I wanted to start because it is a serious one. Stationary front has set up over the northern plains, parts of the great lakes and thats where you see training thunderstorms. We call them. They ride along there, rain after rain after rain, minneapolis, theyve had in 24 hours what you would get in 6 weeks of rain but this is also happening in texas and thats where the stunning pictures begin this morning. Rain falling at 3 inches per hour in texas whipped by nearly 70mileperhour winds. Floods inducing mudslides in minnesota. 100yard chunk of hill giving way at the university of Minnesota Medical Center before crashing into the Mississippi River forcing evacuations and prompting roads to close. Just a big mudslide coming down. Reporter minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes. This morning, its got a few more. Are you going to get home . I need to swim there. I lost everything. It came through there like niagara falls. Reporter a state of emergency in 35 counties after 4 inches of rain fell just in minneapolis on thursday. The most ever recorded on a single day in june. And now reports that 1,000 homes have been damaged by flooding south of minneapolis. When is the rain going to end . Reporter this road outside minneapolis becoming an impassable waterfall. Floods swallowing parts of south dakota too. Crews there working frantically overnight building a levee across this highway, interstate 29, the Big Sioux River expected to crest as early as this morning. I wish i could say its over but its not. More rain this weekend. This is not what has fallen but what will fall by sunday. 2 to 3 inches in that red zone. Were really concerned about some of the rivers in iowa. So ill be talking about this, plus a cooldown in the northeast coming up. Okay, ginger, welcome back. Were going turn now to the shocking details of an anthrax accident at the cdc. About 75 workers there could have been exposed to the biological weapon that is so often deadly and abcs linzie janis is at the cdc headquarters in atlanta. Good morning. Reporter good morning, george. A very serious and dangerous mistake was made here at the cdc in a Bioterrorism Lab and as a result, dozens of staffers may have been exposed to the deadly bacteria. This morning, approximately 75 employees at the centers for Disease Control are being offered treatment after possibly being exposed to live anthrax. The cdc where scientists study the deadliest germs and diseases in the world closing and decontaminating labs after a breach in Lab Procedures between june 6th and 13th might have led to leaking improperly deactivated samples of anthrax into the air. The cdc also saying that improper deactivation procedures were performed before the strain was shared between their labs leading some workers to wear less protective gear than recommended when handling anthrax telling abc news, we are devastated. It is unacceptable. We are going to find out what went wrong, and we are going to fix it. According to the cdc, if anthrax is inhaled and left untreated, about 85 of cases result in fatalities. Even with treatment, the fatality rate can be as high as 45 . Its very disconcerting because its one of the most secure biological facilities in the world. Reporter this morning, the 75 employees are being offered treatment with antibiotics. The cdc says no one is showing any signs of illness, but notes that symptoms could take up to two months to appear. The workers are also being offered an anthrax vaccine. Now, the cdc is investigating this safety breach and says the scientists responsible could face disciplinary action. Amy. All right, thank you. Lets bring in chief health and medical editor dr. Richard besser who is also the former acting director of the cdc. You began your career there. You know the ins and outs. How did this happen . Yeah, so this took place in the front line lab at cdc for detecting a bioterrorism event and they get powder samples from around the country and they were trying to come up with a new method of killing the samples without wearing protective gear. Unfortunately, the new method for killing the anthrax didnt work and people received samples that had live anthrax in them. So for these 75 staffers what are the short and longterm effects here . What are the concerns and what are the treatments . Theyll be looking for signs of anthrax which initially could just look like the flu, aches, fever, headaches, that kind of thing. But, you know, i expect theyll take these antibiotics because if you wait until you develop symptoms, as many as 40 of people are going to die from that infection. Serious. Any Health Concerns for the public at large especially people near the cdc . Thankfully, no. It doesnt spread person to person. You can occasionally get the skin form from contaminated clothing but all the outer clothing was left in the labs. An investigation is under way to make sure this doesnt happen again. Exactly. I think theyll bring in outside people to take a look, as well. Dr. Richard besser, thanks. Were going to turn now to the crisis in iraq and president obamas decision to send up to 300 military advisers to help the iraqi army battle islamic militants. Targeted air strikes listen 0 targeted air strikes are also on the table. But the president wants to see major changes from the government in baghdad first. Abcs Martha Raddatz is tracking all the latest from there. