What officer Darren Wilson and witnesses told them what happened right before he shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown. This morning, a city and a nation on edge. Also developing right now, a massive noreaster heading for the biggest cities on the east coast. Tens of millions of people in its path right as they head home for thanksgiving. Up to a foot of snow about to affect the busiest travel time of the year. And we do say good morning, america. As you know, a very tense night after the grand jurys decision not to indict Police OfficerDarren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. George is live in st. Louis, missouri, this morning, where, thankfully, it seems like its quiet right now, george. Right now, it does appear calm, robin. But last night, chaos. The reaction was swift, it was violent. Shots were fired. Protesters set fire to buildings, looted businesses throughout ferguson. National guard marched in, tear gas was used. And look at the police cars burning after the National Guard comes in. And george, as you know, the decision resonated not just there in ferguson but all around the country. A number of protests. They were all passionate, but for the most part, they were peaceful from washington, d. C. L. A. Protesters did shut down a highway there to here in new york out in front of our times square studio. But as we said all across the country, and the vast majority of them listened to what Michael Browns family said, and no violence. And robin, look at the front page of the st. Louis post dispatch this morning. So much anger and anguish here. The st. Louis police chief said, the fabric of our community has been torn apart. You see this map, the worst violence was concentrated in the small area of ferguson. Alex perez is there now. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, george. Authorities say these were some of the worst protests they have seen since the ordeal began in august. I want to give you an idea of what many people are waking up to in ferguson here this morning. Take a look at this here. This was a strip mall building. You can see the windows completely shattered here. Over on the end there firefighters are still battling hotspots. The building still smoldering from a fire. Overnight, the streets of ferguson, missouri, descending into fiery chaos. A violent clash between police and protesters in the aftermath of the heated grand jury decision. Clearing officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of 18yearold Michael Brown. No probable cause exists to file any charge against officer wilson. [ sobbing ] reporter browns mother emotional in the streets after learning her sons killer would be a free man. Soon after the announcement, reports of gunshots outside the Ferguson Police station, followed by widespread looting, storefront windows smashed. And look what they did to the inside of this walgreens store. Law enforcement hurling tear gas and smoke bombs, trying to disperse the crowds. I cant, i cant, i cant. Lets go. Reporter from the white house, president obama calling for calm. Hurting others or destroying property is not the answer. Reporter but his words going unheard on the streets of ferguson. Cover your head. Cover your head reporter protesters chucking rocks and bottles at police cruisers. Stop throwing objects at the police immediately. Reporter and then setting them aflame. At least a dozen buildings turned to raging infernos. An entire parking lot in nearby dellwood, torched. Fire crews racing to snuff out the flames. Its 2 10 in ferguson, authorities are working to get things under control. Behind me, thats a strip mall building completely engulfed in flames. One of many structures set on fire by protesters overnight. Resulting in nearly 30 arrests and nearly a dozen people treated at hospitals. Overnight, the National Guard marching in. I dont have a lot of hesitation in telling you i didnt see a lot of peaceful protests out there tonight. Reporter and many of these firefighters and response crews working through the night. Authorities say they heard at least 150 gunshots last night. But none of those gunshots came from Police Officers. Now, at the st. Louis airport they are expecting some delays today and cancellations because of the nofly zone that was in order here. And, of course, the big issue here today will be assessing the damage as the day moves on. George . Okay, alex, thanks very much. Im joined by brittany packnet, a member of the Ferguson Commission teach for america leader here in st. Louis. You were in the middle of the protests, what did you see . Saw a lot of things. I think mostly i saw a community in profound grief. Utter anguish. A lot of people dont think justice was served or that we even have a chance for justice. I was certainly teargassed and caught in the middle of that unfortunately. I was there to stand with the community, for 109 days who has been demanding justice not just for mike brown but for all our children. You say that justice was not served. You heard from the st. Louis county prosecutor putting out all the evidence there. Saying there was no probable cause. What do you think he missed . Well, im not a legal expert. Since mike brown has passed we have had two more policeinvolved shootings in st. Louis. We have also seen an unarmed man in new