Tropical storm watches are posted in rhode island, mass massachusetts and maine where hurricane watches are also up. Preparations are being made. Storm shutters are up. Seems like idalia and franklin were just last week, where we are dealing with reach erosion up and down the coast. Were dealing now with lee. The waves will be monstrous. Look at whats going to go on today, across bermuda. 30 to 40 foot waves will be pushing up across the atlantic towards nova scotia, towards new england. 10 to 15 footers here in cape cod and rhode island. We could see a storm surge on the bay side. The biggest storm surge will be it looks like across new brunswick, maine potentially and nova scotia. Its been awhile, george. Now to the end of the two week long man hunt for the escaped killer in pennsylvania. Were learning details about how Police Tracked him down and a canine took him down. Trevor ault is in pennsylvania with details. Good morning, trevor. Reporter good morning, michael. This is the spot where that twoweek man hunt came to a heart pounding conclusion yesterday. Overnight we have learned Danilo Cavalcante revealed some details to authorities, including several instances where he narrowly evaded capture but somehow avoided getting noticed. Im proud to announce the subject is in custody. Reporter this morning convicted killer Danilo Cavalcante back behind bars, now in a maximum security facility two weeks after breaking out of prison in pennsylvania. Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won. Reporter the man hunt coming to an intense conclusion wednesday morning. Cavalcante in that stolen eagles sweat shirt. Described by authorities as wet and weathered. The 34yearold detailing his survival in a four hour interview with authorities. He did say on three occasions Law Enforcement officers did almost step on him. He also told us that he survived by eating water melon the first couple days. He stated he intended to car jack someone in the next 24 hours and that he was going to head north to canada or try to get out of the United States and head back to puerto rico. Reporter Officials Say officers cornered cavalcante in South Coventry country. A dea plane with thermal imaging detecting heat signals around 1 a. M. , about an hour after a home burglary alarm was triggered. Heat on the north line of the woods. Reporter a Lightning Storm forced that plane to leave. The officers then forming a tight perimeter waiting until sun rise. Shortly after 8 a. M. Tactical teams converged on the area where the heat source was. They were able to move in very quietly. They had the elment of surprise. Reporter cavalcante was lying prone in some under brush armed with that stolen loaded rifle Officials Say by the time he realized hed been spotted, he was already surrounded. That did not stop him from trying to escape. He began to crawl through thick underbrush taking his rifle with him as he went. Reporter but it was this customs and Border Protection canine named yoda, who finally took cavalcante down. Authorities say likely preventing cavalcante from ever firing that rifle. Officers in Tactical Gear loading cavalcante into an armored van a visible trail of blood on his face from a dog bite wound, but otherwise unharmed. Your officers were authorized to use lethal force. Was the goal though to bring him in alive . It always is. Thats a last resort. Its meant to protect the public so that we dont have someone who we consider to be a very dangerous individual who poses a threat if hes allowed to continue being out there in the community. Reporter cavalcante was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his exgirlfriend. Her sister posting on instagram, thanking Law Enforcement writing, the past two weeks have been extremely painful and terrifying. And while he is already facing life in prison, cavalcante is now expected to be arraigned on a felony escape charge and hell appear via video for the 2017 murder out of brazil for which he was never captured. As you say, that death toll continues to rise. This morning the death toll in libya climbing after catastrophic flooding. Two dams collapsing during an unprecedented storm, unleashing tons of water. More than 6,000 killed, with 9,000 still unaccounted for. Entire communities completely washed away by the floods. The coastal city of derna receiving the worst of the damage, rescuers searching for survivors and for answers for bereaved family members. One father overcome as his dead child is removed from the rubble. First responders battling through debris and dangerous wreckage with entire homes and buildings washed out to sea. According to the u. N. S International organization for migration, at least 30,000 people are displaced by the flooding. Libya is divided between two rival governments, which is slowing down the delivery of aid. France sending help, with others like egypt, delivering supplies and teams to help the rescue efforts. While increasingly this is less about rescue and more about recovery, the mayor saying the number of dead could reach more than 20,000 and tragically little hope remains of finding anyone alive. Reporter rebecca, good morning. The Ocean Explorer has been stuck in the mud and sand since monday in greenland. This morning that ship is finally free after some help from a large Fishing Research vessel. This morning hundreds of passengers stranded aboard the luxury cruise ship running aground in greenland are finally free, after being stuck for several days. At more than 20,000 per person, the cruise, similar to the one shown here, promising views of the Northern Lights and stunning glaciers. The Ocean Explorer, with 206 passengers on board, set out from norway on september 1st and was supposed to be halfway through a 22 day expedition in the Arctic Circle, but instead, it ran aground monday, getting stuck in sand and mud in a remote rugged area of the Northeast Greenland National Park known for its long and typically deep fuels. While the crew waited for assistance, a passenger interviewed by australian media said the crew had lowered the life boats, the anchor and emptied water to try and lighten its load. That person also saying there