Bay area researchers believe they have been able to roll back the effects of a devastating disease for the first time. And their method could offer new hope to the more than 5 million americans who suffer from alzheimers. Heres abc7 news anchor ama daetz with the details. Particularly when i was driving i would get off the freeway at the wrong exit. The woman in this video provided by the Buck Institute in novato doesnt want to reveal her identity because she suffered from early stage dementia. Last year she joined a small group of patients undergoing what researchers at the buck hope will be a revolutionary new way to treat the disease. What we found is that when you make and store memories over your life, there is a balance. Dr. Dale brettison studied the pathways in our brain that contribute to the process of both making and forgetting memories. Hes a complex system of proteins and amina acids that he believes can go out of balance. In a landmark study in 2006 he essentially rebalanced the molecules of the brains of mice that had been genetically engineered to have alzheimers. In a followup test of a water maze, the mice showed no signs of memory loss. How do you achieve that same result . He began by carefully documenting diet and lifestyle factors known to affect the brains signaling network and ultimately identified 36 key areas. Working from that list they created specific regiments for each patient. Examples include eliminating eliminating simple carbohydrates, gluten and eating more vegetables, taking vitamin d2, sleeping a minimum of 7 to 8 hours and fasting a minimum of 12 hours between dinner and breakfast. When we do that, we see big effects on memory. The Clinical Trial included just ten patients. And unlike blinded drug trials, the results are observational. Of the ten, nine patients reported a significant improvement in their memory and an actual reversal of symptoms linked to alzheimers. More than half were able to return to work. My thinking, cognitive ability and ability to do work, ability to do reports, i am back into the stream of things. The strongest criticism is that the regimen can be complex and difficult for many patients to follow the help of a caregiver. Still, he believes it could mark a turning point in the way researchers approach alzheimers. When i found out that a number of the people, six out of the ten, back at work full time, i said thats hard to fake. Ama daetz, abc7 news. The doctor said each patient is run through a battery of tests and the regimen is fay take lord, depending on the results. The Buck Institute team is now working to secure funding forfourth a largescale trial. Still ahead, rarely seen images of what makes the bay area what it is. A rarely seen exhibit. Once he got to know the people, us, and started talking to us, the community welcomed him with open arms. He earned the trust and friendship of people like 83yearold mary booker. Weve had enough of all the negative stuff, and its high time that somebody saw something that has maintained this community over the years. It is a tightknit community where there are changes. We need rain and we want rain and now we have a winter spare the air day because the ridge of High Pressure has aloud for the stagnate air mass to get more stagnate. And pushing down on the atmosphere. The High Pressure has trapped the pollutants closest to the surface, especially in the north bay. And thats why it is illegal to burn today. But heres the fog and low cloudiness up against the coast. And we do have a little bit of shallow fog. You can see it there just over the span of the Golden Gate Bridge. This is upwards of about 500 feet, keeping the coast cloudy. And parts of the bay. But still with a slight offshore flow in the higher elevations. We are looking at a warm day today once again 70s and 80s widespread. 57 San Francisco right now. Good morning oakland. 60 for you n the low 60s morgan hill. It has been the same old, same old. But we will look for changes in the days ahead. No more delays at sfo as the fog lifts. But we do have the air quality concern today. But as the sea breeze kicks up tomorrow, and then the south wind gets underway on tuesday, veterans day, things will really begin to mix up. Then we have a front headed our way Late Wednesday into thursday. But a beach hazard statement needs to be pass aid long from the National Weather service late tonight through Tuesday Morning. The northwesterly swells will be kicking up with the northwestfacing beaches, especially ocean beach. But the Sonoma County coast, as well as monterey bay. So some strong rip currents a possibility here all because theres been a lot of activity out here in the pacific. But closer to home its High Pressure still capping the lid on the atmosphere but weakening just enough today to bring us the fog back to the marin coast, and the rain north of us. That wont make it to the south. Another system will bring the rain midweek. 67 in the northern sierra and mid70s yosemite. The temperatures trimmed back by about 3 or 4 degrees. We have the dense fog from the central coast, monterey, all the way down to los angeles today. But heres what we are waiting for. Its the weather system that will arrive through the overnight hours on wednesday. Notice the darker shade of blue here indicates anywhere from perhaps. 4 to maybe a halfinch but the rest of the bay area a couple hundredth to about a tenth inch of rain. Its not a big one but possibly another storm system headed our way into the next week so we can hope. Heres oakland this afternoon. Low 70s for the game against the broncos, and the highs today ranging from the upper 60s Half Moon Bay, 74 downtown oakland, mid60s fremont with 60 antioch and 81 out by the delta. The accuweather seven day forecast, finally no more 80s to speak of and we will trend down more toward more average temperatures by veterans day. 60s and 70s and more cloud cover wednesday with that weather system headed our way on thursday.
