This is the system that brought rain to the bay area. Still spreading rain into the Sierra Nevada. Its weakening and were looking at the rotation around this area of low pressure. That has spread lightning as close as napa last night. But for the bay area, its all about the widespread stratus locally. We still have some smoke in the Sierra Nevada drifting into the mountains while our stable atmosphere will clear on out and give us more sunshine today. So a mixture of clouds. Heres a look at the sierra where it looks pretty gray out there. Well see temperatures a little cooler today, inland, upper 70s to upper 80s and the warmest inland valleys. Upper 60s in San Francisco. 70 in oakland and around the bay, partly cloudy skies in the mid and upper 70s. Rain is coming as fall arrives. Well talk about it coming up. Carolyn . Lisa, thank you. Developing news out of concord. Police are investigating an apparent stabbing as what is believed to be a house party. The party was near virginia lane but the investigation quickly moved to Market Street near the 242 onramp. Police handcuffed at least two people and placed them in a squad car. We have a call into the Concord Police for more details. This morning, San Francisco police are investigating a deadly accident where a driver hit and killed a pedestrian. It happened at an intersection said to be one of the most dangerous in the city. Abc 7 News Reporter sergio has the story. Reporter the driver was 40yearold Calixto Dilinila was arrested for failing to yield to a pedestrian. The victim, an elderly woman, died at the scene. We know shes an asian female and shes from the neighborhood and so were trying to figure out contact family and that sort of thing. Reporter one resident who knew the victim said she lived in the building just feet from where she lived. Where did she live . Up here. Reporter the building is a Senior Living facility and this corner is often packed with elderly residents boarding buses and cars that regularly dart by. One resident who didnt want to use his name says he has to be very careful here at all times of the day. How dangerous is the intersection . For old people, its dangerous. Reporter why . Because they cant walk fast. See . Reporter and what do the car dos . They dont stop. Reporter police have been trying to enforce Traffic Safety in this whole area. According to investigators, its not clear where the yellow suv made contact with the pedestrian in the crosswalk. They are looking for witnesses to help them with this case. In San Francisco, abc news. This morning, contracounty sheriff detectives say there may be additional victims of a suspected child molester. 39yearold Ronald Deguzman is accused of sexually assaulting three boys. Hes been charged with 17 counts of child molestation. Detectives believe deguzman contacted his victims through churches in east and central contra costa county. A man is in custody suspected of trying to kill a woman in her 70s. Berkeley police say the man attacked the woman Late Afternoon yesterday. He took off when she screamed for help. Officers arrived and were able to track down the suspect based on a description given to them by witnesses. The woman was rushed to the hospital with lifethreatening injuries. Oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting. It happened shortly after 7 00 last night. Police say the victim was shot on hillside street and then taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators have not made any arrests or identified any suspects. This is the 56th homicide of the year in oakland. Richmond police are on the lookout for a man who killed two men. The shooting at 5 30 yesterday evening at fourth street. Thats a block from Lincoln Elementary school. One victim died at the scene and the other was rushed to the hospital where he died. No arrests have been made. Police have not released information about a suspect. For the first time were hearing from the father of a young man shot and killed Bay Police Officer in richmond. A week ago today, the father, rick perez, mourned the loss of his son with family and friends at nickel park yesterday afternoon. Richard perez was killed last sunday outside of a liquor store. Police say he was drunk and tried to grab the officers gun. The officer shot perez three times. His father says it did not need to happen. I raised my son well. He had respect for the law. He was always guilty of one thing that night and that was being intoxicated. I know we need the police. I know we need stuff like that. There are criminals in the world. My son wasnt one of them. Police say they have Video Evidence proving the shooting was justified. Check out that photo from San Francisco. That is a parking control officer on the hood of a car. Police say he was writing a ticket near alamo square when the driver got in the car and tried to run him down. The officer hopped onto the roof clinging to it for several blocks. Police eventually pulled over the driver on Market Street. Shes been charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The officer was not hurt. Napa residents feeling tense from the earthquake and get things smoothed out this afternoon as the citys emotional rebuilding fair. Plenty of residents experienced tension, anxiety, even posttraumatic stress from last months 6. 