First, that terrifying nearmiss in the sky. Two passenger planes coming within 400 feet of each other while taking off in houston at one of the busiest airports in the country. And the second one were learning this morning happened in houston when a controller who was training told a jetliner to turn the wrong way. It was an evening takeoff for the two united jets. 601, thank you. Turn right. Right turn. Heading 340. 140. Reporter the two air bus 320s rolling down separate runways at about the same time. But then, the controller at houstons bush international, tells the jet heading east, heading to vancouver, to turn right when it was supposed to turn left. That meant the jet, which can carry 120 people, was heading right for that other plane, taking off for mexico city. The planes get within 4,200 feet from 50e67 other, 8 10ths of a mile. Seconds from impact, before that same air Traffic Controller realizes the mistake. Listen to him as he tries to avoid disaster. United 601, stop your turn. Stop your climb and stop your turn, united 601. Reporter incredibly, the jetliners are unaware how close they had come to the disaster. One crew asking other pilots in the air if they knew what happened. You basically crossed directly over the top of each other. It was pretty gnarly looking. Reporter this happened two weeks ago. And that was just 2 1 2 weeks after another united flight came within 50 yards of an express jet at newark airport. Yeah. Were putting down the nose. Hes real close. We cant say that two is a trend, it is definitely concerning. And the principal question, do we have a systemic problem of some sort . Reporter on the two aircraft, one was carrying 100 people, the other, 125. The controller who realized the mistake and corrected it, still on the job. Hail, tornadoes, damaging winds. And abcs reena ninan is in albany, new york, this morning, where there was a reported tornado. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. This is an example of how minutes can make a difference with a tornado warning. Hitting so quickly all that remains is just part of the wall here. The grandmother who owns this home, picking up her grandson at the time. And now, even the dogs inside made it out alive. Across the northeast, a flareup of wild weather. Hail in new york and pennsylvania. And suspected tornadoes in upstate new york, delaware and virginia. Crazy. I didnt think anything could happen like this here. Reporter this morning, the unbelievable aftermath. The lady was out there saying help her, help her, because her husband was in there and he couldnt get out. Reporter a look above at hartley, delaware, shows four homes and a barn completely destroyed after reports of a twister. And just west of albany, new york, a possible tornado. Hid behind the wall until it was over. Reporter and winds so powerful, this semi truck toppled over. This man desperately trying to salvage belongings, ravaged by mother nature. In virginia, nearly 20,000 people without power. It was terrible. Like, really scary. All hell just broke loose. Reporter in pennsylvania, golf ballsized hail, rocketing through skylights at the berkshire mall. Sending shards of glass everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt. The hail leaving pennsylvania looking like siberia. Okay. Weve got a cracked windshield. It looks like were going to declare an emergency. Reporter and a crack in the windshield of this u. S. Airway flight, which landed safely after passing through a storm into Philadelphia International airport. Trouble out west, too. Take a look at this funnel cloud, jawdroppingly close to a flight leaving denver. The National Weather service will be here this afternoon, looking at the debris to determine if this was a tornado. Residents say if they confirm it, it will be the second one in two years. David. What a relief that grandmother was picking up her grandson. Thanks to you. Today, it sinks south. If you are in wilmington, north carolina, columbia, south carolina, anywhere in orange there. This afternoon and evening, you have to look out. This morning, 36. 1 million americans, the secondhighest number in 14 years, are packing up their suitcases, ready to put a record cold winter in their rear view. And according to aaa, almost nine out of ten are hitting the road this weekend, driving to a destination at least 50 miles away. It was such a cold winter for some people, that people are just ready to travel. Reporter gas prices are helping fuel this years first big getaway. Mostly holding where they were a year ago. And in many states, slightly lower than last years average of 3. 63 a gallon. Airplanes will be more crowded this Holiday Weekend. 200,000 more fliers than last year. And the 2. 6 million americans taking to the skies are paying an average of 6 more than last year for their tickets. A lot of people put travel on the back burner. As they feel better about the economy, they are more willing to spend money on luxuries like traveling. Reporter this years most popular destinations according to priceline, las vegas, san diego and orlando. No coincidence theyre all sunny spots. A lot of people not taking any chances with those destinations. They want guaranteed sunshine. One thing to note, if you are hitting the road this weekend, memorial day is the seconddeadliest after the fourth of july weekend on the roads. Yesterday, more than a dozen ukrainian troops were killed at a checkpoint. Prorussian militants claiming credit for that attack. And u. S. Intelligence tracking Russian Troops on the border. And look at these scenes across the southwest. Mass