Since then, the charges have been announced all the way up to attempted murder and the questions are out there as to why and how this happened and how we can prevent it. I have to ask you because this is not the first time we have seen a political figure be targeted. In the past, we have had political as targets. Sometimes it is organized, sometimes it is not. A couple years back, she had her house surrounded by protesters in black outfits and masks. They set off fireworks and shot projectile through her living room windows and put the family and threat. Nancy pelosi herself, her house had been vandalized earlier by a group of people that the government wasnt doing enough about covid relief. But erics wall gets threats. We are seeing this on a number of levels, not just named politicians but School Board Members who are threatened or intimidated. There seems to be less and less you are doing a public job and more you are on one side of the other of anything or youre just a celebrity. Governor gavin newsom tweeted earlier today, with the undertones and not naming any one group in particular but we know he was alluding to maybe the republican party, the mega folks, that this was a direct result of some of the rhetoric and some of the political nastiness. We hear this is the result of the political nastiness and there may be some validity to that but there is also the internet. The instant backandforth and a lot of heightened things out there. David, the suspect in this case has a history. He is 42 years old and has been involved in everything from nudist demonstrations to conspiracy theories about 9 11, questioning the vote in the last president ial election. That entire circumference of the left and right meeting at the far ends of each other, is that hybrid by the political rhetoric and by the culture . Possibly. Is he mentally ill . There could be an argument made for that and probably he will be. By all means, a targeted attack on a politician is very different than the average home invasion. But nonetheless, it is something that i think people automatically assume that there has to be some level of Mental Health. Celebrities attract this type of thing. Political celebrities double it. The other question out there. You cover Violent Crime in the bay area and what are you hearing from the public on this. My phone lit up this morning from various Community Members and community leaders. Some of them in Law Enforcement. The general consensus from them and i dont know if this is because of their own beliefs but what they have seen in San Francisco and working in San Francisco is there is an extra level of scrutiny and they are hoping this is a wakeup call, the shakeup that needs to happen to address Mental Health properly or have proper Law Enforcement protocols. Everyone swarming. You see video of sfpd and the fbi and everyday people are under attack as well. Whats the difference between this and someone wielding a machete and walking down Market Street . It does elevate when it is the speaker of the houses house and her husband because that brings in the absolute structure of the american government. Nancy pelosi is well protected. If youve ever seen her pull up anywhere, there is an entire entourage. Her house does not come under that. Protect the president at the white house and when you get to the Senate President , they protect the person and not necessarily the family. That may change. When Nancy Pelosis house was vandalized a while back, Police Squad Cars there for a while and they make a threat assessment. That had gone away. If you had put a squad car in front of her house 24 7, people would say, whats going on there . Why arent i being protected . There is a balance. The governor and people have very good protection. You have covered the issues that have plagued San Francisco. Granted these are people who are elevated in the public eye. This is now a national story. It is such a pillar of perhaps what people see of what is going on every day. It is a roar shack test as to how you want to view it. You can say this is the result of the donald trump era and the heightened rhetoric and washington tone back and forth. Another person will say this is the result of what we see on the streets of San Francisco and it finally happened to somebody ever down of renown. Neither one looks good for San Francisco. This is my assessment being on the front lines of all the crime. Something i noticed, as with anything to this magnitude, there is a lot on social media and people making assumptions of what was said inside the home. We dont know many of the details yet because we saw the press conference. Not a lot was released. Its a good reminder to the public not to necessarily jump to any assumptions about the case. In these days where news moves fast and theres not a lot of filtering, you go with what you have had there will be misinformation out there. The police came into a situation where two people were arguing or tugging on a hammer. No shots were fired. Paul pelosi was injured. Did the police hold back . They did not shoot. They could have said there was a threat there. They did not. Paul pelosi is in the hospital as a result. Those are some of the traits that San Francisco is very happy there wasnt more damage done. If somebody told me that they were going to break into a house wielding a hammer and sing the song and wheres nancy and going after paul policy with it, you would say that is something out of a movie. Life these days is looking more and more like a movie and not one you particularly like the ending two. You wake up and you dont know what crazy is going to happen. Walk us through some of the back and forth here because i feel like it has been such a tugofwar. The deal was on, then it was off. Did you expect the sale to ultimately go through . Given the way the contract was initially drawn up, it looked like it would go through. He made a pretty ironclad offer. So here we are. He has made a number of changes. Yesterday we heard he fired a number of top executives from the country company. The biggest announcement that came out today, there will be some clarity but hes talking about a content Moderation Council which is shocking news for someone who has a stated purpose in buying twitter was to make it this Public Square that would be unregulated. Apparently he has learned what the other owners have learned which is unmoderated social media doesnt work very well. It was always a mystery why he thought he could buy that platform and have it work. The platforms that did that are very tiny because they are not pleasant places to be. So i think we will be entering into this phase of what is that moderation going to look like . That brings me to my next question, that musk tweeted himself that he will implement a Moderation Council . He was clear saying it would have wide, diverse viewpoints. Account reinstatements will happen. It is quite a different message from we have heard in the past. What the plan was, elon musk is the only one who knows but it is certainly news to all of us. Its not i dont like content moderation, but the claim seems to be other platforms view it as bad and the implication is that the other platforms dont. But it is not explicitly stated. Its not really accurate. It is remarkably unclear what that counsel will do. What is their authority . Their organization and their counsel would state they had final decision and so theyve never been in the public eye very much. No decisions would be made and one of the things people are wondering is will donald trump be on twitter tomorrow . Apparently he wont unless this counsel is formed in the next few hours. Donald trump wont be seven days before the midterms. It doesnt mean that he will at some point get back on the platform. You just have to wait and see. That is one of the things that people are curious about. You do study social media and the different platforms. Right now, it just feels like the distrust that people have the issues that came about with the insight dealings. Where does this play into the Bigger Picture . Twitter is an odd platform because is not used by as many people as facebook or tiktok or other platforms. The media is on twitter. In an odd way, this can be healthy if musk now views twitter as we can rebuild social media. But what would we do if we could play god and elon musk has the ability to play god with twitter now . He says i want to have as much free speech as possible but i want people to be able to factcheck very easily. He could redesign the platform in such a way that instead of trying to have algorithms and amplify certain kinds of speech or suppress other kinds of speech, there are a lot of problems with that because fact checks just dont happen as quickly as disinformation spreads. So i think it will be an opportunity for people to think about how they want social media platforms to operate. Long before social media hit the ground, we found out through social science is that people like free speech as long as its not the speech of people they disagree with. It is sort of not surprising when you get into questions of if you should regulate speech or not regulate speech. People end up with strong opinions on it if they think there is a lot of speech out there they dont like. Because social media has so much speech on it, its easy for both sides to find speech they dont like. Users cant have it all, all the things they are looking for in these platforms.