0 magnitude quake. The fair will offer massages, yoga, even behavioral therapy for your pets. Its all free. It begins this afternoon at 1 00 as the Crosswalk Community church in napa. Crews are waiting until it is safe to see how many buildings were damaged in the king fire. So far its burned near 82,000 acres. Its only 10 contained. It has now spread into Tahoe National forest. According to the San Francisco chronicle, organizers of iron man lake tahoe have canceled this mornings Second Annual 140mile race because of smoke from the fire. 2800 people have been evacuated from that area. The fire isnt quite here to this area yet but we have lines in place, hose lines in place that are in front of the houses. So if the fire does come up here, we have a buffer between where the fire is and where it wants to go. Crews are also standing by to set backfires. Those are the carefully controlled fires designed to burn brush and vegetation so theres nothing left to fuel the wildfire when it arrives. In Madera County, crews are making progress in the courtney fire thats now 97 contained and about 320 acres. All evacuation orders have been lifted but 56 buildings have been either damaged or destroyed. Well, we have a lot of low clouds here in the bay area. You say delays at sfo . Thats right. Under an hour. But those will clear and well be looking at a nice, sunny day here in emeryville with highs at 70 degrees. Still, lots of clouds. In the central valley, police have caught four of five inmates who escaped from jail. Authorities say the men broke out of the Madera County jail friday night. They were being held on charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery. Four of the men were captured last night. One man, 29yearold roel soliz remains at large. Into this morning, north koreas state run news agency is saying an imprisoned california man wanted to become the second edward snowden. He was sentenced to six years hard labor last week. The agency in a rather confusing statement said that hes part of the antiunited states north korea Human Rights Campaign and said that he plans to tell the North Koreans he has secret information about military bases in south korea. Similar to snowden revealing nsa secrets. President obama will address the United NationsSecurity Council this week about cutting off the financial lifeline for terrorists in iraq and syria. Its all part of the Ongoing Campaign by the administration to involve the International Community in the fight against isis. The president says he will not put american troops on the ground in this fight but critics say thats the only way to win. As you might have just seen on this week, the u. S. Ambassador to the United Nations begs to differ. And there are troops on the ground. There are iraqi troops, kurdish troops and syrian troops fighting at great expense and sacrifice, fighting on two fronts. So we think, again, the strategy can succeed and, most importantly, that we have the greatest military in the world. They believe that. How long will this take . I think the president has said it will be over several years. And also the u. S. Will not fly air strikes over syria alone even though no other country has yet agreed to do so. Reporter nbc 7 news. Cal trans has reopened a tenmile stretch of highway 37 almost 36 hours ahead of schedule. Highway 37 was slated to be closed all weekend, from vallejo to the point for maintenance and repaving but the work has been completed. The roadway reopened at 8 00 last night. Crews worked all day yesterday digging out cracked portions of the highway, repaving them, leveling it off. Highway 37 is still scheduled to be closed again next weekend for more maintenance. And in addition, cal trans says it will be closed at night between monday, september 29th, and friday, october 3rd. Well, as fall arrives, so does rain. Miss argen is here to talk about the weather. And cooler temperatures as well. Maybe trees are changing in your neighborhood, at the higher elevations. And yes, its time. Lingering showers continue in the northern sierras down by mammoth lake, reporting some rain. And we will see some of the wraparound moisture continue in the mountains through ts evening hours with a possibility of thunderstorms. Its been rainy and its all because of this area of low pressure that brought the rain to the bay area last thursday. Its trying to exit california into nevada. And it will do that slowly but with it still the moisture. You can kind of pick out the low down here and around it we have the clouds and some of the cloud cover is blowing off into the Sierra Nevada but then we have smoke on top of it. So truckee reporting just a quarter mile of visibility. Next area of low pressure in the gulf alaska, this is what will come wednesday into thursday and bring rain down the north coast of california as far south as the central coast. And right now, here are the higher cloud tops from the thunderstorms and the rain in the mountains. But were also looking at some of that smoke from tahoe drifting into the Sacramento Valley and also Sacramento Valley could see showers and thunderstorms. So its smoky and somewhat rainy in the sierra and along the bay area we have the stratus, the low clouds. So that will give way to a really nice afternoon and this shot, you can see how low it is. But it is extensive as its under 2,000 feet. Were beginning to see sunshine in concord. But San Francisco, 64, mild in oakland, its 65. 