Those missing files from the Flight Simulator. The Malaysian Defense minister saying the captain is, of course, innocent until proven guilty. But searching those files for those files which could contain significant information. Could be a break. You know it is a race against time to find those black boxes that could reveal so much about what happened before the batteries die. Just 17 days left now before they run out. Now this, the longest mystery in modern day aviation history takes a turn. Information about that Flight Simulator taken out of the home of the pilot of flight 370. Community Service Reporter this morning, new details about this Flight Simulator which police only confiscated a week after the disappearance of flight 370 from the home of captain zaharie shah. The countrys defense minister says there were recently deleted files on the computer which they are now trying to recover. But then they issued this reminder i would like to take this opportunity to state the passengers, the pilot and the crew remain innocent until proven otherwise. Reporter and once again, the malaysians provided confusing information about what happened in the time line in the cockpit. Sources have told abc news the radical turn off the flight path to beijing was programmed with details from one source suggesting that happened at least 12 minutes before the final radio transmission. The jetliner then crossed back over malaysia and made even more turns. This morning, the malaysians said there was nothing in the flight plan, but did not issue a flat denial. And the search is only intensifying off the coast of australia, way off the coast. And this morning, that highly sophisticated u. S. Sub hunter, the p8, is on station ready to make flights, looking for any wreckage, listening for any sounds of those black boxes. And the batteries on those boxes may only last another 2 1 2 weeks. The australians are telling us this morning they had three aircraft, including that u. S. P8, fly over the area. This is the size of texas. And where they flew today is 1,600 miles off the coast. It takes a long time to get there, a the lot of fuel, and cant stay on station as long as theyd like. Still a deep mystery. It is. All right, david, thank you. And now to abcs bob woodruff on the scene in kuala lumpur where families of the missing passengers are at a boiling point right now. Protests erupting at a press conference this morning. So much emotion. And bob joins us with the latest from there. Good morning, bob. Reporter good morning, robin. Yeah, this has been a real moment of insanity. Weve been having these news conferences every single day. The governments come out to tell everything they know about flight 370. The family members, though, have been getting very angry because theyre not getting enough information. Well, today they just poured in there and vented. It was a sudden, unexpected protest. Chinese family members unfolded a banner accusing the malaysian government of hiding the truth and delaying the search. The police then quickly whisked them out, and then it turned to chaos. It has been almost two weeks since the boeing 777 went missing. And with so few answers, theories have swirled. The latest, residents on a Remote Island in the maldives said they saw a lowflying jumbo jet at 6 15 a. M. Local time the day the jet disappeared. But this morning, the minister of transport said, thats not true. Regarding reports that it was sighted in the maldives, i can confirm they have confirmed these reports are not true. Reporter meanwhile, our abcs own Gloria Riviera retraced flight 370 taking the redeye to beijing, just like 239 passengers and crew did that fateful night. Soon after takeoff, just before 370s communications started to fail, the crew would have been starting food service. The passengers like us getting settled. In less than an hour something on 370 was seriously wrong. Were over 40 minutes into the flight. I just got on flight 370. Someone had switched off the transponder communication to air traffic control, so the plane was no longer in contact direct contact with anyone on the ground and also the point at which the plane turned to the left. Would passengers notice . Theyre in the middle of dinner, and theyre also getting ready for bed. On this flight nothing unusual except on landing when the pilot said have a blessed morning and please pray for mh370. Reporter were just starting to get more information on where the family went. The last i saw them, they were up the escalator. Exactly where theyll go from here is still unclear, but were finding out more as we go along. Robin and george . A lot of pain. Lets dig into this with david kerley and abcs consultant, steve ganyard. Steve, let me begin with you. This Flight Simulator information could be significant. And we learned from malaysian authorities that the files were deleted on february 3rd. If they are found, what could they tell us . George, its like most it is like most big pieces of evidence in this mystery, we dont know. If there is a reason for him to have erased it, theres certainly forensics that can be done. Most Police Departments most intelligence agencies can go back and look at what was erased on that hard drive. We should find out in due course. And, david, as you pointed out, some confusion on the part of the malaysian authorities now and whether or not this plane was preprogrammed to turn, was preprogrammed. Go through our best reporting on that right now. We know that u. S. Officials were briefed that it was programmed ahead of time to make that turn. But there are a lot of experts that are pushing back including pilots of the 777 saying just because you program it doesnt mean it transmits the data. So we dont know how the u. S. Investigators actually know this. They continue to say that they believe the turn was programmed. Of