york shot down. A 12yearold with a b. B. Gun shot down, tamir wright, by police. We need meaningful action moving forward. In the protests last night, who was there and who tried to take over . Sure. I would say that a lot of the folks in the family we built in the protest community and across this community were there. Unfortunately things turned. But, you know, dr. King told another news man that riots are the language of the unheard. So what we really have to be asking ourselves is what are we not listening to in this community that has been hurting for so long . Thank you so much. Want to bring in Steve Osunsami right now. We heard the prosecutor last night release all the evidence. You and your team have being going through it. What did you find . A mountain of evidence. Lots of testimony from the medical experts. For the prosecutor, this is now the process of trying to convince residents here that what happened here was truly justice. This is the first time were seeing this photo of officer Darren Wilson immediately following the moments where he shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown. Grand jurors studied these injuries from what police say was a beatdown. According to the medical report, wilson was treated for a facial injury and needed medication. In testimony unsealed this morning, were also hearing officer wilsons version of events in his own words. How he says brown pushed into his police suv and tried to grab his gun. Hands are up and hes coming at my vehicle. I was hit right here in the side of the face with a fist. The only way i can describe it, i felt like a 5yearold holding on to hulk hogan. Wilson said brown looked like a demon. Those were his words. And then his account on the deadly gunfire. I was yelling at him to stop and get on the ground. He kept running. He gets to about eight to ten feet away. Hes still coming at me in the same way. I fired more shots. And he went down right there. The prosecutor, bob mccullough, says what really made the difference here were witnesses from the scene, heard hear in this cell phone video from the day brown was killed. He stood over him and pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. Reporter he says some of them changed their stories or made them up. Some witnesses admitted they didnt actually see the shooting or only saw a part of the shooting. Were only repeating what they had heard on the street. Some adjusted the statements to fit the facts. Others stood by original statements even though their statements were completely discredited by the physical evidence. Reporter grand jurors pored over tape, radio calls from the day of the shooting. We need several more units, theres going to be a problem. Reporter the family of Michael Brown says its real easy at this point to assassinate the character of the victim, because he is dead. They also question the integrity of the process, because they say the prosecutor administers the grand jury. And its in the prosecutors best interest to keep his cops, his police safe. Thank you. To robin now speaking with the familys attorney. All right, george, thank you. Joined now from ferguson by benjamin crump, the lead attorney for the brown family. Thank you, mr. Crump, for spending a little time with us this morning. We saw the reaction that Michael Browns mother had after learning of the grand jurys decision. You were the one who delivered the news to her shortly before it became public. Can you share any more details with us . Yes, maam. We had just prayed, robin. And then we took the phone call, attorney gray called me. And she really had faith that the system would work for her child. So she was just completely devastated. She was overwhelmed with emotion and heartbroken that the system did not work equally for her child. Mr. Crump, after the grand jurys decision, officer wilsons defense team said in part Law Enforcement personnel must frequently make splitsecond and difficult decisions. Officer wilson followed his training and followed the law. What is your reaction to that statement . Nobody is ever held accountable. We have to change the system. The souls of thousands of young africanamericans cry out from the grave that we have to change this system. It is imperative that we have to make positive change here or this is going to continue to play out over and over again. When you say change the system, what exactly do you mean . Robin, Michael Browns parents really want his death to be a catalyst for change to change this system. A system where the local prosecutor, who has a symbiotic relationship with the local Police Department and the local Police Officers who kill young people of color have to sit in judgment whether to indict them or not. Well, they have no relationship and no regards for the young people of color that have been killed. And we often see the system exonerate these Police Officers over and over again. We continue to see our children being killed by the people who are supposed to protect and serve them. And theres no consequence when they are killed. Despite their immense pain, many appreciated Michael Browns family releasing a statement saying not to answer violence with violence. That that is not the answer here. And not in their sons name. There were many protests around the country. The majority of those protests were