63 at morgan hill and san jose right now, still pretty gray with temperatures ranging from the low 60s in santa rosa. By the dealt ta, its sunny and windy. 67, though. The winds will dial back and well get into a more routine afternoon for the last full day of summer. Cloudy skies in santa cruz right now. Temperatures back into the 70s here. So with the overcast start, well get the clouds to slowly part and look for a pretty nice day today. Then were going to warm up before we cool down and usher in that rain maker. So here it is. The rain clouds from this area of low pressure, thats moving on. High pressure is actually going to build the next couple of days in response to this system queuing up. Well look for the rain to arrive early on thursday. You can see it here slicing through the extreme northern california. Theres the front and then the low has to move on through keeping showers going until friday. 79 in san jose today. Look for upper 70s. Palo alto, cloudy skies. Coast, partly cloudy in San Francisco at 68. Mid70s for santa rosa today and napa. Were looking at cloudy skies in san jose at 63. Morgan hill is at 63 and 64 in San Francisco. Delays still with us. So low clouds and fog locally around the bay. That has allowed for the marine layer to be persistent. That remains today so we have a cloudy coast. Upper 60s around the marin county coastline. More sunshine with temperatures in the 70s and 80s today. Slightly cooler inland. That changes. Well warm up when a cold front heads our way with more fall temperatures and rain. Carolyn . Lisa, thank you. Road blocks have been taken down where a suspected cop killer was believed to be hiding. But as abcs Lindsey Janice reports, residents are asked to have extreme caution. Reporter this morning, the massive manhunt for eric frein. Tactical teams racing to the scene of a potential sighting. Police are using helicopters to thermal cameras and, on foot, officers in full camouflage, proceeding with extreme caution. The main thing he has in his favor is, its his backyard. Not the polices backyard. Reporter theres no telling how long frein will be able to keep this up. I dont think anyone really knows how this guy is hiding himself but clearly if this was a premeditated shooting, then he had a game plan. Reporter as frein has evaded capture for a ninth day, a reminder of how long others lasted before him, like the lapd officer who used his inside knowledge to stay on the run for ten days. Police eventually finding him in an empty cabin. Dorner shooting himself once surrounded. And eric rudolph on the run for five years, hiding out in empty houses in his native mountains of north carolina. Police eventually capturing him in 2003 near the Grocery Store dumpster he had been feeding himself from. Pennsylvanias poconos mountains are more occupied. The roles of the homes in the area can play is they are vacation homes so they are locked and loaded with food, with gear, with fuel, probably with firearms, with ammunition. The bay area is taking part at oaklands lake merit park amphitheater. Thousands will call for immediate measures to halt and reverse Climate Change. They are pushing for a global agreement to reduce pollution and demand a world where good jobs, clean air, and a healthy environment. It begins at 2 00 at oaklands lake merit. San franciscos aquatic cove and beach is closed due to a fuel spill. Swimmers noticed oil in the water yesterday morning and then tar balls began washing up on the beach. The coast guard is saying that the fuel came from the world war ii liberty ship jeremiah o obrien. These photos show swimmers cleaning oil off of their feet and swim caps and goggles. They will resume the cleanup today. Oaklands city council will sign off on a new 1 billion, tenyear garbage contract. The contract was awarded to an oakland company, California Waste Solutions. The company that held the contract for decades, texasbased waste management, then filed two lawsuits to get it back. Officials at California Waste Solutions decided to share the contract, sparing the city millions of dollars in legal costs. Dozens of dog owners have had to euthanize their pets because of a deadly, very contagious virus that appears to be spreading. Dozens of dogs in new jersey have died in the last month from the parvo virus. Its often fatal to dogs. It can be transmitted by anything that comes into contact with contaminated feces. Even an innocent walk in the grass can transfer it to a healthy dogs paws or fur. Animals are stepping in it and its exactly the way its transmitted. Vets say the easiest way to prevent the parvo virus is to make sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations. Mans best friend is proving to be a good companion for people going through the often frightening criminal justice system. I got a first look at the golden retriever thats bringing a sense of calm to San Franciscos courthouse. Its a story youll see