Reporter robin, good morning. The brazos river is a quarter mile away, yet, you see just how much it has spilled into this neighborhood, lapping the doorsteps, and residents here ordered to get out. Wow, you can see the two other tails. Reporter overnight, at least three tornadoes striking the colorado nebraska border. Watch as this tornado rips across a farm before suddenly taking a sharp turn. Watching it go right straight towards my house. Dear god, i hope it doesnt hit it. Oh, my god. Reporter the farmers house luckily spared, but his shed wiped out. I watched it go up and about in about five seconds. Reporter in texas, helicopters called in to rescue residents north of houston. At least six dead and two still missing after parts of the Lone Star State received almost two feet of rain. One of the missing, a 10yearold boy who fell into the swollen brazos river while fishing. Its frustrating that we have the family here and they need some closure and we havent been able to give it to them yet. Reporter drone video capturing rivers spilling into streets and bearing into homes. The Colorado River four feet above flood stage and still rising. In wharton, this family evacuating for the second time in two months. Aint nothing you can do. Reporter the river is expected to crest later today. This is the worst flooding here in over a hundred years and residents here are hoping for some relief from the rain. George. Okay, phillip, thanks very much. Lets get more on this now from ginger. As phillip said right there, the river is still rising. More rain coming. Even when they have a dry day the rivers will still rise because they swell after the rain has fallen. But there is more rain on the way. Places like austin, texas, that have had more than 15 inches of rain this month, their average is closer to 4. Thats why we still have these flood warnings surrounding houston, much of east texas, again, drier today but look at the storms that come through wednesday night and then the rainfall rates, decent through the eastern half but by this weekend an upper level low is going to sit there and theyre going to get drenched again. Hillary clinton changing her plans heading to california early where shes facing a tough battle against Bernie Sanders. We are heading for a california showdown where overnight Bernie Sanders showed just how tough he is when protesters tried to disrupt his rally and physically confront the 74yearold candidate. Over the weekend Hillary Clinton warming up to those hometown crowds but this morning, trouble out west. Clinton now changing her plans heading out to california earlier than expected where the biggest primary yet may be in play. I have been just amazed by the kinds of turnouts weve seen here in california and the Energy Behind those turnouts, and if we go in there with a lot of momentum, i would obviously hope to come out with the nomination. Reporter sanders already there and overnight, a scary moment, Animal Rights protesters rushing his stage at a rally in oakland. Step away. Reporter secret service jumping in to protect the candidate. The protesters dragged out, some by their hands and feet. We dont get intimidated easily. [ cheers and applause ] reporter sanders also refusing to surrender the nomination even after calls from top democrats. He ought to be able to read the signposts as well as anybody else and if he did that, he would know that its all but over. Reporter and donald trump who has locked up his nomination expecting historicsize crowds at the Rolling Thunder biker rally in d. C. I thought this would be like dr. Martin luther king where the people would be lined up from here all the way to the washington monument. Right . Reporter but what really set him off a tweet, Weekly Standard editor and abc news contributor bill kristol tweeting on sunday, there will be an independent candidate, an impressive one with a strong team and a real chance. Trump tweeting back, if dummy bill kristol actually does get a spoiler to run as an independent, say goodbye to the supreme court. Now, organizers of that independent Draft Movement tell us nothing is imminent. Kristol for his part is staying coy. Before i go, sanders doing some trashtalking on twitter late last night, bernie sending this tweet, last week golden state was down three games to one. Tonight, they finished off a great comeback in california. I like comebacks. Sanders setting the tone for next week. Okay, tom, thanks very much. Lets dig in with jon karl and matthew dowd and lets begin with this delegate race on the democratic side. Hillary clinton worried about california but she could go over the top even before those votes are counted. Reporter oh, absolutely. This would be a much bigger comeback than what we saw in the nba. Take a look at this. When you look at the numbers she only needs 73 more delegates to clinch with six states voting next tuesday. That means she is almost certain to go ahead of the mark she needs to clinch long before they count the votes in california. And how about the republican side . Reporter well, of course, donald trump is already clinched but, george, this isnt just a win, this is a win that is historic. Take a look at the numbers. He already has more raw votes than any other republican candidate in the primaries and he will likely get a million more in california alone on tuesday, so this is not just a win but as he might say a huge win. A huge win. Thats right. Lets bring in matt dowd now on this third party possibility coming up. We dont have the details on who it may be or