Good morning, matt. Yeah, the overlay of the National Weather service, a red flag warning for the Higher Elevations of the north and east bay and Santa Cruz Mountains over 1,000 feet. We are looking at wind gusts at mt. Diablo over 45 miles an hour. A little shaky camera here but the winds are translating the dryer, warm are air down to the surface. We are looking at low 70 70s in fairfield. 78 live more. And the relative humidity below 25 right now. Very dry air today. Its a oneday event. As we go through the next couple hours, notice the winds highest in the upper elevations over the east bay hills and by later on in the day they do dial back but be careful out there. Plenty of sunshine today. We have widespread 70s on the coast. 60s San Francisco. Upper 80s in the santa clara valley. Mid80s around the bay. And a look at the rain coming our way, as well, in the next update. Matt. All right. Thank you, lisa. We begin with developing news about the ebola crisis. A dallas Healthcare Worker and the first case of the disease being transmitted in the u. S. The woman in texas had extended contact at a dallas hospital with come mass eric duncan, ebola patient in texas last week. She provided care during duncans second visit. We dont know what occurred in the care of the index patient, the original patient in dallas. But at some point there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection. The doctors say this may have occurred when the worker took off her protect itch clothing because if its not done properly, an infection may result. Officials are trying to calm any fierce of contracting the virus. You cannot contract ebola other than from the bodily fluids of a symptomatic ebola victim. You cannot contract ebola by walking by people in the street or by being around contacts who are not symptom attic. Theres nothing about this case that changes that basic premise of science. Meanwhile, another level of defense against the ebola virus is in place. New screening measures are underway at new yorks Jfk International errant. Four other airports will begin screening this week. They are using notouch thermometers to take the temperature of travelers from ebola travelers from africa. Anyone with a fever will be closely scrutinized. The abc news chief health and mel editor, dr. Richard besser, grease there was a breach of protocol. They will look to see what happened in the hospital to allow this to occur. If it was someone who met him when he first came into the hospital, thats one thing. But if he was part of the care team, it really throws into question the cdc recommendations that any hospital can take care of a patient with ebola, they just need an isolation room and certainly equipment. So far no worked on a motive or suspect. Two families in watsonville are grieving to morning. Friday bullets took the lives of two people, one just four years old. Lisa amin gulezian was at a vigil in honor of the victims. Candles, tears and emotion. They are mourning the loss of two lives, a fouryearold girl 34yearold ramone. One man is in custody and investigators are looking for several others involved in a horrific shooting. Police call it a gang shooting. The intended target was ramone, but he wasnt the only one hurt. The two victims were in this area for two very different reasons. Ramone worked at this motel when the shooting started. You can see its just a few steps away from this back office. This where the fouryearold was resting while her grandparents closed up the restaurant that they owned. You can see a bullet hole went right through the window. The little girl died at the hospital. Someone left pink flowers and a princess balloon outside the fish house bar and grill. While one family grieved privately, another made a public plea. This has to stop. How many more lives have to die . Even if everybody were [indiscernible crying] police hope anyone with information about the murders will come forward. In watsonville, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. A registered sex offender is in jail, suspected of shooting video of the dress or under the dress of a fouryearold girl in a park. This man was spotted by a walmart Security Guard using a small digital camera to take pictures under the girls dress. He admitted to the walmart guard that he was filming and a he was a registered sex offender. Its fleet week and the blue angels are back. [jet noises] the lack of jets last year left a visible and audible void in fleet week. Yesterday, as it will today, the familiar roaring filled the sky to the delight of people that came to the waterfront to watch. The maneuvers are so fast, its hard to keep up. The amphipius assault ship is the first in its class. Tiffany wilson has this story. To stand next to the uss america is to be humbled. The bay area takes on a controversy involving the mayor of st. Louis. Californians are discovering the real risks behind prop 46. About 50 protesters briefly conducted a sitin in front of a store. They were told to move by the police. Police arrived in full riot gear. Protesters linked arms to block the entrance. Police tried to move demonstrators away. Teargas was launched, causing more chaos. This as Michael Browns mother led a prayer vigil only hours earlier before several hundred