They are up early in hollywood this morning. Everyone ready for those Oscar Nominations coming up in just a little bit. You know how we feel about the oscars. Were not the only ones. Take a look at our studio crew. And also our studio. We are ready. They are ready, as well. Look, dressed to the nines. Oh, yeah. Because the countdown is on to hollywoods biggest night. Elegant. Indeed, they are. And then host Neil Patrick Harris getting geared up already, tweeting last night, i really need to finish counting all those ballots. So we have so much to discuss. Thats ahead. But first, were going to get started with the news and that homegrown terrorist. A young man in ohio inspired by isis and planning a major attack on our nations capital. Arrested by the fbi. Abcs Pierre Thomas is in washington with the latest on all that. Good morning, pierre. Reporter good morning, robin. Today the fbis accusing a young man from americas heartland of contemplating a massacre. The suspect, Christopher Lee cornell, only 20, seen here in a mug shot taken last night, was arrested after buying two m15 assault rifles like this and 600 rounds of ammunition. As soon as the purchase was over and he left the door, several agents came out and tackled him here in the parking lot and took him down. Reporter this is cornell in a High School Wrestling photo in more innocent days. According to the fbi, cornell was in the final stage of a murderous plot, an allout assault on congress using the rifles but also pipe bombs. The fbi locked in on cornell after a confidential informant said he had been posting disturbing messages on twitter expressing support for al qaeda and isis. One tweet stated, i believe we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks. At one point he cites the longdead Anwar Al Awlaki of al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula as having already given the thumbs up for such attacks. The fbi has kept cornell under constant surveillance since last fall, watching his every move in a classic sting. Cornells father was blunt. His son was set up. He was a vulnerable, gullible 16yearold in a 20yearold body and i think the fbi coerced him. There was no way he came up with these terrorist plots. Somebody put that in his head. Reporter cornells dad said his son was a mommas boy but the fbi claims that the young man had a dark side, his parents never saw. Thanks very much. Were going to turn to a big shakeup at the secret service. Four top officials forced out. Two more retire. The latest fallout from a series of highprofile missteps including that major Security Breach at the white house. Abcs jim avila has the story. Reporter the final straw for the secret service, that knifewielding veteran who jumped the fence and ran right into the white house making it inside the east room minutes after president obama had left by helicopter. This, following a stinging list of gaffes that include those gatecrashers that made it inside a state dinner without invites, the agents caught in a payment dispute with prostitutes on a president ial visit to colombia. The armed private Security Guard who somehow was able to get on board an elevator with president obama. And those bullets that hit the white house without the secret service knowing about them for days. Still, the president stood by the secret service. The secret service does a great job. Thank you. Im grateful for the sacrifices they make on my behalf. Reporter but a brutal report by the department of homeland security, found the secret service, an organization starved for leadership, the first step, secret Service Director Julia Pierson was forced out in october, and this morning four more at the top removed from their positions. Two more retiring. The acting director promising to do better. We are confident we can fulfill our mission with honor and restore the secret services rightful place as the most respected Protection Service in the world. Now to that new trouble for the nfl, a major test of its new personal conduct policy. Indianapolis colts linebacker josh mcnary charged with Sexual Assault just days before the teams big game for a chance to play in the super bowl. Abcs ryan smith is here with that story. After what could be one of the worst Public Relations years for the nfl with scandals involving ray rice and adrian peterson, now these charges coming just before one of the nfls biggest weekends of the year. The colts have advanced to the afc championship game. Reporter this morning, as the Indianapolis Colts prepare to face the new England Patriots sunday for a shot at the super bowl, colts linebacker josh mcnary charged with rape, criminal confinement and battery. This really will be a way to test if the nfl is serious about this new policy. Reporter according to police documents, the alleged victim says she was drinking at an indianapolis bar december 1st when she met a man and later ended up at his apartment, though she doesnt recall how. She claims a physical fight ensued followed by the Sexual Assault. Eventually, she says she managed to grab the mans cell phone and leave. It was that phone that led police to mcnary, and when they arrived to question him, they say he replied, i know why youre here. Gesturing to his bed sheets, saying, i preserved it for you because i knew you would be coming. Mcnarys attorney releasing this statement overnight, Joshua Mcnary unhesitatingly denies all accusations made against him. Now, the nfl telling abc news that the case is under review under their new personal conduct policy. Implemented in december. The policy says players charged with Violent Crimes may be placed on leave without pay following an investigation. If they announce and he still is playing, that would be a shock to me. Reporter and the colts telling us overnight, at this time we are very concerned and trying to find out what the relevant facts are, but we have insufficient information to venture any opinion. Mcnary, a west point grad who spent two years on active duty before joining the colts was taken into custody last night and released. Now, on the felony charges he faces, if convicted, he could face significant prison time. The nfl can take action after an investigation. You have to wonder will they act quickly before the game this weekend . Thank you. Were going to turn now to that icy weather creating dangerous conditions across the country. Its being blamed for dozens of driving accidents and firefighters called in for dramatic rescue after one teenager fell through the ice. Ginger is tracking it all. There were several rescues including brewer, the dog, the golden retriever here, rescued after an hour in the water. And, yes, were about to get into a january thaw so thats going to be our next threat, but first, almost half the country is still covered in snow. Weve got this deep freeze and the roads, look it. That deep january chill turning highways to ice from texas to virginia. In west texas, this accident fatal. A prison transportation bus hitting a patch of ice careening off an overpass and colliding with a moving Freight Train leaving ten dead and at least five others injured. Its unbelievable, the damage, the amount of damage it made. Reporter nearly 350 crashes reported in virginia, with startling scenes in North Carolina like this one. Fire truck flipping after skidding on ice. In michigan, one teen died