when that person may getting in but you can understand why donald trump is tweeting about that. This candidates likely to hurt him more than it hurts Hillary Clinton. We think its likely to hurt him more. Why it keeps getting talked about, george, we have two unpopular likely nominees in the major party that creates a window of opportunity but i have to say bill kristol has been talking about this, hes a little bit like commissioner gordon shining a bat signal over the white house hoping that somebody will show up and save the day and save the gop in the course of this. I think its a still real possibility and i think theres a real push for this to happen but i dont think nobody has shown up yet to take that banner and save the day. That is true, jon karl. A lot of people have said no. Mitt romney said no, former senator tom coburn has said no. What kind of person are they hoping to get here . Well, i talked to bill kristol about this yesterday. He says hes looking for somebody who is known perhaps not extremely well known but somebody who has served his country and he did say his country. Somebody who has some political experience, sounds like hes talking about a military person, george, but, again, there are so many people that have turned down the chance to run. Its hard to see who hes going to get. Meantime, there is another Third Party Candidate out there, theres libertarian gary johnson who won the nomination over the weekend. Thank you both. A planes tire catching fire while taxiing down the runway and fires crew rush in to get passengers off the plane and put out the flames. Abcs david kerley has much more. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, robin. You felt the thrust of that plane as youre screaming down the runway and all of a sudden, that tire blows and then it gets even worse. For the United Airlines flight leaving for tampa trouble before takeoff. Our ground crew is telling us that the fire on the united jet is getting bigger so please hurry. Reporter it was one of the 737s tires blowing out just as the jet is gaining speed down the runway. A bad situation that gets worse when the tire catches fire. Flames and smoke as rescue teams rush to the tarmac. Were trying to extinguish it now. It keeps flaring back up. Reporter passengers heading for houston could see it out their windows. All of a sudden pretty loud bang. Little unnerving to sit on the plane seeing smoke come up around all wings but you could see the tires were shredded and or melted. Reporter this video showing the frightening scene, smoke surround the plane, foam being spread by firefighters. Oh, my god, were gonna die. Reporter finally, everyone evacuated by stairs with no reported injuries. Any time you have a tire blowout on takeoff in a 737 or any jetliner there is a danger there of running off the runway or having other problems. Reporter united says it was going to put all the passengers on another aircraft for their trip to houston and, george, if this had happened just a few seconds later the pilot would have had to make the decision, take off or stay on the ground. Fortunately, he had enough runway where he could stop and the fire crews could get there immediately. Thank goodness for that. We have the latest now on the zika virus and what it means for the rio olympics. Chicago bulls star pau gasol is making headlines by saying he may stay home. Serena williams and rory mcilroy are concerned too, as the World Health Organization weighs in. Abcs dr. Richard besser here to break it all down. Lets begin with those concerns of the athletes. Is that a reasonable concern . Well, the big risk with zika is if you get the infection when youre pregnant it can cause that severe birth defect, the small brain. For other people, its a little less certain. We dont know if in some people it can linger and cause problems with future pregnancies so, depending on how you feel about that uncertainty, some decide they want to go and others they dont. A male athlete thinking of starting a family may say its too much of a risk. Exactly. Meanwhile, a group of physicians saying its an unreasonable risk to have these games in rio. 150 of them sent a letter to the head of the World Health Organization saying its unethical to bring 500,000 people to the heart of an outbreak and it puts them at risk and when they go home they can put others at risk and athletes truly dont have an open choice, they have been training for it their whole lives. Meantime, the World Health Organization pushing back trying to put these numbers in context. Yeah, w. H. O. And the head of the cdc, they said, if you look at zika is in 60 countries, the travel to the olympics represents 0. 25 of all travel to those countries. And iraqi troops are facing more stiff resistance as they try to retake the city of fallujah from isis. Iraqi forces repelled a fourhour attack today. Theres concern isis may use civilians trapped in fallujah as human shields. Well, president obama is now saying three American Service members died in combat in iraq. The administration previously avoided the word combat saying the focus was on advising the iraqis. Well, dramatic video from europe. Torrential rain triggering this flood in southwest germany sweeping away cars killing four people. More rain fell in a few hours than normally falls in several months. And in florida, authorities are trying to determine if theres been another shark attack. This time in cocoa beach, where a boy who was bitten has now been released from the hospital. Experts are predicting a Record