protesters marched through the streets of nearby ferguson, ending at police headquarters. Officers stood their ground, even as they were repeatedly taunted. Its what organizers call ferguson, october. Thousands descending on downtown ferguson, demanding accountability for what they say is racial injustice. People have protests like this. Hundreds of people in the streets, closing down traffic. The protesters we talked to were like this person, a st. Louis native outraged by two recent shootings of young black men by officers. If you are white, you have one shot, if you are black, you get another. It sparked a National Debate that played out all weekend long across the city. Emotions are raw and hope is fleeting. Theres a lot of racism. And i think it would be for the better but i think its been pretty weird. Ferguson, missouri. Firefighters are getting the upper hand of a fire burning east of sacramento. The fire along interstate 80 is now 67 contained. Its destroyed five homes and burned nearly 500 acres. The fire year Yosemite Park is now 54 contained. The entrance closed because of the fire is expected to reopen today. Police arrested a 24yearold man on suspicion of starting the fire that destroyed the town of weed. The flames quickly burn through a neighborhood and destroyed 150 structures, most of them houses. The giants, once again turning this month into an turning this month into an orange october. Diablo had a wind gust of 47 miles an hour. Already the air is drying out with the relative humidity just about 14 around livermore, 21 out by the delta. Mt. Tam looks pretty glassy. So at the surface we arent looking at those gusty winds. In fact, we are looking at the warm air allowing for the temperatures to climb so quickly this morning. Look at half moon bay, 80 degrees. It was 61 yesterday, going for a high today of 78. And looking at all the numbers in the 60s from the San Carlos Airport to san jose. Maybe a beach day, but we have some big swells and dangerous surf with the possibility of rip currents here, all the way down through santa cruz and northward. We are looking at 70s by the delta. 78 in livermore with 63 in concord. Mid60s for santa rosa and napa. We will look for the warmup to be brief, shortlived. But since yesterday we have warmed anywhere from 5 could 21 degrees in the 24hour change here. It will be a warm afternoon with high fire danger. A look from our sutro tower camera where we have all the fair skies. And a brief warmup. It will be back, though, because we are looking at temperatures plummeting by tuesday and a chance of showers, bringing us not a whole lot of rain. But maybe a chance to at least get a splash here or there. The beach hazard statement right on through tonight with the large northwesterly swells, 11 to 13 feet and the possibility of those sneaker waves so be very careful out there. We are looking at a gorgeous day today. Lots of sunshine. Thats the flip side. And temperatures as much as 10 degrees above average. We should see about 7070 San Francisco this time of win. 79 toward the afternoon. Heres the culprit. Its the big area of High Pressure bringing us the warmth today. It it has built in to the north of us. Thats bringing the red flag warning up to the western side of the sierra. But its this area of low pressure and the cold front thats going to cloud us up, drop the temperatures for a little bit of rain come tuesday and wednesday. Maybe a tenth. You can see it right here pushing into the north bay. And then as the system pushes on through, we are dry behind it, and another computer model wants to give us a chance of rain for friday. We will wait and see if that pans out. In the meantime we look at high temperatures. Mostly inside the bay in the schmid upper 80s. A warm day today san jose and fremont. 90 concord, 83 san mateo. This morning investigators in maine will reconstruct a halloween ride after a hay ride accident that injured 22 people. It happened in the dark last night. A vehicle crash on a hayride. Multiple injuries. Overnight a funfilled hayride outside of portland, maine, ended in real panic. Many just. The vehicle lost control, went down a hill and rolled. Officials say passengers were thrown from the out of control ride. Rescuers rushing 24 victims to area hospitals. Two of them airlifted with serious injuries. Multiple people with broken bones. Neck injuries, back injuries. The county Sheriffs Office said approximately 30 riders were on board. The Harvest Hills gauntlet. They were expecting a lighthearted thrill like on the website. But along the night the vehicle missed a sharp turn on a heavily wooded trail. Missed the curve and went into the wood line. Looked like he jackknifed on the tree. What is rarely discussed, but again is demonstrated here again today, is the reality of it all. We can certainly elevate the 15 men of valor whose names will be added to the wall of heroes by pledging today and pledging every day that they will always be part of our hearts, and that their example will never be forgotten. As firefighters continue to battle wildfires across the state, people say they are praying for them, as well. Meaning even paying tribute to the most recent firefighter to give his life to protect others. We are especially mindful of our friend, our