peaceful. But the same cannot be said in ferguson, as you know. Is there something additionally that the family would like to say to the protesters . His mother and father continually ask for peace. They want people not just to make noise, but to try to make a difference. They really want the Michael Brown law, this proposal for all Police Officers to have to wear video body cameras, in every city in america. And they say again, we have to be disciplined and dignified. We cant have a few bad apples destroy the message of Michael Browns call for peace. I think thats something that we all can agree upon. Mr. Crump, thank you very much. And the best to Michael Browns family. Thank you, sir. Thank you, robin. And thank you, robin. The grand jury here finished its work. No criminal charges filed against officer wilson. But there is still a federal investigation. A civil rights investigation. Lets go to Pierre Thomas with more on that. Pierre . Reporter george, the focus and the pressure now turns to the Justice Department. It will be the final word on whether criminal charges are filed against officer wilson. And i can tell you, the threshold is very high. They have to determine whether officer wilsons decision to shoot brown was unreasonable under the circumstances. And they must find evidence officer wilson intentionally violated browns civil rights, possibly because of race. Its a vigorous investigation. No guarantee how it will turn out. Were not expecting this investigation to be done for weeks. Attorney general holder has taken a personal interest in the case and has even gone to ferguson. Last night he issued a statement saying the evidence should not be prejudged and called browns death a tragedy. George . Theres a second investigation into the underlying conditions in the Ferguson Police department. Reporter yes, theyre looking into whether the Ferguson Police department discriminates against minorities. There are questions about whether the police force is diverse enough, and bias in traffic stops. The Justice Department will work with the Police Department to address these issues. If theres disagreement, they may seek a court order to force the department to change. More work to be done. Pierre thomas, thanks very much. Lets go back to robin. Thank you, george. And the grand jury met for 25 days over three months, hearing more than 70 hours of testimony. Dan abrams has been reading through the documents released overnight. He joins us now. Many people are upset. Some of the people who are upset, because it wasnt heard in front of a jury. A grand jury. Explain the difference between a regular jury and the grand jury. The first thing is, theyre not deciding guilt or innocence. Just if theres enough case to go to trial. A grand jury is much more secretive, casual. Only need 9 out of 12 to have the case move forward. Evidence that wouldnt typically be admitted in a trial can be admitted in front of a grand jury. Typically, you have a cup of detechives walk in, the prosecutor asks for a particular charge, and they get it. This was more akin to a jury. Meaning that they got all of the evidence in this particular case to evaluate. Still no crossexamination of witnesses, et cetera, but more like a typical jury trial in the amount of evidence that these grand jurors got to evaluate. But not typical in that theyre not polled. So you have no idea the count. Thats right. So a lot of people want to know. We needed 9 out of 12. How many were there . 7 to 5 . Was it 5 to 7 . We dont know. Well likely never find out because the grand jury deliberation process is intended to be so secretive. You were watching the prosecutors lengthy press conference last night. He was not in your opinion, not only defending the process, but also the facts behind it . The reason for the prosecutor to give this case to the grand jury is to say, look, they decided it, not me. I didnt just call a detective or two and ask for a particular charge. I gave them all the evidence. But in the press conference the d. A. Sure sounded like he was defending the finding of the grand jury, not just the process. And this is unusual. As you said before. No question. This process was unusual. Getting the grand jury this much evidence. All of this to then decide is very unusual. And then to make it public so people are going to be poring over it. That, too, is unusual. All right, dan, thanks very much. Now to amy with the other top developing stories. Good morning. And we begin with concerns about those exploding air bags blamed for at least five deaths and millions of car recalls. U. S. Senators have given the air bags manufacturer, takata, a deadline of december 12th to answer more questions about the faulty air bags. Including how they were made and whether there was a coverup. Lawmakers say they are not satisfied with the testimony given by a Company Executive last week. Meanwhile, honda, which was hit hard by the recall, now admits it failed to report more than 1700 claims of death or injury from other defects since 2003. Its blaming computer errors. Well, troubling news as millions of americans plan to fly home for the holiday. Close calls on airport runways are taking off. Figures show on average there is a nearcollision on an airport runway almost once a day. The number of nearmisses rose more than 60 in the last