were patients with covid on the boat. Aurora expeditions, the australian based company that operates the ship, said all along the passengers and crew were safe. Family members of two of the victims say so far the case has been shrouded in secrecy. They are arguing without cameras in the courtroom, they may not get a fair trial. This morning bryan kohberger, the man accused of murdering four university of idaho students back in court as the judge heard arguments on whether or not to allow cameras in his upcoming trial. Kohberger seen smiling at times yesterday next to his lawyer, facing charges of first degree murder in the slayings of the four university of idaho students. The defense and prosecution both want cameras south of the courtroom, but some family members of the victims say cameras will help ensure transparency. In a statement to news nation, the families of kaylee said nobody knows anything about the case which leads to speculation. That speculation is fueled by the secrecy surrounding everything that is filed and every hearing that is closed off to the media and the public. The judge considering all arguments, but told the court he doesnt want this case to turn into the oj simpson trial. If anybody watched any part of that case, it was a circus. Reporter several Media Outlets are requesting cameras be allowed in the courtroom. The judge said a final decision will be made in the next couple weeks. The trial was supposed to start in october, but kohberger recently waved his right to a speedy trial so it could be delayed. Guys . Thank you very much, erielle. Going to go now to the american cave explorer mark dickey, who was rescued after being trapped in a turkish cave more than 3,400 feet under ground for 12 days. He suffered a life threatening emergency, but thankfully he was saved and is recovering in the hospital. Mark joins us live from turkey right now. We got to say, mark, we are so glad to see you on the road to recovery. How are you feeling this morning . Compared to that seven, ten days ago, i am feeling fantastic. As you should be. Doctors pinpointed have the doctors pinpointed what caused the gastrointestinal bleeding that you experienced there . And what are they saying about your recovery . The tests are still on going. Its not yet totally conclusive. Theyve seen some things in there. I have still got tests pending. As far as the recovery goes, every single day im getting stronger. They gave me much more better diet which makes me happy. Well take it a day at a time until this gets resolved. Youre looking pretty good right now. Yesterday we were fortunate to speak to your partner jessica. She said she knew immediately that once you fell ill, that she had to leave your side to get medical help. What were you telling yourself through those moments when you were waiting for help to show up . Theres not that much that you tell yourself. You kind of just survive. Just like jessica has medical training that allowed her to save my life, i have got a pretty significant medical background for emergencies. It was really just making sure that everyone that was with me took care of me and, you know, watching out for decreased pulse, decreased blood volume, transition into a shock position if i needed to, kind of prolong everything as long as i could. It got pretty tight at the end there, that i was pretty close to fading. What am i telling myself . Just keep surviving and every moment is another moment theyre gonna get back with the necessary medical supplies. Hold on to hope. Hold on to hope. You said at one point you didnt think you would make it. But when did you star to think that you were going to be okay . Basically the moment jessica got back. She made that climb out. She made the climb back in with medical supplies. The second she came in to that cave camp at 1,000 meters with four bags worth of fluid, that was a game changer. We used three of them right away and kind of held on to the fourth because you didnt really know how long it would take for the next round of rescue to come. I felt like i wanted more fluids, but it was kind of like, lets save it. Use that last if we need to. Lets save it just in case. Were looking at images of the rescue right now. It was not an easy rescue. There were Narrow Passage ways, dangerous conditions. We saw the incredible images of you being hoisted to safety. What went through your mind when you finally reached the surface . Job well done, you know . Once you started moving, it was speck spectacular. These are honestly all, you know, cavers are kind of family. These are people i knew. Every step of the way i had people by my side that i knew would get me out. So getting to the surface wasnt a question. It wasnt like, is this going to happen . The moment of full rescue got there, i knew i would get to the surface. It was fast. It was really fast. Once we started moving, it happened a lot faster than i expected. Man, i was happy to get to the surface and see those stars and smell the fresh air. I have no doubt. That was a good moment. Im sure it was. We know there were over 200 rescuers there, doctors in the hospital who are helping you right now. But then theres your partner jessica. She jumped in to rescue mode immediately. She said yesterday, i knew i had to leave immediately to make sure i could go get help. Is there anything that youd like to say to her . Thank you. No, like if there was any im alive because of the rescuers. Im the lucky face of all these people who are the real heroes, essentially. But jessica is the one that saved my life initially. She saved my life period. Her determination to climb out of 1,000 meter, get those medical supplies, get back in. That would be multiple days of travel and she did it in under 24. She is one hell of a woman, one hell of a caver, one hell of a rescuer, one hell of a paramedic. Shes awesome. I got to add one more thing. One hell of a partner, my friend. Uhoh, im in trouble. Yes, they gave me a shot at flying, getting behind the yoke, not before we got into the eye, of course. But now i understand how great and how big this is for our safety. All right. We took off. Lets go. This morning, we just flew into