brother, Geoffrey Craig hunt, the cal fire pilot who was killed while performing his duties, while protecting those that he was called to serve. Like the other brothers and sisters on the wall behind me, we have a bond with them that is eternal. We are also here to let you know that you are our family. A young orphan girl in san jose is throwing a Birthday Party today in san jose, but its not just about cake and ice cream. Chris just turned 11 last week, but shes already helping children all over the world. She was adopted from an orphanage in the philippines and is on a crusade to bring smiles on the faces of workers and or fans everywhere. She founded a nonprofit. She sends treats to the or fans. For the record, thats a planet that orbits a sun other than our own. And for kelsey, and philip, such discoveries are made with the help of the Lick Observatory, perched in the mountains east of san jose. The views and data from its telescopes are routed to their Observation Center at the university of california. Our screens are active here. Astronomy professor, alex, oversees much of the research, but lately hes spent as much time searching for something thats can be nearly as hard to locate as a far away planet, money. The professor said he and his fellow astronomers were stunned by a decision by umbrella c administrators, choosing to funnel money toward newer and more modern telescopes. This is where we can do longterm programs that really involve students and people who just developing their careers in science and technology. The university of california has had a facility at the lick conservatory since its construction on mt. Hamilton more than a century ago. While it doesnt boast the powerful telescopes of competing sites like in hawaii, he argues better access can sometimes mean more to a budding astronomer than raw power. What it can do is follow things around. We can get many, many nights consecutively or over the course of a year at lick to look for planets orbiting other stars are or to follow how an exploding star evolves. In a statement to abc7 news. The u. C. Provost office said it , lick observe story, to has never been on the Cutting Block and no one is suggesting lick be shut down, only that there be a different funding model. Yesterday they transformed ocean beach into a field of vegies, fruits, meats and sweets. Food, glorious food. They had sandcastle creations. The event has raised more than 200,000 so far. Rooftop elementary in San Francisco won best in show for its candyland design. Heading to the beach today it will be pretty nice and warm, huh . Yeah, santa cruz 87. I grew up down the street. It was nothing. Nowhere to hang out. No coffee shop. Thats why he said he moved away from Jack London Square. But now hes having regrets. Every club is full, the bars are full, the restaurants are full. It is the coolest place and we dont even go to the city anymore. We hang out here. The plank is a new 50,000 square foot luxury bowling alley, restaurant and bar with live music. Even outdoor bocci ball courts. The grand opening with m. C. Hammer on hand signifies the willingness to invest 7 million in a city with a reputation for high crime. Getting past the surface and actually spending time in the community, thats what encouraged us and why we made the decision to come here. Its not necessarily all what you hear on the news. The city claims overall crime in oakland is actually down from last year. Plank owner, mike, says he found a thriving, untapped market that needed a large entertainment needed a large entertainment venue like plank. Weve never really tried. Weve never really put our money into hotel development, large venues. We have a Small Convention Center for a city of our size. Now city tourism Officials Say oakland is making an honest effort and its hoping plank will enhance its campaign to will enhance its campaign to attract more conventions and corporate business. If you plan to head to the beach today, lifeguards suggest being very careful. A storm in alaska is generating swells along the beaches. It brings big dangers like rip currents and sneaker waves. Im sure a lot of people are heading to the beach so be careful if you do want to get in the water. Maybe just play in the sand today like that little girl was doing right at the edge of the water. It will be 10 degrees warmer today at the coast than yesterday. Lots of mid70s. Upper 80s in santa cruz. This shows the red flag warning in effect for the upper elevations. Heres a look receipt now at santa cruz where numbers are in the mid60s. Its a nice start to the day. Although the flip side of that is the atmosphere is so, so dry. So we will be looking at the relative humidity in our inland valleys, 10, 15 . Right now the north wind allowing napa to climb to 77 degrees. 64 petaluma. 73 by the delta. Its been in the 70s since about 6 00 this morning. In livermore, 78. Now this is all due to the offshore flow. It is going to be a very warm day out there. And with those offshore winds, things are really going to heat up into the 80s and 90s. So a quick flip of the map here. I want to show what you can expect in terms of high temperatures, where we should be for this time of year. In fact, we are looking at numbers anywhere from 15 degrees above average.
