The snow has tapered off, but not before dumping record amounts along the east coast. Thousands of flights have been canceled, and this mornings commute could be a treacherous one. Major cities from the midwest to the northeast are digging out along with new york city, chicago, philadelphia and washington, d. C. All saw significant snowfall from this storm. Accuweathers mark mancuso is standing by with new information about the storm. But we begin our coverage with abcs mary bruce, who is live in a snowy washington, d. C. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, guys. From a frigid washington, d. C. , covered in white, this city, like so many others, is just starting to dig out from its daylong shutdown. From blinding snow to frightening spinouts and backbreaking shoveling, the midwest and northeast pummeled by another winter wallop. Its crazy. Its pretty wild. Reporter more than 80 million americans pounded by the polar freeze buried under heavy snow, over a foot high in some places. The icy great lakes more frozen than theyve been in decades. Snow transformed roads across the northeast into sledding hills. Cars slipping, sliding and skidding. Its terrible. I mean its ridiculous. I almost did a three i almost lost control of the vehicle. Reporter this fedex in indianapolis crumpled into three pieces. The snowcovered new jersey interstate caused this charter bus to flip over. A lot of people should have just stayed at home today. Reporter and air travel is no better. Over a thousand cancellations already on the board for today. The snow is still painting the northeast white, a state of emergency declared in new york and new jersey. Schools already closed in boston, philadelphia and washington, d. C. , and its not over yet. Next up, bonechilling cold and intense winds. Those willing to brave the snow in the Nations Capital had a ball, a snowball. Schools closed. We finished all of our work. Theres nothing else to do. Reporter now, the snow here in washington is finally starting to taper off, but dont let that fool you. It is still bitterly cold out here, and its only going to get worse. As mary was saying, if the snow and wind is act one for the eastern half of the country, get set for act two, plunging temperatures. Accuweather meteorologist mark mancuso joining us now. Mark, is this storm making its way out . Yeah, it certainly is. Looks like the worst is over for snow right along the immediate east coast, but for southern new england, especially cape cod and the islands, well, the snow will continue for a few more hours. But even here it will taper off, but we could see another 3 to 6 inches over southeast massachusetts, in particular cape cod, the islands as that area of snow starts to surge its way up from the southwest. But north and west of boston, its over. New york city, philadelphia, washington, d. C. , and down towards norfolk its over. Believe it or not, around norfolk, virginia, we had about 4 inches of snow. Thats crazy. Now, here in the northeast, the winds are starting to ramp up near the coast as the storm intensifies. These are recent wind gusts anywhere from 20 to 40 miles an hour. So, when you combine that with some pretty chilly arctic air, well, were looking at some low realfeel temperatures. Currently in boston, its 11. New york is 12 and d. C. , 13. So that snow has been light and fluffy, so if you like to make snowball, its kind of hard to do that. Youll certainly have to bundle up for the morning hours. Its cold out there. Look at those realfeel temperatures, well below zero. And guess what, it does look like this cold pattern will continue for awhile, so the storm pulls out. Brisk winds, especially near the coast, there will be blowing, drifting snow, and that will make it hard to keep those roadways clear. Now back to you guys. All right, accuweathers mark mancuso. T. Cop was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer. It happened as both were at a home following up on a crime that had been committed on b. A. R. T. Property. Now, this is the first time a b. A. R. T. Officer has been killed while on duty. A vigil was held last night on the campus of Purdue University for a student shot to death earlier in the day. Police say the victim was a senior Electrical Engineering student and teaching assistant. The suspect, also a student, is being held in the county jail. The relationship between the two men is not clear, but police say the shooting was not random. Federal prosecutors have indicted the former governor of virginia and his wife for multiple counts of corruption. Bob and Maureen Mcdonnell accused of taking loans, cash, gifts and shopping sprees from the head of a Dietary Supplement Company who hoped the governor would endorse his product. Four officers came here to the apartments to do a search warrant, serve it, and they found an empty apartment. Shear video of sergeant tom smith, the officer killed yesterday. This is from an old bart press conference we had on file. He supervised the officer who shot him so he was supervising the officer at scene. They were at the apartment complex to search the unit of a suspect who had been arrested for robbing passengers on the bart trains. The officers walked in with guns drawn and investigators are still trying to figure out why one gun went off and hit sergeant smith. You have to understand how devastated he is at this point.