decade. Welcome to a more thoughtful another look at ferguson, missouri, this morning. Buildings still burning. Dozens of people arrested after those protests. And the grand jury deciding not to indict officer Darren Wilson. George is in ferguson, actually in st. Louis. Were going to talk to him in just a minute, as we say good morning, america, on this Tuesday Morning. Also coming up, robin, well have more on the mass i have storm thats about to hit the northeast. How it could disrupt thanksgiving travel for tens of millions of people during the busiest weekend of the year. And also ahead, a wild, highspeed chase caught on camera. Police following the suspect for hours at speeds up to 100 miles an hour. And how they finally caught him. It took four hours. People were watching for every last second. You couldnt take your eyes off it watches it. First, were going to go back to george. Relative calm after the tense night, george. Thats right, robin. As you can see, its pretty calm here right now. But coming off the worst night of rioting since the shooting back in august. As you said, the fires are still burning. 61 people arrested last night. 16 brought to local hospitals. The National Guard had to be called in. You see the police cars on fire. A lot of violence and tension last night. Looking ahead right now, Michael Browns parents expected to hold a press conference later this morning. We have heard from officer Darren Wilsons legal team, they put out a statement thanking his supporters and saying officer wilson followed his training and fold the law. Theres still a lot of anger here. Officials braced for more protest, possibly more violence. And well have more from you later. All right, george, thank you very much. Now to the Sexual Assault scandal rocking the university of virginia. Student leaders are speaking out about the culture on campus. And claims the school looked the other way as more alleged victims are coming forward. Abcs linsey davis has that story for us. Reporter this morning the socalled rape culture on the uva campus described in the infamous Rolling Stone article is giving way to a rallying cry from students. Enough passivity. Reporter and more alleged victims breaking their silence. We definitely need to reevaluate how were punish the perpetrators. Reporter in the shadow of Fraternity House where a uva junior said she was raped in 2012, we met up with alex, who told us she, too, was raped just last year and reported to it the university. We went to informal trial and ultimately he got recommendations for therapy and also to different conferences for masculinity and gender violence education. Reporter so he raped you, and that was his punishment . Yes. Reporter jackie, the subject of the Rolling Stone expose and alexs friend tells a similar story. And while she eventually reported the attack to administrators last year, the university did not ask police to open an investigation into her claims until the article was published last week. Jackie said the university presented her with several options, including an informal hearing, where the perpetrator has the opportunity to come clean. I feel like if they come forward in that setting and admit they violated the policy, that that does deserve some consideration. Reporter in an interview taped before the Rolling Stone article but before that hadnt surfaced, the dean admits even students who admitted their guilt have not been expelled. That theyre willing to say identify done something wrong and recognize that and im willing to take my licks and deal with it. Thats important to me. Reporter the university did not return our calls requesting comment. One uva grad has published a petition on change. Org calling on administrators to make expulsion the mandatory penalty for sexual violence. A Board Meeting will take place to discuss policies and procedures. Reporter but some doctors are not impressed, suggesting the patients may get better results from lasers used directly on the skin or less expensive treatments like fillers. Spread your legs a little bit wider. Shouldnt we go on a date first. Ha ha. Make a wish. I cant think of anything. Doesnt matter. Just blow them out. But doyne down inside of you. I can barely save mist and my kid. Im not asking you to. Into the motion into the night aim in a lot of pain. Do you want to get better . Say it, claire. I do. Wow. Wow. Very different Jennifer Aniston. And you can watch the full trailer exclusively on goodmorningamerica. Com on yahoo. And coming up, the cast the imitation game is with us. Dont go anywhere. Nest protect is the best smoke alarm. You can check it with your phone from anywhere. No fires. Okay, that one was unnecessary since im in my home and i know i wouldve gotten a message if there was a problem. But you can never be too safe. Still no fires. And no Carbon Monoxide leaks. Glad i checked. Am i obsessed. No, but i am safety conscious. And im going to check one last time because maybe theres a fire happening and i cant smell it. And there isnt. Nest protect. Welcome to a more thoughtful home. Yeah, enough for two. Gosh. Try four, buddy. Hmm, ill take a dark roast. Chai tea, please. Honey, text the man what you want. French vanilla, make it strong the all new keurig 2. 