Boy, that looks magnificent. Everybody is getting in the mood around here. And we have an exclusive look at those super fakes that are turning up before the big game on sunday. Authorities are cracking down on all that counterfeit merchandise floating around there. So a lot coming up. Lets get right to the weather. Emergency in atlanta. Where the dangerous snow and ice storm froze traffic, straned thousands in their cars, students in schools. Abcs matt gutman is in atlanta with the latest. Good morning, matt. Reporter good morning, george. All over atlanta, abandoned cars like this, both on and off the road. I dont know if you can see the column of cars going all the way down the hill. And overnight, all the ice and snow that melted yesterday refroze. Lots of black ice out there. It is very treacherous. This is something ive never seen covering traffic above metro atlanta. Some drivers stranded in their cars for more than 20 hours. Reporter nearly 1500 cars towed, a thousand accidents or more and many still remain stuck. The Georgia National guard was called in to hand out food to those stranded motorists. Theres just basic nutrition. This is what your soldiers are eating now in afghanistan when theyre out on patrol. Reporter that sign may have said the city is closed, but its heart was open. There was the chevy tugging the school bus. Yall see this, right. Reporter one person who simply left supplies in the median and countless Good Samaritans who took in strangers for the night. We brought her some soup and said you got to come spend the night with us. Reporter with the Georgia Department of transportation hard to find, this man used a crowbar to hack himself out. These truckers chipping away a portion of i85, nameless heroes to many. How long have you been chopping the ice here . About an hour now. Reporter this morning all of the roughly 15,000 georgia and alabama students who spent tuesday night in schools are now home safe and sound. Play in the snow. Reporter there are still hundreds of cars like this abandoned on the side of the road. Georgia is now offering free gas, free recharges and a free toe to the side of the road. George, robin . Wise decision there, matt, thank you. But now to the blame game. In atlanta a lot of fingers are being pointed over the botched response and what caused it. Abcs Steve Osunsami is in atlanta with more on that right now. Good morning, steve. Reporter good morning, robin. I just cant underline, robin, how awful this was for families here who are demanding answers from their state and local officials, those same authorities this morning are saying that part of their problem was the forecast. This morning, the fight over how this happened isnt going away. Georgias governor explaining he and other leaders were caught off guard because the forecast kept changing. Earlier tonight we were under a winter storm watch. That was canceled. Reporter at one point the only accumulating snow was expected to fall south of the city. At that time it was still in most of the forecast anticipated that the city of atlanta would only have a mild dusting or a very small accumulation, if any. Preparations were made for those predictions. Reporter well, that didnt sit well with forecasters who erupted. The National Weather service saying they were two days in advance and they appropriately issued a series of outlooks, watches and warnings. The president of the American Meteorological Society writing in his blog the buses had a tough time getting kids home but meteorologists should not be thrown under the bus. All of a sudden on cable atlantas mayor feeling the heat for this massive failure. You know how angry people are at you. Well, i dont feel people are angry at me. I think they have a great deal of frustration. Were just kind of waiting and, boom, here we go. Reporter by the time the word was getting out that all of atlantas metro highways would certainly be covered in snow, families had already sent their kids to school. Parents were on their way to work and many of the states employees and trucks were out of position. The Severe Weather warning came in between 4 00 a. M. And 5 00 a. M. In the morning. We had deicing equipment on the roads by 9 00 a. M. Reporter we have to state the obvious. The weather does change. Sometimes in an instant and so do forecasts. Russian Authorities Saying this morning they have arrested two men, brothers, believed to have been involved in the bombings in the russian city of volgograd last month. This comes as u. S. Intelligence officials are warning of what they call a substantial potential for a terror attack near the games and it again raises the question of why was sochi so close to a hot bed of terrorism chosen in the first place . Russian president Vladimir Putin put his prestige on the line to win the games for sochi. The choice of sochi is the best choice. Reporter and the decision by the International Olympic committee to choose sochi seven years ago was a big day for putin and russia. Awarded to the city of sochi. [ cheers and applause ] reporter but this morning an abc news investigation has found that behind the scenes russia says it was helped in getting the needed votes by this mystery man, gafur rakhimov. Who claims he is just a businessman with friends in olympic circles. But reports obtained by abc news from u. S. And other Law Enforcement Authorities Say he is a key player in a huge organized Crime Network that smuggles heroin through russia into europe. He is one of the four or five most important people in the heroin trade in the world. Hes absolutely a very major and very dangerous gangster. Reporter yet thats the man russia acknowledges it used to help get the olympics. The russian Olympic Committee publicly thanked him for his singleminded work in delivering the votes without which it would have been