Number of shark attacks this year. In northern florida on sunday, a boy with severe lacerations from a shark bite and then in southern california, a woman was bitten on her torso and her shoulder. And an extreme case of road rage caught on camera. This car in tampa plowing into two people on a motorcycle. Look at that, a witness says moments earlier that driver nearly ran the bike off the road. He was arrested and the bikers were treated at the hospital. And finally, a true shocker on the golf course. Take a look at this massive alligator that strolled down the fairway in south florida. That guy is about 15 feet long. But first in this half hour, the zoo under fire for shooting and killing an endangered gorilla instead of tranquilizing him after the animal dragged a child around its enclosure and the child had fallen into that enclosure. Officials are now defending their actions. Abcs alex perez has the latest from the cincinnati zoo. And we warn you, some of the video youre about to see may be disturbing. Alex. Reporter hey, good morning, robin. The gorilla exhibit here remains closed but i wanted to give you an idea the height of that barrier that the child climbed over. This is a baby gate. The barrier was about this high three feet tall. The images jaw dropping. A 450pound gorilla dragging around a 3yearold boy like a rag doll. This morning, the cincinnati zoo defending its decision to put down the 17yearold endangered silverback named harambe. That childs life was in danger. And people who question that or are mondaymorning quarterbacks or secondguessers dont understand that you cant take a risk with a silverback gorilla. Theyre very big. A child has fallen into the gorilla cage. Reporter the nervewracking ordeal unfolding saturday afternoon. The childs mother watching from above. Mommys right here reporter Authorities Say the child climbed over the threefoot barrier, made his way through wires and bushes and then plunged the 15 feet into the moat. The gorilla cornering the boy and then picking him up. This child was being dragged around, his head was banging on concrete. This was not a gentle thing. Reporter at one point the primate stops and appears to hold the childs hand. Later propping the boy up from behind then and eventually dragging him all the way to the other side of the cage. After ten excruciating minutes, officials made the decision to shoot and kill him. Saying that a tranquilizer dart would have been too risky. They had to do something very quickly. The dart takes too long. The child would not have a chance. Reporter the child home with his family now suffering only minor injuries. This video from 2014 shows a threefoothigh railing that separates the crowd from the exhibit. The barriers are safe. The trouble with barriers is that whatever the barrier is, some people can get past it, much the same way you might lock your car and sometimes people get in your car. No, the zoo is not negligent. Reporter many taking to social media criticizing the childs parents, a change. Org petition calling for them to be held responsible for not supervising their child has nearly 300,000 signatures. But his mother saying in a nowdeleted facebook post, as a society we are quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off of their child. Accidents happen but i am thankful that the right people were in the right place. Monday, a special vigil held for harambe who was nicknamed handsome. A memorial now growing. Now word the federal government is investigating the incident, the gorilla exhibit here set to reopen on saturday. Robin. All right, alex, thank you. Joining us from miami is wildlife expert and Communications Director at zoo miami ron magill. Thank you for your time this morning and your insight, ron. The zoo in cincinnati stand by the decision that they made. Did they make the right decision in your opinion . They absolutely did, robin. This was a tragic situation. That gorilla was on loan to cincinnati from our zoo in miami so there is a personal connection there and having said that they made the right decision. I need to let you know that gorilla had no intention of hurting that child and i dont think anybody believes that. However, that gorilla was disoriented. He was agitated. He didnt understand his strength. If you watch that video you see how he takes that child into the corner. Hes trying to get away from the commotion. The child is crying. The people are screaming. This was just a perfect storm of bad situations that ended in tragedy. You alluded to it, ron. Some people felt when they saw the Gorilla Holding the childs hand and other things that they thought the gorilla was trying to protect the child but you say that just isnt so. Well, i dont think hes trying to protect the child. Hes confused. He certainly wasnt trying to hurt the child but he didnt understand his strength. And when you see him whip him through the water, as the director said, that child could hit his head on the concrete. Things you didnt see as he was lifting up the child he was banging the child on the rocks and this was becoming an escalated situation for the gorilla, hes becoming more and more upset. It was a horrible, horrible situation but that decision had to be made because had it not been made and that child had been badly injured or god forbid killed wed have a much bigger decision about why didnt the zoo do something sooner. Thats true. The threefoot barrier that we keep referring to and seeing, is there more that zoos there and across the country can do to protect those coming to see