And good morning. We begin this tuesday with the latest details on that mass shooting at the Washington Navy yard. The motive for the shootings still unknown. The facility remains open this morning with only essential personnel reporting for work. Heres the very latest. 13 people including the lone gunman are dead. Eight victims are hurt. Were learning that he used security clearance to enter that building with a rifle and a handgun. Our coverage begins with abcs Tahman Bradley near the navy yard in washington. Tahman . Reporter good morning. The navy yard reopens today for essential personnel, as authorities continue searching for clues about the suspect. Overnight, we learned that the suspect may have had a grudge against the navy. The fbi says 34yearold aaron alexis is behind the terror at the Washington Navy yard. We have an active shooter on the fourth floor. Reporter 12 people were killed and 8 injured before alexis died at the hands of police. We have the single and sole person responsible for the loss of life. This morning, authorities are urgently seeking the Public Health about aaron alexis. Were learning as much as we can about his recent movements, contacts and associates. Reporter overnight in brooklyn, the authorities questioned the suspects family as they continue to search for a motive. Alexis had a valid security clearance that had him access building 197. The horror started as the work day began. He came around the corner. And he fired two or three shots. He raised and aimed at us. And he hit high on the wall. Reporter the navy yard stayed on lockdown for more than six hours. The horrifying attacks felt across washington. The faa halted all flights out of Reagan National airport. The suspect had a history of disturbing behavior. He was arrested in 2010, accused of recklessly discharging a firearm into a neighbors apartment. And in 2005, hi confessed to shooting out tires of another mans car. Overnight, some families were still awaiting word from their loved ones. The victims range 46 to 73, all survivalians. Overnight, weve learned the names of some of those killed at the navy yard. 7 of the 12 victims including 59yearold michael armed. 53yearold silvia frasier. Kathy gaarde. John roger johnson. Frank kohler. Vishnu pandit. And Kenneth Bernard proctor. And the rest of the victims are being withheld until the families can be notified. Theres a key question that remains. Who is aaron alexis . Profilers will be talking to just about everyone who ever knew him. What the profilers are likely to begin seeing is a study in contradiction. Aaron alexis was a convert to buddhism. A friend said he used to meditate with him. Hes a good guy. What i know. I cant say he did or not. But with me, nothing to be, like, tell me that hes going to be aggressive. No sign that these going to shoot someone. Reporter but alexis father said that his son had anger management problems. He complained about being a victim of discrimination and about the navy. He didnt seem like he would be that kind of person to be upset enough to go out and do Something Like this. Reporter alexis worked as a Thai Restaurant in texas. He traveled to thailand. Those who knew him cannot hide their disbelief. Its really sad that hes gone already. And that he took 12 other people with him. Reporter one thing that is clear, is alexis was not a loner. He had friends. A support network. He had car trouble. He asked me for some help. And i helped in every way i could. Reporter but alexis was passionate about video games and would stay up all night playing them. I didnt want him to get discouraged. You know . But obviously, he got discouraged about something. I just wish i knew what it was. I really do. I wish i just wish this had never happened. That same friend tells abc news, that alexis used to joke about shooting people while playing violent games. And he started missing work because of his video game habit. Obviously, something investigators will be looking into on this dayafter, still disbelief. The white house says president obama has ordered flags to be lowered to halfstaff, honoring the shooting victims. It will remain at halfstaff until sunset on friday. My building is split in half. With huge boulders in it and a tree. That fell between the two parts of the building. So, its incredible. Good morning to you, john. It was an epic and very long 19hour operation that went on all day yesterday. And well into the night. But the Costa Concordia is upright and where engineers want it to be. Resting on six underwater platforms. It took a little longer, as you said, than they had anticipated. First, they were predicting it would take 12 hours. But they had to go slower than they wanted to. You can see, they got there in the end. As you can imagine, the engineers that are working on this, complicated an unprecedented project. It took place on a ship of this magnitude. There were cheers and applause from the hundreds of salvage workers when the ship was vertical. And officials say, there was no apparent solution because that was a worry. There was no apparent solution in the waters around the ship, as a result of the operation. But the project is not over. The work is still going to go on. Experts will be working for weeks to patch up the star board side of the vessel, that was underwater, to make sure it is stable. They hope to float the vessel by spring or in the summer next year and take it to a nearby port where they can finally dismantle it. We were just looking at video of the time lapse video of what looks like it was going up millimeter by millimeter, it was so slow. What happens now to the ship . The fbi has called off the search for a second shooter. Investigators say aaron alexis was the lone gunman. Alexis managed to kill 12 people before he was shot dead by police. Eight victim, including a d. C. Police officer were hurt. Witnesses described how that shooting started. Everyone said, this is no drill. Go, go, go. Emergency exits, now. Go, go, go. Friends of aaron alexis say they cannot believe he was capable of this kind of violence. They describe him as a devout buddhist, who wanted to become a monk. New details of the killing of an unarmed man. Police say Jonathan Ferrell was shot ten times by the officer now charged in his death. The former College Football player was in a car crash and sought help from a nearby house. He was killed as police approached that responded. His mother forgives the police officer. This is not someone who posed a threat to the officers or anyone else. This is an everyday american. And that should be just as appalling and scary, frightening for the public. The officer has been charged with voluntary manslaughter. He is out on bond right now. But is expected to make a courtroom appearance today. The facility will be open today but only essential personnel report to work. 13 people were killed including the alleged gunman, 34yearold aaron alexis. Eight others were wounded. Initially they searched for a second possible shooter they now believe that the 34yearold aaron alexis acted alone. He used a valid pass to access the facility the now investigators are looking into the motive. We will have the latest in the investigation coming up in a report in a few minutes. Here is the alleged gunman, aaron alexis from brooklyn but lived in texas recently and worked for hewlettpackard as a subcontractor for the navy. He bought a shotgun legally in virginia but may have picked up an Assault Rifle and handgun yesterday. Seattle police say he was arrested in 2004 after shooting out a mans tires in what he described to police as an angerfueled blackout. His father says that aaron alexis suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder after helping with rescue attempts immediately following the september 11th attacks. He visited a buddhist temple to meditate. We spoke with his brother to law who says there were no warning signs.