course, this is so significant because if it were preprogrammed, that really points you in the direction of deliberate acts. It starts to say and if you did that and have the radio call where you said, all right, good night, it does Say Something happened before everything started to be turned down turned off. Dont forget. One more piece of information could change this whole thing. Thats what i want to bring back to steve ganyard. Two big competing theories on what could have happened. Deliberate act hijacking by the pilots or under duress or some kind of a catastrophic failure. Thats one of the Big Questions out there right now analyze those two theories. I think the catastrophic failure, theres lots of ideas out there. Mishaps weve seen in the past that we can point to. Some folks are talking about a fire on board. To me i just dont see how the airplane continued to fly for 7 1 2 hours if there was a fire on board. Once fires get started, they continue and they dont let up. Look at the swissair flight, the valuejet and asiana. Usp. They all ended very quickly and badly. Ology the hijacking side, we see all these premeditated actions and we favor the human beings were involved in the disappearance. The other big question raised by the size of the search area right now, the clock ticking down on those batteries. Will this plane ever be found . Actually experts say they do think its going to be found. Will it be found in the time the batteries run out . We dont know. Air france was found long after the black boxes stopped pinging. I kind of belief these experts that at some point well find this aircraft. And we do have that concentrated area off australia theyre looking. Steve, do you agree with that . Im a little more pessimistic than david is. I think the search area is just its almost a practical impossibility. In some of the deepest, roughest waters in the world. I sure hope so but things are looking really bleak at this point. Steve and david, thanks so much. So baffling. You have to understand the frustration of the families. No question. Now the other big story, the escalating confrontation between russia and the u. S. And europe over ukraine. Russian president Vladimir Putin is defying International Criticism and declaring that russia will take over crimea, which is ukrainian territory. The white house is vowing there will be more sanctions against russia and more International Isolation but the tough talk schblt working. This morning, russianbacked Security Forces stormed a Ukrainian Naval base in crimea as russia is just tightening its grip on the region, making it clear they have no intention whatsoever of backing down. Meanwhile, Vice President biden is in the region reassuring russias nervous neighbors that the United States will protect them if russia proceeds further. And, jonathan, in talking about this and there have been many people that are weighing in and even Hillary Clinton now with some harsh words. Reporter thats right. Ominous words from Hillary Clinton yesterday in montreal. She warned that there could be another cold war. She said she doesnt want to see that. Nobody wants to see that happen, but it is primarily up to Vladimir Putin. And, robin, she also had criticism of the United States policy saying we should be doing more to help ukraine. The news helicopter from our station komotv went down during a busy rush hour and burst into flames killing a veteran cameraman and the pilot. And abcs Neal Karlinsky has the story in seattle. People here who spent the day yesterday covering the story while very publicly grieving. This morning, the ntsb is investigating what caused komotvs helicopter and its experienced crew to suddenly crash just after takeoff. We have report of a helicopter into the space needle down on the ground now. Cars involved on fire. Reporter it was around 7 40 a. M. Right alongside the space needle where the chopper hurtled towards traffic. I heard the crash, boom. And it took like two seconds for the flames to burst out. Reporter three cars were engulfed. A river of flaming fuel ran down the street. One motorist jumped out of his car critically injured. I saw the guy coming out of the car with his body on fire. Reporter killed on impact, beloved veteran photographer bill strothman and pilot gary pfitzner. We just cant believe hes gone. Reporter horrified Staff Members watched it all out the stations windows. Anchors could barely contain themselves reporting the news that their friends were gone. We have reached the point here where we can talk about the two people that we have lost. This will be a very difficult time. It is a tough day already and this is even tougher. Reporter as the wreckage was hauled away late monday an ntsb team began its investigation and a closeknit family of journal ists did their best to honor the two they lost, including strothmans own son, also a komo photographer. Im not nearly as good as my dad, like i never will be. He was able to find the Human Connection in everything he did. He was just a gentleman, a true gentleman. Reporter so, so hard for people here. The cause will take some time to figure out, but already investigators are zeroing in on one clue. Eyewitnesses said they heard a noise and the helicopter began to rotate just before crashing. Toyota now agreeing to pay one of the largest penalties in the history of the car industry. All to settle a major criminal investigation. Abcs Rebecca Jarvis has all the details. Toyota expected to announce it will pay 1 billion to settle a Justice Department investigation into those runaway cars that suddenly accelerated without warning. That was a problem abc news was first to expose back in 2009. At issue, how toyota handled reporting those sticky gas pedals which led to a recall of more than 10 million vehicles and whether the Company Provided false or incomplete statements