Good morning to you. We have a patch of clouds over the bay area but live doppler 7hd shows that the cloudiness is thin and it will begin to push on out for a mostly sunny afternoon. So partly cloudy with numbers in the 40s. 50s at the coast. By noontime we will be well into the 50s. This afternoon a couple low to mid60s. Still sunny and dry a cool evening on tap. High pressure continues to build. We will have some gusty offshore winds. You know what that means. Temperatures continue to climb into the work week ahead. Ill have the 7 day forecast coming up. Carolyn. Thank you, lisa. Two more suspicious fires have been put out in san jose this morning where a serial arsonist has set as many as a dozen fires since wednesday. The first fire this morning was small enough to be handled by neighborhood at south 24th and east santa clara streets. About four hours ago a trailer burned behind a church on south 26th street. Nobody was injured in either fire. This is a police step of the man police and arson investigators are looking for. He was spotted near a house fire yesterday, which nearly trapped an elderly couple. Abc7 News Reporter Lisa Amin Gulezian talks with worried neighbors who plan to distribute this sketch door to door the fire ravaged this victorian home before dawn. It belongs to an elderly couple who moved in 50 years ago. They barely got out alive. They opened the door and tell them get out. Get out. The house is on fire. Jose helped them escape. Hes learning more about what he can do as a Downtown Resident to protect himself from an arsonist. You dont know who did this . Don is part of the 13th street neighborhood advisory committee. Hes talking with his neighbors about the man investigators believe started at least eight fires. Hopefully this person realizes that folks are after them and stops doing this because its absolutely outrageous. This is video from a surveillance camera across the street. You see a man walking back and forth four times before the fire. Police want to talk to him. These fires have targeted san jose residents in the darkest hours of the night when they are most vulnerable. Residents will go door to door passing out the sketch and. Smoke detectors. He is leading the effort. One fire is one fire too many. Its clear this is a guy who intends to do harm and weve got to do everything we can to protect each other. The Firefighters Union is offering a 10,000 reward. In san jose, Lisa Amin Gulezian, abc7 news. Developing news, a minor Traffic Accident on interstate 280 has led to a shooting in the bay view involving an offduty San Francisco police officer. The fenderbender occurred on the freeway, but the shooting happened when the officer and the other driver pulled into a gas station just after the midnight collision. Police say the two got into a physical altercation at the chevron stationary jerrold avenue and bay shore boulevard. During the scuffle the unidentified female officer fired her gun, striking the other person in the lower body. Police say the injury is not serious. The victim has refused medical treatment. This morning investigators plan to enter a palo alto house where two bodies were found friday following a fire. Flames broke out about 7 15 friday night in a home on the 900 block of embarcadero road. The structure is still not stable. Crews have not been able to go inside yet. They plan to do that today. A next door neighbor said a man and his caretaker lived in the home. Their names have not been released. This morning a man who was shot in San Franciscos Mission District is recovering from surgery. It was just after 5 30 last night when Police Received a report of a gunshot victim. He was found on shotwell street between 23rd and 24th and rushed to the hospital. Bad weather is preventing a Recovery Team from reaching the site where a plane crash killed a bay area tech executive. And also members of his family. Dale smith, his son and daughterinlaw, along with his daughter and her fiancee, all died after the plane crashed back in early december. The wreckage was found friday, nearly a month and a half after the plane disappeared from radar in a remote part of idaho. Smiths wife spoke with abc7 news. We have waited a long time to have some kind of closer and we kind of knew their chances were not good. This has allowed us to just identify exactly what happened and to move on and not be in that waiting place. Dale smiths brother found the wreckage. He spoke with abc7 news by phone yesterday. You are just so happy that you found the plane, you know, and then after a couple of seconds that kind of disappears and the grief hits you because you found the plane. Crews will meet tomorrow to consider options for reaching the remote crash site and recovering those bodies. The effort to create a park in memory of slain 13yearold andy lopez will cost Sonoma County somewhere between 2 million and 3 million. Andy lopez was shot to death october 22nd by a Sonoma County sheriffs deputy while carrying a bb gun designed to look like an ak47 assault rifle. A memorial is being built in the vacant lot where he died, but Community Members angered by the shooting want a park to be built there and named for him. A report by county officials on the cost of the park will be presented to the board of supervisors on tuesday. The nationwide flu outbreak continues to grow. Officials have confirmed eleven bay area deaths due to the flu. Two others in the county have been attributed to the virus but Health Officials are still waiting for test results to come back. This year the flu is not just affecting the very young and very old. More than 60 of patients are between 18 and 64. Thats twice as many as last year. According to the cdc, 37 states highlighted here in red, including california, are reporting widespread flu activity. In san rafael, Medical Center of marin sponsored a free flu clinic yesterday. The goal was to vaccinate as many people as possible in the community to help stop the virus from spreading. I try to encourage everyone to get a flu shot because the flu shot will help protect you against several various other flus, including the h1n1 virus which is the most virulent of the group and causing the most of the illness and deaths. According to the state health department, getting the flu shot can reduce your chances of getting the virus by 50 to 70 . Take a look at this submerged s. U. V. In florida on what was once a road beside the canal. In new york residents of 20 homes evacuate bid bulldozer after the Buffalo Creek flooded the roadway. In nearby west seneca, upstate boats were sent to rescue people from waterfilled streets. Two people were rescued from a car stranded in floodwaters. The pair rescued to safety. The warming temperatures causing flooding in lowlying areas. In atlanta, georgia a 14yearold girl trapped after strong winds sent a tree crashing through the roof of this mobile home. A delicate situation where we had to keep the tree stable at all times so it didnt continue to fall on this young lady. She is in the hospital in serious condition. In North Carolina up to 90 Miles Per Hour winds causing condos under construction to collapse. The roof of this gun shop outside of charlotte caved in by