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, george. Lets talk about those additional 300 u. S. Troops. They will be green berets, they will be not only in baghdad, but in the volatile north of this country. They will advise and train Iraqi Security forces. The president says they will not see combat but this is still a very Dangerous Mission and about the air strikes i think the only way you will see air strikes is if americans are threatened, if the embassy is threatened, if baghdad is threatened, george. Meantime, martha, youve got a very dangerous standoff going on at that oil refinery. Out of baghdad. So important to the whole country. Reporter indeed, george, in fact, i was at that very oil refinery in 2009 Walking Around with general ray odierno. Right now in baiji, at that oil refinery, you have Iraqi Security forces, about 275 of them, surrounded, completely surrounded by isis militants. They arent attacking the refinery right now. What they are doing is starving out those Iraqi Security forces, they are virtually holding them hostage but the iraqis do believe this oil refinery has fallen. That is what they have told american officials, but not what theyre telling the public. Okay, martha, thanks. Well have full coverage of the crisis on sunday on this week. Now, lets get the rest of the top stories from ryan smith. We begin with terrifying moments for thousands of people leaving an outdoor concert near denver. Gunfire erupted at a parking lot in the red rock amphitheater where school boy q was among the performers. At least three people were shot, forcing police to lock down the facility. The gunman still remains on the loose. No official word on the victims conditions. Also in colorado a massive explosion leveling this home north of denver. The blast was heard for miles and sent debris flying more than a block away. One man is presumed dead. No word yet on what caused the explosion. The v. A. Hospital scandal is even worse than we first thought. A new audit has found that one in ten veterans, more than 341,000 people, have been forced to wait more than a month to see a doctor. Thats twice as many as previously reported. And president obama is calling on mexicos president to stop the flood of child immigrants crossing the u. S. Border. In a phone call thursday the president welcomed mexicos help in targeting criminals who lure children from central america. White house critics blame u. S. Immigration policies for the crisis and today Vice President biden visits guatemala to make it clear that the children will not be immune from deportation. A former pizza deliveryman has been convicted of murdering four more women in los angeles. Chester turner was already on death row for killing ten women when dna linked him to the additional crimes. Reporter this morning, Officials Say a monthlong Florida Lottery investigation is hitting pay dirt. Authorities poised to make additional arrests after hauling in four suspects over the past two days, some charged with grand theft. Its the result of a sweeping investigation into the oddsdefying winnings of nearly 100 Convenience Store owners and clerks in the state. Investigators becoming suspicious after learning that out of the top ten lotto winners in the tampa area nine are Convenience Store owners. And this man, a different store clerk. Youve won 38 times for about 50,000. In four years maybe. Reporter how much money have you put into it, do you think. Maybe 60 or 70. Reporter there are many alleged schemes. This clerk in syracuse, new york, was convicted last year of swindling a customer after telling him he had a 5,000 ticket when it was really worth 5 million. Well, we got our one winner. Well, look, when you look at that wing against ghana, it was a wonderful moment, an historic moment in the way they did it. It was incredible theater and drama and i think specifically for that moment that was the way it needed to be played. I think against portugal theyll have much more possession. I think a player like Michael Bradley who didnt have his greatest game has to play better and i think ultimately if they have that type of possession i was much more worried about the game against ghana than the game against portugal. Two of the suspects in court today after charges were dropped against a third person and were learning more about the evidence in the case. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has that story. Reporter this morning, newly released documents paint a more complete picture in the mysterious case of 57yearold nancy pfister, the wellknown aspen philanthropist found dead in february inside her mountain chalet allegedly murdered by her former tenant william styler, his wife, also named nancy, cleared on similar charges tuesday. The prosecutor telling the aspen daily news that the case against styler is getting stronger. According to court documents, blood stains were found in nine places on his 2002 jaguar including the trunk. One motion revealing officers found a trash bag containing the murder weapon in close proximity to the couples hotel. The documents previously sealed released after a heated courtroom battle over leaked evidence. The defense accusing prosecutors and sheriffs of potentially tainting the jury pool by revealing that after pfister was fatally beaten her body was rolled up in a carpet and stuffed into a closet. Pfisters daughter cant make sense of it. I just want to tape a picture of moms face on their door and make them look at it. Reporter just days after the stylers arrest in march investigators arrested this woman, katherine carpenter accusing her of being a coconspirator in the murder. Carpenter had arranged for the stylers to rent pfisters home until pfister complained on her Facebook Page that her