this wildlife . I can guarantee you all zoos right now are reevaluating these barriers. Unfortunately, sometimes you say the cincinnati zoo that barrier was great for 38 years and then this happens and anybody who says were fine, were comfortable, no, i can tell you every zoo is reevaluating everything right now. Probably so. Ron magill, thank you. Lets bring in dan abrams to get more on this. A lot of anger about what the zoo did and at the parents, some people saying the parents should be held responsible. Yeah, and then you got to look at this criminal suit. You got some people saying they should be charged with a crime. Its a misdemeanor in ohio about endangering children by not properly supervising them, thereby, opening them up to substantial risk. I dont think theres a chance the parents, the mother is going to be held responsible criminally. Civil, separate question, but that would require the zoo effectively suing them. I dont think thats going to happen either. Sorry. Is there any chance the zoo could be sued . I think there is a better chance that the zoo is sued potentially by the parents so that the mother could say, look, the fact that a 3yearold was able to get into that enclosure is in and of itself a problem. And its tough because, you know, when we all go to the zoo and they want to make it so its you feel like youre there in their environment but youre not and its just trying to protect us from them and also not make them so encumbered. Its so difficult. Is this a tragedy no matter how you look at it. Thanks very much. Were going to move now to new details of that deadly rampage in houston. Multiple sources now identify the shooter as a young veteran who served two tours of duty in afghanistan and, amy, were hearing now from his stepmother . We are, george, and were learning more details this morning about Dionisio Garza iii, the alleged shooter at that houston tire and auto center who killed one and injured six others before eventually turing the gun on himself. Stress can exacerbate psoriasis, eczema, acne, hair loss. You know, basically when the brain senses stress, it triggers the production of a stress hormone called cortisol and when cortisol levels in the blood rise, that can in turn trigger symptoms in the skin, so it can lead to red patches because youre actually dilating the blood vessels that are feeding the skin. So, you know, try shoot for that seven to eight hours of sleep every night. You know, yoga, meditation, massage has shown to be very effective. Breaking a sweat, getting regular exercise a couple times a week, so key for keeping those cortisol levels down. What about diet . Diet plays a huge role. I had up to 50,000 unique viewers per month and i was making up to 1500 per blog post. Reporter for three years, the 27yearold mother of three would stage and post nearly every moment of her life from birthday parties to family vacations, but she says it was squeezing the joy out of parenting and her marriage. Life wasnt nearly as peachy as the pictures she posted. Not even close. I was posting photos that were happy because i needed that post because i needed if it was a sponsored post especially i needed the happy photos, so if i had a deadline to meet the sponsored post and we werent actually having a great time, i still needed to get those photos. I dont feel so good about it but i wondered do these indulgence days hurt or help my diet. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo is getting to the bottom of it all. Reporter cheat days, an indulgent break from the drudgery of dieting often shared on social media. For the rock, mountains of fudge, Peanut Butter brownies and cinnamon buns. Jennifer aniston goes for mexican food, and for the kardashian, boxes of fried chicken. What do you see people eating on their cheat days. I see them eating everything from chips to cookies to popcorn. Chocolate, cakes, huge sandwiches, pizzas, ice cream. You name it. Reporter but can giving in to cravings one day a week help your diet or hurt it . The science is hazy but some say cheat days may help by upping production of the hormone leptin, decreasing appetite and also helping the body burn more calories after overeating by increasing metabolism. They may also have a psychological benefit. Kind of release a little bit of that pressure . You can feel motivated to stick to your diet plan because you know that youre going to have a day where you get to eat a little bit of whatever you want. Reporter but for a lot of people, these days may actually be counterproductive. If you gave me a full day to eat whatever i wanted, i could ruin weeks of good work. Absolutely. You could take in upwards of 5,000 calories. That would be a disaster. Reporter experts say it can also be hard to get back on track with a cheat day turning into a cheat week. When i counsel my patients, i actually dont talk about using cheat days. I talk more about moderation, have one meal that is a little bit more decadent. And now you have your masters in nutrition, so what is all the data tell us about dietary approaches to weight loss . First of all, in the medical nutritional science and behavioral Science Literature there is no term cheat day. Thats something we make up in tv land and society and our every daytoday life. What the data does show is you know what the best diet is, the one that works for us. Okay, so thats very, very important, and then we have to remember that the term cheating is very subjective. For one person it may be one cookie ever. For another person it might mean the