Computer chips are getting smaller and faster, but not without some Serious Scientific Research happening high on a hill in berkeley. Heres abc7 News Reporter jonathan bloom, who suited up and went into the clean room where discoveries are being made that will make our smartphones much smarter and a whole lot faster. Reporter the view from the Lawrence Berkeley national lab is second to none. But the scientists inside are more excited about the view from this electronic microscope. These tiny ridges make up the circuits within a computer chip. Within each one of these chips theres more complexity than the entire road system in the world. It was nearly 50 years ago that intel cofounder gordon moore predicted the number of transistors on a chip would double every two years, its meaning the ridges have to get smaller and smaller. Its known as moores law and its been true for decades. But at his retirement even moore himself expressed doubt it would hold up much longer. Materials are made of atoms, and we arent too far from the point that really starts to bite us. You cant go smaller than an atom. But you can get close. Is it a breakthrough . Yes. Absolutely. It has to do with this liquid. Its called photo resist. Chip makers bake it into a solid and xpattern it with ultraviolet light. The patterns matter a lot. If you were writing your name in the sand at the beach you would have to have very, very small sand to get highresolution. And wet sand sticks together better. In that case consider this the finest, wettest sand youve seen for building silicon sand castles a few nanometers wide. When you want smaller cell phones and more powerful cell phones, it all adds up to better devices. Making computer chips smaller makes just about everything more complicated. For one thing an ordinary clean room is no longer clean enough to reliably manufacture something that microscopic. Dust particles flying through the air. Those dust particles look like boulders on a chip. Even looking at the chips becomes tough. It requires a new microscope that feels the chips like reading braille. If you look at it with your eye, cant see a thing. These microscopes are based on a sharp needle we touch on the surface. Its complex science with a simple purpose. The smaller the chip, the faster it runs and the less power it needs. You want your cell phones and tablets to last longer on the same battery. And before you know it. The pc you have on your desk will now be in your watch. In berkeley, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. I think a lot of people went out of town for the Holiday Weekend but certainly a lot of people have plans in the bay area, as well. Yes. The last day of august.
