While air strikes against isis are ongoing in iraq. The campaign is intensifying on the ground with kurdish and iraqi fighters taking on the isis militants who have brutally murdered american and british hostages. They continue to spread terror over iraq and syria. Prompting this question on the cbs news program 60 minutes. How did they end up where they are in control of so much territory . Was that a complete surprise to you . Well, i think our head of the intelligence community, jim clapper, has acknowledged i think they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. I mean, he didnt say that just say that we underestimated isil. He said, we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies. The iraqi army, to fight. Thats true. Thats absolutely true. Prodemocracy protests are expanding in hong kong as demonstrators are still blocking major roads. In one neighborhood, protesters are camping out with food, water, and shelter from the sun. Yesterdays protests turned violent. Police hit protesters with person spray as they tried to tear down metal barricades. Dozens of people have been arrested. Military and other rescue workers have started airlifting more than two dozen bodies from the peak of a japanese volcano this morning. At least 31 people are believed to have died when the volcano erupted without warning over the weekend. How they died is unclear. Whether from toxic gases, suffocating ash, or falling rocks. An american doctor who has been exposed to ebola in sierra leone has been brought to a hospital in maryland. That doctor admitted for observation at the National Institutes of health. Few details about the patient were made public. Exposure to ebola does not necessarily mean someone will get sick. Meanwhile, hundreds of children across the country are getting sick with the fastspreading enterovirus. Up to 45 states now have confirmed or suspected cases of enterovirus d68. Now several children in colorado are exhibiting a frightening new symptom, paralysis. The cdc is looking into whether the enterovirus is responsible for that. Parents are being urged to be vigilant. When your child is not acting the way you would expect with a cold simple tom, thats when you really need to access care. Breathing difficulty and wheezing is important to deal with. Doctors say its important to note this is a relatively common class of virus with up to 15 million cases a year. Deaths or lasting damage are extremely rare. The manhunt for eric frein in the pennsylvania poconos is now entering its third week. And authorities are now taling with a potential new danger. Jury selection gets under way in phoenix today in the final phase of the murder trial of jodi arias. The former waitress admitted to killing her exboyfriend, travis alexander, shooting him in the face and stabbing him 29 times. Jurors last year couldnt agree on her punishment. Prosecutors have one more shot at the death penalty. If this jury cant agree, the judge will send her to life in prison or eligibility for release after 25 years.
