But were going to begin with the war on isis and the death of american hostage kayla mueller. She had been held for a year and a half by the terror group. This morning we are learning more about her life in captivity. Abcs brian ross is here with that. Good morning, brian. Reporter good morning, robin. U. S. Authorities this morning say they are aggressively hunting for the isis leaders they hold responsible for the captivity and death of kayla mueller. Including one who they fear was given her as a kind of bride in the months before the heartbreaking news of her death. Kayla has touched the heart of the world. The world grieves with us. The world mourns with us. Reporter Kayla Muellers family says it wants these photos to be how she is remembered. Released after confirmation of her death, along with a letter she wrote to her parents smuggled out last year by a hostage who had been set free. Just the thought of you all, she wrote to them, sends me into a fit of tears. There were lots of tears as her aunt and others spoke of the young idealist. In kaylas letter she wrote, i have come to see there is good in every situation. Sometimes we just have to look for it. And right now thats what were all trying to do. Reporter with muellers death now confirmed people involved in trying to rescue her told abc news they had been tracking a senior isis leader who had been given her as a kind of bride or reward. In the past weve seen that isis has actually sold off women and young girls into the custody of their fighters on the front lines. Reporter the 26yearold arizona native went to syria with a syrian boyfriend to work with war refugees. I am in solidarity with the syrian people. Reporter in her smuggled letter to her family, she described her captivity. Please know that i am in a safe location completely unharmed healthy. I have been treated with the utmost respect, kindness. But mueller still had the determined spirit that had led her to syria in the first place writing, know i am also fighting for my side in the ways i am able. I have a lot of fight left inside of me. I am not breaking down. I will not give in no matter how long it takes. The time ran out for kayla mueller. Analysts at the Fbi Crime Lab examined the photos sent to her parents, and while they were able to confirm she was, in fact, dead, officials this morning say there is still no good idea about how she actually died and no confirmation of the isis claim that she was killed in an air strike last week by jordanian pilots. Thats incredibly sad. When we got the confirmation yesterday. There were some rescue attempts . There was, over the july 4th weekend. U. S. Special forces went in and missed kayla and other hostages by just two days. Lets get more on this. President obama spoke about kayla last night on buzzfeed and Jonathan Karl brings us that. Reporter the president said his first reaction on learning that kayla had been killed was one of heartbreak but he also said that explaining to parents, like those of kaylas parents, why the United States will not pay ransom to get the freedom of hostages is one of the toughest things he does as president but he made it clear this is a policy that just cannot change. The reason is that, once we start doing that, not only are we financing their slaughter of innocent people and strengthening their organization but were actually making americans even greater targets for future kidnappings. Reporter but the problem, george, is that the European Countries have no such prohibition and routinely pay ransom to groups like isis. And jon, it comes amid so much concern that the threat it could pose to our homeland, as well. Big hearing on capitol hill today, where the chairman of the committee is saying right now, this is the largest convergence of islamist terrorists in World History in syria and iraq. Reporter yeah, and this stands in stark contrast to what the president said recently in an interview released earlier, he said that the terrorist threat is exaggerated by the media and he compared his job in fighting terrorism to that of a big city mayor trying to keep the crime rate down but his counterterrorism head at the fbi has some very stark testimony, stark warnings in his testimony today. He says there is a new wave of terrorism and he warns, quote, george, individuals inspired by foreign terrorist groups could be covertly arming themselves with expertise and tools to carry out an attack on the homeland. Okay, jon karl, thanks very much. All right, george. Now to Brian Williams suspended off the air six months without pay after he made claims that a helicopter he was flying on in iraq was hit by enemy fire. Abcs david wright has that story for us. Reporter nearly a week after Brian Williams apologized for falsely claiming on nbc nightly news that a rocketpropelled grenade struck a u. S. Army helicopter he was traveling in during the iraq invasion i made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago. Reporter the president of nbc news overnight announced williams is out, at least until august, as anchor and managing editor. This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in brians position, she wrote in a memo to staff. As im sure you understand this was a very hard decision and certainly there will be those who disagree, but we believe this suspension is the appropriate and proportionate action. Turness expressed concern not just about that broadcast but also anecdotes williams has told elsewhere. Two of our four helicopters were hit by ground fire including the one i was in. No kidding. Three students found shot and killed in a home near campus. Police overnight identified the victims as a recently married couple and the womans sister. The husband and wife both dental students had been raising money for a trip to turkey to help syrian refugees. A neighbor identified as craig hicks surrendered and has been charged with murder. The victims reportedly had runins with him in the past but police have not yet commented on a motive. Also breaking overnight, the man accused of shooting a san diego tv sports anchor has surrendered after a frantic manhunt. The victim, kyle kraska was backing out of his driveway when someone opened fire shooting out the back