Two hurricanes, one in each ocean fueling the now deadly waves. The lifeguard jumped off the pier to rescue him. What a tragedy. We just sat here and watched the guy not react. Reporter here you can see lifeguards trying to bring this surfer in near malibu. He was under nearly five minutes. It was too late. Hurricane marie propelling the dangerous swells spinning off the coast of mexico, max sustained winds of 85 Miles Per Hour. A high surf advisory, waves climbing to 15 feet. Took about eight guys to pull me out. Reporter even out of the water. The water came in here the last flood. Reporter people arent taking chances sandbagging as bulldozers build berms. Back east in the atlantic, hurricane cristobal more than 400 miles west of bermuda moving north. Winds up to 80 Miles Per Hour. Instigating waves up to six feet. The risk of rip currents from northern florida to maine. So cristobal should move north and west of bermuda. Closest itll be to our coast is 300 miles but still look for some potentially damaging rip currents along the atlantic coast. Thats through the end of the week. And the same time period further away the swells building. We could see waves still reaching 15 plus feet. George, this is something to watch in the coming days in Southern California. President obama laying the groundwork for dramatic expansion of air strikes as we learn new details about an american killed fighting. For the terrorist group. Official tells abc news that general lloyd austin who heads Central Command is now in iraq for a series of meetings on what to do next. It is austin who is overseeing the air strikes in iraq and he would be the general in charge if the decision is made to expand those air strikes into syria. This morning, the pentagon is preparing options for strikes and the president has ordered u. S. Surveillance planes to start gathering intelligence and look for potential targets. Another critical decision this morning is whether to send in warplanes and humanitarian aid to help more than 10,000 iraqis in another town in Northern Iraq now under siege by isis. We are told the president is nearing a decision on that. Martha, the potential for air strikes in syria, syria making it clear they would consider that a breach of their sovereignty so how dangerous would these flights be . Reporter syria has robust air defenses and u. S. Warplanes would take all precautions. Since theyre going after isis, which is the enemy of the assad regime as well, it is doubtful u. S. Believe the suspect acted alone randomly shooting people on streets and freeways and right now hes behind bars. This morning, Los Angeles Police calling 34yearold Alexander Hernandez a ruthless serial killer responsible for killing four and seriously injuring three more in a shooting spree that spanned several days and multiple crime scenes. Nothing makes a homicide investigators heart beat faster than realizing he has a serial killer. Thats what this man was. Reporter the attacks began last thursday when police say he opened fire on 48yearold Gildardo Morales while he sat in his truck on his way to work. Then on sunday, he ambushed a family of five on their way to church. 23yearold Mariana Franco was killed. Her parents are still hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Two gunshots. Boom, boom. Reporter investigators say the rampage ended with two more victims shot and killed before hernandez was taken into custody sunday evening after a standoff with police. Pistol grip shotgun was taken into custody at the time he was taken into custody on his person. Reporter hernandez is charged with capital murder and attempted murder and is expected to be arraigned this afternoon. And it turns out hernandez was initially arrested and charged with animal cruelty after police say he shot three dogs. Also breaking right now, police in philadelphia investigating reports that three men were abducted and robbed and then thrown into a river. Two of the victims bodies have been found. Uncle jumps into pool to save his nephew from drowning. Thats what usc cornerback josh shaw says caused him to sprain both ankles but now new speculation he made it all up. And josh shaw with a tremendous play. Reporter new questions emerging this morning surrounding usc cornerback josh shaw. The 22yearold Football Player noticeably absent from practice tuesday after telling the school he rescued his 7yearold nephew from drowning on saturday. Weve gotten a few phone calls, contradicting what josh said occurred saturday night so were going to continue to vet it. Reporter its unclear who made those calls or what part of his story is being challenged. He says he suffered sprains in both ankles after jumping from the second story of an apartment complex in palmdale, california, to save his nephew carter who he says doesnt know how to swim. Josh is adamant with what occurred. Reporter the fifth year senior says he landed on concrete before crawling into the pool steering his nephew to dry land before grabbing a ladder and lifting himself out of the water using just his arms. The xrays and mris we have taken on him have come back negative so so far we dont see anything structurally wrong with him but he is very sore. Reporter in an interview with abc news his sister said she didnt witness the incident but was quick to defend her brother. My child is safe and its because of josh. I hope he has a speedy recovery. Reporter shaw now sidelined from the game indefinitely, too injured to play, is being treated on campus. But says he