He accused twitter of essentially Holding Back Information or lying about how many vacant spam accounts they were. They were set to go to trial october 17. Then we find out this week that theyre just going to go ahead with the deal as planned. Cries i have not heard anything about the trail being off. It is still kind of slated for that date. We are still waiting to hear back from twitter to hear if they will accept the offer. They are still kind of thinking about it. Then they will have to go through the legal headache. What what is the thinking behind why he wants to pay 5420 again . It seemed that musk and his lawyer looked at those pretrial hearings. Sure they could go through a few days of trial and then have to proceed with this. Where they could just skip all that and agree with it for now and then just kind of prevent all of that. Tell us what they said and what was the impact . Would you mind telling me which texts these were with . It is actually so much. We will actually move on and talk about what is happening now. As the ball in the court of the twitter leaders . Do they have to decide by a certain time whether or not to . This is something that we have not heard yet from twitter. If this is something they will proceed with. It is likely that everyone just kind of wants this to go to head. What comes next is elon has because of all of this back and forth has stoked distrust between him and the company and also the companys employers. A lot of twitters employees rather. What is the future of the company in the future of their roles . It will take a lot of instilling trust again in the company and direction of the company. What has this done to twitter stock and tesla stock since that is so deeply affected by the twitter deal . It has been very up and down. When elon accused twitter of pulling back information and used that as a reason why he was pulling back, twitter kind of countered and said your personal wealth has fallen. That is why you no longer want to buy this company. You have seen the stock market go up and down. This door has been all over the place as well. Tesla and twitter are two things that he is very deeply involved in. We have seen both of those companies go up and down. We will see if anything kind of evens out. The market has been a bit of a roller coaster. If elon musk does become the owner of twitter, what is likely to happen . I think he is talking about turning into and everything he has been talking about this app for a while called x. He wanted to be this big secret at we can do all of these sorts of things. That is and and where you can do all sorts of things for grocery deliveries and hailing a cab and he has mentioned when he spoke to twitter employees, there is no we chat equivalent here. We had an app that was like a super app where you can do most things. He has not explicitly stated what this app could be but we know he is not short of ambition. There is potential he could try to fold a lot of things into twitter if this deal does go through. All right. I guess we will have to wait and see. What about this . Is there a sense that he might have to clean house . Also, will employees leave . There was already a bit of uncertainty even though people have strong feelings about musk one way or the other. A lot of people were already feeling uneasy if it does go through. I would not be surprised if people validate wanted to leave or be pushed out. It has been such a roller coaster that i am sure there will be change still coming as well. What about what could happen to political speech or misinformation, a lot of bad people, president trump, what could happen under any elon musk ownership . Quincy has said that he would bring back President Donald Trump who was banned after the capitol hill riots. That is still something that we have to see what changes he could bring and whether users and employees would agree with any of those changes. Of course, musk is a businessman. How might he do that with twitter . Subscriptions . What are the options there . One of the big things they are saying is and revenue is down. Twitter has been trying to pitch twitter blue. That is the five dollars a month sub scription service. It has the feature of being able to edit to meet. That is rolling out in countries right now but you can only have that under twitter blue. I am sure that elon would push that Subscription Service even more. He is antiad revenue so he would probably she was to push Subscription Service even more. He really has this huge vendetta against bots. I think he would definitely put more resources toward tackling that. That is something that he mentioned really early on. Joining us live is Christina Hale from the Uc Berkeley College of Environmental Design to talk about the connection to a toxic threat. Especially in west oakland. Thank you for joining us. We dont talk about this threat it involves toxins in the soil. That is right. Everything people use, we spill at some point. Over time, we spell. There has been a lot of industry in west oakland and many other parts of the bay along with military sites. In addition to west oakland, what are some of the other places in the bay area where we have these industrial sites where the toxins vary . Hunters point in San Francisco has been a controversial site with a lot of pollution left over from the navy. The wholesale shoreline of richmond has a couple of superfund sites. East palo alto has some, east oakland. San jose, palo alto, marin city, the residents suspect there is undocumented contamination. When sea levels rise, how do they not expose those taxes for us. Until your work, few people have actually looked at the Environmental Health and social equity