the torrential downpours. I said we better get out of here, it looks like the walls are coming in. Major ice jams along waterways pushing rivers over their banks and into streets and communities. Weve been watching the northwest swell with buoys reporting 18 feet at 14 seconds so from the Sonoma County coast all the way down through santa cruz, very dangerous conditions out there. But the surf there subside tonight and better conditions tomorrow. High pressure is building in once again and its going to build in strong. As it does, we will have an offshore flow to contend with, and thats going to bring the fire danger up. Already we are so bone dry and we are going to get some gusty winds. Its also going to boost the numbers to record warmth. Not only tuesday and wednesday, through the end of the work week, as well. Add in thursday. Today normal high should be 56 and San Francisco should see 59. And look at all the low to mid60s with the sunshine we will see 64 oakland, 62 in napa with mid60s out toward livermore. The south Bayside Authority said they collected nearly 200 dead birds in one week. The Freshwater Pond is located on radio road in redwood shores. He jumped a fence and vanished in subzero weather while his owners were visiting family in maine over christmas. On new years day they had no choice but to go back to maryland without him. Nine days later they got a call. A neighbor back in maine found him. He was hyperthermic, had a broken leg, but he was alive. The family made the 14 hour drive to get him and they will all go back home to maryland later today. Neiman marcus has confirmed they were hit by cyber thieves last month and customers credit card information was stolen. Neiman marcus is not saying how many customers were affected but they said they are working with the secret service on the breach. We often here praise for firefighters for their courage and bravery saving lives. This is a story about a firefighter with those same traits, but the most amazing thing about him is how he has persevered to make a comeback after two brushes with death. Abc7 News Reporter david loui has the story from menlo park. Reporter his face is familiar because you have seen harold on the news. He was among the First Responders to new york on 9 11 leading a National Mobile rescue unit. For more than 30 years hes been a firefighter and now a chief at menlo park Fire Protection district. His life changed dramatically on may 11th last year when he fell off a ladder while pruning bushes in the backyard of his san jose home. One of the goals that set for myself was coming back to do this job. Fortunately with the boards approval and a lot of people of that helped me along the way, you know, im here. That accident left him unable to walk and with limited use of his left hand. But hes back on the job after months of physical therapy. The toughest time was spending 66 days in the hospital. I had to relearn how to brush my teeth in the hospital, you know. Who would ever thought you would have to do that. How to move around, how to feed myself. You know, so and then overcome, you know, the hardest part of this injury is overcoming both the physical and months of physical therapy. The toughest time was spending 66 days in the hospital. Thats just his natural personality. Retirement is not for him, he says, and he will soon be getting a special van with hand controls to allow him to drive. He will be easing back to work, working only parttime for the next few weeks and hopefully will be able to work full time. Hes taking it one day at a time in menlo park, david loui, abc7 news. As you probably know, tourism is the number one industry for San Francisco. It can also be a big headache for those who live around major Tourist Destinations. People who live around the crooked block of lombard street are now asking the city for help. They come from all over the world. Venezuela. Im from china. Everyone wants to see lombard. Known as the crookedest street in the world. Its very historic and a landmark. This is a slow period during the offseason. Residents say multiply this by hundreds to see what they experience every day during the spring and summer. Taxis and buses and this is the first attraction that people come to San Francisco, they come here. Residents say in the last few years there has been an explosion of tourists. Its overwhelming. We are not equipped to be a tourist attraction like the Golden Gate Bridge or union square. We have no facilities for the people, we have no security. San franciscans who live near the painted lady were able to ban tourists from their neighborhood. They are already offlimits on lombard and the streets that cross it, and further restrictions concern the president of extranomical tours. As the city becomes less tourist friendly, there will be less people that will want to come to San Francisco. Supervisor mark feral is hoping to strike a balance. Hes asking the City Attorney to explore options like banning cars from lombard, limiting hours and even blocking off the street. We want to do the least restrictive thing that we can, the least restrictive regulations to make sure it doesnt change its current use or in any way detract from it as a Tourist Destination and also balance that with the neighborhood. They hope to have a compromise in place before the tourist season hits its stride later this year. I think john muir would be appalled at is happening at muir woods today. One reason why this resident, paul, spoke to the marin county board of supervisors as they drafted a letter to the National Park service about plans to manage the sometimes teeming masses. A large parking area is off the table. Theres now a reservation plan in the works. Would you have come if you would have needed to make a reservation. Probably not. Now the county will ask for a scientific study. The study would look scientifically at the study how many people are too many people . When does the benefit of sharing this environment become harmful to it . One thing that has to be taken into consideration is what is happening to those trees that the park service is charged with protecting. Locals would like to cap park visits at 750,000 people a year. But this is a moneymaking venture for the National Park service. The price of that . Cars and buses that cause Collateral Damage by clogging local roads. Did you count rings in the tree . Thomas works as a volunteer in the park. He says, yes, it does get busy on weekends, but its never crowded. I think that anything that we take away from the public doesnt help them. Thats going to stay with us today. The coolest day will be today as the high sits offshore. But it builds in, gets stronger and we are looking at near record warmth for about three days for the upcoming work week. Thats with temperatures into the 70s. Weve had waves offshore up to 20 feet. So very dangerous conditions from bodega bay and down through santa cruz. Strong rip currents. By tonight things will be subsiding. Heres a look at our water vapor imagery. We are looking at the stronger offshore flow tuesday, wednesday, thursday. 15 to maybe 20 degrees above average. And we will look for a little bit of cooling still. No rain even into next week.