hurricane lee. Flying 160. Were doing what they call the first pass. Im just starting to see some storm structure. Wow. Witnessing something few people will ever see. Then we plow through lees wide swath of 115 mile per hour winds. Its a hurricane. There it is. Its bumpy, nausea inducing. And this is where we spend the next three hours. Just before sunset and were seeing kind of a messier eye on the inside. Hoping to get a clear picture before the sun goes all the way away. Noah runs two missions a day, flying into hurricanes to gather data. From lakeland, florida, we flew east southeast for two hours. Bring it back to the right. Okay. Thats good. I even got a chance to fly the plane. We watch as they gather Critical Data from inside the hurricane. This instrument is going to go right here. Leanns going to drop a bunch of them into this tube, out the airplane, into the eye wall of the storm. It is going to get data like temperature, pressure, wind speeds and all that, goes into tonights computer models. That instrument falls through the storm. And in real time, it radios back data. We made several passes through the eye wall in what they call a butterfly pattern measuring several parts of lee. This plane is stacked with high tech gadgets and scientists all getting essentially a cat scan of the hurricane. One of the hunters is a legend, jack parish. Hes passed through the eye wall of a hurricane more than 700 times in the last 43 years. What would a hurricane forecast be without the instrumentation and data we are about to collect . You have to initialize a forecast model with really good data. And lacking the data in the core of the hurricane, wed still be back at that four day, maybe five day forecast period. And that data has been invaluable, especially over the past decade. Weve seen more than two dozen storms rapidly intensify in the Atlantic Basin often right before hitting land. So as the climate warms, though, we do anticipate seeing more rapid intensification. You will be able to capture that . We will be able to capture that as it comes on. Lot of things feed into that. Wind temperature, sheer, all those things. It has made the forecasts better, considerably, in the last couple of decades. I have to say that plane behind me has more than a dozen instruments on it, five radars included. Noah is stepping it up. They are now using sail drones. Thats the instrument you see there. Thats unmanned. Goes under and through the hurricane on the surface so it can utilize whats happening from the plane and also there. Theyre also starting to use drone drones. Theyre going to be dropping them out of the plane. They can fly around, get even more data. I do have to admit, it was a tough ride. They said it wasnt even that mad. At points they have to fly they call it crabbing where theyre sideways going into those head winds to try to get to the right point to drop all the instruments. The agency and the Company Buffalo games are now recalling 52,000 chuckle and roar ultimate water beads activity kits due to ingestion, choking and other hazards. The company said it has received one report of a 10monthold dying after swallowing these beads back in july and a 9monthold child was seriously injured after ingesting a bead in november of last year, requiring surgery to remove it. Those kits were sold exclusively at target. The company telling us overnight they no longer sell this product and removed it from stores and online last year. It is an important milestone, george. Thank you. It is part and due to the strong jobs market and the rise of remote work. The number of moms in the labor force with Young Children is now at an alltime high. Its been a recordbreaking summer for women in the work force. With the Participation Rate for those between the ages of 2554 hitting never before seen heights, a stark contrast to the troves of women who left the work force during the height of the pandemic. Were seeing an increase in hybrid work. We see that women apply to remote work more than men do. In that case, flexibility really becomes, i think, the lynch pin for getting women back into the labor force. Flexibility was crucial for anne lewis, who returned to work about a year after leaving her job following the premature birth of her son, who needs special care. I needed a company that was willing to adjust if i had an emergency. I had to position myself to have the flexibility and have the income enough to invest in my sons future. So i was very transparent about how much money i wanted to get paid. I was very transparent about what i needed in terms of flexibility. Among women returning to the work force, those with Young Children are leading the trend, in part due to more flexible options as well as inflation and rising child care costs. But there are also more opportunities. There were still more jobs than job seeker, with roles in customer service, sales in nursing topping the list for most in demand. Theres a lot of flexibility in sectors that provide consulting accounting, bookkeeping services. I would encourage people to think not just in the sector that traditionally sees more women in clusters but looking across all sectors theres a lot of tune for hybrid and remote work. Anne said the job flexibility thats allowed her household a dual income has been essential to providing the best care and education for her son. Without the flexibility, theres no resources. Without the income, there were no resources. There was no extra help. There wouldnt be an opportunity for my son to go to one of the best schools that he goes to now. I get to be a part of giving him the world because the world was not promised to him at one point. Rebecca, having more women in the work force critical for the economy. Absolutely critical. Its critical for the bottom line of the United States of america. More tax revenue, more spending power. Our economy is powered by consumers, twothirds of the economy is consumer spending. More women working means more money in the economy. This is why people are paying such close attention to this question of child care because weve seen all of these gains since the pandemic. But this child care issue is still