to the government. Toyota has already paid nearly 2 billion to car owners and millions in fines. But this settlement is expected to help the company avoid criminal charges. In a statement overnight, a toyota spokesperson said we have made fundamental changes to become a more responsive and customerfocused organization and we are committed to continued improvements. A louisiana man and 13 of his alleged associates have been arrested accused of running a secret members only website featuring sexually explicit images of more than 250 children. Just moments ago that shocking announcement in court that the trial behind me temporarily suspended weeks before we thought the prosecution would get through their entire case. The lead prosecutor telling the judge he has to reexamine his case before ever having laid it out fully for her. It was a stunning announcement in court. The prosecution saying it is closing its case early next week after going through fewer than 20 of its 107 witnesses. We have recently reached a portion where forced us to reexamine the case. Reporter we learn Oscar Pistorius girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp likely knew what hit her in the split second before her tragic death. She was facing the door. Reporter a Police Ballistics expert describing that bullet, the hollow point mushrooming inside her. Steenkamp falling backward as three more bullets blasted in trying to protect herself. She was probably seated in a defensive position. Reporter one hit the hand protecting her head. That bullet went through her skull. She then collapsed on to this magazine rack. She then assumed the position next to the toilet seat relationship the blade runner alone in the front bench plugs his ears with his thumb and covering them with his hands hoping it would contradict the story that she may have been on the toilet. His defense teams crossexamination began with a bang. My lady, i tend to disagree with that. Shes in a standing position. I would expect both wounds to be here. There wouldnt be any chance for the deceased to change positions from that distance. Its impossible. Reporter he has intimidated previous witnesses including a series of flustered police couples but the ballistics expert sticking to his guns. I tend to disagree. I disagree with that. I disagree with that. Reporter were told steenkamp wouldnt have survived the fusillade. He was shoot nothing a small room being that cubicle. The person behind that door is going to be very close to it. Reporter shooting fish in a barrel. Unfortunately. Reporter on tuesday we saw pistorius reading glasses reading from what appeared to be a bible study guide on the bench behind him steenkamps mother weeping gently. We saw Reeva Steenkamps mother go back into court just in time to hear that stunning announcement from the prosecution. Now, the prosecutor said he has four or five witnesses left. Maybe after that their case will finally crystallize. Now, when theyre done with their case, then we might hear Oscar Pistorius himself take the stand. Robin thats true, matt, thank you. Abc news chief Legal Affairs anchor dan abrams is here. Okay, how about this twist . This is surprising. Its particularly surprising when you think about what they said they were going to prove. And that is premeditated murder. Theyve presented a case of intentional murder meaning they say there was an argument followed by Oscar Pistorius shooting through that door. There had not been in my view a single piece of evidence which has suggested premeditation. Thats very different from intentional murder. Now, under South African law, you dont have to prove premeditation to get a conviction on murder. But it could impact the sentence. What about the testimony from the ballistics expert going into great detail of how she was killed. Yeah, talking about exactly where he believes she was standing and i think thats really important that she was sta standing, he says, and, number two, she was facing out so shes facing the door standing up. Why is that significant . Because that sure sounds like someone who is having an argument, right . This is someone yelling through the door. Now, the defense is going to dispute that and call their own expert to say they do not believe she was standing facing the door when those bullets were fired but that does become another important point because it is crucial for the prosecutors to be able to show that there was an argument here proceeding the shooting. The strategy with the prosecution, you know, closing its case sooner than anticipated. Well, look, i think they may have thrown out a lot of prospective possible witnesses to get the defense preparing for all sorts of witnesses they may not have ever intended to call. Sometimes lawyers will play some games with each other and put together huge lists of prospective witnesses and not actually call them . Not highly unusual. Yeah. Good to have you back. The jury is out. Mick jagger speaking about his heartbreak over the suicide of his longtime girl lwren scott. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo has the story. Mick. Reporter mick jagger made a Public Statement about his very private loss on tuesday speaking out for the First Time Since Fashion Designer lwren scott, his partner, was found dead monday in an apatient suicide. In a tribute on his website jagger writes i am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way. This photo of a stunned jagger is believed to have been taken just moments after he got the shocking news while in australia for a sold out Rolling Stones tour now postponed. Others close to scott also devastated. Jaggers 22yearold daughter georgia may pulling out of a scheduled modeling appearance. The stones front man and fashion phenom had been together for more than a decade longer than either of his previous two marriages.