only on abc 7 news. Reporter its his First Official week at work at San Franciscos first courthouse therapy dog. And favor has already been a stress reliever for some of the most vulnerable having to testify in criminal justice proceedings. Anything that we can do in order to facilitate the process and help our victims and help our witnesses come in and provide information, help us get to the bottom of the truth, whatever that is, its useful. Reporter child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, this golden retriever is highly trained to offer support during forensic interviews and other steps in criminal investigations. His handler works with the d. A. s office of Victim Services and describes how one girl reacted with the pooch by her side. She was petting his ear area and providing information that the officer was requesting. Reporter favor comes compliments of a bay area nonprofit, canine companions for independence. The dogs are socialized for a year and a half by volunteers and we found out that favor got his training from abc 7 newscast director jerry sandy and his family. Going off to college. Its the most gratifying thing to know that somebody in need can be helped. Eventually the d. A. Would like to see favor allowed in the courtrooms when victims are testifying. But for now, hell stick to therapy duties in the interview rooms and the hallways. This dogs got the magic touch, not just with witnesses but many of those who see him in the courthouse. Good boy. And the District Attorney says favor is available to both prosecutors and the public. The District Attorney would like to get two more dogs from canine companions for independence. A third of the Company Speaks spanish. We picked this school because 70 of the kids. Reporter the company will support the school for a minimum of one year. Already, zoom has donated 500 books to the school library. This is the principal here. Its been a godsend and hes going to be helping us with guided reading books as far as we agreed on, right . Whatever you want. Human resources can come in and help do things like recess monitoring or readalouds in the class. It really makes a difference. Reporter the superintendent and mayor of San Francisco have been working for more than a year to get Tech Companies involved in the Public School system. I never want to hear again, really, a teacher or a principal say, ive got to reach in my own pocket to buy pencils and papers for these kids. I only need 1. If you think of our students as the fun team, if you will, youre starting to build that internal engine that is going to be the teacher employee. Well, lisa argen is here to talk about changes in the upcoming week. Yes. Right now heres the live doppler 7 hd. Rain north of lake tahoe and very smoky conditions here in lake tahoe. The winds are socked in there. A low pressure area to the south is allowing for the rotation. The rain is the good news. Showers and thunderstorms once again in the northern and southern sierra and around the san joaquin area and Sacramento Valley. We have a possibility of smoky skies but as that area of low pressure exits into nevada, this area of low pressure and associated cold front will visit us and bring rain come thursday and friday. And right now the models are looking like some decent rain. The whiter, brighter cloud tops represent the rain activity. Now we have the smoke thats been drifting westward and today the flow will be with a moderate sea breeze and that will allow for our skies to be much better compared to what is going on at lake tahoe. Still, it may be a little hazy and well look for the stratus, once again, to hug the shoreline. Were starting out where the low clouds and fog continue to sit. Temperatures are mild. 63. Morgan hill and half moon bay, 65 in oakland. Still delays at sfo. A little bit brighter in and around parts of south bay but still overcast for san jose. Its sunny in concord. Getting sunnier at 65. Its windy by the delta. Remember, weve got the area of low pressure not that far off. High pressure off the coast making for stronger pressure gradients in the higher elevations. 66 in novato. Back into the 70s with sunshine. The temperatures will come up in the days ahead before things really get interesting come thursday. There we go in the higher, wider brighter cloud tops. The High Pressure is off the coast and that will offer a couple of nice days. Remember, this is the last day of summer. We get into fall tomorrow night and then here comes the cold front. On thursday, the low has to come through keeping showers going on friday. Maybe about a quarter of an inch of rain. The showers and storms have cooler numbers. Lake tahoe, 67. 91 in yosemite. Well look for temperatures to be pretty comfortable for the as today. Maybe that will help. Around the bay, highs in the mid70s for san mateo. 79, san jose. 75 in santa rosa. A little cooler than average inland with some low and maybe mid80s and then with High Pressure with us tomorrow, well warm it up a little bit for the first day of fall. That will stay the pace on tuesday. More clouds on wednesday. Here comes our rain. Yay. Wednesday and thursday. With cooler temperatures and then we bounce back up again next saturday.