something that keeps women out. How can working moms who need the flexibility negotiate it . Its so important to have the conversation up front. Thats what anne did. When you are negotiating for a new job, thats the time you have the best power to get exactly what you want out of that employer. Linkedin also recommends that you let the company know what the benefit is going to be to them. So its not just, i need this for me. Its, im going to save time on my commute. I can work from home and be more accessible to you as an employee. And then finally what you want to do is offer a trial period. If the employer is still pushing back say, why dont we do this for two weeks and just see how it goes . And if you can make it work for those two weeks, you can make it work for the whole thing. You are a fashion icon. Its fashion week in new york. But youre here to talk about Mental Health. Its not your first time on gma talking about this. This is your passion. You are a cofounder of a Mental Health coalition. Something you launched here on gma three years ago. Now you have a new project called sos. Tell us about that. So, thank you, michael. Also for context, the coalition has become the largest provider, the Largest Coalition of Mental Health services in the country. We have this extraordinary platform. We were able to bring together some so impressive, people who are so committed to this shared vision. And we are launching what we are calling sos, safe on life standards. Never before have there been Safety Standards for young people to navigate the universe of social media as well as all the other gaming and Everything Else that intersects with it. So were announcing that. Were very excited about what it means. Basically the annoying element is that today were living, i believe, in a digital wild west. On traditional media like this, you can mention a fourletter word without it getting beeped. On social media where they exist, they spend 90 of their time, you can say it, you can show it, you can enact it and you can invited them to be part of it. There are no guidelines. So how do you establish we go through such degrees to prevent, to protect our kids. We were just talking about your daughters. Well do everything. Theres nothing that we can consume today where there arent some standards attached to them for children. But there are none here. So were very excited. We are able to bring together some of the brightest minds and the most qualified cross functional people from Mental Health experts that we are referring on the panel. Mental health, from child safety. Standards Development Efforts and tech who were going to come together and establish and define these standards which will ultimately speak to what we think are the pervasive needs of kids, of their parents, of educators and ultimately legislators. If you go to the movies, theres a rating system. The internet is like the digital wild west right now. What kind of tools will this program provide . It will defy standards. Ultimately, by having there will be a ratings system. Youll be able to well be able to hold tech and everybody else accountable for the first time. Well be able to speak to the users and their advertisers. There will be a financial implication that theyll deal with and theyll navigate. I do believe that tech is not the enemy here. And weve worked closely with them and theyve all agreed to support this to the degree they are able to the degree it makes sense. Weve been working closely with meta. Google has agreed to support this, and tik tok as well. Including apple and eventually twitch in gaming. Where can people find more information about this if they want to get involved with sos . [ applause ] yeah thank you. Welcome back to the show. Congratulations on your novel. It might surprise people to hear you picked a topic, World War Two era fiction. What drew you to that . Well, when i was little i went to go stay with my nan, my grandmother, a lot. She would tell me stories from her childhood, living through world war ii. When i got older and started kind of getting into the industry, i thought these stories felt so important to me. I was really passionate about bringing these stories to life. So nineteen steps happened. I was happy to put all of those stories on to paper so i could really immortalize my grandmothers stories and her presence. What can you tell us about the stories . The story follows a heroic female lead experiencing love, lost friendship, romance in war time. Its loosely based on my grandmother and parts of even who i am and pretty much the matriarchal part of my family. It has lots of twists and turns, but ultimately brings everyone through this journey. And its getting great reviews. The Associated Press even wrote about your grandmother, your nan. They said late beloved grandmother would assuredly be proud of this. How would you feel to know her thoughts on all of this . I mean, i think it would be the most meaningful part of this whole experience. Knowing what she thinks of this would, yes, it would be one of my greatest achievements, personal achievements as well. I think she would be very excited. She wasnt somebody who liked all the attention being on her, so she would probably, you know [ laughter ] look away and drink her cup of tea. So, yeah. But i would have loved for her to read this story. The story centers on a part of london which is also important to you. Yes. She was raised in bethnal green, my mom was and i frequently visit there. That is where the story is based. We got to say congratulations. Lot of things changed since you were here last. Youre engaged. Yes. Yes. The Love Interest in your book is in america, just like your fiance jake. Is that a coincidence . [ laughter ] i was developing nineteen steps before i actually met jake. Really . Yeah. So the american soldier is actually kind of an idea that came along far beyond jake. But jake is, of course, the american in my life. You know jake is sat home going, shes saying that now. [ laughter ] how are the wedding plans coming . Really, really exciting. Its such an amazing part of my life so far. Just being able to do it with someone makes it even better.
