I wondered if there was any way i could take your photograph. Of course you can. Reporter creator Brandon Stanton has used this approach to photograph over 10,000 strangers in the city. Why new york . Why humans of new york . Its amazingly diverse. If youre going to exhibit the diversities of lives on planet earth, i dont think there is a single location that would be easier to do that than new york. Reporter the blog transformed from photos to a story telling blog. Pairing quotes with pictures. This combination led to the creation of his latest book, humans of new york, stories. Story telling. How did that come about . I realized i was already going through the effort to approach a stranger and get them to let me take their photo. It was only a small step from that to speaking with this person and learning about their lives and learning about their stories. Reporter brandon is known for his ability to get complete strangers to share intimate details of their lives. Instead of using a hightech recording device, he takes notes on a cell phone. Whats the first question you ask them . What is your greatest struggle right now . Theres something about a stranger asking you these questions. A stranger without preconceived judgments about you. Who doesnt know your story. But takes what you say at face value. I think theres something liberating about that. Reporter the blog filled with strangers on the streets of new york has over 15 million followers on social media. Those followers make up what is known as the hony community. Youre also able to raise millions of dollars for people and organizations and groups. How did that come about . We have had two fund raisers in the past six months. One raised about 2. 5 million. The other, 1. 6 million in the past six months. That is a testament of the type of people that follow humans of new york. Reporter i know that you just came back. You spent some time in europe. The syrian refugee crisis. Youre able to tell that story differently than some Media Outlets are able to, dont you think . The very first question when i stopped a syrian refugee that i always asked, tell me about the day you left syria. They would start speaking in arabic. They would stop and cry. I asked the same questions as i did anybody else. I learned their stories just as i would for anybody else. Reporter i was curious how brandon was able to get people to reveal so much about themselves. Using me as an example. How do you approach somebody . Excuse me, do you mind if i take your photograph . Reporter i dont mind. What started as a mock interview quickly became real. Can you tell me the single moment in your life you felt lost most acutely . Reporter i know this sounds odd because i have gone through hell. The loss of my health twice. My mom, my dad. Previously. When my dog died earlier this year after almost 18 years, i mean, thats the one constant in my life through all the losses i had. K. J. Was the one who got me through. And so, i it was hard to get out of bed. I was shocked. That of all the losses, my beloved pet. But it made sense in the end because, talk about unconditional love. Im telling you, brandon, it was supposed to be a mock interview because it was difficult with a big crew to get people. I said, use me as a guinea pig. Had me bawling. He has a way of making you open up. This book is fantastic. It shows despite our differences, we have so much in common. Humans of new york stories is out tomorrow. It seems incredible. He got you found this emotion you didnt think you were going to share. The beauty is, people ask us about our stories. We get to share our stories. But for most people, they dont. He said, even in your own home, people dont ask you these questions. To see people open up as they do. 15 million strong. Theyre generous. The comments section, all positives. Thats fantastic. [ cheers and applause ] misty made history this summer, becoming the first africanamerican woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary american ballet theater. The new documentary a ballerinas tale, chronicles her journey. Take a look. Its okay for you to do ballet. It can be cool. Your body type isnt going to hold you back. When she realized she had the opportunity to do that, it became less about just herself and more about what she can do the change the world. It is a beautiful, uplifting documentary. And misty, just congratulations on all welldeserved that has come your way. I think people have forgotten about the injury you sustained. This is what the documentary is about. Overcoming challenges. Yes, its a huge part of it. When i met nelson, i was performing and dealing with this injury. But hadnt yet realized the severity of it. He captured that entire journey and process, me getting back on to the stage. Which is so common as a dancer. But i also felt like this was an opportunity and platform for me to share and educate people on the history of africanamerican ballerinas that have existed for generations and generations. Give them a voice. Let people know about that. As a storyteller, you were there when after she announced the injury. You thought, my, this is a golden opportunity to show people what it takes. Yeah, you know, i mean, as a storyteller, that moment of decision when a person has to fight their way through. Misty just shes an artist. Shes also an athlete. The combination was compelling. We were able to follow her through a very painful journey to back to go beyond where she was before. To go beyond that . Yes. But i appreciated so many not just going beyond where you are. But reaching back. Looking back. Wanting to show the need for diversity when it comes to being a ballerina. Thats so much a part of my story and experiences. And i think something that people that are getting an opportunity to see this film that dont know a lot about the classical ballet world, to see how difficult it is to exist, period. But to exist when youre a minority. So it was important for me to be that voice for so many people. And say, its okay the be different. You can still succeed. Youre a powerful voice. The commercials. The broadway debut, i was there for that. And i love how you said, shes the first ballerina superstar since british baryshnikov. Shes stepped beyond the boundaries of the classical ballet world. It hasnt been since baryshnikov in the 70s to go from that world to where people at the mall know who you are. What is next for you . Its about the dance. So many opportunities coming your way. Theres so many incredible things i never imagined i would be doing. Ballet is my priority. Its my first season as principal dancer. All my focus is on the opening. Can you tell me the proper stance . Some of these animals, especially the first birth, the mother will consume the babies a lot of the time. This is a snow leopard. Maybe 100 left in the wild . We dont know. David attenborough. Planet earth. The only man to film the snow leopard. You wont believe this. The tail can be two to three feet long. Its this thick. It wraps around them like a coat. Where theyre from in in epal, tibet. Oh, this guy is scared. Feel the fur. It was the most sought after coat in the world. Its like silk, as you can see. Who is this . This is a cheetah. The fastest animal in the world. Clocked at 70 miles an hour. Beautiful. You cant see the nails. The only cat in the world with nonretractable claw. That tail is flat, not round. This animal is unbelievable. When it makes a turn, it goes through the air in the turns. The cheetah will consume its babies on the first birth.
