rumblings of a guys and dolls remake or a west side story remake. I have a feeling you just threw your name in the hat. Back here on a breezy morning in new york city, broderick, where are you from . Augusta, georgia. Youre helping them out. Augusta, georgia. Home of the masters. Hey. We actually have something that affects me and probably a lot of you, the pollen report, guys, this is exciting. Are you ready for this brought to you by claritin. Im always sneezing. Im a mess in the good morning. Scattered light showers possible today. Theyll become more numerous at 7 00, possibly heavier with some thunderstorms mixed in. Weve got a light saturday, this one just said, dad, chill. Youre going to take photos. Its going to be great. George, back up to you. Thank you, ginger. Up here with matthew dowd, chief political analyst. Not used to being upstairs. No. Youre up here because youve written a new book called a new way embracing the paradox as we lead and serve. And in this book you draw on your work in politics and your work analyzing politics but also as part of it i love this idea. You took a pilgrimage to the Spiritual Centers of five major faiths. Tell us about that. Came from ive been a searcher my whole life. Im catholic. I grew up catholic. But at some point a lot of things happened in my life and over a span of a few years i lost a son, i lost a daughter and jettisoned my political career when i had the public break with george bush, my son went to iraq, did two tours in iraq. Even as you were criticizing the war. Even as i was criticizing the war. And in the aftermath of that, i had a dream that said i was going to walk in these hinduism, judaism, buddhism, christianity and islam, and so i did. I spent 40 days india, turkey, jerusalem, and ended in assisi and it was an unbelievable experience. What did you take from it and learn from it . You go in with ideas and you come out of it having learned much more and you actually get what you needed so instead of what you wanted you get what you needed. It was hard, but what i came away from it with was how much all of these faiths and how much were all bound together and how much similarity there are when you get to the basis of them and humanity, what binds us together and the leaders of those faith, how much they speak in the same way and appeal to us in the same way. All of them, you say, and its the title of your book, embrace the paradox. What do you mean by that . The paradox, were often pushed into false choices. You have to be this way or this way. We see it in politics on the parties but in life generally. Youre pushed one way or the other. Youre pushed you have to embrace peoples fears or appeal to their love and my thought in this is the greatest leaders have basically found a different way. They found a way to embody both of them. On that point fear and love, Martin Luther king. Martin luther king is who i sort of think symbolizes that. The thing about Martin Luther king, he understood peoples fears and spoke to them but also had great appeal to love. He fought against hate. He fought against all those things and so he understood the fear of people. But he brought to them a place of compassion. Another paradox, realism and idealism. President reagan was very good at that which is idealism you have these ideals especially as a president , this is what i want and stard stand for, and then youre confronted with the world as it is. And you have to make a decision based on those ideals but with realism, and he did very good. One twitter question from kendra jones. What do people need to look for in candidates to ensure good leaders to bridge that division and animosity we see so often . Many things but i would say first integrity. A level of integrity where what they think and what they say and what they do as gandhi said are in alignment. If you find a leader whether in a neighborhood or a president of the United States, those are the leaders that i think are going to do very well. A lot of great lessons in the book called a new way.