entire bag of cookies so very, very subjective. Im not going to tell you which person i am. Now, j. D. , youre the executive producer of extreme weight loss and on your show the contestants are given one cheat day because the trainer chris powell allows that but you dont necessarily agree with him. In six years its the only argument we have gotten into. Hes one of the greatest trainers on the planet, right . And an excellent guy but heres my issue with it. If you are a recovering alcoholic, do you go into a bar one day a week and have a drink . No, because you cant just have one. And the people i deal with are food addicts. They need to change their relationship with food and to have a sunday fun day, which is a day full of comfort food usually comes with a side of remorse after its over and thats the part i have to deal with. A slippery slope. What happens is you start restricting calories prior to your fun day then fun day comes and its on eating as much as you can then you have to restrict again and now youre restricting and binging and now instead of just being overweight now youre an overweight person who also has an eating disorder and thats the part i worry about. And, doc, how do you feel about it . Its interesting that j. D. Mentioned something we now talk a lot about in the weight loss world and obesity medicine world which is the parallel between having a real Substance Abuse or addiction problem like alcoholism and theres a principle that is well known in that world Substance Abuse, addiction world called Harm Reduction and what Harm Reduction means, kind of think of it as the difference between idealistic versus realistic saying were going to agree that that behavior is going to occur. It gives you strategies to minimize the negative consequences that come along with that, so if youre talking about alcohol, youre going to drink, dont drink and drive and theyre using the same principles with things like overeating, so its just a different approach. In my book the best diets are the ones that are safe, simple and sustainable so you can stick with it. Working small indulgences in you go out with your friends. You say, oh, i cant have dessert. Im on a diet. Heres what you can do, be in control so order your dessert, have one or two spoonfuls, open up the salt shaker we just ordered some. And dump salt all over your dessert. That gives you a sense of control. You want tricks, heres a trick, fill up, give yourself the control and fill up a small dixie cup. Put a little bit of Chocolate Ice Cream in it. Make one for monday, one for tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday then you know thats all you can have. And once you go in the freezer and you just eat that, that puts you in control. When we think of memorial day, of course, we think of those that served us and we also think about barbecue. Yes, and grilling out and there is a question from somebody. One of your fans. She says, its from caroline, she says, i always grill pork chops with Barbecue Sauce. How can i switch things up for a bit of a different flavor . A good question. This is a beautiful spread you can serve all summer long. Wonderful for patriotic weekends, as well. We have another one coming up soon. But a lot like to use Barbecue Sauce because it gives a lot of moisture. When youre talking about pork loin chops, they can get very dry because you have the tenderloin in there and also have the loin so you have to be thoughtful with those. The first thing i like to do, a little bit of mesquite rub, gives you a lot of flavor like a dry rub is gorgeous. Thats better on the grill, isnt it . And then, you know, you can either oil the chops or you can oil the grill. If you oil the grill, you will get a lot of smoke on there so just depends what you want to do. Thats a different way of going about it. That is just four to six minutes on each side. Lets talk about bringing the moisture back in. If we dont have the sauce, we need to have the moisture. If you want something fresh and wonderful and that celebrates summer, lets talk about berries. So do you want to cook at all, lara . Oh, yes. Blueberries, one cup. Raspberries. Looks so patriotic, red, blue. Cilantro, this a berry cilantro. This is just lemon juice and salt. This is a stirrer, robin . Go, go, go. That goes over the pork chops once you are done. Oh. Im going to do it on top of this one thats just done. Wonderful. Thats a great idea like that. That does have a different little twist. Oh, sorry. Lara is good at almost everything, but its a spoon, baby. Its a spoon. Robin tried to undermine me by giving me the wrong tool. I like how the spoon helps. I like how you crumbled the cheese. Looks very patriotic. This is a summer salad. You start off with a beautiful lettuce that you love, and then theres strawberries, blueberries and some feta on top. A little vinaigrette. This is what you want at every party. This is the stuff. This is a little bit of dip underneath, vegetable dip covered with spinach then some sesame seeds and vegetables on top. Dig in. Oh, yeah. Beautiful. Isnt that great . That does look good. Now that weve been very good, dessert. Tell us about that. Those are some amazing pink cupcakes. Now, if you have kids, theyre fabulous because theyre paint pots, but on patriotic weekends, of course, you just change the icing. What is a paint pot . What that is confetti cake mix. There is one tablespoon of oil in there, right, because you need a little bit of oil but theres three eggs and instead of extra oil, youre putting in sour cream so yum.