i have dust storms engulfing parts of nevada and new mexico. Entire neighborhoods shrouded with near zero visibility. At least six people were killed in a pileup crash on interstate 10. Just in time for the Holiday Weekend, barbecue. A National Beef recall is expanding. Take a look. 14 states are affected. A man saw a baby dangling from a second floor window in china. He took position and was in just the right place look at that to make the catch. The 1yearold had crawled out the window on to a ledge during a thunderstorm. But thankfully that child is okay and uninjured. And finally, a little girl in montana. She was devastated this week when her pet bird named foresta, flew away from home and disappeared. The 5yearold was just about to give up hope until this happened the next day. Take a look. Foresta landed on this guys head. But that guy is actually her teacher at her Elementary School five miles away. The family says the pigeon never left the home. Its a mystery how it found her school. The principal said, the bird was skybombing the kids, trying to find tara. Maybe he smelled her . But pigeons are smart. Amazing story. Theyre back at home. Reunited. Teachers pet. Just when the nba thought it moved past the issue of race, with Donald Sterling facing possible expulsion, mark cuban brings it back into the spotlight. Billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner, mark cuban, ever outspoken, now wading into the controversial waters of bigotry. I know im prejudice. And i know im bigoted in a lot of different ways. Reporter speaking his mind to an audience at an ink magazine conference on tuesday, cuban not holding back on discussing his own biases. If i see a black kid in a hoodie and its late at night, im walking to the other side of the street. If on that side of the street theres a guy that has tattoos all over his face, white guy, bald head, tattoos everywhere, im walking back to the other side of the street. Reporter these comments coming at a delicate time for the nba, still reeling from the racist rant by Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, his words creating a debate. I dont think mark cuban is racest. When you meet a real racist, you know it. To be the owner of a team. And you have africanamericans on your squad, to Say Something like this, shame on you. Thats pure ignorance. What i dont like, when people say i dont see color. Stop lying. You see color. You may not react in a negative way to it. Stop saying i dont see color. Reporter later, cuban clarifying his comments. Treating anybody differently for race, religion or any other reason is wrong. But that doesnt mean youre not going to have those thoughts from time to time, right . We all succumb to those thoughts. And you have to realize that when you have those thoughts, theyre wrong. Mark cuban apologized to Trayvon Martins family for using the boy in the hoodie example. Saying that, quote, in hindsight, i should have used different examples. I didnt consider the Trayvon Martin family. And no comment so far from the nba. But a lot of people objecting to the timing of the comments. You know, i hesitate because anytime you bring up race, if youre black or white, youre playing the race card. You can have a discussion about it. And youre not a racist for bringing up the topic. But its very sensitive. Thats what they were saying, just being honest. Trying to have an honest moment. And thats how you have a dialogue without being labelled. Yeah, its difficult. Thanks. A virus landed the former beatle in a tokyo hospital, forcing him to cancel some concerts. And dan harris with the latest. Reporter this morning, sir Paul Mccartney is recovering after a mystery bug landed him in a hospital in tokyo. Perhaps the greatest living rock legend who turned 72 next month, appeared to be in fine fetal last thursday when he arrived for the japanese leg of his out there tour. But the next day, he was forced to cancel his first show. Tweeting, i came down with a virus. And following a visit from doctors, ive been told not to perform. I am very sorry to all my fans, as i was greatly looking forward to the concert. Mccartney wanted to perform against Doctors Orders but wasnt allowed to. And when his condition did not improve, the rest of his japan dates and one in south korea, his first show in that country ever, were all canceled. Its important to him not to let the fans down. And it would have to take something serious for him to cancel the show. He wants to be there for the people who want to see him. Yesterday reporter mccartney, one of two surviving members of the beelts beatles, has shown no signs of slowing down in his 70s. Whether its cracking wise with jimmy fallon. First, more on the desperate search for a cincinnati College Student who vanished almost without a trace almost a week ago now. Police say theyve never seen anything like this. But they hope that new Surveillance Video of him just before he went missing will hold clues. Mara schiavocampo has the video right now. Reporter the Surveillance Video shows a man walking down the street, appearing to be looking for something. Its not much, but Cincinnati Police say its all theyve got in the search for this College Student. We exhausted most of the leads we can find. The student vanished after reportedly leaving his apartment to go look for his cell phone. Police say he headed out around 3 00 a. M. , leaving his keys, wallet and jacket behind. They believe this video shows dulle, retracing his steps. Hes using a flash fliglight to to find the phone. Dulle hasnt been seen since. And officials dont have