applications. People of color were often confined to live near industrial contamination. What kind of damage can they cause . Miscarriages. There are many potential impacts on the human body. Not in the waters of the water supply but a more subtle impact. The water that has contamination in it. We probably realize to the problem potentially, what can we do to prevent it. Is that work being done . Unfortunately, we have done a lot of capping. Like putting an umbrella in the polluted soil. This toxic threat is a result of the legacy of racism. And i miss Margaret Gordon thought about this in west oakland. It could be a component but there are so many other ways families lost out because they were prevented from owning homes for example. I could think of this as a component of reparations. It would certainly be justice to prevent more children from being exposed. Berkeley is part of the toxic tides project. Tell us about that project. That is my colleague, rachel and some other faculty at ucla. The salt water was moving onto the land. That was a wonderful project and what might happen here is just a few inches of rise in the groundwater. Today is california clean air day. The state whatever it is intended to teach us all more about our air quality, celebrate successes and create opportunities to Work Together for continued progress. When it comes to air pollution, we can all do our part. Joining us live now is the developing and engagement director for the coalition here. What are we supposed to do today . Right now, millions of people across the state are taking a pledge. That pledge is to do at least one thing for clean air. Whether that is taking public transit, air filter in your home , planting a tree, there are a bunch of ways that people can do their part for clean energies. You do divided up here. Lets talk about how if youre in one of these groups, or can approach it. What about starting with kids . What can they do . There is one item on the kids pledge and the adult pledge. Particularly at elementary school, one problem is the line to pick up kids. It can start as early as a halfhour early. We have all seen the gas prices. It boggles my mind. One of the things that we have on the kids pledge is clean air day stories was a middle School Student that printed out tshirts to say that idling gets you nowhere. That is so true in both the literal and figurative sense. I did always wonder about that. We are all parts here. Kids are still running around. That is not just a drop in the bucket, is it . No. Idling contributes to ozone majorly. It is a big problem. It is just one small thing we can all do. Our transportation sector is the biggest and Greenhouse Gas emissions in the state. It is also a source of ozone. When we get people to think about their role in that sector and that includes idling, it includes live in the car at home, includes swapping your existing car out for an electric vehicle, then we are doing a lot of good. That is why we ask people to do that. Government agencies at partners, how are they ensuring clean air . One of the things i loved about california and clean air day is i dont know what people may think of in terms of the companies that are plugged into the effort to improve air quality but that list is very diverse. We have everyone from Scooter Companies to transit agencies to bakeries who are doing vegan goods for the day to some people you might think of like electrify america, or others. Everybody is plugging in in their own way. One of the people on the list, a Construction Company just put out a great article on some of the things they have implemented. They dont allow for any kind of idling among their subcontractors at the construction site. They announce that on clean air day. In addition to investments in electric vehicles. The number one thing we are asking of all of these entities is to engage either their employees, their writers or their customers, joining them and taking that pledge. We have a little bit of a competition going which is great. It drives engagement. We are proud to see that diversity in organizations taking part. It is well documented that poor air quality affects our health. So many serious illnesses from Heart Disease to lung cancer, other chronic problems. I want to ask you, we talk about how rising sea levels will increase the toxin exposures to people in low income neighborhoods more. Is there a greater impact on people in low income neighborhoods . Yes. So many things in this world, air quality is not equal opportunity. Low income communities of color tend of color tend to bear the brunt in the state. If you look activities like west oakland or parts of richmond, they tend to bear similar statistics. A lot of that comes back to the transportation choices that we made. The one thing we have in common across all these communities is delving to transportation. Whether it is transportation from our refineries or because we are built right next to a freeway, that is the biggest factor. I know that is why your group has been supporting the ban of new gas powered vehicles in california by the year 2035. That is something that is a step in that direction. But before we go, i just want you to tell me what you think are the latest efforts that are the biggest successes in terms of improving our air quality. We have come a long way. There is no doubt. The California Resources board announcing numeral electric vehicles by 2030 is an acute step in the right direction. I will just talk about what we need to do. We really need to get people to try transit again. That ridership has fallen tremendously. I want to ask everybody if you have gotten away from it to give it a try again this week.
