A memorial is growing in oakland where mourners have left flowers and other remembrances at the scene. The death toll now at 33. Investigators expect to find more victims. A criminal probe has now been launched in what is the deadliest fire ever in that city. There are questions about whether it could have been prevented. Lauren lyster joins us from oakland. Yeah, just about halfway down the block behind me, in the warehouse, crews are pushing forward with the search for the missing in that at that party. As you mentioned, the District Attorney launching a criminal investigation into this tragedy. This morning, firefighters pushing forward in the roundtheclock search for the missing. As the Staggering Number of People Killed in this massive friday night warehouse fire keeps rising, survivors recounting the horror of that inferno. Everyone is turning to us and saying, you should have done this. You should have done that. Dont you think we feel that . Dont you think we feel how many people died in our home . Reporter that woman saying she was part of the wellknown building called the ghost ship. Filled that night for a concert. People werent supposed to be living here. It only has permits for a warehouse. Code violations show a history of complaints. Okaylands mayor promising to find out if this worst fire in the citys history was preventable. I right now have a team of City Employees combing through every Public Record that we have of this building. Reporter Officials Say most of the dead were on the second floor, which collapsed. And where pictures from before the fire show a maze of makeshift art studios. I think we were surprised at first to find that many bodies where we found them. Reporter a tragedy and some still filled with anxiety as loved ones wait for news on the missing. I have prepared myself for the worst. Reporter this mothers only son at that party with his fiance. Shooting this video timestamped about an hour before the flames erupted. His mom speaking to a friend who was with the couple. He said it turned dark, so dark, he couldnt see. He had to put his hands against the wall to get out. Reporter authorities so far identifying at least eight of the victims. Most in their 20s and 30s. One as young as 17. And the Coroners Office telling loved ones of potential victims to save dna samples for held inspect the grim task of naming the the deceased. Mara and ryan . Were hearing more about complaints launched on the property. What is the latest on that investigation . Reporter in addition of complaints launched over the years, some going as far back as 205, the most recent complaints in mid november, citing blight and construction inside that was not to code and illegal. An inspector did come out and check out the white house. They were not able to gain access inside. They did confirm the blight complaint. The trash piling up. The fire chief just told me they are in a work stop average right now. Officials decide the last night at 10 00 it wasnt safe for firefighters to be inside the building. Someone on the roof noticed the front of the building was lending and they decided to call it. They said we have to pull everyone out and stop searching. We have to secure this building. It was a hard decision for the fire teams to hear. We had crews both from oakland and Alameda County on deck yesterday. I came back in at 10 00 right when we did the work stoppage. To see five crews anxiously wanting to continue because we mad such amazing headway. We went from being close to 70 of the building. Yes said she searched 70 of the building and it was frustrating to step. They have fund 33 victims inside the building. She said they do expect the number to go up. They are not sure when they will be able to get to more victims because they have to secure the building. There is a chance they might be able to start searching the back of the building later this morning pole the rest of the building later today. They do not know. They are in a waitandsee situation and they realize they are in a race against the clock because we have heard that rain is cing on thursday. The goal is.