any idea of what happened to him. Its unusual we dont get a phone call. Somebody saw something. Reporter now, a massive search is under way. Hundreds have spent the last few days passing out flyers, looking in homeless shelters and canvassing the woods. Online, more than 14,000 have joined the help find brogan dulle page. Posting videos and photos of dulle in happier times. Fa and more than 13,000 has been raised to help fund search efforts. We just want to talk to you, man. We just hope youre all right. Now, to the mountain climbers terrifying fall, caught on camera, plunging 70 feet into a deep, icy hole. Somehow managing to climb out, despite some serious injuries. Abcs john muller has this incredible survival story. Im in a hole. Thankfully i didnt keep falling that way. Reporter hes a man literally in the depths of despair. Geology Professor John all capturing his time plummeting in the ice, after climbing seven stories in the himalayas. I got up here, instead, my ledge. My arm, i cant use. Reporter hiking alone on a relatively flat snowfield, all had just fallen 70 feet into a crevasse, landing on a ledge. The blue sky high above. No easy way out, with a broken arm, ribs and other injuries. All said he was convinced he was going to die. I was getting hypothermic of five minutes of being there. And the only thing that was going to keep me alive, was constantly moving and finding my way out before it got dark. Reporter life or death decisions captured on camera. Im going to somehow climb out that way. I cant go that way at all. Reporter it took all six hours to climb out. Slowly moving sideways and up. Sideways and up until he found enough hard snow into which he could dig his ax and pull himself out of that hole. It took another day for help to arrive in the form of a helicopter. But on september 8th, 2012, a freak accident during a game against tulsa cut devons football career short. That does not look good. This past saturday, he graduated from Tulane University with a degree in cell and molecular biology. And that same day, devon signed a contract with the new orleans saints. We have serious news to talk about. Breaking overnight, another nearcollision between two passenger jets. This time it happened in houston. Two United Airlines flights taking off earlier this month. They came dangerously close to one another. Within 400 feet vertically, because an air Traffic Controller told one plane to turn right on the runway instead of left. Thankfully, the controller realized the mistake just in time. That controller remains on the job. And the other big story right now. More than 800 firefighters struggling to battle this wildfire, blazing through arizona. Its spread across 11square miles and a popular Recreation Area between flagstaff and sedona. Thousands of people are ready to evacuate. Heavy winds kicked up these dust storms in nevada and new mexico. Engulfed entire neighborhoods. Six people were killed in a highway pileup because of low visibility. And in the east, people from upstate new york to virginia are cleaning up after several reported tornados and severe storms. In a stunning reversal, the doctor whos findings kicked off the glutenfree craze, says now hes got it wrong. Abbie boudreau has the story. Reporter glutenfree diets, popular with many celebrities, like miley cyrus and lady gaga, who say the glutenfree diet helped them lose weight. It was so huge, that even jimmy kimmel couldnt hold back. Whats gluten . What is this thing you will not eat . It is a part, i believe, of the wheat that i really dont know. Reporter but the same doctor Whose Research is credited with sparking the glutenfree debate in 2011, is now reversing his opinions. Weve just conducted a new study. We found that people who believed that gluten was causing them gut symptoms, we could find no evidence for it. Reporter he says hardtodigest sugars in wheat, rye and barley are likely to be the real culprits, not gluten. For those with celiac disease, having a glutenfree diet is still a must. But for the millions who dont have celiac, but who feel that going glutenfree would rid them of stomachaches and weight gain. He insists this time, he is positive the problem is seldomly due to gluten. For Good Morning America, abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles. Wow. I think part of the reason is celebrities talking about it for weight loss. Celiac disease is a real thing. 1 of people have that. Removing gre ining gluten is lifechanging. These are the same doctors that did the study that says you may not have celiac disease but have a problem with gluten. If you dont have celiac disease but you believe youre feeling better because of the glutenfree diet, what do you say to those folks . Theres a major mind body connection. In this study, they had the whole group of people were off gluten. Onethird they put on high gluten, low gluten and no gluten, all of them said their symptoms got worse. The belief this is working for you may actually help with your symptoms. And thats real. Thats what i want to ask you is. Is there any harm just getting rid of gluten . I mean, gluten is in wheat, in barley and rye. Its everywhere. Its a major life change to get it out of your diet. The one thing i worry about, could you have a problem that is caused by something medically that youre ignoring because youre selfdiagnosing . I would get checked out first to see whats going on. This would normally be a nerveracking endeavor. But for the sake of science, pour it on me, kids. Wow. Look at that. It seems like you can just push it away. Are these normal pants .