tenants werent taking care of the home and werent paying rent. How could someone just be so angry that they got kicked out of a house or theres got to be something more so its hard to understand that. Reporter this morning, as carpenter and styler head back to court many are wondering where the case is headed. For good morning america, Neal Karlinsky, abc news, seattle. A lot of questions still on that case. There sure are. Were going to turn now to the search for that missing california firefighter who left his campsite a week ago chasing after his dog but never came back. Theyre using drones to look for him and they may have discovered an important clue. Abcs david wright has the story. Reporter its one week to the day since mike herdman vanished in this vast wilderness area. Now rescuers are turning to a hightech tool to help the search. Drones armed with infrared camera, the handlaunched puma theyre a force multiplier. Instead of 30 guys in the field looking, we can launch this aircraft and cover a lot of ground. Reporter his friend told authorities he last saw him friday chasing after his dog wearing only a tshirt and shorts. Get you out safely. Reporter search crews from half a dozen agencies including this Homeland Security Rapid Response team have been scouring the back country. A wilderness area twice the size of the grand canyon. Every footprint is a clue. Every broken branch. Thats what were looking for. Reporter on wednesday and again thursday they spotted the dog duke but duke got away. Reporter summer camp, outdoor games, stories by the campfire and this we are on a vacation from talking about peoples physical appearance, negative or positive. Reporter new yorks eden village is a farming camp that tries to plant new ways of thinking among their campers establishing what they call a no body talk rule. As reported in a New York Times feature no one including the staff can comment on anyone elses physical appearance. Even with compliments. So what does that mean . Campers are told not to say things like, hey, i like your dress. [ buzzer ] reporter but instead give compliments like im really inspired by you. [ bell rings ] the no body talk rule is part of the larger culture at eden village thats not a retreat from the real world but its a Training Ground for stepping more powerfully back out into the real world. Reporter 14yearold Rachel Steinig has been spending her summers at eden village for the last three years and says the no body talk rule teaches her to focus more on who she is as a person than on her outer beauty. Its time to try to get to know people deeper for who they really are and thats just the nice thing to do for yourself because itll give you more selfesteem to talk about deeper things. Reporter but not everyone thinks a flattery fast is a good thing. Critics point out not talking about certain issues doesnt teach kids how to process them or deal with what theyre feeling. My kids go to camp and camp and summer can be a great hiatus from the norm and the norm is that so many of our kids are getting messages that tell them that they are going to be judged by how they look and they should judge others by how they look. So i think a rule that says no negative body talk would be great but the rule that we have right here dont talk about it at all. Has to be a little more nuanced. Girl, this is what we do. We say, i love your hair or what a cute outfit and its our way of connecting with one another. Is there anything negative about saying you cant even give each other compliments . I think the negative part is that we need kids to understand how to talk about their bodies, ask questions about their bodies, to express concerns about their bodies. But compliments are bad compliments about appearance can then stay focused on appearance. So we want our kids to get away from the fat talk, the negative talk but we want them to be able to embrace positive talk. Wont kids find a way to talk in code that we cant understand. Look, i mean, that is a positive i like your outfit but where we go wrong is to constantly compare ourselves and say, oh, look at her leg, i wish my legs were long like that. You know, this book that youre writing, you wrote all of this in the middle of a lot that was going on, you had an eightyear marriage that actually just officially ended this week . Right. You write about what was that process writing about very deeply permanent things. It was a very vulnerable thing to do. I didnt start out trying to write anything about specifically my life. It was supposed to be a book about the tour, the year i went on tour and as i started talking about putting the show together i realized how tied into my music and art, how it ties into what is going on and as i talked about it it turned into a different kind of book but its called scared of it but im proud of it at the same time too. I would have wanted somebody to tell me some of the things i learned at this point when i was growing up. And let me is there anything you said i cant put that in there . Did you just put it all out . Im pretty honest. I think, you know, in show business youre always putting your best food forward. Youre there to entertain. They dont want 0 know whats going on behind the scenes. Oh, they want to know. Its not what its about. When i come out here i want to make them sing, i want to make them smile and dance and happy. Thats my job. I think youre doing it. I want to make them jump. You know what, you made all of us get a little weepy and very nostalgic about first love. Because you connected two people. Oh, yes.