hard for sochi to count on the victory. Russian investigative journalist says people in his circle have boasted of making Cash Payments to get the olympic votes for sochi. [ speaking a Foreign Language ] translator there was obviously some sort of agreement. Reporter hes seen here at a recent event and denies paying bribes but confirmed to abc news through a translator, his role in helping russia gets the olympics. The translator said he convinced them because of his good relations with these people. He has great influence. The Winter Olympics could have been held in the austrian alps or mountains of south korea but, of course, they didnt have the influence of this accused drug dealer to help them. Days before the games begin, we begin here with a new strain on the already difficult relationship between the u. S. And russia. U. S. Officials are accusing russia of testing a new Cruise Missile in violation of a landmark treaty signed in the late 1980s. The u. S. Has alerted nato allies and believes the illegal testing may have started, in fact, as many as six years ago. And new details overnight about the massive credit card breach at target. Investigators now believe they know what happened. They say the hackers stole computer access codes from one of targets vendors believed to be a software company. The hackers were then able to install malware on store credit card readers and thus compromise the accounts of some 110 million shoppers. And some shocking details about the trucker charged in this deadly crash near chicago. He was allegedly on the job for 37 consecutive hours but he denies that he was too sleepy to drive. He stands accused of striking three vehicles killing a highway worker and injuring a state trooper in the process. And in medical news, scientists have found that a childs likelihood of becoming obese can be determined before theyre even 5 years old of a new study found that children who are overweight in kindergarten have four times the risk of becoming obese by eighth grade. Now, doctors say the window of opportunity to prevent obesity must be pushed back to an earlier age. Take a look at this. An extreme situation in new mexico. Tumbleweeds are taking over this town after a recent storm. Its like something out of a 50s b movie. People had to be rescued from their homes. Troops from a nearby military base had to be called in. Get the National Guard. Attack of the plows had to be used to clear the streets. Attack of the killer tumbleweeds. Yes. Talk about extremes. The plows were no help here. One neighborhood near lake erie in canada buried under an epic snow drift, so deep they were trapped inside for four days because the snow, as you can see here, was piled essentially up to the roof. Wow. And finally, forget tumbleweed, forget ten feet of snow, because this is worse. A giant boulder came rolling down a hill crashing through a farm in italy. That was a barn, you see there. Before it was reduced essentially to splinters. But the owners have reason to be thankful because a second you can see there, even larger boulder stopped at the doorstep literally of their house and when you see it again all from a distance, it is a miracle that no one was in that boulders path. And so the takeaway from the newscast today, yes, its not so good, but it could be worse. Boulders and snow drifts and tumbleweeds, oh, my. They could be worse. A lot of takeaway. People are off the ship and there are plans to get it right back out to sea just days after almost 700 passengers fell violently ill. Theyre speaking out now and abcs gio benitez is in bayonne, new jersey, where the ship is docked. Good morning, gio. Reporter good morning to you, robin. A dramatic cleanup is underway right now. What was supposed to be a tenday vacation turned into a little piece of hell. This morning Royal Caribbean crew members are scrubbing this ship down preparing for the next sail tomorrow, just hours after passengers described a horrific outbreak at sea. You never felt pain until you did this. One of the guys was coughing so bad and getting sick so bad he fell out of a chair and split his head open. Reporter watch as one is taken off the explorer of the o seas on a stretcher and taken away by ambulance. Some passengers say that on the ship they had to wait as long as six hours to get into the clinic. I had three days of sickness and quarantine and, of course, you had to stay in your room. They provided everything that you needed, but so that you didnt infect others. Reporter before the ship can go out again, workers will have to clean the entire ship from top to bottom, 15 passenger decks, 14 elevators, more than 1500 state rooms, 3 swimming pools, an ice skating rink, even a mini golf course, the likely culprit, that dreaded norovirus. It makes a perfectly healthy individual miserably sick, almost instantly. Noroviruses are very tough, theyre hard to eradicate. The virus can remain viable on surfaces for quite a long time. Reporter and thats why todays cleanup is so crucial. The methods that have been so effective in controlling this virus once we understood it was happening will just be continued to be used as well as a few others to get the to ensure that the ship is fully sanitized. According to homeland security, federal officials have already intercepted a record 20 million in fake gear and tickets. Thats 15 more than last year when they seized over 17 million in fakes before the big game. What is it about the super bowl that makes counterfeiting prime time . Reporter Good Morning America going behind the scenes at the Jfk International mail facility in new york where 700,000 packages arrive each day, inspecting a new shipment of fakes thats just come in. A verdict expected today in her latest murder trial in florence, italy. This will be the third verdict since her case began more than six years ago. Her original murder conviction was overturned but last year Italys Supreme Court ordered this new trial. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has the story. Reporter in what seems like a case of deja vu just hours from now, amanda knox will once again hear the verdict of an Italian Court once again undoubtedly holding her breath and praying the nightmare will end. If theres a verdict of conviction, they should respect the terms and deadline, this italian criminal lawyer says, italy can ask for extradition. But how could this happen . After being convicted of murdering her former roommate, Meredith Kercher in 2009 and serving four years in prison she was cleared after a stunning new trial found the original evidence unreliable, returning home to seattle writing a book and telling all to diane sawyer. Did you kill Meredith Kercher . No. Were you there that night . No. Reporter but italys highest court overturned the acquittal and ordered a new trial, oddly this time italian prosecutors completely changed their theory. In the first trial knox was accused of killing kercher during a drugfueled erotic game. This time prosecutors said the murder was actually driven by a fight over a dirty apartment and an unflushed toilet. Through it all knox now sporting a new short haircut at home in seattle avoided the trial finishing her degree at the university of washington and worrying about whats next. Her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito is still on trial for murder and will be in court today. There is no evidence now and there never will be any evidence so until this matter is completely resolved and resolved favorably, it will remain understandably concerned. Reporter whatever the verdict today, incredibly, it wont be the end. The case can be appealed yet again to Italys Supreme Court. For Good Morning America, Neal Karlinsky, abc news, seattle. And abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor dan abrams here for the countdown to the verdict. And, of course, we heard from the attorney. Theres going to be concern from her family. How worried should she be . Well, look, in italy this is viewed as a close case. Remember, this Appeals Court is the same court, although not the same judge, et cetera, where she was found guilty. The Supreme Court heard it. They said, no, no, no, were not abiding by that verdict. Go back, retry this case again and then lets talk. Meaning if she is convicted by this court, it will still go again to the Supreme Court but i guess the bigger point is that i think a lot of people in this country have assumed this case is over. Its done. Amanda knox did her book tour. Shes out there. As far as the italians are concerned this case is not over yet. So what happens if, indeed, the conviction is reinstated. Then back to the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court affirmed it, i think there would be a request by italy for extradition. You think they would, the Supreme Court would. I do. I think theres a very good chance that if the Appeals Court decides to convict, that the Supreme Court will uphold that conviction and that would mean that there would be an extradition fight. She would have some arguments here. She would say its double jeopardy meaning wait a second i was acquitted already once. You cant retry me. The response to that would be, no, that was not a final decision. That was a decision pending an appeal. So there will be some interesting legal arguments to come if that happens. Would the u. S. Government be put in a difficult situation . I think it would be a very tough spot because, remember, they have to, you know, they have an extradition agreement with italy. Its an interesting legal argument thats being made by amanda knox if shes convicted, but there will be so much public pressure, i think, to say, this is ridiculous, amanda knox is innocent, why are we doing in that they would be in a very tough spot. So this is going to get this could be get very interesting although none of that happens if shes found not guilty. And served many years in jail. Already, the jury is out later. Yes. Thank you, guys. Well get to that hairraising rescue so high up in the air skydiver knocked cold at more than 12,000 feet plunging fast, not able to open his chute until his friends saved the day. And amy robach is here with an abc news exclusive. Good morning, amy. Good morning, its hard to imagine a more heartstopping race against time, the countdown starting as soon as they all jumped out of that plane. It was terror in the sky for 25yearold james lee. Watch as lee and a group of experienced skydivers prepare to jump from 12,000 feet. They freefall over the british countryside but for lee who has jumped more than 1,000 times, something is terribly wrong. A jumper that left the aircraft afterwards came down a little bit unstable and knocked me unconscious on the back of my head. From then i have no real recollection of what happened on that part of the sky dive. Reporter lees arms are limp and flailing in the wind as he tumbles uncontrollably at nearly 120 miles an hour. His helmet camera capturing the horrifying ordeal but what happens next is incredible. Two of my friends that saw what happened came down, tried to see if i was responding to basic hand signals and there was no response. Reporter the friends stabilized lee by each grabbing an arm and miraculously managed to open his parachute. Lee still unconscious soars through the air but he finally comes to looked as he takes control of his chute, lee navigates a safe landing and from the sound of it, hes relieved to have two feet on the ground. I was just happy to be on the ground because Everything Everything goes a bit slower then. Incredible and james lee says that this frightening accident has not deferred him one bit from skydiving.