window of his mercedes hitting him several times. The suspect identified as mike montana surrendered after an hours long manhunt and standoff. No word yet on a motive or whether kraska and the suspect knew each other. Breaking news from that cheating scandal in Little League baseball. The Jackie Robinson west team from chicago, has now been stripped of its National Championship. After officials found the team used ineligible players who lived outside the teams district. The team manager has been suspended and the team banned from the tournament until new leadership is found. An influential federal panel is expected to recommend scrapping the warning about eating high cholesterol foods. Abcs dr. Richard besser is here with more with this. Since 1961, doctors have been telling their patients watch the cholesterol that you eat and the reason is, a connection between cholesterol in our blood and Heart Disease, but now theyre saying that the dietary cholesterol really doesnt matter so much. So tell us about what brought about this change. Well, science over time has, said, yes, cholesterol matters but the vast majority of cholesterol in our body we make ourselves, our bodies make it because cholesterol is important to cells and to making hormones and all kinds of things and your high level of cholesterol is more due to your genetics than what youre eating. So, i know people are wondering how does this affect each person individually. I cant imagine its all the same. It isnt. It doesnt apply to everybody. It may be six months before these are finalized before approved. There are certain people where the amount of cholesterol they eat it does raise their blood so wouldnt apply to them. Diabetics, it doesnt matter. If somebody put you on a statin, thats because the level in your blood is already high and wont change that at all. For other people, it may mean breakfast with eggs every day. Not such a big thing. I feel better about yesterdays omelet but if youre on statins dont change anything there without talking to your doctor and these respect approved yet but it looks like this is whats coming. Reporter robin, good morning. Taya kyle will be among the first on the stand today. Prosecutors starting with their most emotional witness in front of a jury thats made up almost exclusively women. I need you to be human again. Reporter millions have watched Sienna Miller play taya kyle on the big screen. This morning, chris kyles widow has a far more important role. She will be one of the first witnesses the prosecution calls in its case against accused double murderer eddie routh. Somebody taking the lives of two people who were there to help them, thats not ptsd in my opinion. Reporter routh is a marine veteran and his attorney say ptsd caused him to turn the gun on kyle and his friend chad littlefield at this texas gun range two years ago. He says that he killed two guys. They went out to a shooting range. Like, hes all crazy. Hes a psychotic. Reporter routh is pleading insanity. In court the jury of 10 women and 2 men see a young man in a suit and glasses. Quite a change from his mug shot two years ago and a drastic difference from these pictures just released by a Veterans Group that show routh during his service in iraq. Prosecutors hope to show jurors an even more extreme picture of the defendant. In these filings obtained by abc news, theyre asking the judge to allow evidence they say will demonstrate routh has a history of violence and drug abuse. According to the filings the morning of the double murder, prosecutors say he threatened his girlfriend with a knife. They say he was smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. Months before that, prosecutors allege he showed up at a family dinner and made threats to kill family members and himself and left shirtless, crying and intoxicated. Whats more, while in jail for a drunk driving conviction in 2012, prosecutors say he told officers, im a marine. I have ptsd. Prosecutors plan to argue thats part of a pattern that every time this young man gets in trouble he says, i have ptsd. That, of course, is his defense here. But his attorneys say this is somebody who needed help and clearly never got it. Robin and george. All right, ryan, thank you very much. A lot of people keeping this in their eyes. The satellite providers latest ad Campaign Featuring Sports Illustrated models chrissy teigen, nina agdal and cover girl hannah davis dressed in ways weve never seen them before as an obsessed cat lady, a cigarettesmoking lunch lady and a bighaired mom who all have cable juxtaposing them against images of the bombshells baring their bikini bodies, so scantily clad we cant show them to you in their original form. The ads suggesting that the socalled upgraded versions of the women all came with an upgrade from cable to directv. Some now saying the ads are sending the wrong message. One commenter posting online this is shameful. We equate the shallow job of displaying ones body with success meaning we put down women who have real lives and real jobs. Another saying, once again, advertising fails women. People will look at that and think thats just not okay. We cant demean the working class. Reporter others calling out reverse sexism online, one writing, so its fine when rob lowe as the hunky piece of man meat but when its the ladies in the same scenario, its not okay . The ads can be seen as a double standard, absolutely. Some people will look at them and think that the ads are exactly the same. What i lack it talent i make up for in courage or stupidity. We could have failed for all of us. I suppose especially me. It didnt hit me until we had already started shooting thank god. I actually play four characters in this movie. Play the actor and the actor whos directing and then two characters inside the play and then we perform a play inside of it and then theres the birdman character. You forget its a comedy and finally comedy is getting its due, i think. Well brag about you. Just a few of athe awards he has won for his role in birdman. Australian award for best actor, zag for the ensemble. Globes nbr, london critics circle. I mean i need to take a breath. Its been quite a score. And the national batting title last year. Did you .