after walking out onto the ice but in hanover, massachusetts my friend just fell through the water. Reporter a 19yearold rescued, after falling through while playing ice hockey submerged for nearly ten minutes. He was holding himself afloat with a hockey stick. He was very cold. He indicated to our people that he thought he was going to pass out. Reporter firefighters using an ice rescue sled to pull him to shore before transporting him to a local hospital. Now, to a major new initiative for families from the white house. President obama proposing new legislation that would require companies to give workers paid sick leave. The white house says some 43 million workers in the United States dont have any paid sick leave at all, so the president is calling on congress to pass a law that would require companies to give at least seven days of paid sick leave to their employees, hes also asking for 2 billion to be given to the states and cities to help them pass or start their own programs with family and medical leave and hes acting on his own making it easier for federal employees to get up to six weeks of maternity leave. The president is promising a big push on all of this beginning next week, robin, with the state of the union address. The big question, how much of a chance does this have to pass, jon . Reporter well, this will be an uphill battle, to say the least. Republicans dont like the idea of imposing expensive new regulations on companies, on employers and democrats have been trying to pass this bill since 2005. As you can imagine it wont be any easier now that republicans are in control of both the house and senate. Thanks very much. Studies have shown again and again and again that paid sick leave, not only benefits workers and their families but employers, as well, because productivity goes up and you heard jon mention about 43 million americans dont have paid sick leave. And we begin with the popes historic trip to the philippines. Pope francis arriving this morning saying hell focus on poverty during his visit. Up to 6 Million People are expected to attend his outdoor mass. And new evidence this morning of the brutality of a recent attack in nigeria carried out by the Islamic Militant group boko haram. Amnesty International Says this is an infrared satellite image of a town before the attack. You see buildings packed between those red marks. Others are trees and vegetation and then take a look at this same area after the attack. 3700 buildings in two towns were damaged or destroyed and as many as 2,000 civilians were killed. Survivors have been forced into a refugee camp. Well, the u. S. Has freed five more detainees from the prison at guantanamo bay. The men were accused of fighting for al qaeda. The release sparking protests in congress. Many of the prisoners were transferred to oman which shares a border with yemen, a hotbed of activity. Busch dropped a bombshell saying driscoll told him she was a contract killer who used guns, knives and poison to take out her victims. Overnight driscoll telling gma the only thing i am guilty of is bad taste in men. But buschs legal team gave abc news this video of driscoll starring in a reality show that never aired, which they say proves her familiarity with deadly weapons. Reporter she tells gma shes finding it very telling that instead of owning up to the assault and Domestic Violence situations, kurt finds it beneficial to attack my credibility and mislabel what i do for a living. Tommy caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson reaching the summit of el capitan in yosemite after nearly three weeks, accomplishing what many had thought to be impossible. There they are. Theyre standing by live to chat to us in just a moment, but first aditi roy has their story. Reporter this morning, an impossible dream realized. [ cheers and applause ] Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson celebrating on top of the world. [ cheers and applause ] after reaching the summit of Yosemites El Capitan capping a recordsetting free climb up the rocks vertical dawn wall. The pair using only their hands and feet with only ropes to prevent deadly falls. Its getting pretty rowdy. Reporter during their 19day, 3,000foot journey, the climbers braving a windstorm. Getting tossed around. Reporter and clinging to razor sharp edges with bloody figures. Even r r was extreme sleeping in these tents dangling precariously from the rocks edge. On day eight kevin struggling to pass one of el capitans toughest points. Thoughts crossed my mind i should just throw in the towel. Reporter but after seven more days and 11 gaspworthy falls kevin finally turning that impossible corner. [ cheers ] reporter at the summit the emotional duo greeted by friends and family. And how are your hands and feet, both of you, ooh. At least my hands are a little beat. They have a lot of bruises and cuts on them and i take a lot of ibuprofen every morning but the feet are doing well. Glad to hear it, kevin, we saw in aditis piece you had that tough time and made that turn. You thought maybe, hmm, how did you remain positive . How did you keep going . I think the word that i used is just resolve. I didnt want to accept any other outcome, but getting up that route, so i tried to push all the negative thoughts of not being able to do it out and picture getting across that traverse and thats eventually what happened. It had to be a great feeling when you made that turn and, tommy, part of the story is you didnt leave your friend behind. You know, that you were doing a little bit better. Kevin was struggling at that point and many wondered if you would go on without him but you didnt. That says a lot about your character, tommy. Thank you. I have to apologize. My voice is gone for yelling for kevin so much. It was an incredible experience. Well, if youre allowed. Youre allowed. All that youve been through those 19 days and hope you feel better soon. Well, i think what made us stick with this climb for so long, you know, tommy envisioned this thing seven years ago and i joined the Team Six Years ago is like i said, realizing that dream and seeing this through to completion, so its great that so many people are inspired by the project and hopefully they can find the equivalent of their own dawn wall and stick with it and see it through, as well. I like how you say that. Their equivalent. Not everyone will do what both of you have done but youre right, we find our own wall to scale. So whats next now that you have thats right. Some surprises in the best actress nominees, Jennifer Aniston not getting nominated for cake, and amy adams a winner at the Golden Globes not getting nominated for big eyes. I also love every single one of these best actor nominees, i feel like that is one of the most difficult to choose, Eddie Redmayne performance. Eddie redmayne and Michael Keaton, i think, will duke it out. Steve carell also amazing. I was disappointed that Jake Gyllenhaal did not get it for nightcrawler. That was excellent. That movie was gaining some momentum but just didnt i think Bradley Cooper is the guy who comes in and steals it and a lot of support for that movie, american sniper, also getting a best picture nomination but that was loaded. You had Timothy Spall for mr. Turner. But they snubbed Clint Eastwood as director for american sniper. Yet, it gets best picture.