0 is here. Brew for one, brew for all. Our Parent Company, disney, and committed to helping create healthier generations and giving 1 million to feeding america to support food banks nationwide that provide nutritious foods to kids afterschool. And now the imitation game, the movie telling the story about the cracking of the german enigma code in world war ii. The cast joins us in a moment. Its a bright mathematician who has trouble fitting in with his peers. Take a look. I have asked if you want to come to lunch with us. No, you didnt, you said you were going to get some lunch. Have i offended you in some way . Why would you think that . Would you like to come to lunch with us . What time is lunch with us. Alan, its a bleeding sandwich. What is . Lunch. I dont like sandwiches. Never mind. Brilliantly played by all of you. And benedict, as you were playing alan, did you have something you wanted audiences to take away . A lot. He was somebody we cared about getting the legacy right. Hes somebody who deserves a far bigger place in our culture and our history than hes been afforded as both an extraordinary scientific mind and philosopher. The man behind modern computing science. And keira, you play joan, the lone woman in the sea of men, much like your castmates. I cant imagine what that was like behind the scenes. I cant imagine what it was like either. Must have been really odd. And the relationship between joan and allen was beautiful. Did you do a lot of Historic Research on who joan was . She was an incredible woman. The fact there was a woman at the center of breaking the enigma code in the 1940s is extraordinary itself. You have called this a movie about outsiders, and the importance of being different. What did you hope to achieve with this film . This is a movie that celebrates those who are different. Not burdened down by normality. This is the forefather of the computer. Who, you know, shortened a war and saved millions of lives. Charles, i know that you play the tough commander in the imitation game, and a star of one my favorite tv shows, might have heard of it, game of thrones. So i just have to ask, last season, we thought you were done. But then i heard somewhere we might see Tyrion Lannister again if season five. Is that true . Yeah, i wake up in the shower having a terribly bad dream. Might is the operative word. More than that i cannot say. And matthew, i know that you and alan, for all of the Downton Abbey fans out there, you are both in the next season. We here in the states have not seen it yet. I dont really like working without him now. Its in the contracts. Its known as the matthew good clause in my contract. Has to be there at least five days of filming a year. Sucks to be you. And then i know, matthew, you play the youngest member of the group. Yes. What was it like for you filming . Well, it was easy to relate to a young guy whos just at university and just learning his field. So as a young, inexperienced actor, it was quite easy to relate to. We have one social media question. Someone heather, actually, on instagram, wants to know, is it ever intimidating taking on a movie based on real events . Its difficult when youre making a film about something because you have to judge the documentary element. And the fiction element. You want to do it justice. But drama demands something often a little more interesting than real life. So that bans balance is the issue. It was a fantastic film. Everyone should see it. The imitation game opens in theaters this friday. And coming up, alton browns best timesaving tips for your thanksgiving dinner. Tricks for an amazing meal with less stress. Youre such a new yorker, its a torch. Take a torch from a hardware store. And in about 30 seconds, you get nice, brown, crispy onions. Wow, look at that. What mans not sexy carrying one of these . I have crispy coming out of my ears, ladies. Thats a tip for that. What says thanksgiving more than having a blow torch like that . Nothing. Nothing. A float of a blowtorch. I dont know. Stuffing is a must. Stuffing is a big issue when youre trying or dressing. Only stuffing inside the bird. Outside the bird, its dressing. Just saying. Heres the thing, instead of making it in a big vessel. Like say that you wanted to make this at somebody elses house. Make it in muffin tins. Stick them in a bag. Transport them, in the pan, 350 oven for ten minutes. And theyre hot again. Somebodys been picking at this. Look, theres like see no evil, hear no evil taste no evil. Can we taste this . Its hard when youre transporting the turkey. Heres the deal. About transporting the turkey. Watch this. If you have the turkey done, and have to go to grandmothers house, take them, do this. Ive got a box. A card board box, all right. Cardboard box, put it on the floor. Packing chips. These are just cellulose packing chips. These are from fedex or some other shipper. Not an endorsement. Make the turkey in a roasting pan and a bath towel. Pick it up, you got that . Got it. Drop it on the packing chips. Put the towel over it. Either more packing chips or even bubble wrap on top of that. Close up the box and you have a special delivery for grandmoms house. Thats all you have to do. Believe it or not. That will stay hot for about three hours. Like that. You should take this act on the road. And on you are, actually, arent you . Dance, we need the dancing part. There you go. Now its a show.