would do it again for any child, not just his nephew. Josh shaw has been a good leader for us. Hes given me no reason not to believe what he has told us that occurred. Reporter the very same night of shaws alleged heroic rescue, he was voted a team captain. He was expected to be a major player in the trojans upcoming season. Shaw says his nephew is a bit traumatized but physically okay. Usc opens its season saturday against fresno without shaw in the lineup. So the fallout potentially is a usc fallout meaning if he lied to the team and to the coach, the team, the coach, usc can take action. Lose his scholarship, perhaps. Whatever the case may be. That is very different from a criminal type investigation. Any legal implications based on what was revealed. He would have had to lie to the police in some way, shape or form. And even then there would be questions as to what the crime would be. But thats you need that at the very least to ask that question and we dont know that that happened at all here. The victims, two sisters, both with children, one of them able to call 911 and accuse her brotherinlaw and exsheriffs deputy suffering from lou gehrigs disease, als, before she died. Mara schiavocampo has the latest. Good morning, mara. Reporter police know that suspect well. Thats because he used to be one of their colleagues. Now theyre trying to piece together not only what happened exactly but why. Andrew steele was a veteran sheriffs deputy. His wife ashlee described as the love of his life, but this morning officials are calling Andrew Steele a murderer saying he shot and killed his wife and sisterinlaw friday at their suburban home near madison, wisconsin. These events have shaken each and every one of us. Reporter police say the strongest evidence they have against steele, a dying declaration from one of his victims. According to a newly released police affidavit, 38yearold Kacee Tollefsbol called 911 friday and reported that her brotherinlaw, andy steele, had shot her in the back. When Police Arrived, they say they found her still alive and when asked who shot her, she replied, my brotherinlaw. Tollefsbol later died at the hospital. Police say at the home they also found ashlee steele, fatally shot and later discovered Andrew Steele in the laundry room with a handgun laying on the counter. Andy was an absolutely amazing loving husband. Never any indication of a problem. Reporter steele was arrested friday but has not yet been charged and is now being held at the county jail. The 16year deputy retired in june after being diagnosed with als also known as lou gehrigs disease. Ashlee was his main advocate. Reporter ashlee raised 75,000 for andrews medical care and posted numerous als ice bucket challenge videos on facebook. The couple have two small children. Tollefsbol was also a mom and a newlywed. Seemed so happy right now with their life. Reporter a life that went tragically off course. Police say there was no history of Domestic Violence between the couple. Their children, thankfully, were not home at the time of the shooting and are now safe with relatives. George . Thanks. Dan abrams is back. Boy, such a sad story and first of all lets talk about this testimony, the 911 call, could be a key piece of evidence but usually testimony isnt allowed if the witness cant be crossexamined. Hearsay evidence means a statement made out of court as this was where you dont have an opportunity to crossexamine the person who made the statement. In this case that would seem to apply except theres an exception to the hearsay rule called a dying declaration. Which it sounds like this is a classic example of. Which is not only does she call 911 and make the statement when the Police Arrive she also makes another statement implicating him so i dont think theres any question if this were to go to trial that would be admitted as an exception to the hearsay rule. How about the shooter learned he was suffering from als. How does that play into the case . It could cut either way. On the one hand, it could show a potential motive, that he had become despondent and given up on life, et cetera. On the other hand he could use it to his advantage to engender sympathy although i dont know that would be effective. Could he claim some kind of mental incapacity. You cant say not guilty by reason of als. You would have to say not guilty by reason of insanity and not understanding the difference between right and wrong. Thats not suffering from als but in the context of sentencing for example it could help meaning if there was a conviction and then there was a sentencing hearing and there was testimony as to how much he was suffering during this period, that could have an impact on a judge but not as to guilt or innocence. We are going to start with a french braid starting from the bottom working your way up then you grab all the hair, make three braids and bobby pin it. So, sophie, if were going to do this, is there anything like somebody who has no braiding experience because we do have a lot of little girls watching, a lot of moms who want to try this stuff. Any tips on Getting Started . Really just check out tutorials, thats the key. This is one of the easiest braids i think to do, a fishtail after a simple braid. A fishtail is the goto braid. You can make it the night before and then all the flavors dig in there. And stew the vegetables will taste really good and add lemon juice and a little bit of fresh herbs and just stew just tastes and smells amazing. Im going to stuff it in my peta.
